Who Keeps Sending Me Those Damned Postcards!?

2023.03.29 07:54 RehnWriter Who Keeps Sending Me Those Damned Postcards!?

Who’d ever be afraid of postcards?
After all, it’s nothing but paper, right?
That’s how I’d have reacted if you’d asked me that question about a month or two ago.
It all started back in April. I’d just returned from the grocery store and checked my mail. I do it less than frequently. The only thing that ever finds its way there are fliers, random advertisement or the occasional bill.
That day though, as I stood in front of the big outdoor mailboxes of my apartment building, there was something else. Amongst a handful of fliers that had accumulated over the past week and a half, I also found a postcard.
After I’d crumbled up the annoying advertisements, I checked the postcard. Its front showed a pair of cute kittens and a ball of yarn.
When I turned it around, wondering who it was from, I found a postal stamp, my address written in fine letters, but no message. At least I thought so until I saw a single smiley face drawn where one would usually find a message.
I stared at the card for a bit, more amused than confused, wondering who’d sent it.
Without thinking much, I pocketed it and went inside. After I’d put away my groceries, I added it to a small bulletin board in my hallway where I’d put up all the postcards I’d received from friends and family over the years.
I’d forgotten it soon enough, if not for another one that arrived a week later.
This time the motif was a sprawling forest with the sun rising in the distance. When I turned it around, it was the same thing. A stamp, my name and address, and another silly little smiley face.
“What the hell?” I brought out before I shrugged. Back inside, I pinned it to the bulletin board and went on with my day.
A few days later, another two postcards arrived. One showed a couple of balloons flying through the air, the other what I assumed to be an important historical building. Once again, neither of them contained a message. Instead, both of them showed the same lonely smiley face.
By now, I couldn’t help but frown. This was getting creepy.
This time I didn’t bother to put the cards up on the board. In the trash they went, without a moment’s hesitation.
And yet, I couldn’t help but wonder what was up with this. Why’d anyone sent me those cards? Why not add a message instead of that stupid smiley face? Was this supposed to be a joke?
I didn’t find any answers to my questions, but the next time I checked my mailbox, I found another batch of postcards inside.
They depicted random motifs, were all addressed to me, and each one sprouted another smiley face.
This time, I wasn’t confused or puzzled. This time I was getting angry. Who the hell was sending them? In my anger, I tore them to pieces right then and there and grumbled up the remains.
Then I stopped and looked around to see if the perpetrator was nearby. Maybe this was all someone’s elaborate joke to see how a random person would react to something like this?
Then I shook my head. It wouldn’t do me any good to grow paranoid about a couple of silly postcards. And they all had a postal stamp, so they’d arrived via mail, anyway.
And yet, the next day, I found myself in front of the mailboxes again, checking it even though I told myself to not let it go to my head. But wouldn’t you know it, I found another one. The same was true for the next day and the day after. Each day, a new, cute little postcard arrived, address to me and sprouting another random smiley face.
Who the hell was doing this? Those cards, the shipping, it all cost money, didn’t it?
That’s when I wondered who it could be. I didn’t exactly have friends and what few old ones I had I hadn’t talked to in years. The next thing that came to mind were past relationships, but I hadn’t dated anyone in years. The only nasty break-up I could think of was with Lin, and that had been almost a decade ago. No, as much as I racked my brain, no one came to mind.
I went online, asked about it on Reddit and other similar sites, but most of the answers I got were silly jokes. What few serious replies I got suggested it might be some sort of marketing campaign, a social experiment or someone tricking random people to see how they’d react.
Great, that didn’t help me one bit. So much for the information age.
Each day, I thought about the damned cards more and more and each day new cards arrived.
Eventually, on my way to the grocery store, I ran into the mailman who’d just started on his delivery on our block.
“Hello, excuse me, do you mind if I ask you a question?”
The man turned to me and gave me a puzzled look before he nodded.
“Sure, what’s up?”
“Well, for the past weeks, I’ve been getting those weird postcards in the mail. Do you by any chance know something about it? Maybe other people receive them too and I was wondering if there’s some sort of, you know, promotion or something.”
For a moment, he stared at me again.
“Haven’t heard of anything like it.”
“Yeah, but those damned cards keep arriving. By now it’s two or three a day and I was wondering,” my voice trailed off.
“They are like, landscapes, animals, greeting cards, anything basically.”
“All right,” he brought out in a strangely suspicious voice. “Do you live here?”
“Ah, down the road, in number sixty-eight.”
“Tell you what, buddy, I’ve no clue if I delivered any postcards, there’s a ton of mail and even more mailboxes. I’ll keep my eyes open though.”
“Thanks.”
From the way he held my gaze, I knew he wasn’t doing anything like keeping his eyes open. No, I could tell he was uncomfortable about the entire thing and just wanted to get over with. I sighed, nodded, and went on my way.
The next morning, while I put on some coffee, the same curiosity overcame me again. I put on my shoes and made my way outside. Wouldn’t you know it, another pair of postcards had found its way into my mailbox.
In an onset of fury, I tore them apart, cursing to myself, and threw their remains down in front of the mailboxes.
Once done, I found one of my neighbors, an old woman walking her dog, staring at me, a worried expression on her face.
“Ah, sorry,” I mumbled, more to myself than to her, before I hurried back inside.
Great, fucking great. If this continued, I’d be known as the local crazy guy in no time. But really, what the hell was up with those cards?
I had talked to the mailman, of course, but by that point he hadn’t been at my building yet. And he probably didn’t give a shit about a random guy pestering him about postcards. No, if anything, I had to talk to him right here, while he was delivering the damned things.
Yesterday I’d met him at about one in the afternoon. So he’d probably be back shortly after noon.
I tried my best to distract myself with my work, but I soon couldn’t concentrate on it anymore. Instead, I found myself sitting at the kitchen window, watching the street and mailboxes outside, waiting for his arrival.
I sat there for more than an hour, busying myself on my phone, when I noticed the bright-yellow delivery car. In an instant, I jumped up, put on my shoes, and dashed outside.
When I’d made it, he was rummaging through the back of his car, sorting through letters and parcels. Then he made his way to my building with a stack of them in his hands. The moment he noticed standing by the mailboxes, he gave me an awkward smile.
Shit, I told myself, now I’m the guy who’s stalking the mailman.
He gave me a friendly nod, trying his best to ignore me, but every so often his eyes wandered back to me. The way I watched him clearly unsettled him. Shit, I had to do something about this situation.
“Sorry about that,” I brought out, stepping up to him.
He gave me a half-questioning, half-scared look.
“You probably think I’m a nutcase but,” I broke up and couldn’t help but laugh. “All right, shit, now you definitely think I’m a nutcase.”
He joined my laughter, but his had an awkward, hollow sound to it.
“So about the postcards,” I started, but he raised his hand to cut me off.
He went through the stack of letters right in front of me, showing me one after another and then the three parcels.
“Nope, no postcards, same as yesterday,” he eventually said.
“Yesterday?”
“Yeah, when you asked me.”
“Motherfucker,” I brought out.
He gave me another curious glance as he pushed letter after letter into their corresponding mailboxes.
“Sorry, not you. It’s just, I found another batch this morning, so I thought maybe today there were more of them.”
“Well, as you can see,” he said, shrugging.
“Yeah, all good. I’m just trying to figure out who’s sending the damned things,” I said, giving him a little smile.
He gave me another curt nod before he hurried back to his car.
All right, if those things weren’t delivered by the postal service...
And so the biggest question on my mind changed from why to who and especially when.
For a moment, the strangest feeling came over me as I watched the mailman at his car and opened my mailbox again. Maybe he was fucking with me and hadn’t shown them. But when I stared into my mailbox, it was empty.
Back inside, I hatched a plan. They were there every morning, and the mailman didn’t deliver them, so someone else had to be behind it. I mean, they couldn’t just appear there out of thin air. So if I just waited by the kitchen window and watched the damned mailboxes, I should catch the perpetrator.
I found myself an interesting podcast, sat down by the window, and began my watch.
I sat there all afternoon, but all I saw were neighbors checking their mail. None of them touched my mailbox at all. When the sun set, I prepared myself a can of coffee.
When night fell, I was about to turn on the light, but then remembered what I was doing. Whoever was behind this would see me in the window and would just sit tonight out. Hell, maybe they’d already seen me and decided to leave things alone for today.
Shit.
Still, I had told myself I’d catch the one responsible for this and that I’d watch the damned mailboxes.
And yet, slowly, ever so slowly, hour after hour passed. Soon enough it was midnight, then one in the morning. At two, I grew tired and downed yet another cup of coffee. At half-past three, I almost nodded off.
I slapped myself across the face, downed another cup of strong coffee, and turned the podcast a few notches louder until it sounded like someone was screaming into my ear.
Eventually, morning came, and the sun dawned. I sat there, tired, exhausted, but most of all, discouraged. No one had shown up, no one at all.
For a moment, I couldn’t help but laugh. What the hell was I doing? Why was I sitting here all night just because of a bunch of stupid postcards?
And yet, I kept sitting there, watching the mailboxes for another hour and then another. Somehow, I couldn’t stop. It felt like the moment I’d step away from the window, someone would rush to the mailbox, put the cards in and dash away.
Then I started to think. What if they were waiting for exactly that? What if someone had seen me by the window and was waiting for me to give up, to falter?
My apartment was on the ground floor. I’d be out at the mailboxes within moments. If I was fast enough, maybe I could catch them red-handed.
For a moment I scanned the area nearby, the street and the sidewalk, the bushes and trees, but I saw no one.
Still, just to be sure, just so I wouldn’t miss a thing, I put my phone up near the window where it couldn’t easily be seen. Then I made sure it was pointed at the mailboxes and started a recording.
Once I was sure everything worked, I stepped away from the window. I put on my shoes, grabbed my keys and hurried outside to the mailbox.
I was all alone. My eyes darted around for movement, trying to see if anyone was nearby or hurrying away. All was as quiet as it could be. No one was nearby.
Then I walked up to my mailbox.
My fingers were sweaty as I put in the key and my hand was shaking slightly as I turned it.
It had to be empty, I told myself, it had to be.
But the moment the small mailbox opened up, I could already see them, three postcards. Cute kittens and puppies stared at me from each one. When I turned them around, I saw the postal stamp, saw my address and name and of course the damned smiley faces.
As they stared at me, I felt almost as if they were laughing at me, mocking me. Had someone actually made it to the mailbox in the few moments it took me to get here?
In an instant, another surge of rage came over me and I shredded the damned things. Then I made my way back inside and hurried to the kitchen.
The phone was still pointing at the mailboxes, still recording.
I was filled with the strangest sense of glee, of curiosity as I replayed the recording.
I brought the phone as close to my face as I could, gazing at it. The recording began, showing me the lonely mailboxes.
“Now, where are you, asshole?” I wondered as I continued watching.
Second after second passed with no one showing up, with nothing moving.
Then I saw something and at first I thought I’d caught the damned asshole playing tricks on me before I realized it was me walking up to my mailbox. I watched as I looked around, as I took out the key and opened it and eventually tore up the postcards.
In frustration, I dropped my phone onto the kitchen table and laughed.
How the hell had someone put those damned cards inside? I had seen no one!
Then I wondered if someone had dropped them in before I’d started watching the window. There had been a few minutes after my talk with the mailman. Hell, what if I had actually nodded off and hadn’t noticed it?
What if the damned mailman was behind it? Maybe that asshole pretended not to know anything and the moment I’d left him, he ran back to my mailbox and put the damned cards in? What if...
All right, stop. This is getting ridiculous. You’re sounding like a crazy person. Hell, you’ve acted like a crazy person. This entire ‘let’s watch the mailboxes all night long’ thing was crazy enough.
I rubbed my temples and shook my head. Shit, I was exhausted and all that for nothing.
The moment I fell into my bed I was deep asleep.
After that day, I made it a conscious effort to ignore whatever was going on here. Who knows, maybe that person did it all to get a reaction out of me. Maybe they were watching me, and maybe they’d seen me tearing up postcards and talking to the mailman. Maybe if I stopped caring they’d tire of their antics?
Either way, I told myself I’d better things to do than to worry about freaking postcards.
Still, whenever I was in the kitchen, I found myself at the window, staring down at the mailbox for a little while before I moved on.
I checked my mail occasionally. When I went to the grocery store or when I returned from an evening walk. Every single time, I found postcards inside and every single time there were more of them. They had to arrive in droves by now. At one point, I pulled out over three dozen of them.
It was the strangest thing, dumbfounding even, but I forced myself not to show a reaction. I wouldn’t give whoever was doing this any sort of satisfaction. No, I took out the postcards, closed my mailbox and went inside where I discarded them.
It was about a week later that my doorbell rang in the late afternoon. When I answered it, one of my neighbors was outside.
“I guess those are for you, aren’t they?” he brought out in a slightly annoyed tone when I opened the door.
I stared at him and then at the stack of postcards in his hand. My eyes grew wide, and I almost cringed back.
“Wait, what? No, those aren’t mine, they are,” I broke up, shaking my head.
“Look, no, those aren’t mine, they are-“
“But that’s your name on them, isn’t it? Right here, on every single one of them,” the man cut me off, his voice now more annoyed.
“Yes, I know, but-“
“Then how about you take them off me?”
“I... fuck, all right!”
With that, I ripped the stack of postcards from his hands.
“You know, it wouldn’t hurt to be a bit friendlier,” he brought out, staring at me.
At first I was about to retort something. To tell him to go fuck himself. But then I told myself to calm down. The guy probably brought them here because he thought the mailman had messed up. He was just trying to be a good neighbor in his own way.
“All right, I’m sorry,” I brought out. “Look, there’s something odd about those postcards.”
The guy’s face didn’t change. Instead, he kept staring at me.
“Someone’s been dumping them into my mailbox for weeks. Hell, probably for a month by now. Every day I find those stupid cards inside. Look, there’s not even a message on them! It’s all just those stupid smiley faces. I don’t know why they put them in your mailbox, but maybe they want to fuck with other people as well.”
“Who are... they?” the man asked me in a half-concerned, half-confused voice once my rant was over.
“Shit, I don’t know! The ones who are doing this, who are fucking with me, fucking with you!”
By now the man had grown apprehensive and taken a few steps away from me.
“Look, I’m not looking for any trouble,” he said, raising his hands in a defensive posture.
At that moment, I got an idea.
“Hold on, let’s go back to the mailboxes.”
“Why’d I-?” the guy started, but after a few moments of standing there confused and lost, he followed me.
After a few moments we were back outside, me standing in front of the mailboxes and him keeping a safe distance from who he thought to be a madman. After a quick turn of the key, I opened my mailbox. A flood of postcards descended upon me. The entire mailbox had been filled to the brim. The last ones had been stuffed inside with such force they’d crumbled.
“What the hell?” the man behind me brought out.
“That’s what I thought,” I reasoned. “They probably dumped the rest into another mailbox, into yours.”
“Look, if this is your idea of a joke, then-“
“What the hell kind of joke would that be? Look, there’s got to be dozens in here, maybe hundreds. Why’d I buy all those postcards just to play a joke on you?”
“Why’d anyone?”
This time, I couldn’t answer.
For a few more moments he stood there before he shook his head and left me alone with all my postcards. As I stared at the filled up mailbox, at the postcards who’d rained down on my feet, I couldn’t help but laugh.
This was insane, this was just utterly insane.
Over the course of the next days, things didn’t get better. More and more neighbors showed up at my door. The nice old lady from floor number three, a student from floor number six, and a young mother from down the hallway. Every single one of them would ring my doorbell to hand me a stack of postcards addressed to me that had accidentally been delivered to them.
As quietly and as normal as I could, I explained to them that someone was playing a trick on me. I told them to just ignore any cards addressed to me or throw them away.
They all nodded, but I could see the puzzlement on their faces, the confusion and the apprehension.
I could tell they were all wondering if this was my doing, and I was sure they considered me the local crazy guy by now.
It wasn’t long before even the mailman rang my doorbell. He told me there was a problem, and he had to speak to me for a moment.
When he saw who I was, he frowned.
“You know this is a problem, don’t you?” he asked, pointing at the mailboxes.
“What do you-?” I started but broke up.
Half of the mailboxes were stuffed with postcards.
I couldn’t help but laugh nervously, which prompted an angry glance from the mailman.
“That’s got to be hundreds... thousands,” I eventually brought out.
“Yeah, and I can’t deliver the mail, thanks to them. What are you going to do about it?”
“What am I... what?”
“Well, they are all addressed to you. This is clearly related to you!”
“But, I don’t, ugh,” I broke up in frustration.
By now, another neighbor had arrived, staring at her mailbox.
“Not again,” she brought out as she opened her mailbox and tore dozens upon dozens of crumbled up postcards from it.
As I watched, as I stared at all those stuffed mailboxes, I knew this wasn’t a prank anymore. No, something strange was going on here, something extremely strange.
I pulled out my phone and called the police. I made my report as vague as possible, telling them someone was stalking me and damaging the mailboxes at my apartment building.
When they arrived, I told them about the full situation. They listened intently, but I could see the look on their faces.
The longer I went on talking, the more angry they seemed to get.
I was quick to lead them to the mailboxes and pointed at the general chaos. Their anger dissipated almost instantly and was replaced by confusion.
“And, how long has this... whatever this is, been going on?” one of them asked while his colleague stepped up to the mailboxes.
“I guess, about a month and a half,” I started. “At first it was only a single postcard, but then more and more of them arrived, and now it’s come to this.”
The two police officers did the best to handle the entire situation professionally, but I could tell they were as perplexed as I was.
They asked me if I had any enemies, but I answered I couldn’t think of anyone. I told them I’d tried to figure out who was behind this for weeks, but I had no clue. I even told them of my nightly watch.
Eventually, one of them handed me his card with a phone number on it. They told me they’d take some postcards with them and look into it and they’d have someone to watch the nearby area.
With the police here and them taking action, I was sure this thing would finally end. Stuffing all those mailboxes had to take time, and I was sure they’d catch whoever was responsible.
The next morning, however, I found all the mailboxes in chaos again. Mine was so stuffed, I was surprised the door was still closed. Almost all other mailboxes were in a similar condition.
As I stood there, I took out my phone and called the number on the card the police officer had given me.
He answered, and I told him it had happened again. The man listened, but he couldn’t tell me much. They had someone watching the area, but so far, they hadn’t been able to see anyone suspicious.
The weird deliveries continued, and soon I wasn’t the only one in contact with the police. And yet, they never found out who was behind it, saw no one.
Even stranger, though, were the postcards themselves. None of them showed any label or a hint of a manufacturer. The same was true for the stamps.
And yet, nothing could be done and postcards kept arriving.
Before long people began pressuring the renting company. Something had to be done about this absurd situation. I knew some of them wanted me gone from the building while others wanted them to hire a mailbox security who’d watch it at all hours of the day.
The renting company, however, had a different plan. One day, they sent a maintenance team that took down the entirety of the mailboxes and simply moved them inside into the entry hallway of the building.
When I woke up the next morning, the first thing I did was to check on the mailboxes. Other people did the same thing.
I think we were all expecting them to be filled to the brim once more. Instead, everything was normal. There were no postcards with my name and silly smile faces on them anywhere.
I could see the relaxed faces of people around me, could hear them sigh in relief and talk about how it was finally over. And I couldn’t help but join in. They were still wary of me, still wondering how I’d spawned that madness, but I didn’t care.
Instead, still smiling, I went back to my apartment. I hadn’t even had coffee yet, I thought to myself.
With quick steps, I made my way towards my kitchen.
For the first time in weeks, hell, in more than a month, the world felt normal again. All I wanted right now was a nice, hot cup of coffee.
All those feelings vanished and changed the pure terror when I opened the kitchen door.
Right there, on my kitchen table and on the floor all around it, I found an uncountable number of postcards.
With a shaking hand, I picked up one of them. On it I found a postal stamp, my name and address and a stupid little smiley face.
And as I stared at it, as I stared at that silly, stupid little face, I couldn’t help but smile myself, smile and laugh about the absurdity of this entire mad situation.

