2023.06.02 11:38 MrBablu Recommend a budget printer with good print quality in both color and b/w. I will be printing bookmarks/stickers/posters and using the foil lamination method as well.

Will be printing Posters, Stickers & Bookmarks and might print on translucent/transparent sheets. Also will be printing for foil art/lamination.
I am from India so please suggest printers that are available in India and are budget-friendly as I am just starting out.
I know that inkjets are best for color printing in detail
#Minimum Requirements: - Budget: ~INR 15,000 - Country: India - Color or black and white: Color + Black/White - Laser or ink printer: not sure - New or used: not sure - Multi-function: not sure - Duplex Printing: not sure - Home or business: Home but need a good quality print. - Printing content: Artworks in the form of posters/bookmarks/stickers - Printing frequency: not sure - Pages per minute : N/A - Page size: A4 is enough for now - Device printing from: PC and maybe phone if the feature doesn't cost extra money. - Connection type: USB mainly but wifi is also fine.

2023.06.02 09:30 ViperTheKillerCobra Why Set Rotation would NOT Work in Yu-Gi-Oh!

I never thought that I would get a need to make this post, but a certain cis white male Yugituber has invoked a recent push in the idea that Set Rotation is the solution to a majority of Yu-Gi-Oh's problems, and that it's very reasonable for it to be implemented, be it replacing the main format, or otherwise.
Before I explain my reasoning as to why this is a ludicrous idea, let's go over what Set Rotation is, and what it COULD potentially fix.
What is Set Rotation? (No it's not the card)
For the few of you who don't know, Set Rotation is the main gimmick of some other TCG's 'Standard' formats, i.e. MTG and Hearthstone. The idea is that the only cards that are legal in this Standard format are cards that have been printed in the past 2 or 3 years, and any sets that go past this timer 'Rotate Out', and become no longer legal for the format.
So, what would this potentially mean for Yu-Gi-Oh?
Slows Down Powercreep
This is the big one, and the main thing pro-rotation players hone in on as to why Set Rotation would be a step in the right direction. With every card being on a soft time limit, Konami would no longer have an incentive to make each set stronger than the last to drive in sales, and can instead sell sets on the notion of "This old set has less time to live, but this new set is on a fresh limit." This theoretically means that the rampant powercreep we've been seeing these last few years can be curved down majorly, and we can go back to the strategic back-and-forth gameplay we've been yearning for.
Curation of Good Formats
This next one is a little more nuanced. With the need to keep track of 10 000+ cards no longer on the menu, Konami can have an easier time designing exciting, interesting formats for the players to try out. They can print archetypes without the sorry that this random card from 2005 would break it, or that this random 2018 staple blows it out of the water. They could even pick and choose cards that have since rotated and reprint them in a core set, or as some have proposed, a yearly "Base Set", containing all the staples that have since rotated out of Standard.
And... that's about it! Those are pretty much all there is to Set Rotation, and how it could fix many of Yu-Gi-Oh's issues. And to be fair, curving down powercreep and the potential for fun gameplay experiences does look very enticing.
Let me explain why it isn't so simple.
25 Years of Fans for What?
Of the big 3 card games, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! is the only one where its main format does not feature Set Rotation. It would be pretty disingenuous to say that a negligible amount of people were drawn to this game FOR its lack of Set Rotation, instead of DESPITE it. And a large amount of the playerbase, and TCG players in general, don't appreciate their cards being on a blatant timer. "Well, they were on a timer anyways thanks to powercreep!" Not to the staples, they aren't. Generic cards last a solid 6? 7 years of consistently good use until a new card takes its place? And while it's true that archetypes certainly face a large brunt of the powercreep problem, many players simply don't care. They want to keep playing that rogue deck they always liked, and it being no longer legal due to just being too old is a real downer on them. This leads us to...
It Can be an Alternate Format! Or Can it?
It's no surprise that Konami is absolute shit at managing alt formats. This, alongside some other points I'll get to later, is an example of Set Rotation simply asking waaaay too much out of Konami. If a Rotation format were to be introduced alongside the current, "Legacy" format we're all familiar with, if Konami doesn't push it out the ass and shove it down our throats, it's natural thanks to the past 25 years of its history that the Legacy format would be more popular. Simply adding Set Rotation this far into a game's life requires extremely careful planning from a company, and extreme customer loyalty. And Konami does not check either of those boxes.
I Like Money
You can construct this as an advantage for Konami, but if they don't want to heavily support two ongoing formats at the same time, the price of the game can become a major issue. The current price of the game wouldn't be going anywhere. If Kashtira, Purrely and VS are any indicators, just because cards are new and being opened a lot doesn't mean they'll be cheap. Now add on that you can only play these cards for all of 3 years maximum before you have to invest all over again into another deck core as well as all of this new format's staples. This could be one of the reasons why Standard in Magic The Gathering died out, alongside WOTC removing the primary incentive to play Standard in the first place.
Oops! Legacy Support!
This is probably the biggest physical hurdle that needs to be jumped if we want Set Rotation to be a thing. A huge amount of Konami's current product is the printing of support for archetypes much, much older than 3 years in order to push it into meta viability. This would, simply put, not be able to exist in a rotating format. A common counterpoint thrown around is that whenever Konami prints legacy support, they can just announce that the archetype its for is now in the Standard rotation!
There are many problems with this.
Firstly, this would probably be the nail in the coffin for TCG and OCG never being able to unify as formats. And the stick in the mud is VJump Promos. Every VJump magazine, the OCG prints a mechanically exclusive card into it, usually one that supports an archetype. If this would bring it into the Standard rotation, all of a sudden we have one format that has Sky Striker legal, and one that doesn't. Secondly, some archetypes are just too old or too big to be reprinted. If CYAC were to release with this Standard format in mind, we would be seeing a TON of old-ass Superheavy Samurai cards shooting up in price, cards in sets now out of print, so Konami wouldn't even be making any money off of those purchases. And if Konami were to, say, print the archetypes the new cards are supporting in some of of supplementary set, not only does that have the possibility to bring product fatigue, do you really want the entire HERO and Blackwing archetype again?
Simply Overhaul Your Game
This is another point in Konami just not being competent or trustworthy enough to pull something like this off. Set Rotation could be implemented, IF Konami heavily supports alt formats, IF Konami decides to overhaul their entire product design, IF Konami is willing to curb their powercreep, and IF Konami even wants to take this major, major risk in the first place. That's a lot of big ifs towards a company that can't even livestream their events half the time, and a company that made fucking Metal Gear Survive.
Other, Healthier Solutions
Many of the pro-rotation players argue that this is the way to solve Yu-Gi-Oh's, admittedly, large, Powercreep problem. I argue that there are other ways to solve this. Ones that aren't as large of risks for Konami, ones that don't overhaul the game as we know it, and ones that can reliably provide a good break from current Yu-Gi-Oh!, which is realistically what we all want.
Pretty much the only alternative formats Konami is willing to pour some attention to are Speed Duels and Time Wizard. GOAT and Edison appear to be doing the best out of the legacy formats we have, and Konami has even shown some interest in it with Hidden Arsenal Chapter 1, a set that printed a whole bunch of Edison cards and even gave us an un-errata for Armory Arm. All it takes is one or two sets to make either one of these formats a budget friendly option, and Konami can just sit back and not need to use that brain of theirs. A non-rotating, static format that you can always fall back on to have a good time when current Yu-Gi-Oh! is getting bothersome on you. Speed Duels are doing quite well, with Konami opting for single boxes, DUDE style, instead of the traditional booster pack format, and they once again give players a nice refresher when they're tired of getting Zone-locked for 9 or getting Kaiju'd for the tenth game in a row.
I hope that I've reasonably laid out my reasoning as to why Set Rotation, while having good intentions, is reasonably, and practically not possible for Konami to implement in this day and age.
TLDR: Set Rotation helps for Powercreep and making good formats, but IMO ignores 25 years of history, Konami's refusal towards alt formats, cost, and product design. GOAT/Edison or Speed Duels are probably better for something like this.