Care plan vs insurance
I have been married for 17 years but never had a proper wedding ring set. Recently bought a set for our anniversary from rare carat and now I am trying to decide between a care plan or an insurance plan. I was looking into Jeweller's mutual but rare carat informed me today that they are offering a care plan through jewellers mutual which is "separate than the insurance" and they suggest I should still get insurance. The lifetime care plan is estimated to be $229 for the engagement ring and $169 for the wedding ring. And the jewellers mutual quote I am getting is $40 a year. Is there a need to get these both or is it redundant? Thank you!

In the end, it didn't even matter. - Chronicle of the Last Days of the VrekNok.Tok Empire
Vuxten wasn't sure what he expected as Casey stood up. No flexing, he just shook out his arms, tilted his head to the right and left, then just stood there.
The crowd started clapping and stomping.
STOMP STOMP CLAP
STOMP STOMP CLAP
All twenty-five robots went into combat stances, their eyes brightening.
The roar of the crowd was a physical thing, mixed with the STOMP STOMP CLAP of the watching troops.
"LETS GET REEEEADY TO RUUUUUUUUMBLE!" the Rigellian female yelled out. "JAWNCONNOR TIME! OOOOOH YEAAAAAAAH!"
The volume of the crowd somehow rose even louder as the Rigellian female ran off the field.
There was a beep and the lights went red. Another beep, they went yellow. A loud buzzer and the lights flashed red before going back to the actinic white of the sodium lights mounted on the portable light set trailers.
Vuxten expected Casey to break into a run, to charge the robots.
Instead he just walked forward, still swinging his arms wide. His sole eye burned bright amber and Vuxten could see hair thin tendrils of purple electricity around his feet when his foot hit the ground.
The robots took five paces, then all broke into a run, spreading out in a curved line with three double ranks in the middle.
One robot reached forward, the robot in front grabbed the rear robots forearms and threw it forward. It sped toward the lone human, reaching out for him.
Casey turned slightly, reached out, grabbed the head as the arms went to either side of him. Before the arms could crush him he knelt down and drove the robot's head into the ground hard enough to shatter it.
The second robot was already flying toward him, in a tight ball. The others were still running forward as the flying robot suddenly unwrapped itself, arms wide, obviously intending on slamming into Casey and wrapping its arms around the human.
Instead Casey took a two quick steps while the robot was still slightly turning, swinging one arm out.
The robot's battlesteel armor shattered like cheap plas as the robot broke in half.
The last flying robot reached Casey, who spun in place, the bare foot shattering the robot into pieces, battlesteel flying out to strike the battlescreens and make them crackled and pop.
The roar of the crowd battered at Vuxten.
The robots converged on Casey and Vuxten gritted his teeth.
He'd seen Casey at work in Heaven.
An open hand slap knocked a robotic head free. A sweeping arm motion broke robotic limbs reaching for him. A kick shattered a robotic thigh. A knee into the robot's midsection caused the armor to shatter and the robot break into multiple pieces.
Vuxten could see the robots landing blows, their kicks blocked by Casey's shin, their punches blocked by forearms or swept aside. Spiked battlesteel fists piston driven as they hammered into the scarred flesh, each impact bringing a flash of purple, but Vuxten couldn't see any damage to the big Terran.
The crowd was roaring. "JAWNCONNOR JAWNCONNOR JAWNCONNOR!"
Usually they survived long enough to swing a single punch before the counter-attack shattered the robot's armor like the battlesteel laminate was cheap macroplas. Casey would reach out and rip chest plate armor away, rip free and arm and beat another robot with the severed arm, smack heads off with a backhand, break a robot's spine with an elbow, or cave in the whole front of the robot with a forearm.
Every move flowed into the next one. Every action was calculated to force a movement that led to the robot being shattered into junk. Vuxten couldn't see any wasted movement, anything that didn't bring around a better position, for the robots to move a certain way, damage or destroy a robot.
The last robot lunged forward, swinging wildly. Vuxten watched Casey slip around the punches, kneeing the robot so it spun. Casey's hand landed on top of the robot's head as his other hand grabbed its shoulder, fingers sinking into the battlesteel armor like it was putty.
Casey ripped the robot's head off and held it over his own head as the body collapsed.
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!" Casey roared out.
The crowd cheered back.
Casey heaved the robotic head, the head slamming into the battlescreen and exploding.
Vuxten found himself on his feet cheering as Casey walked back to where he had dropped the black robe and slowly pulled it on. Casey slowly turned, staring at the crowd with one burning amber eyes, then drew the hood up over his head.
The crowd roared their approval as he walked off the field.
"Told you I didn't want to spoil the main event for you, son," Colonel Brett said, exhaling smoke in a long plume.
"Saw him fight during the War on Heaven," Vuxten said, sitting down and accepting the nacrobrew. "What you saw, that was a warm up."
Colonel Brett nodded. "Last week he took on four men in power armor. They lasted just over ninety-seconds before he'd destroyed the power armor," the big Treana'ad laughed. "One of the pilots was knocked goofy, but other than that, he didn't injure them."
Vuxten looked around. "You're allowing this?"
The Treana'ad nodded. "All the way up to General Du.Seelie," the big bug grabbed another nacrobrew and knocked the cap off with his cybernetic bladearm before taking a long pull from it. He belched and looked at Vuxten. "Better to have the rowdies out here fighting and drinking then hitting the Conex brothel than off post, getting drunk, fighting, trying to find someone to fuck, and burning down the town."
Colonel Brett made a motion with his cyberbladearm to encompass the entire field and the crowd that was cheering on an autonomous battlebot competition between two greenie groups.
"These men have not only seen the elephant, they've ridden it, screwed it, and left it with child. Their adrenals and dopamine systems are, to use a Terran phase, blown the fuck out," he shook his head. "The same beings who are fighting out there or cheering on their best friend getting his face smashed in are the same ones watching the early morning episodes of The Kind One or The Happy Neighborhood in the Day Room."
Vuxten nodded.
"Give them outlets for their instincts, their energy, their aggression that doesn't have them knife-fighting outside the NCO Club or getting into shootouts with the civilian law enforcement," Colonel Brett said. The big insect shrugged. "It's the age-old problem. You select for high aggression, moderate impulse control, then train them to be lethal and hone their aggression, then expect them to all behave like good little civvies until the war is on."
The big insect shrugged again. "Some species have tried cryo-stasis. Other species, like mine and the Mantid, bred a warrior caste. Still others try various solutions, none of which are that good."
He pointed out at the field where two power armor troops were fighting hard light holograms.
"The Confederate Armed Services lets this happen. It lets the ones too clever for their own good get into 'trouble'," he made air quotes. "If something goes down, well, this was all off the books and vaguely illegal anyway. Command just turns the other way for anything that isn't too bad, the grunts stay aggressive, and everyone but the reclamation yard workers are happy."
Vuxten nodded slowly. Beside him, Tut'el listened silently, soaking up the older officer's words.
"You started on Telkan, correct?" Colonel Brett asked. "Under General Tik-Tak, right?"
Vuxten just nodded.
"Ol' Tik-Tak, he had his fingers in everything. He let a whole thing like this get run by a Lanaktallan gangster, saved him the trouble of having to 'arrange' it himself," Colonel Brett said. He gave a slight laugh. "Man could bury two expended pistol shells in the dirt and pull out a Madame-Three-Eighteen an hour later."
Vuxten just chuckled and nodded along.
Colonel Brett checked his implant and nodded, standing up and draining away the last of the bottle before dropping it in the trash can.
"Let's go check on your man, Colonel," Brett said.
Vuxten was aware of the two law enforcement officers behind him as he and Tut'el followed the big Treana'ad officer through the crowd, which was cheering on two dozen Grodds engaged in a battle royale, wearing only loincloths.
It was out back of the mek yard, between two partially destroyed Steiner Class scout meks, that they found Casey. He was sitting on an empty crate that had held low-explosive missile warheads, drinking a fizzypop and watching the action in the ring. Peel sat just to the side, leaned back on a cargo net, one mammary exposed and a tiny human holding onto it with closed eyes and a slightly grump expression visible on the side of its face.
His face brightened and he smiled as Vuxten walked up with the Colonel.
Casey stood up, shaking Brett's hand.
"Colonel," Casey said.
"Casey," Brett answered.
"Colonel," Casey said, shaking Vuxten's hand. "Congratulations on the promotion. Gone far since we were trying to figure out how to bust open the Great Gobbler's shell."
Vuxten smiled. "That we have."
"Lieutenant," Casey said, shaking the MP's hand.
"Casey," the LT said, not looking surprised that Casey knew his rank.
"Mister Mysterio," Casey said, shaking the CID officer's hand.
The CID officer laughed. "Cathal."
Casey waved at the boxes. "Cop a squat, gentlemen," he said. He pointed at Peel. "That's my wife, Peel, and our daughter, Hashna."
Colonel Brett moved up and gently reached down with his biological bladearm, caressing the baby's cheek gently. "Little one," he said softly. He looked up. "They're always so cute, human children."
"Thank you, sir," Casey said, sitting back down.
"You won the Regiment Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Fund quite a bit of doss, Casey," Colonel Brett said.
"Always happy to help," Casey smiled.
Vuxten sat with the others, chatting about mostly nothing, sometimes commenting on the matches going on. Peel finished feeding the infant, then burped it, then held it close while it slept, taking part in the conversation.
When the matches ended and everyone started to drift apart, Vuxten moved over to Casey.
"Come to my office during lunch on Monday," he said.
Casey looked up. "Should I bring my sidearm?" he asked, only half-joking.
"No. Just wanted to talk with you about something," Vuxten said.
Casey nodded.
They said goodnight to one another and Vuxten walked with the others back.

If it ain't raining, it ain't training - Confederate Military Wisdom
The day was miserable. Chilly wind that kept switching direction, rain that couldn't make up its mind if it was heavy or just misty, heavily overcast.
Vuxten sat, staring out the window, and watched as a platoon of dogbois ran by in PT gear.
The three spaced firm knocks at the door came exactly at 1135 hours.
"Enter," Vuxten called out, spinning his chair around and moving closer to the desk.
Casey came in, wearing his ACU's. He moved to the front of the desk, exactly a pace away, and saluted. Vuxten returned the salute and waved at the chairs.
"Grab a cup of caff or a fizzystim, then take a seat," Vuxten said.
"Thank you, sir," Casey said. He moved over and grabbed a self-chilling fizzystim, cracking it open and watching the condensation form. He sat down and took a drink, waiting.
Vuxten thought for second.
"I noticed that Confed hasn't figured out your orders yet," Vuxten said. "Neither has the Telkan Marine Corps, since you're assigned to us."
Casey shrugged. "I figured they'd get around to it."
"I want you to come to Telkan with me," Vuxten said.
Casey frowned. "All right," he said slowly.
"You and Peel both," Vuxten said. He reached out and tapped a pair of manila folders. "I've reviewed the unredacted sections of your records, I've seen you both in action. I want you to come back to Telkan with me."
"Why?" Casey asked.
Vuxten sighed. "They're making me the XO of the training cadre," he said. "We've also got the Primary Leadership Development Course - Telkan, on planet, as well as the Telkan Intelligence Service training center."
Casey just nodded.
"I'm not asking you take command or anything like that," Vuxten said. "I've watched you in action. I've seen you at work. You've got a thousand years of leadership under your belt and either you're a born leader or you've become an excellent one over the centuries."
"Thank you, sir," Casey said.
"Peel has been everything from SAR to Operations Analysis to Operational Emergency Guidance," Vuxten said. "Highly rated, excellent NCOERs, taught at the Confederate Military Intelligence Institute on Terra itself."
Casey just nodded.
"I want you and Peel both as instructors. Classroom and practical," Vuxten said. "With Terra gone, and the Terran Xenocide Event, my people have to defend themselves. We have to learn to not only defend ourselves, but others."
Casey just nodded again.
"I'm pretty sure you're cleared for garrison duty, and a tour in TRADOC is something that the Telkan people would appreciate," Vuxten said. He waited a moment. "I'm not going to force you."
Casey chuckled. "Not often an officer says 'please' to lower enlisted slime like me," he smiled.
"Well?" Vuxten asked.
Casey nodded. "I can't speak for Peel, but if she's in, so am I. If she says she's in if I am, then I'm in," Casey said. He shook his head, smiling. "A few years out of armor, training boots, might be just the thing I need."
"I thought you'd like to watch your baby get older just like I want to watch my podlings grow up," Vuxten said.
Casey smiled. "We're family men now," he said.
Vuxten nodded. "And too many years in service to go running off to the nearest fight with an erection, a gut full of Bingo Cola, and a gun in our hand."
Casey laughed. "All right. You talked me into it." He stood up. "I'll let Peel know, get her opinion, then you can talk to her. She'll let you know if we're in or out."
Vuxten nodded, standing up. He shook Casey's hand.
"Give 471 my regards," Casey said.
"Tickle the baby for me," Vuxten answered.
When the big Terran left Vuxten slowly turned his chair around and stared at the rain outside.
Is it weird that battle and war are easy, it's peace-time that's hard?

2023.03.29 03:33 HowdyYaw What is the criteria for a lemon car in Florida and does mine qualify as one?