2023.06.02 07:33 cybernetic-lotus Looking for geeky friends who also like dancing/techno/drinking

So not sure if appropriate to post here (I'm more a lurker than a poster), but essentially what the title says because Bumble for Friends is killing me lol.
I (F29) do have a wide group of friends, but I have very specific hobbies and interests, and it's hard to find others (especially other women) who seem to fit into the venn diagram of geeky af but also into going out and letting loose.
Some bg - I studied history and law a while back, and love a lengthy deep dive into geopolitics and philosophy over a few drinks. I'm also a huge sci-fi fan and currently work in a sector experimenting with emerging technologies! So not only would I love exchanging insane history stories (yes including all the dark shit), but I really enjoy speculating about the future and geeking out about tech. I'm not one to shy away from some deep/heavy discussions, and it is super fulfilling to be learning new things from other people. Some of the best drinks seshes I've had were just a neverending hours-long conversation, jumping naturally from topic to topic.
Other geeky things I'm into: pop culture things, movies, anime (love Berserk), philosophy, gaming, poker, drawing and writing short sci-fi stories. Been getting into more comics and I buy graphic novels now and then.
Now the even harder part - music is a big part of my life and I love techno, retrowave and synthwave. Especially some dark industrial techno, stuff that reminds you of that underground rave scene in the Matrix. Or 80s inspired videogame music and classics like home resonance. I like to dress up a bit Matrixy myself, with the dark out there make-up; or sometimes I rock up in a print t-shirt and jeans and just want to enjoy the music.
Tbh, I'm a bit embarrassed about the lengths I'm going to in order to find someone I vibe with (at a deeper level), but I'm an introverted extrovert and it's been very hard finding new people who can do both i.e. chill around and have deep conversations with me, but also keen to match my energy in going out a bit more spontaneously / dressing up and going to a techno rave.
Anyway, yeah, a dilemma. So if there's anyone out there who likes all of this stuff too, I would love to get to know you. Please DM me.
(For disclosure, I have a long term partner and I am NOT looking for anything romantic. I cannot emphasise this enough as I know my interests are male-leaning. But I am a deep person and I just want something more meaningful, platonically speaking. And perhaps slightly ironically, I thought I'd give reddit a try - I assume I'd get a different demographic to Bumble Friends - honestly, why are 99% of profiles just depressingly bland and generic lol. Like, no, brunch is not a personality.)

2023.06.02 07:01 PhysicianChips My step by step guide to using a bindery (Houchen)

My step by step guide to using a bindery (Houchen)
I know there a people out there who are contemplating getting some comics custom bound but do not know what to expect, so I decided to make a step by step guide of what I did with my last set of custom binds and hopefully it will assist someone thinking about getting into custom bound comics. This is how I prefer to prep and make them, but this is not the only way. This is not meant to be definitive but a good jumping off point. For this particular set I used Houchen Bindery.
Step 1 – Preparation.
The first thing I do is order the entire series in the order I want them to be in the final custom bind. (With Houchen they have a minimum order quantity, so you really need to order at least 2 volumes per order)

https://preview.redd.it/czmu2elncj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=38e9dd986210682d4a8a14878c695a2b957e3055
After I have set them in order, I get to work prepping them for binding. While not necessary, as they will do this for you, I like to remove the covers myself. I personally prefer to remove the covers for a few reasons. Number one is there are some pages I don’t want included in my binds (title pages of trades, extra adds/previews of other books at the ends of single issues, etc) so I remove them as well. Number two it gives me a better understanding of exactly how thick each volume will be as no covers reduces thickness. Number three I can split trades up into separate volumes, which I have needed to do multiple times either because without it I will have a super thick volume and a thin one and I want to even it out or I want to order issues differently for an event jumping though multiple books. And finally number four is it is surprisingly easy to do, as I will explain. (I was terrified the first time I did it, as I thought I would wreck my book but I have never had a problem yet)
When removing a cover for a trade paperback I take the cover in one hand and the rest of the book I set on the edge of a counter or tabletop and put my other hand on the rest of the book. Then I pull the cover down and away from the spine. Most of the time the first page (title page) is glued to the cover so it easier to leave that page with the cover if you are not wanting to use it. The cover typically just pops off the spine.