I have bought and am financing a used vehicle (2019 Nissan Versa SV) from a Honda dealership, and have only had for roughly a year more or less (probably actually hasn't been a year just yet) and it has given me quite a few issues. I don't/haven't kept an accurate log of when every incident has happened, so everything is a rough estimate. But the first major thing that happened, I want to say was between 1-3 months after purchasing the vehicle...the vehicle just stopped at an intersection light. I had to call my insurance company to have it towed to the dealer ship. After they inspected they said something about it happening due to a faulty massive air blow sensor, so they replaced it and put it in a new one. Then some time later I start getting a light on the dashboard come on (can't remember which one it is) but if i remember correctly it is still correlated to the massive air blow sensor. They inspect and think that when the technician installed the new sensor, they tightened it too much to the "box" that the sensor attaches to, because there was a crack in the box and so air is still slightly leaking out and hence why the sensor is still sending a dashboard light. So they replace the box and just incase that there is something faulty with the new sensor itself, they order another one and replace both. I leave and within days the sensor comes back on. I take it back and this time, they get a "master technician" to delve deeper into the problem. He finds out that whoever had worked on the vehicle before with the previous owner did something in which the sensor was covered with some paint, and so the sensor was able to properly send out the signal, hence the dashboard light. So he cleaned it up well and that light finally stopped.
Some time passes maybe a month, I start getting the tire pressure dashboard light on (actually had come on before but hadn't mentioned it because it was the least of my worries at the time, first time around I simply filled up the tires with air at a gas station and it had stopped). This 2nd time around the lights came on though only maybe 2 months after i had filled up the tires at the gas station, assuming it is another similar issue with that specific sensor, but I still haven't brought it up because my current issue (which was actually brought up during the last service when they took off the paint on the sensor) is by far the the biggest issue and is what is making me really nervous and why I am even looking into whether I can get help with this potentially being a lemon car. During that service, they also made a notice of the fact that sometimes when they were drive testing it (and i had noticed it too), during acceleration sometimes the vehicle would make a "juddering" sound (that is the word they used in the service notation. On top of that, sometimes when I go to transition from "park" to "reverse" the lever gets stuck, and I have to release the break, press down on it again, and then usually it transitions. So the service advisor recommended taking it to Nissan because they would be more familiar with the CVT transmissions. I took it last week and paid for the diagnosis, and they told me that while they can also sense a "juddering" sound, they can't confirm whether the transmission is failing until they update the software on my car's computer programming so that it actually sends out a code saying that it is the transmission. Just to update the software it would cost me $500 something so I decided to put it off for now. I asked her opinion if she had seen this problem before and how likely it is for it to be an issue with the transmission, and she said she has and that there is pretty good chance I am going to have to fix it. I asked for a rough estimate, and she said it could be anywhere from $5-$7k, and I just don't that kind of cash lying around. I am sad, frustrated, and scared all at the same time, this is technically the first vehicle i have ever purchased, and I can't afford to go without a vehicle, I need it to get to work Mon-Friday, I won't (and don't want to) be able to keep asking friends and family to drive me should the transmission fail.
If my current situation does qualify as a lemon car based on the information I've provided, would I absolutely need to get an attorney, I'd really rather not have to go through all the work and hassle of going through one if I can somehow be assertive at the dealership and see if they can't at least cover some of the cost of the repair (service advisor suggested maybe calling corporate and seeing if they can give me a discount). But, while I'd rather not go through the work of getting an attorney, if I must, i definitely will because this is a lot of money we are talking about (for me at least). The other thing I am unsure of, when I go to discuss this issue with the dealership about potentially getting a discount for the vehicle, do I go to the dealership that I bought it from (Honda) or the dealership of the car Manufacturer (Nissan)? I am really looking forward to any help you all can offer, and really appreciate it.
Thank You

2023.03.29 03:26 j2sauzy Oil consumption issue

I just recently bought a 2014 subaru crosstrek from a only owner who had all paperwork going back to when the vehicle was first purchased. Regular maintenance all done at the dealership. I bought the car for 15k at 95k miles. Changed the oil last month and I've burned through about a quart of oil in that time. I'm concerned it may be my piston rings. The car hasn't been driven hard by me or the previous owner as he was a very old man. Dealerships have quoted me 6k to replace. Not diagnosed yet but I'm just thinking worse case scenario. Do i sell the car or fix it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

2023.03.29 02:04 alotfora Caught Up

I consider today’s so-called sports cars to be heavy, claustrophobic coupes, caught up in a horsepower race that makes them nearly undrivable on the street.
Case in point: At a performance-car get-together spot south of San Francisco I met up with a guy in a Lamboghini Huracan, a fabulous exotic, but huge, and with its interior as confining as a tomb. I felt sympathetic toward the driver. On that bright summer’s day, twisty and undulating Hwy 9 to Santa Cruz was the perfect fun drive for my ND2, while his Lambo would never have got out of second gear.
To me an MX-5 with manual transmission is a precision instrument that, for a driver with sufficient skill, makes possible an unparalleled driving experience on public roads.
First off, the car is as small as they can make it, too small for many Americans. But for those who fit, with the top down the car pretty much disappears, making the driver one with their environment.
Add to this Mazda’s obsession with lightness and perfect weight distribution, and the result is inertia-free turn-in, and once in a corner, all four wheels sharing the load.
The car’s all-alloy suspension is fully tunable, as befits the most-raced car in the world. Upon delivery, every MX-5 owner with sporting intentions should take their car to an alignment shop that specializes in race cars, and have them use Flyin’ Miata’s alignment settings. The factory’s settings are usually out of whack, and with the stock suspension and race alignment, the car is transformed.
Mazda delivers the car softly sprung, because half its owner base are not “serious” drivers, but instead want a cute car as a fashion accessory. This demographic keeps the MX-5 profitable. Honda’s more driver-focused S2000 was a superb sports car but Honda discontinued it because the motorhead community is just too small to make production affordable. So I never criticize the fashionista crowd — enjoy your MX-5 your way!
The stock suspension with race-spec alignment is just fine for 7/10ths driving on the street. At this reasonably safe level of engagement the car’s best features shine through. Driven harder, excessive body roll ensues.
The ND2’s high-revving, high-compression (13:1) engine provides a perfectly linear power band, paired with a TRUE six-speed that has NO overdive gears, resulting in always being at optimal revs however variable the corners on your favorite stretch of road.
A stock ND2 reaches 60 in under 6 seconds and tops 130 mph, and that is just-right performance for the street. I’ve been down the forced-induction road with earlier MX-5s and lived to regret it. The wheelbase is too short for big horsepower and combined with turbo lag resulted in some scary moments. (But never have I crashed an MX-5 or been in a collision.)
Unless you autocross, you don’t need the limited slip diff.
The traction control cuts in too early for spirited driving so is best turned off, provided the driver is aware the back end is going to want to come around a little earlier.
If you’re a sports car enthusiast, which trim level to get? The one all the racers buy, the base level Sport. You’ll save thousands over the Club, and the Club’s brand name add-ons are ALL replaced by the racing community because they add no performance benefit and do not stand up in the racing environment!
For example, the racers use 16” wheels, which the Sport is delivered with, shod with excellent summer-only performance tires. (On base models, most manufacturers provide cheap all-season tires, but Mazda has too much class to go that way.) The Club comes with heavier 17” wheels for cosmetic reasons.
If you want to go seriously fast, you’ll need to replace the brakes with race spec calipers and go with stainless steel lines. The Club Brembos will fade if raced.
And, to get rid of that body roll, and to enhance turn-in, you’re best off switching to a coil-over suspension with race-spec shocks from Koni or Ohlins.
If you go that route you’ll lose the standard MX-5’s suspension compliance, which keeps the car from getting upset in bumpy corners and delivers a smooth ride by sports car standards.
Those who pay to lower the car in order to impress strangers are part of the “cute car” demographic and so do not have to be concerned with handling.
The only cosmetic option I got with my MX-5 was the factory metal pedals at around $210. A car so perfect for heel-and-toe shifting deserves metal pedals.
I got my 2019 Sport in basic black, new from the dealer for $24,600. Three and a half years into ownership the car has never been commuted in and with 18k on the clock is coming into its own.
And not just for sport driving. Doing errands around town is nearly as much fun as back roads, because this car has to be DRIVEN every moment. Heel-and-toe braking and shifting is not just a performance technique, it is essential for going up and down through the gears around town for maximum smoothness.
Where the car has no equal, however, is at 7/10ths on a twisty, undulating secondary road. All the inputs are perfectly tuned to deliver a smooth and quick drive while multitasking the steering, throttle, brakes, and shifting, a lot of consecutive activities that when done right, add up to a matchless driving experience.
Having owned all kinds of cars, I’ve found my driving sweet spot and this is it. That Mazda can deliver a thoroughbred sports car that rivals a Lotus Elan, which I drove in England back when they were new, for under the price of an optioned Mazda3 exconobox is just spectacular. A couple of years ago Consumer Reports cited the MX-5 as having the lowest operating costs of any new car sold in the USA. A sports car! And the high-compression Skyactiv engine combines high revs and extraordinary fuel economy, in the 30s even when driven hard.
My generation, the okay boomer crowd, is on its way out, and so is our version of driving performance. Very few Millennials and Gen Zs care about manual shifting, and they are right. Today’s automatics shift way faster than any manual driver could, and shifting stick at least doubles the complexity of the driving process. But that is why we old school motorheads like shifting for ourselves — because it is hard! It is a skill that takes practice and money cannot buy.
Were it not for this car, we old timers would have nowhere to turn. People don’t understand why we are uninterested in a front-drive hot hatch like Honda’s Civic Type R. The particular form of driving magic we seek is not related to acceleration, but rather to harmony. There is a Zen-like state that can be achieved in this little car unlike with any other, and those who get it are now a vanishingly small minority. To us, this is our swan song, our farewell to a future of self-driving electric pods, a future foreign and unappealing. With the MX-5, we can go out in style.

The Best Three-Row Midsize SUVs of 2023

Three-row midsize SUVs may not be as popular as compact SUVs, but they remain strong sellers in Canada. With seating for seven or eight, these spacious vehicles comfortably accommodate large families on short and long trips. Which one is the best money can buy?

The Car Guide has gathered its team of experts to identify the top three-row midsize SUVs on the market in 2023. Check them out right here!

https://preview.redd.it/j683kqlv6gpa1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=1af24bd20e4f0e6eb33ce986dc8784cef0e2b698
The Korean duo has set the benchmark when it comes to three-row midsize SUVs. The Palisade and Telluride are tied for first place as they share the same platform and 3.8-litre V6 engine.

The Telluride is refreshed for 2023 and introduces X-Line and X-Pro models, the latter a more rugged offering with increased off-road capability. The Palisade received a mid-cycle update, as well, including cosmetic revisions, new materials and the addition of a more adventurous Urban model.

https://preview.redd.it/qmi8istz6gpa1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=0da83f7c569bc8dbb3d31a9176dbed537beea28d
Fit and finish, content, interior space, ride quality and strong V6 performance all elevate these two SUVs above the competition. At 11.3 L/100 km combined, fuel consumption could be better, however. There is no hybrid option.

  1. Toyota Highlander

https://preview.redd.it/yoyonqd17gpa1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=bef68bfb34bf06713cb78c3eaa528db342ec3477
The Highlander is one of the best-selling SUVs in the segment thanks to excellent reliability and tremendous residual value. For 2023, changes include a new multimedia system and digital instrument panel. More importantly, the V6 is replaced by a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine producing 265 hp and 310 lb-ft. of torque.

The Highlander further stands out with an available hybrid variant. While less powerful (243 hp), this model impresses with a remarkable 6.7 L/100 km in a mix of city and highway driving.

Complaints? The interior is not as roomy as some of the competitors, the brake pedal lacks bite, and dealers have few units on their lots.

  1. Nissan Pathfinder

https://preview.redd.it/0k4r27ne7gpa1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=8eea234b62d16f965316bb7626890ac49c70dc51
The Pathfinder was completely redesigned a year ago, boasting significant improvements in technology, styling, handling and interior space. The 2023 model marks the return of the Rock Creek Edition, which offers a bit more power (295 hp vs. 284 hp) and better off-road capability.

This three-row SUV rides on a smooth suspension making it well-suited for Canadian roads. The seats are another highlight, offering superb comfort and support. The V6 is a potent performer, but there’s no gas-electric alternative.

We have yet to test drive the next-generation 2023 Honda Pilot, so we didn’t include it here. You should still feel pretty confident buying one, though. And don’t miss the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 coming on sale in the spring of 2023.

If you are in the construction or mining industry, you might be familiar with the Epiroc Hydraulic Hammer. This powerful tool is used to break through tough materials such as rocks, concrete, and asphalt. To keep it functioning efficiently, it is essential to maintain its components regularly. One of these components is the Wear Bush 3363069183.
The Wear Bush 3363069183 is a vital part of the Epiroc Hydraulic Hammer. It is located in the front part of the hammer and acts as a buffer between the front head and the retaining pin. The Wear Bush 3363069183 is designed to protect the front head from wear and tear caused by constant impact while in operation.
The Wear Bush 3363069183 is made of high-quality materials, which makes it durable and long-lasting. It is designed to withstand extreme conditions such as high temperatures, pressure, and heavy loads. However, due to constant use, it is prone to wear and tear and may require replacement from time to time.
Regular inspection and replacement of the Wear Bush 3363069183 is crucial to maintain the efficiency and performance of the Epiroc Hydraulic Hammer. Failure to replace a worn or damaged Wear Bush 3363069183 may result in damage to the front head, which may cause the hammer to malfunction and potentially cause accidents.
In conclusion, the Wear Bush 3363069183 is a critical component of the Epiroc Hydraulic Hammer. It plays a significant role in protecting the front head and ensuring the hammer's efficiency and performance. Regular inspection and replacement of this part will help keep your hydraulic hammer operating at its best and avoid any costly downtime. Email: [email protected]

2023.03.28 22:47 Lard_Cow Buyers remorse after buying a car. Did I make the right call?

So I had been driving a 2010 Chevy Impala for the past 5 years, it was my first car, and it's always been great to drive. 100k miles when I got it, its now up to 145k. However, its had nonstop little issues, had to replace an oil sensor, had to replace a caliper twice, rusting, and most important for where i live, it can't pass emissions. Last time I took it to the shop to get me to pass, it ended up costing me $1400, before finally passing. The check engine light came on immediately after it passed again, so I just gave up and decided to get a new car before emissions were due again.
I dumped $10k on a 2010 Honda Civic the other day, which was a lot of money for me. I'm a college student who works and lives at home still, and that was about 90% of the money I had saved up over the last 2 years. The car only has 86k miles, and when looking for it I was excited. It seemed reliable and like it would last me a long time. However now that I've got it I feel like I made the wrong choice. I don't like how it drives compared to the Impala, and getting used to all the little things on the interior is just making me really hate the car.
I'm having major buyers remorse, feeling like I should've just fixed up the Impala instead of dumping 10k into a new car that I don't even like the feel of. I'm not sure if this is normal and I'll get used to the new car and grow to love it in the end or if I made the wrong call and wasted money. Any thoughts?

2023.03.28 22:27 Erectorz Darkest Dungeon Class Analysis(Antiquarian)

The last analysis went over pretty well in my opinion. I loved hearing how my takes differed from everyone else's and people were generally positive in the comments which is always nice.

Analysis
Just gonna preface this, I don't particularly like antiquarian, she has her uses outside of money making shenanigan's and she is a part of a few legitimately powerful strats but I don't place that much value in antiquarian outside of generating shekels.
Antiquarian has the worst stats in the game, while you might argue that she has powerful tools at her disposal, her base stats are not one of them. In fact the only categories where her base stats aren't the absolute lowest in the game are her above average dodge, average speed and second to lowest bleed and trap resistance. She has no stun, low damage, VERY low health and terrible resistances. Her "intended" role is as a money making machine since she has three passive abilities that the game never explains to you. She increases the stack amount of gold by 750 PER antiquarian up to a potential 4750 if you had a party of 4 antiquarians. If SPECIFICALLY antiquarian interacts with curios she can cause antiques to spawn, and she also causes enemies to drop them. Lastly(this one was news to me) she increases the comet shard earnings in the farmstead by 15%.
So from her passive abilities it seems like antiquarian was designed to be a money making pro but while I have been pretty down on her so far she has some good traits and a bucket load of utility.

Nervous stab and Festering vapours are her main damaging options. Both of which can be used in any position. Their damage isn't amazing and they have very low crit chances but they both have pretty good projection, stab hitting ranks 1-3 and vapour hitting 1-4. Vapour starts out awful only having a 1 damage blight but scales up to 3 damage per round. Vapours is also very accurate at 115 base acc.
Get down is a skill you can use. I don't think I have EVER pressed this button. It offers a lot of dodge and spd but she has better buttons. Theoretically this would help against shuffles but she can innately move back 2 already so giving up an entire skill for the rare situation where she gets shuffled isn't worth it in my opinion. Holy lance is worth it for position 1 crusader since it lets you do something productive with your turn, but a defensive self buff to get back into position is a lot harder to justify.
Flash powder is one of her best utility skills, offering A LOT of "dodge". To put this into perspective a cultist brawler has a 72.5% chance to hit while a Cultist champion has a 92.5% chance to hit. Flash powder lowers their chances to hit to 62.5%/77.5% respectively. Factoring antiquarian's innate dodge(level 1/5) plus light level their chance to hit goes to 50%/45%. It also has the ability to remove stealth an incredibly valuable trait to have.
Fortifying vapours is essentially a bad battlefield medicine. A small heal that helps against dots. Any heal is still a useful tool however so the value of such an ability should not be understated. She can only use her heal from position 3/4 though. It follows festering vapour starts out a 1 heal ends up at 3.
Her last two abilities are where her main combat niche derives from. Invigorating vapours and protect me.
Invigorating vapours is bolster that can be spammed. Dodge is a stat that becomes more valuable the more of it you have, and Invigorating vapours is arguably the best skill at applying dodge. 3 casts of this and your entire team is sitting at 30 dodge, factor in a MaA with bolster and innate dodge you are sitting at 65-70 dodge for the entire party. Monsters with very accurate attacks sit at around 110%, bosses can get to around 120% for their very accurate attacks. With dodge trinkets you can get to 25-30 additional dodge letting your dodge when fully stacked sit at 90-100 dodge. With MaA tactics you can net an additional 10 dodge to sit at 100-110. You can make this strategy even more powerful with another antiquarian .Being almost untouchable is cool the first time you do it but it get's boring very fast. To be fair this is a very legitimate and powerful strategy but it's just not for me. This is the same as running stall in pokemon single player, effective but very boring in practice. But just because I dislike the strategy doesn't make it any less valid for beating the game.
Protect me forces another unit to guard you and gives the guarding unit a mark and some defensive stats. So the common strategy is to use this in conjunction with HWM's riposte. In doing so you double the chance to get ripostes, increase the durability of your HWM and you keep the high utility of the antiquarian. This helps with antiquarian's low durability and nets more free actions from riposte.
Antiquarian is very awkward to me. Early on is when money is the most important so it'd seem like antiquarian would be best suited for apprentice level dungeons but her skills become significantly better as they are ranked up. The effectiveness of her three vapours triple and anti stealth starts to be a real boon at champion. The rest of the cast scale pretty linearly with level, their relative strength at level 1 to level 5 remains about the same. But a lot of antiquarians skills feel terrible to use at level 1. A heal for 1 is useful for staying off deaths door but is going to take years to top some one off. Whereas a heal for 3 would take a while but you would be making SOME progress toward it. Because her dot and heal triple in effectiveness as she levels but health pools at most double her skills seem weighted toward higher level dungeons. The HWM, antiquarian combination is good but honestly you could just run two HWM and have very similar results. You lose out on a small heal and the defensive buff but your damage would just double. There is definitely some merit to the combo but when I'm doing champion runs consistently I most likely have the bank already so money isn't that much of a concern.
Antiquarian has her uses I don't want anyone thinking she doesn't but she has some SERIOUS downsides. Every hero you use comes at the opportunity cost of not using another hero and this is the most evident with antiquarian. The main roles a class needs to fill in my eyes are, damage dealer, healer, stunner, stress healer and antiquarian doesn't really fit any of these rolls besides healer. But the largest factor against her in my eyes is her abysmal hp. Characters are gonna take hits, it just happens, and some times those hits are crits. The fact that antiquarian has 6 less hp than the next lowest means her margin for error is much lower. A typical high damage crit for most enemies is around 20 damage. Cutthroats, Choppers, Bone Arbalest, slashers all do around that much damage on a crit. At 35 hp(jester,OCC) you might be barely off deaths door after a crit and a high roll for some of those units(6-13 damage range). With Antiquarian you are at deaths door after crit and an average roll. 35 Hp is still very low mind you so even if you had some extra health from quirks or trinkets you wouldn't be out of the danger zone, just not as deep in it. Add to this the fact that she has abysmal resistances, dots will stick to her more easily and dots are typically how my units die.

Her camping skills are a bit meh overall. No anti night time ambush which is relevant here because if you were running her as a replacement for vestal or occultist, those two can prevent night time ambush, antiquarian cannot. Resupply is nice for when you have the odd point out, trinket scrounge is very fun for you gambling addicts here. Take 4 antiquarians into a long dungeon and roll those dice baby. Strange powders is a good defensive buff, fortifying garlic as a camping skill has it's uses. Curious incantation is another button you can press, its a very strong self buff for a tiny cost but its legitimate use is up for debate.
Strong synergy
Highwayman- is obviously at the top of this list. The protect me riposte combination is powerful. I mentioned that double HWM would have similar merits but again having access to an additional heal and the defensive stats really helps the staying power of your team.
Man at arms- If you want to climb to the peak of dodge mountain Man at arms is a key team mate. Just imagining Antiquarian-Antiquarian-MaA-MaA dodging everything in the game bar the few attacks with 200% accuracy is a hilarious thought.
Graverobber- The fact that antiquarian doesn't care that much about being shuffled and has a blight that can hit any rank means she has great synergy with lunge spamming. Graverobber and antiquarian on the same team is a very very squishy team however.
Weak synergy
Vestal- Vestal is by her nature pretty passive so she wants aggressive team mates. Having another healer paired with a vestal isn't as useful since vestal has such amazing healing. It's not a bad thing per se but vestal wants damage dealers to make up for her lack luster offensive prowess which antiquarian doesn't really provide.
Antiquarian is so multi faceted that she can play well with most other classes. Only two of her skills have position restrictions so she can be slotted almost anywhere but if you want her to be able to heal or stack dodge she needs to be in position 3/4
Trinkets
The Master's essence is one of anti's bests trinkets for general use increasing the potency of 3/7 skills.
Candle of life increases her healing while patching up her low durablity.
Ancestor's coat and camouflage cloak are both key for dodge strats since they offer the most dodge per trinket.
Garlic and tough ring both help a lot with her very poor durability. and the -damage of tough ring doesn't really matter to a class like anti.
Like I said I don't particularly love antiquarian so my bias against her might be more evident here than in any future analysis. Darkest dungeon is such a great game because even thought I think Antiquarian is a weak character I can STILL see some genuine use cases for her. Like before let me know your thoughts on anti down below!