https://preview.redd.it/4uhuuy7qcj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d8df96645d25d88bd98d6190c3d40d6dfdeb444
Then I flip the book and remove it from the back as well. The back can be more difficult as some books go all the way to the last page. If that is the case, I usually have the book down flat on the table and while holding it down with one hand tear it along the crease to remove it. Like a paper you have folded and refolded many times it typically tears clean along the crease.

https://preview.redd.it/9xzi283tcj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=1d2c58c48f94a7d296acb8e7a74b8dc7ebe27c07
If there is excess glue along the page (and with any part of this) I opt to destroy the cover and keep the pages intact, as the cover will be discarded anyway.
For single issues I open the cover and hold the rest of the issue in the middle of the open cover and pull the cover out off the staples. This makes two staple sized holes in the cover but leaves the issue itself completely intact.

https://preview.redd.it/a3eg3u4vcj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=c58ad5496e97520bb4e5addbbf025e0cfcad55bf
If I want to remove some pages at the end of a single issue I usually just tear them off, like the back cover mentioned above, as they tear cleanly along the seam. (Careful when handling them after this as the front page will now be loose.)

https://preview.redd.it/a8kck4gwcj3b1.png?width=731&format=png&auto=webp&s=938ae8b9fd23bdb8a9904aa93bf6e92fd758ab1a
After everything is prepared, I organize them into stacks for each volume I am going to have bound. Sometimes I need to move some issues from one stack to the other if one is too thick and I need to keep storylines together.
After I have stacks for each volume how I want them to be I personally wrap them in saran wrap. I wrap it around a couple times horizontally and a few wraps vertically. I have found this the best/most secure way to keep them together. There is no risk than an issue will fall out away from the rest and they are well protected from the top and bottom from being crumpled in transit. Also, it does not damage the pages in any way as it only clings to itself and not the books themselves.

https://preview.redd.it/ju94tb5ycj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=a1d958d5e4c1ac0126a67348dea2cae9bd45c079
Then I take my order forms (that I have printed from the bindery website and filled out) and wrap them around each respective volume and package it in a box I have with whatever packing materials I have. (In a pinch I have found old grocery bags to be a great padding for the box as they are soft and keep the books secure)

https://preview.redd.it/kxepdq00dj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=3434d5f50de9f110860b42334eadee5e67e53567

https://preview.redd.it/2bwxcl51dj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=4afcd2ba8ea9be1410c9ca9fa47ed127af286fb0
Then I mail the box off to the bindery.
Step 2 – Waiting
The hardest step. After I have sent my order off, I need to wait for them to bind them. I typically opt for the graphic cover of my own design for the covers so while I wait, I get the images I want for the covers ready and generally figure out how I want the layout to look. After they have finished binding the books, they send an email with the exact dimensions of each book.
Turnaround times are not exact but for this particular order it was 8 weeks from when I sent it off and when I heard it was ready and dimensions were given to me.

https://preview.redd.it/yfsgwkn2dj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a5c8134f429f7480084d70f140fbbc11bce9ea5

https://preview.redd.it/zhhq4hr3dj3b1.png?width=972&format=png&auto=webp&s=fa2c52959ccbc155e133ab2e09156d1309de5801
Step 3 – Designing the Covers
After getting the dimensions I could officially design the covers.

https://preview.redd.it/ycpqwpt5dj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac207735637586eacfd71889a75775ab32ed4f83
Personally, I use the program GIMP (which is a free open-source Photoshop-like program) with measured gridlines to make sure I am working in the correct layout for the dimensions I have been given. Once I have all the covers how I want them I save them as PDFs and upload them on the website they provided in their email.

https://preview.redd.it/00l5sb07dj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=295513f81bb1293198648ebbadf4d5c7fde1adaf
Then comes the wait again.
Step 4 – Payment
After waiting I was informed that the books were complete and I could now pay for them. For this particular set, from the time I submitted the files to when I was informed the books were complete was 1 ½ weeks. Payment can be made via check or credit card (for an additional fee)

https://preview.redd.it/1g0g2ky8dj3b1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e11ed0457498053e853d452936bf439a5faf91c
Step 5 – Receive the final Custom Bound Comics
One week after I paid, my custom bound comics arrived in the mail. So from start to finish it was about a 3 month process. But now I have some fine comics that I love to display on my shelf.

https://preview.redd.it/7sudoexadj3b1.png?width=760&format=png&auto=webp&s=fdd337070a624aa3ac2d17e91bedda68763740ca

https://preview.redd.it/ewd5e7rcdj3b1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=a985b63c38900fe8ab41686f2376832454db117d

https://preview.redd.it/rvhdeu8edj3b1.png?width=811&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5ca5f000b58bb7974abf60a5d168dcb2879f9d5
I hope this guide is helpful in some way. If you have any questions, please let me know and I would love to hear anything anyone does different as I think multiple perspectives is great to hear for anyone thinking about getting some customs made.
Happy binding.

2023.06.02 06:58 Shyamfuture Zipper monofilament yarn manufacturer: Understanding monofilament yarns & their manufacturing

Zipper monofilament yarn manufacturer: Understanding monofilament yarns & their manufacturing
The properties of a textile yarn are not only reliant on the base material of a yarn the yarn count. The properties of a thread are also determined by the production process to turn the base polymer into the final yarn. There are three main types of yarn: monofilament yarn, multifilament yarn, and spun yarn. These are distinguished by the arrangement of the fibres in the yarn.

https://preview.redd.it/s2d59pxbdj3b1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b807afc62316f3cdb594066e7dc11aebe42ab8a2
Monofilament fibre is strong enough to be helpful without being twisted with other filaments into a yarn. Therefore, monofilament does not facilitate the weaving braiding of the textile industry's tightest and most efficient woven fabrics. The top Zipper monofilament yarn manufacturer in Uttar Pradesh offers the best quality at the best prices.

Spun Vs Filament Yarns

Yarns fall into two primary groups, spun and filament.
Spun yarns are made from staple-length fibres. Staple fibres are short fibres only a couple of inches long - like cotton. But long filament fibres can also be cut up into staple lengths. To make a spun yarn, all of the fibres need to face the same direction; mechanical twisting then holds the fibres together.
  • Filament Yarns
Filament yarns are made from filament fibres. Filament fibres are generally manufactured (except for silk) and have a long fibre length. Because filament fibres are less chaotic than staple fibres, their yarns need deficient amounts of twist to hold them together.

Understanding monofilament yarns

Monofilament yarns consist of a single filament. For example, fishing lines, 3d printing filaments, and strimmer wire are standard monofilaments. These monofilament yarns are produced using the same process as all other filament extrusions, given the same material.
Nylon and polyester filaments are produced using a method called melt spinning. Polymer chips are heated to the material's melting temperature and extruded through a spinneret device, which forces the polymer through a small precision-driven hole that decides the size and shape of the filament.
Once the extruded filament has cooled down somewhat or entirely, it goes through the drawing-out process discussed above, increasing the strength and length of the final yarn. Nylon, for example, is drawn out to four times its non-drawn-out size.
All else being equal, monofilament yarns are the least flexible yarns compared to spun and multifilament yarns. Therefore, clothing made from monofilament fabric is rare. However, it is often woven into fabrics for industrial applications like filtration, where characteristics such as vibration fatigue and work-hardening resistance are valued.

How to Use Monofilament Thread?