The horror film industry has no shortage of movies based on real-life events, all with varying accuracy to the events that are being adapted. From impeccably faithful biopics like the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. seen in Selma (2014) to looser comedic outings like the recent parody Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, films based on true stories are easily the most common and sought-after premises by studios for potential projects, as they’re typically far easier to procure the rights for than an established, popular IP. It feels like every other week a new film based on real-life events hits either movie theaters or any of the many streaming services out there, but every once in a while, a film releases a trailer with the words “Based on a true story” in it that features a premise so bizarre and so absurd that it can’t possibly be true.

YET,, a true story is exactly what inspired the next film from filmmaker Elizabeth Banks, Cocaine Bear (2023), which tells the very real story of, you guessed it, a black bear under the influence of cocaine. Well, to be perfectly honest, the inciting incident and namesake of the film is seemingly the only true event to be seen, originating from an event where a wild Georgian bear helped itself to a large serving of smuggled cocaine when a plane crashed in the state in 1985. The horrific and bloody rampage that the bear embarks on for the film adaptation is fictional, but it also looks like a hell of an absurd good time.

When and Where can you watch Cocaine Bear? Is it on Netflix? What about HBO Max? Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie:

What Is the Release Date for Cocaine Bear? (United States)
Moviegoers everywhere shall be able to see a mammal with a drug addiction wreak havoc and destruction on the state of Georgia when Cocaine Bear premieres exclusively in theaters on Friday, February 24th, 2023.

Is Cocaine Bear Being Released on Streaming?
Audiences who wish to learn just exactly how one of nature’s apex predators ingested at least a kilo of an illicit substance will have to find a theater near them as that’s the place where Cocaine Bear will be available once it premieres later this upcoming February. No announcements in regard to if and when Cocaine Bear will receive a streaming release have not yet been made, but Peacock seems to be a likely streaming home for the dark comedy given it’s a production of Universal Pictures.

Peacock has a limited array of content for free and two main paid subscription plans, the latter two options of which will likely be required should Cocaine Bear arrive there. The base premium subscription costs $5.99 USD per month and features Peacock’s entire catalog of movies and films with limited ads. The second and slightly more expensive premium plus plan costs $9.99 USD per month and removes ads entirely outside of live events and adds the ability to download select titles for offline viewing.

No, Cocaine Bear 2023 will not be on HBO Max since it’s not a Warner Bros. movie. While the company previously released its movies on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day, they have since stopped and have implemented a 45-day window between the theatrical release and streaming release.

Will Cocaine Bear Available On Peacock?

What Is Cocaine Bear About?
Considering the enormous amount Of writing talent that swims in our worldwide creative lake it can often be surprising when, beyond documentaries, we learn of a particular tale being true. However, sometimes the best and most ludicrous stories can only be the work of reality, and Cocaine Bear is one such narrative. Of course, exact details regarding the originality of the plot are yet to be seen but, with a true story as incredible as this one, it would be fair to suggest the writers may stay true to life.

The tale 0f Cocaine Bear dates back to an incident in December 1985. A notorious and previously convicted drug smuggler, who also happened to be a former narcotics officer, was piloting a plane when he realized his cargo was far too heavy. In an attempt to lighten his load, he dropped a duffel bag full of cocaine out of the plane. The pilot, Andrew C. Thornton II, then decided to chase after his fallen goods but, upon attempting to open his parachute, failed and plummeted to his death below. This may already seem like a wild tale, but it is truly only the beginning. The duffel bag of cocaine, worth almost fifteen million US dollars, then fell into the hands of a 175-pound American black bear who decided to consume it. The narrative of the film is likely to follow the events of the bear who, under this incredible influence, went on a drug-fueled killing spree. The rest of the story, due to its non-fiction nature, has been well documented, however, to avoid any potential spoilers for the film it may be wise to leave the tale at that juncture.

2023.03.28 20:35 stking1984 Frustrated with Dynamic Groups

Hi everyone,
Ive been very frustrated with dynamic groups. So far ive used SCCM to limit the scope just by keeping it set to Pilot in the Co-Management settings and using collections with queries to control what gets uploaded.
Edit: why am I doing this? To ensure no servers are uploaded and while the Intune policies are not supposed to apply, it's still questionable and some policies make note that they do apply to Server 2008 and up. Also what if in the future they announce support for servers and then we don't filter that at a later date? OS based on filters on OS version are not good either due to Server 2019 matching version 10.0.1.X which is the same as Windows 10.
Next up, when trying to create different rings using dynamic collections it doesnt like if a system has more than 1 membership with a ring associated to it. I cant easily define a ring by an app thats installed or by a group of people dynamically. Especially when they are deprecating OU. I understand nested groups is *coming* but only in the additive state.
With that said I can create manual groups but ill have to review them each month to make sure I have an appropriate number of systems in the group that are active. (based on system reimages/replacements/offboardings/onboardings etc).
With that, we cannot currently do a negate/exclude in a dynamic group with another group? How are we to manage groups in Intune with the serious lack of functionality compared to SCCM?
How does everyone else do it?
Thanks

2023.03.28 19:31 smithinho Taking a building company to small claims court

I’m in England. Not to long ago we had a flat roof replaced by a building company. That company provided me with a 20 year guarantee for the work. No less then a month later it’s leaking and now I can’t contact them at all, they had agreed to come fix the problem by replacing the felt on the roof, I have this in a text message. But now they have blocked my number. I know this because when I ring it goes straight to voicemail but if I ring from a different number it rings.
The work in total cost £4,250 and now it’s leaked more then it ever had and my ceiling is also ruined because of the leaks.
I had a quick look at the fees to take something to small claims court which would be around £200 in this case so I’m pretty much wondering would it be worth while and even if I was to win isn’t it a whole other thing to actually get them to pay up ?

2023.03.28 18:15 peaceman14 Humans don't do magic Chapter 6: The begining of the end