When sewing with a monofilament thread, employ a 60-70 weight needle because of the finesse of the thread. Also, you'll want the needle to have a sharp point, like a Microtex needle. The bobbin thread can also be almost anything from lightweight bobbin thread to a 50-wt—cotton thread. You may also even use monofilament thread in the bobbin. If you do, wind the bobbin slowly to keep it from stretching.
Size refers to thickness of the thread. Our monofilament thread sizes vary from almost hair thin and delicate to yarn strong enough for upholstery. As thickness increases, the thread's strength also increases, becomes more visible, and the yards-per-ounce of the thread decrease. The sizes 003 to 011 can be used with most home sewing machines. Size .012 typically requires a commercial device.

https://preview.redd.it/dhl1ulakdj3b1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e33f7861474aade149a0a05adaffcbe9a0f0e716

Monofilament Thread Buying Guide

Monofilament thread, is precisely what its name says - a thread with a single filament. Monofilament thread is semi-translucent and the first choice for sewing the "invisible" stitches. The Monofilament Thread Buying Guide helps customers to get the right thread to meet their needs. Our approach is to help decide if monofilament thread suits your needs, identify which sizes (thicknesses) should be used for typical monofilament applications, and provide specifications for each size.
Our clear and smoke monofilament threads have a semi-translucent quality that helps them blend in with the fabric you are sewing. This makes monofilament thread a brilliant choice for blind stitching, making exposed stitches or seams as much "invisible" as possible. It is also a great alternative if you cannot find a thread colour that matches your fabric. Monofilament thread feels like a fishing line but is too prone to tangling on reels. The monofilament thread goes up to about 0.012 inches, whereas the fishing line usually starts at 0.013 inches. Use clear monofilament with light colours and smoke monofilament with dark colours for the best results.

2023.06.02 03:09 SkinPlayful7759 Manager not managing (rant)

Ok long story short I’ve been working at staples for almost a year now. I’ve worked register, copy and print, was training for supervisor for print then I got transferred to be the inventory specialist. There’s 11 people “working” here but only 4 of us who actually do our jobs. All four of us have complained consistently to our manager about the other employees lack of effort, consideration, or just when they’re being straight rude; he always agrees and then just nothing is done. He lets people get away with shit constantly, no actions are made towards fixing anything. The GM has been working here for I think 12 years, I feel at this point he should know how to manage his employees and take necessary steps to prevent the issues. Is this a constant thing with staples as a company or is it just our manager? I don’t fully blame him due to the fact we’re short on hours, new hires, and corporates unrealistic expectations for a high dollar short staffed store but at any other job I’ve had all of these people would’ve been fired instantly. I’m just tired of being taken advantage of for a paycheck I can’t even fully live off of.

2023.06.02 02:41 dreemsequence Would having a poster pretty much touching the plexiglass/acrylic front be a high risk for the poster? Or would there likely be no effect in a temperature regulated setting? 2) Are there any cheap ways to prevent this contact?

I state high risk, since I'm assuming there is a general risk, worst case is that the poster will stick to the plexiglass/acrylic, but does this happen often if the poster is making contact with it? Or is it something that only happens in dire temperature/humidity settings, and I should generally be okay?
I'd assume you'd want the best possible setup for something that you want to maintain in pristine condition, but this is for a print/poster I do kind of like, but don't mind framing it in this way if there's a light risk. If it's almost certain there will be long term damage, I would look for another method, though

2023.06.02 02:38 ATTAKcATHRAK April and May 2023 watchlist

April and May 2023 watchlist
https://preview.redd.it/ggi7sqq33i3b1.jpg?width=6814&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad694365b1b63cab9874ecee5b1a0434c924ac4f
I like that some people have been posting about what they’ve watched each month, and I want to see more of it, so I wrote some blurbs on my recent watchlist. Probably wrote too much.
The Eurocrypt(s) of Christopher Lee: Like many classic horror fans, Christopher Lee is one of my favorite actors. However, I wasn’t especially looking forward to these sets, since I thought they would just be offcuts that Severin couldn’t unload as single releases. I’m pleased to say I was wrong. There are a few misfires among them (Challenge the Devil, Mask of Murder, Secret of the Red Orchid), then some mediocre ones (Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace, Castle of the Living Dead), but finally some really enjoyable films. Crypt of the Vampire and The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (the latter in lurid color) are genuinely creepy and eerie, with looming gothic shadows and ruined castles. Dark Places has a kind of standard “man descends into madness” plot but a fantastic cast including Lee, Joan Collins, Herbert Lom, and Robert Hardy. Murder Story really surprised me! It features a couple of teenagers who befriend Lee (as a writer) and uncover a vast conspiracy while doing research for a novel. The dynamic between Lee and the kids is fun, and although the plot doesn’t really come together, the characters are strong enough to carry it. Finally, Dracula and Son, which I was truly dreading - a French comedy about Dracula and his rebellious kid’s wacky hijinks, with that cover (https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71yHrbovNIL._RI_.jpg)? But it turned out to be very enjoyable, not quite laugh-out-loud funny, but quirky and charming. Again, the characters make it.
Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection: What’s to say about this one? Adamson’s approach to making films (if you make a stinker, reshoot, recut, and rerelease until you like it) and his entire life (murdered and buried under his floor by a live-in contractor who seemed to be assuming his identity) are fascinating. Even when he makes a kids’ movie it’s bizarre, idiosyncratic, and mesmerizing. Al did it all - sci-fi zombie mashups, go-go crime capers, blaxsploitation, sexsploitation, historical sexploitation, regular exploitation, borderline pornos, sci-fi sex musical epics, rape-and-revenge, stupid comedies, kung fu, teen movies, family movies, fantasies, and more I’m probably forgetting. To anyone who has the cash on hand to get a copy now that it’s OOP, please do and don’t blame me if you hate it. You’ll probably make your money back if you sell. Favorites of mine include Psycho a Go-Go, Angels’ Wild Women, Dracula vs. Frankenstein (which I remember renting from Blockbuster at maybe 8 years of age), The Dynamite Brothers, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Black Samurai, Cinderella 2000, and Nurse Sherri. Also be sure to check out the documentary that comes with it. It’s film school in a box!
Bill Rebane: This filmography was something of a disappointment coming off the Al Adamson set. If you’re going to confine all your characters to a very limited location where nothing happens, you’d better make sure you have an interesting script. And none of these do. Also pretty disappointed in the image quality of the box set. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that The Giant Spider Invasion (the only Rebane film I have not part of the box) was the highest quality and the rest just happened to have no better source materials available, but I don’t know. The Giant Spider Invasion was also the best of his movies that I’ve seen, because it seemed to be the most passionate (and had that badass actual giant spider model). The documentary on the Arrow set was not great either. Made during the height of the pandemic, everyone was on Zoom and Rebane himself was only in it for about 5 seconds. However, it led me to his Twitter (https://twitter.com/billrebane?lang=en) and website (https://billrebane.com/), which are a trip.
Bloody Terror: The Shocking Cinema of Norman J. Warren, 1976-1987: The last director-centric box set I watched recently, and one I already had some experience with. Satan’s Slave was featured on one of those 50-movie Mill Creek sets that I picked up when I was younger and watched before I should have. Satan’s Slave is genuinely well-made in my opinion, with a creepy setting, plenty of twists and turns, and enough gore to keep me interested. Prey is also awesome, despite being mostly uneventful. It’s very pleasant for being a film about an alien who comes to each to find a new source of food. Then we get to Terror and Inseminoid, both of which are awful, the latter being one of the most boring Alien ripoffs I’ve ever seen. But Warren brings it home with Bloody New Year, which is completely bonkers and a lot of fun.