Previous

Across the seas separating the dwarven Alpine from the lush beaches of california, The green forests stretched off into the horizon covering the rolling hills and towering mountains in a blanket of green, slowly fading away to reveal grey rock and white snow as the mountains stretched higher and higher into the clouds. The howl of the wind was all that could be heard from these mountains.Distant screeching of jet engines and howl of artillery shells and rockets quickly replaced the calm rustling of leaves and quiet chirping of birds. In an instant, the white capped mountains of the Dwarven alpine were covered in a blanket of fire, beginning the long grind of the mountains into the ground
Enhanced by dwarven magic, perfected by experience and technology accumulated from years of warfare, the human arsenal had no shortage of explosives. The tall mountains stretching high into the clouds will soon find themselves flattened given the time, just as the Dwarven Archmage had flattened the Tibetan mountain range almost a year ago, humanity will now return the favour. It will take time but soon the dwarves will find themselves cornered, but for now the bombardment served to ensure that no dwarven force would be able to cross the sea and reinforce the patches of resistance forces hiding underground in human territory.
Underneath these towering chunks of rock, The Dwarven city of Ganzir sprawled outwards across a rocky plateau, surrounded by an abyss that led directly to the planet’s mantle, High above the city distant rumbling gently shook the stone roof. The dwarves would be safe from all human attacks for now but they knew it is only a matter of time before the humans would find some way of circumventing their underwise air tight defence. Smoke stacks spewing black smog, churning out new equipment for the dwarven war effort, electrical cables stretched haphazardly from them reaching every building providing them with the lifeblood of any sufficiently industrialised civilization with the help of primitive coal generators stolen from the humans. Within this city. A dwarf by the name of Hallthrim was running up the steps of a towering stone palace, a loud creaking echoed throughout its massive halls,as the dwarf signalled the large stone doors to be opened, inside tall dwarven statues stood, holding gigantic braziers which served as the halls sole light sources. Its decorated pillars stretch up towards the tall ceiling, strolling into the chamber Hallthrim walked up the red carpeted floor towards a second reinforced stone door. Which opened to reveal a single empty stone throne overlooking a long wooden table, filled with paper maps, and stone figurines, around which 5 dwarves clad in shining enchanted armour, their hammers, swords and spears, literally glowing in their holsters.1 was sat at the head of the table clad in fur robes and a gold crown with 2 sat on either side of the table, 1 had was clad in shining white the other was clad in polished black. Both bearing a different insignia on their shoulders. On the table itself in the place of several empty chairs were the helmets of several dwarves, laden with shrapnel and bullet holes, placed on their respective parts of the table. The room quite similarly to the last one was silent. The atmosphere was grim, the 3 dwarves stared at the paper map on the table, as another stone figurine that had been silently moving across a part of the map marked as the Neptune Sea, crumbled into rubble before their very eyes with 7 more stationed in what was marked the Ironside highlands following suit.
“ How the hel did this happen!” One of the generals yelled his head in his hands as he watched his division literally crumble before his very eyes, “ A Year ago these insect’s barbaric weapons could barely scratch us!” he yelled
“ Its all because of Baldur! If only that damn idiot hadn’t gotten himself killed.” The dwarf clad in black, with the insignia of a red gryphon slammed the table with his fist.
“ Calm down Treant, none of us could have predicted the humans would have been able to take him down” The dwarf in white bearing the insignia of a golden dragon answered, as yet another similar dragon figurine on the board crumbled.
“Yea, but what shall we do now, Halvar?”
“I…I know not.” He said, his face looking down onto the board in defeat “Forgive me my lord, we have failed you.”
The dwarf at the head of the table sat forward, “ It is alright, the humans have yet to figure out how to properly enter our lands. Let us retreat what we can on the surface and shore up our defences, underground. Lure them into our element.”
“ That is an excellent idea my lord. We shall execute this at once.”
“ I’m sorry to interrupt my lords..but I have a request from the Elven mage we had harboured known as Eva.” Hallthrim interrupted. “ She claims she is on the verge of something big.She just needs a little more time”
“ We have no time for more of her outlandish claims of the power of ‘atoms’ and ‘molecules’……we have invested far too much into her ‘endeavours’ and have received far too little. We had given her everything she had claimed she needed, human databases, human analysis equipment, even the giant metal ring thing that she wanted so badly we had stolen for her yet she has yielded no results.”Halvar yelled, before being interrupted by a distant rumble, followed dust falling from the ceiling
“ Alright, fine, I will pay her a visit and we’ll decide from what she has got so far.” Halvar
“ Thank you my lord.” Hallthrim said before running back out of the war room.
“And in other news, celebrations are erupting across freshly liberated Europe and America as liberation forces have now pushed the remnants of the dwarves off all human lands… Yes you heard that correctly, viewers. Earth is now officially back under human control” A news reporter’s voice reverberated through the speakers of the holodesk in front of Jean, inside a well furnished victorian era style office.Muffled cheers and celebrations of troops and civilians alike could be heard from both outside her door as well as in the streets below as long separated families are finally after 4 years of constant reunited within the Terran capital. The once grim and smog filled industrial zones of the core human territories, was now entirely unrecognisable as multi-colored fireworks lit up the night sky, and the humm of heavy machinery, as well as the typical chatter of the human workforce had been replaced entirely with cheers and pops of fresh champagne bottle being opened. Most of these fresh bottles had text written on their fronts in dwarven tongue, many still held contempt for the dwarves for the enslavement of many of their friends and family, as such they had no quarrel with using the captured dwarven supplies for our own recreational needs. The air itself had a nice lavender scent to it, the once smog filled air completely cleansed of its pollution, thanks to the help of what were once Elven high ranking officers and concentration camp wardens who now with the help of a little invasive surgery and corrective neural implants now ‘willingly’ used their magical abilities to better give back to the human community.
The news report was playing in an open tab next to multiple tabs of wordy military reports and civilian reports, which Jean flipped through disinterestedly with her left hand, whilst taking a sip of her wine with her right. The Orcs had easily capitulated following the neutralisation of their Arcmage, They might have had our access to our military technology but without their Arcmage, they had no idea how to use them in combat, as such many of their tanks ended up dying in a cavalry charge at our more superior tanks and anti-tank infantry squads. Their air force was quickly crippled as the Orcs had no idea what stealth or radar actually meant. Which meant that even with access to advanced stealth jets like the F22 and Su57, many were easily shot down when their pilots engaged our air superiority fighters in head to head combat resembling primitive dogfights of WW2. Or even worse tried to do gun strafing runs on anti-aircraft batteries in open plains with clear skies. Once their human equipment ran out the Orcish tribes quickly agreed to our terms of surrender. They apparently had no problem turning on the Dwarves once we promised them that they could use them as livestock instead of us.
The dwarves however are another problem, though we have pushed them off our lands, finishing them off proves another issue,The dwarven underground tunnel network is immense, and ever changing. Cramped ever shifting underground tunnels prevent us from even beginning to find an entrance to their cities. Not to mention the fact that the earth itself on dwarven ground seems to have an appetite for literally swallowing any heavy equipment that landed on their beaches. Jean had thus ordered a pause to the offensive, having liberated almost all of the human population from their concentration camps and all of our lands. There was simply no reason to even continue with a ground invasion of Dwarven lands. Thus she had given her men a well earned break, for after this week. High command will order a high intensity bombing of dwarven lands, the lights of which this world and even humanity itself has never seen.
Thinking on this, she swiped through another report, a seemingly routine logistical report of the newly liberated CERN. These reports were ordered to be taken by her in order to take account on what human technologies were stolen by the dwarves so as to be able to create effective counters to them should the dwarves decide to employ them, thus Jean would usually overlook reports on the civilian sector, but this one was interesting everything had been accounted for except for the large hadron collider, an obsolete piece of research equipment that was supposed to discover new quantum particles. That had since been turned into a tourist exhibit in the early 2050s. Now why would the Dwarves want that, of all the equipment in cern and all the military industrial complexes they had access to, they decided to take the one thing that was effectively useless? She had vigilantly read through all the logistical reports, fearing that our hydrogen centrifuges, nuclear reactor cores, or even calcutrons would be found missing but they were all there. Instead the dwarves took a tourist attraction? She leaned back into her office chair and stared at the ceiling overhead for a few moments, before getting up from her chair and walking towards her office window.
The celebrations continued to echo through the hallway outside her office as well as in the streets below. She looked out above the squat military factories into the well lit streets and towering skyscrapers of the residential districts, which stretched high into the skies, fireworks launching from their roofs.
For this first time in 3 years, the threat of extinction has been lifted, For the first time, soldiers and pilots have the chance to stand down, and for the first time, our missile silos and artillery pieces that line the grand wall in the distance lay silent.Silently watching over the large sprawling cityscape and industrial sprawl below. 3 long years of war, death and misery had finally seemed to pay off. The Elves and Orcs have been defeated and the Dwarves are on the brink of joining them soon. She breathed in the lavender scented air, through her open window the skies were clear and the full moon shone bright in the night sky, “Maybe I’m overthinking this.” She muttered to herself, it is likely the Dwarves simply did not understand how we manufacture and create our nuclear weapons and went for the flashiest and most alien looking thing present.
“ Marshall!” a voice shouted from the street below, it was one the members of high command, currently shitfaced, with a bottle of Dwarven brew in his hand surrounded by other members of command all equally wasted. “ When are yer joining us.”
Jean looked down and smiled, “ I’ll be there in a bit!” She called.
“ Your working too hard Ma’am come on down and enjoy yourself a bit, we know your part robot but it can’t hurt to live a little.” Another officer shouted
“ Yea! Science assistant Kim here suggested that we test the capabilities of the cyber-liver we installed. ”The ballistics division head added
“ What? I did not say that!..” She shouted playfully punching Frederick in the shoulder,
Jean looked down endearingly at her celebrating team, it had been forever since she last had a proper celebration. Walking back into her office, she closed her holoprojector before leaving, to join the celebrating crowd below. She was sure she was just overthinking this.
Meanwhile, in the lush green jungles of the Elven Archipelago, A mix of white concrete and clear glass skyscrapers had been built alongside the towering trees of the thriving Elven megapolis. Inside one of these massive trees, Marshall Jean was taking a tour, accompanied by Fredrick who was now walking with the aid of a black cane. His cybernetics was making a slow recovery after the encounter with the Orcish Archmage had nearly fried half his brain. A few power armoured guards accompanied the 2 as a security detail and led by an Elf known as Professor Greenstead. The newly appointed Governor and liaison between the human government and their newly acquired Elven colonies. Having been head of an Elven group known by the Elves as the Human Rights Activists, her group had worked alongside captured or separated human military forces to help break out and save many human lives from Arcane experimentation and concentration camps. At the price of being branded heretics by her own government, in the end when the war had ended, the human expeditionary force had found her and her group hidden deep in the jungles of the fringe islands within a small camouflage town which housed thousands of rescued humans. So as a recognition of their actions she was appointed the new governor of the Elven Colonies and her closest officers were appointed as high ranking administrative staff.