Night Gallery Season 1: Maybe I was expecting too much from this. The TV movie that acts as a pilot for the series is excellent, perhaps because each segment seems like it could have been a Twilight Zone episode. Most of the rest of the season is… fine? A couple of better stories and a couple of worse ones scattered throughout. At the very least they all have good casts. However, the first segment of the last episode, “They’re Tearing Down Tim Riley’s Bar”, made up for the blahness of the rest of it. It’s one of those quintessential Rod Serling scripts about lost innocence and the nostalgia of youth that really crush me, a lot like the TZ episodes A Stop at Willoughby and Walking Distance. I don’t plan to watch it again soon, yet I can’t speak highly enough about it.
Exorcist II and III: Who’s the real Exorcist II; The Heretic? It’s me. I didn’t think the second movie was nearly as bad as its reputation - especially the sequences in Africa, which I found to be pretty eerie and dreamlike. The story doesn’t make much sense, but that’s OK with me. And here comes the real heretical opinion - the third one is better than the first, which I’ve always appreciated but never been a huge fan of. The Exorcist III has a clinical coldness that draws me to it, and I really enjoyed the relationship (though I wish it was longer) between Kinderman and Father Dyer. I’ve heard about the studio fiddling with the ending for the theatrical cut, but honestly it’s a good thing they did, as the original is incredibly anticlimactic.
Deadly Prey: “Who am I? A little man who's spent 27 years of his life as a cop trying to put big shots like you away. 27 years in the filth and the dirt of the streets, and there ain't no music down there. You watch the people on the streets, killing, raping each other, pumping dope through their veins, while big men like you sit in the fancy penthouses. And yet the poor slobs rot in hell. I know about you. As long as it puts money in your pocket. Today the nobodies who made you rich are gonna win. Die, you son of a bitch.”
Foes: This was a real hidden gem. I stumbled across it on the recommendation page for another movie on RateYourMusic, and the poster immediately fascinated me. I looked up the Blu-ray release and discovered it was out of print. Then only a week later I found a copy at The Archive for a great price and watched it right away. I’m glad I did. It’s perfect late-night viewing, hallucinatory and dreamlike. I’m going to guess the script was probably around 5 pages. If you like movies where nothing really happens and lots of ambience washes over you, seek this out, but be sure to watch the 72-minute director’s cut. The longer studio-assembled version is awful.
Death Wishes: The first one is something of a classic, and it’s easy to see why it resonated with audiences as crime exploded in the 70s. It tries to play a ridiculous premise and execution as straight as possible, which hurts, especially in comparison to the Cannon-produced sequels and ripoffs that followed. Vigilantism and capital punishment without trial are heavy subjects, and Bronson, who can’t express convincing emotion, is not a good fit. I didn’t dislike the first one since I love all movies about 70s NYC, but it wasn’t great. The second one is a rehash with an updated setting and terrible score by Jimmy Page. The third is where it gets great, finally embracing the innate ridiculousness of the premise and taking it to new heights, backed by a great cast and a simple but effective script. Don’t remember the fourth one except it’s an inferior retread of the third.
Serpico: Another 70s NYC crime movie! This one is great. Though never to the magnitude of Frank Serpico, I’ve been stuck in seemingly similar situations before, where you just feel like you can’t talk to anyone about anything, and it sucks. The film is full of beautiful shots of the desolation of the city and this poor outsider who just wants to do a little something to improve it. Highly recommended!
Food of the Gods / Frogs / Empire of the Ants / Jaws of Satan: Here we have three classic 70s nature-gone-wild films, plus Jaws of Satan, which is from the 80s so has a slightly different feel. There’s something I really like about these kinds of movies, in all their static, flat, stilted glory. Maybe it’s because they’re kind of a revival of the monster movies of the 50s I enjoy so much. I’m probably not making a good case for them, but they’re comfort food for me, and I know one of you will understand! Others that have the same energy include The Incredible Melting Man, Night of the Lepus, The Devil’s Rain, and Kingdom of the Spiders.

Hello. I am trying to create an instruction manual . It is 12 pages and I am trying to figure out how to get the program to set it up to where I can have page 1 and 12 pm the same side of the same page and then 2 and 11 on the same side etc so when I print it I can stack the pages, fold in half and staple together. when I had access to publisher it did this automatically, does this program as well?