The corridor around them had a homely feel, but yet mystical. The walls were made of oak bark while the floors were polished stone brick. Many smaller wooden doors flanked the Marshall’s entourage, with Elves, clad in blue robes running up and down the corridors with scrolls in hand. Leading the Marshall down the corridor was a tall elf, with red hair. She was clad in green robes and walked with a certain spring in her step. Her aura was extremely energetic and lively, as she introduced the Marshall and the Director to the facility.
After a short walk the entourage came across a large open wooden door, which opened up to a massive clearing, a wooden spiral staircase, sprawled both up and down as far as the eye could see, leaving quite a large empty space in the centre of the stairwell, where a steel bridge led to an elevator that was being built in the centre of the stairwell. Around it many wooden platforms floated up and down with Elven scholars riding upon them, their arms filled with scrolls, accompanied by human scientists. Human scientists walked alongside the Elven mages up and down the spiral staircase, rushing to their respective labs or arcane chambers and classrooms.
“And now that you are familiar with the dorms, here is the central staircase. Each level of the tree has been specialised to a different field of arcane discovery, with a new level expansion being dedicated to the field of combining the Human Physics research with Elven Water magics. That is if your grace would allow us that honour that is.`` The Elf spoke,
“ Thank you Professor Greenstead, and, please do call me Marshall. We humans are not governed by the imperial system.” The Marshall replied to the lively professor.
“ Ahh of course! You humans are governed after a ‘Merry to crazy’ right?” Greenstead smiled.
“ A Meritocracy professor.” Frederick corrected
“ Yes! A government where the ruling class is decided by the academic or military achievements of the individual, Rather than bloodlines. Maybe if we Elves had that kind of sense we could have avoided the war altogether.” The professor said, her smile disappearing for a second as she led the group down a level through a glass auto door and into another smaller corridor. Instantly the environment was a far cry from what it was, natural wooden bark was quickly replaced with concrete and glass, the plank wood floor was replaced with that of white sterile ceramic tiles. To the left and right large glass windows peered into labs filled with a mix of Elven magical equipment and human electronics, stone runic tablets stood next to human electronic ones, while Elven spell scrolls sat upon keyboards in front of flatscreens or holo displays. Large biovats stood upon floors inscribed with arcane circles. Inside Human Scientist, worked alongside Orcish warlocks, and Elven Mages to further their understanding of all their respective fields, “Anyway, here we are at the Aracnoscience level.” The professor said as she introduced them to the labs which surround them. “ Thanks to the approval and funding from you Mr Fredrick, we have made tremendous breakthroughs in multiple fields, the labs you see here are dedicated to life magic or as you humans like to call it, biology.” She said as their group walked down the corridor. “ Ahh, its no problem professor, Though I am sorry we had to put that chip in your head in order to do this. It's just… the safety of our own people has to come first, you know having no magic and all that.”
“It's no problem at all, director, as long as it does not hinder our abilities ‘most’ of us are ok with it.”
“ Ah, that's great to know and all, professor, but why exactly have you called us here?” Marshall Jean interrupted as they continued to walk down the rows of laboratories and libraries.
“ Oh Oh, I’m glad you asked Marshall, its because of this.” She said as they reached the end of the corridor stopping before a large stone door, carved with runes and engravings. She gently knocked on the stone door, causing it to slowly creak open. Greeting them behind the right side of the doorframe, was a human scientist in a white lab coat, holding an electronic table. Her long blonde hair tied in a bun. To her right was a slightly taller red haired Elf clad in white robes and holding a wooden tablet in her hand, and to her left a towering green muscular Orc warlock with black hair clad in a similar white lab coat which looked like it’s buttons were about to burst should the Orc decide to flex and holding a 2 metre long wooden staff tipped with the skull of an oxen. “ These are the researchers that are responsible for the breakthrough.” Professor Greenstead said gesturing towards the team of 3, whilst stepping into the poorly lit stone antichamber. A large transparent glass tank was placed in the centre of the room, The stone circle around it was inscribed with various symbols compromising Elven script. In front of the tank was the cloned bodies of the 3 archmages, Dwarf, Elf and Orc, Each of the bodies was placed in the centre of an Orcish Arcane symbol. Their skulls were cut open and their cloned brains were removed and placed at their feet, facing the tank with an array of electrodes covering each brain, their wires linking them to the tank. The tank itself had Dwarven Rune carved into the base reading absorb. Inside the tank was a sort of brain, it was suspended in the air by wires hanging from the roof of the tank which then stretched down the back of the tank into the base, on closer inspection, the brain was not organic, it looked like a brain from afar but instead of the grey squishy biomass, it was made of warm black steel. The back of the room was a large table filled to the brim with human computers, Elven wooden tablets, and scrolls as well as Orcish bone charms.
“ Hello, It is…an hon…a pleasure to meet with you, Marshall, I am lead scientist Amelia. These are my colleagues Guranak and Windstrider.” She said introducing herself and her colleagues.
“ Please the honour is mine,do explain to me wha.. What exactly am I looking at right now”
“ YES!” Amelia’s face lit up, a little similar to Fredrick when he had first introduced his breakthrough in enchantment.
“ We have, after extensive…very extensive… research and effort, created an artificial blank slate,a mind capable of absorbing the souls of the archmage without their memories and in turn wield, their magical abilities as well.” She explained gesturing to the tank. As she led the group around the circle. “ However, what you are seeing is simply a testbed we had set up to test whether what kinds of minds could take that kind of magic. Guranak and Windstrider will explain the rest” She said, passing the explanation on to her colleagues as the group approached the large table at the back of the room.
“ Souls, and memory are very hard to separate, so we use elven life magic to leave memory in body while Orcish soul magic absorbs the soul.” Guranak began
“ Yes indeed, however the mana released from separating 2 fundamental parts of life from one another will squash any human, Elven, Orc or Dwarven mind, it has even proven too much from some of the ‘syn-tee.thick’ minds you humans have made. Thus we have made use of your new found mastery of dwarven enchantments to help resist this mana explosion.” Windstrider continued
“However since according to Guranak, and Windstrider our clones don’t technically have the proper souls, we would require the use of the original bodies and brains of the Archmages to create one capable of wielding the full might of these 3 formidable foes.” Amelia completed.
“ So your telling me, this thing would allow the user to use the power of all 3 archmages.”
“Yea.” Amelia answered, Meanwhile Fredrick was just staring at the tank in awe, his mouth agape.
“ Holy crap, you guys actually did it, my guys have been working on this for years t o no avail and you guys finally did it.” Frederick smiled, a wide grin appearing on his face. “ The possibilities behind this are endless.”
“ I don’t know, is there a possibility this thing might go rogue?” Marshall Jean asked
Amelia let out a worried sigh, “ Yes we thought of that, and that is why we need to ask you for one more thing….” She said, looking away for a second. “ We need a human host, more specifically, you. We need you to host it. ”
“ Wait, wait ,wait…” Frederick turned away from the tank. “ You want the Marshall to host this.”
“ I mean why not, Being the only human to ever merge with another mind and survive, The Marshall would be the best candidate to host this thing.”
“ Hmm, I see, and what are the chances of failure.”
“ Unknown, we have not had the chance of merging the testbed to a human host and we do not know what that might do to the person’s personality, or even soul for that matter.”
“ Then we cannot pro…”
“ I’ll do it.” Jean interrupted.
“What? We don’t know what it could do to you. You might go insane, die, or worse.”
“ I’ll do it, Fredrick, this… this thing would be the key to ending the war once and for all.”
“ Marshall, I cannot allow the Jeopardisation of humanity’s greatest asset.”
“ Please, for once just trust me.”
Frederick looked at the Marshall in the eyes before turning to look at the machine
“ Alright, but I will be overseeing the process.”
“ YES! Alright!” Amelia jumped into the air, cheering.
“ You will not regret this, Ma am. I am confident this will work.”
A few day later, in a lab in the human capital in the same facility that turned the tide of the war, the facility that gave humanity the power to save itself from extinction. Jean was hooked up to the synthetic brain, the cloned dwarven brain that had once resided on the nape of her neck was now removed, replaced with sprawling cables linking her directly to a glass tank with the synthetic brain. It was set up the same as seen before in the Human-Elven labs, except the 3 bodies were in different stages of decay as opposed to the fresh ones before. Their brains were still fresh though as they had been kept as fresh as possible to provide the blueprints for their clones. Frederick stood in front of Jean, who was lying on an inclined bed. Amelia and her team were watching the 2 from a glass viewing window above them.
“ Are you ready for this Jean?”
“ Ready as I’ll ever be.”
“ Alright, this is going to hurt.” He said, signalling a thumbs up to the team above. Instantly, an arc of electricity surged through the tank, its runes began to glow, as did the Orcish symbols and the Elvish circle. The bodies and the brains began to hover upward as electricity in the form of lightning came from the base of the tank, and arcane energies alike flowed from the circle and the texts through them. Soon the brains began to disintegrate its fragments flowing into the tank through the base of the tank, through the dwarven runes, their biological mass being absorbed by the runes and converted into an electrical signal which was sent directly to the mechanical brain which now surged with power. Jean screamed in pain and agony as this happened, the power of the synthetic mind being passed onto her own, sending every single pain receptor left in her body into overload. Passing out from the pain soon after, The lights began to flicker and soon after the bodies began disintegrating as well, their biomass quickly turned to ashes before exploding, coating the entire room in ash. The pulses of electricity slowed and the runes all began to slowly dim. Once the pulses stopped and the runes went dark. The room fell silent, the humm of the overhead lighting the only thing making a sound. “ Jean?” Frederick whispered as he slowly walked over to her. Jean let out a loud gasp as she shot upright. A muffled cheer could be heard from the viewing room above.
“ Oh thank god.” Frederick said, “ How do you feel.”
“ Amazing!” She said unplugging herself from the synthetic mind. She felt powerful, unlike the power she had before with the dwarf, one of pure rage. This time she felt in control, but she did see the world completely differently. She could see the blood flowing through Fredrick’s veins, she could see his soul, a bright blue glow just above his brainstem. Its a shame she couldn’t have any of the memories absorbed, having been corrupted by memes and all. Though She could still feel the air move in and out of his lungs as he breathed. Similarly she saw this through the one way glass of the viewing deck. Every air current, or movement she could see. Similarly, the earth underneath her didn’t even feel properly solid anymore. She felt it move and slide above the mantle of the planet, even ever so slightly. It felt like clay that she could just… A boulder was immediately lifted from the ground, tearing through the ceramic tile from and slamming through the ceiling tearing a hole all the way to the roof before being flung into the sky and off into the horizon.
“Damn.” she said staring at the roof. “ Oops” we let out a weak smile. Frederick was staring at the ceiling with his mouth agape, “holy shit… it worked” he muttered, before looking back at the Marshall. “Now that you have their magic, what will be our next move?” He asked recomposing himself.
“ I think…it's time we put an end to this Once and For all.”

2023.03.28 18:04 Stophera Review - Cartier Juste Un Clou Ring in 18K White Gold with (lab) diamonds from XY

After gaining so much knowledge from this group, I wanted to jump in with my first review in hopes of helping others with their purchasing decisions. As background I have ordered jewelry from Miss Chen, LeixLuxury and XY. I take accuracy, quality and price into the decision of who to purchase from. For diamond jewelry I like XY because of the option to use lab diamonds, which look similar to natural diamonds (from what I've read you need a device to accurately tell the difference between lab and natural) with a much lower price. While I know MC is considered by many as the best for Cartier, her price is roughly double what I paid for this ring.
Disclosure - I have not received any incentive to write this review

Timeline
1/30 - Inquired about the item, along with a few others I bought along with the ring. I finalized my selection and sent the money same day.

Authentic
CRN4748700 - Juste un Clou ring - White gold, diamonds - Cartier
CRN4748700 - Juste un Clou ring - White gold, diamonds - Cartier
Quality 8/10 - For the quality I focused mainly on the weight of the ring and the appearance of the diamonds and metal. There is a decent weight to the ring, especially given its relatively small size. The diamonds are all accurately placed and have a nice sparkle, without looking overly sparkly and fake. The silver appears to be a brighter than the original, which I expect to tone down with wear.
Accuracy 9/10 - I have seen the authentic in person, though I have not had the opportunity to compare my ring side-by-side with the original, so these details are primarily based on online resources. The diamond pattern appears to have consistent placement with the authentic (there are three rows of diamonds with the center row aligning with the point at the end of the ring; the diamonds on the point of the ring, around the nail top and on the nail top all appear to be accurately placed). The width of the band and nail head all look accurate but take that with a bit of a grain as I'm comparing it to the online pictures. Slight reduction points because the engraving on the inside of the ring is a bit light, but that's not something anyone will see when I'm wearing it.
Rep Satisfaction Rating 9/10 - I'm extremely pleased with this ring. I think the quality and accuracy are both great. The main things I will be focusing on with wear are the silver toning down a bit and whether or not any of the diamonds are lost.
Seller Satisfaction Rating 9/10 - XY has always been a great seller to deal with. I think they were extremely busy after the new year, so there was a time when I inquired about the status of my order and it took some time for a reply. I've had 10/10 satisfaction purchases with them in the past.
CPR [Cost Performance Ratio] 10/10 - I think this is an incredible option for the price. For 1/13 of the price I got a ring that looks incredible and I will be proud to wear. This rating is subject to decrease if the diamonds fall out as I think they would be incredibly difficult to replace.
The Wrap Up 8
I would feel comfortable wearing the item into the boutique after letting the item age. I would not feel comfortable taking it off and letting the SA inspect it, as I think the engraving would be a pretty good giveaway. That said, it's not something you can see with everyday wear.

Also known as ?????? ???? Production companies : Warner Bros. Pictures. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Gaslight would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As Gaslight neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above). “I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Gaslight, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Gaslight.) “And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Gaslight, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise . "By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful. There's nothing so wrong with “Gaslight” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Gaslight” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.
It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naive delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. 2023.03.28 16:58 hollyann712 Need help picking an oval size for custom diamond cut from Mona

Hello all!
I've posted here before, but I'm honestly so torn on what to do.
After a lot of thought, my fiance and I decided that we would purchase a moissanite as the centre stone for our engagement ring that we are designing together. I know it's a bit of an unpopular idea here, but we're doing this with the intention of "upgrading" the centre stone to a lab diamond for an anniversary later when we can afford to do so - our wedding is in September and my fiance recently went back to school for a career change, so we're cutting some costs where we can.
I love Mona's diamond cut ovals (this is where we plan to buy our moissy), but the lab diamonds we saw in person really stole my heart. Unfortunately the most affordable way to buy lab diamonds (sites like Ritani) require me to do all of the research myself and the added stress of trying to find the "right" diamond was making my anxiety a mess.
All that being said, I'm hoping for some help on choosing my moissy size. I love ovals that are a bit elongated, but not terribly so. I was mostly looking at lab diamonds in the 1.38-1.48 LxW ratio range, with carat sizes between 1.5-1.8 carat (leaning more in the 1.6-1.7 range but that was dependent on price).
For the life of me I can't see to find a chart to help me figure out the carat equivalent mm sizing for a moissy. I've seen so many different charts that list a 9x6 mm oval as anything from a 1.5 ct equivalent to 2+ ct equivalent. Since we'll be replacing the stone in ~5 years, I want to get something as close to the desired diamond size as possible so there won't be many issues with re-setting the stone.
For reference:
I've been mostly looking in the 9.5x6.5mm (1.46 LxW), 9x6mm (1.5 LxW), 8.5x6mm (1.42 LxW) and 9x6.3mm (1.42 LxW) range but I'm not sure if this is the correct ballpark sizing for a 1.6-1.7 ct future lab diamond.
Thank you in advance! <3
