2023.06.02 17:00 brewerbrian Rome FCO Car rental advice
I’m an American taking a whirlwind trip. I need a car for 4 days. I’m arriving at FCO, but when I am done with the car I will be near Piazza Venezia. I’d like to drop it off at soon as I check in at the hotel near the piazza.
Want to book today or tomorrow and I am looking for advice.

2023.06.02 16:55 endersgame69 Adopted By Humans VII C11
It’s the little things of that sort that made life on Earth…life. I swear, if I weren’t keeping my journal of observations, I would completely forget that I was still enrolled in a doctoral program gaining what might potentially be one of the most important degrees in the galaxy.
I’d very much… what the humans say ‘gone native’. Which is the whole point of studying like this, to immerse yourself in a people and learn to appreciate their ways on their terms.
I just never expected when I began that it would be… something more, something so much more, to me or to so many others. But now here I was… and before I go into the days after Michael’s return, I hope you’ll forgive me for a little self indulgence… trust me, it will make the near future far clearer.
By this point, even though I’d only been on Earth for about ten percent of my intended time, by now my degree was going to be a given. I could have returned to University now, with just the work I’d done thus far, presented my findings, and gotten my degree to become ‘Doctor Bailey Walker’ and been done with it… if the rules allowed for that kind of thing.
Because I’d gotten into the various…shenanigans, that I did, because I’d been so heavily involved in so many important events in one way or another from the day of the battle of Waterland Park…as it was so ridiculously and melodramatically called to this day, (much to both my and Fauve’s annoyance), all the way up to the present, I was in a unique position.
I had ties to the highest levels of both governments through two ambassadors, and ties to the leaders of commerce and industry thanks to controlling one of the largest gambling and sporting enterprises on the planet…both of which by dint of my ties to xenomedia expansion in the Barnum Cooperative, meant I was building ties to other planetary governments.
In short… If I didn’t know the right person, I probably lived with one who did. William’s control over my space station project and the display of human engineering was drawing attention from potential allied worlds, while the Methuselah Initiative his wife was a leading researcher for was drawing global attention as the first gentle strides proceeded.
Incidentally… My big sister was on excellent terms with Rebecca Walker and had put her in touch with the D.S.A. the Dlamias Science Academy, where our finest genetic researchers worked… given that Bau was nominally a fugitive, I can only imagine she did this surreptitiously. But once the chain was forged, further cooperation was inevitable.
My people seem to be unable to help ourselves when it comes to humans, if we’re not man’s best friend five years from now, I’ll eat my hat. And if I do not have a hat, first I will buy one, then I will eat it.
All that is to say in long form that, out of all the students on Earth, and out of all the Dlamisa who were now visiting or residing on Earth, out of all the other aliens who were expressing interest in the rising power…I had stumbled my way into being the best known, best positioned, the absolute wealthiest, and the most intimately connected with all the right people.
So… with all that out of the way, let me continue.
Weeks came and weeks went, and I? I enjoyed them. William and Rebecca returned from their work, the Methuselah Initiative continued to progress and the space station continued to expand while the first vessels were built.
Fauve returned from her trip to Japan and we were up late enjoying coffee while the rest of the house slept.
I’d been apart from my human for longer than usual, but we slipped back into our routine without missing a beat.
It was rich, strong stuff that we drank, something she brought with her from her trip. The light was dim and the house was silent save for the little sizzle of coffee dripping down for our inevitable refills. We still had a relatively modest, ‘middle class’ home. Strange for me to say it that way, since I was saying ‘we’. But they were family, now, and it felt right even if legally I owned none of it.
Some have remarked that it was strange that Fauve still hadn’t moved out, when it was not uncommon for humans to leave their homes as they enter adulthood. But the reality is simple, departure is typically undertaken because of stress, a clash between the adult parent and the adult child and the former wanting to continue to rule the latter, while the latter wants to do things their own way.
But that contesting dynamic did not exist between the Walkers. William and Rebecca didn’t press their daughter to let them control anything, they would offer advice, and she did pay a little ‘rent’ to contribute to household expenses. A nominal sum that was more a symbol of independence than anything else. But she otherwise controlled everything about her own life. As they loved and cared for one another and considered their family to be a singular unit, a ‘team’ such as it were, they saw no need to separate themselves.
I like to think she also didn’t want to move since she’d miss me and I was more or less obligated to maintain a single residence for the next fifty years… but that’s just speculation on my part.
Regardless, here she was and so was I, and we could enjoy the comfort of one another’s presence. We simply sipped our first cups, and savored the moment. And for the first half of the cup, we were silent, just enjoying each moment in our amiable existence.
That was our custom, to just enjoy presence for a little while, it was a chance to gather our thoughts and consider what, if anything, there was to say.
Sometimes there wasn’t, we’d just sit in quiet company until our cups were empty, content that nothing need be said and mutual presence was enough.
It’s funny how much humans can say while saying nothing at all. In a very real way, they may be the most competent communicators in the galaxy.
But… tonight would not be a silent night.
When the coffee maker clicked off on the dim light of the kitchen, Fauve chose to speak. “So I got an offer for a diplomatic job.” She said it as if she were mentioning it might rain… this human of mine is the most unflappable person I’ve ever met…I swear.
My tail started to wag and I took a quick sip before saying, “Tell me about it.” She launched into a full story of touring Japan, first, which was to be expected, and I thoroughly enjoyed the recounting before she got to the part I asked about.
“You know how I’ve been handling all these media deals… and… remember how we spent that year on The Red Spark, during the Silent Civil War?” She asked.
I looked down my snout at her. “Tell me that’s rhetorical.”
She cracked a smile, “Well, one of the guys I used to eat lunch with was appointed to the Department of Interplanetary Relations. He was in New Kyoto for a conference on Interplanetary Tech… forget that, it’s boring,” she waved a dismissive hand and went on, “Anyway we were at the same hotel on the day I closed a deal for distributing your league broadcasts…” she paused and tilted her head, “Did you know that the Leonids have a reputation for stubbornness?” She asked.
I nodded. “Worse than ours.” I agreed, and it was no exaggeration. On Dlamias we said that you could convince a mountain to move before you could convince a Leonid to do so.
“They’re not so bad, I just had to keep reframing things until I found what worked, but we got a deal. So I told Marcus about it, and he said he needed someone like me on his team.” She should have smiled, but she didn’t.
“What?” I asked.
“Bailey, listen…”. Fauve’s voice became grave, “Marcus had a few more than he meant to and he let something slip… the Praeda species are a lot more afraid than anyone thinks. If what he told me is true, media relations will be the least of my concerns… a real war is a very clear possibility.”
“Shouldn’t you have led with that?” It was a stupid thing to ask, but still…
She sat up straight, “It wouldn’t be more or less likely, based on where I put it in conversation, and this way you heard good things first. if I waited, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy those properly.”
It was as absurd as it was practical.
“So then the job is…?” I prompted.
“There’s going to be an attempt at diplomacy first. The Rogue World is a long way off, and everybody is going to start gearing up for war, but in that span of time we have a shot at deescalation.” She looked at me for a very long moment.
“I’ll talk to my world’s ambassador. He won’t be happy that word slipped out, even to a reliable resource. Maybe we can create a joint envoy?” It was a tentative thought. More likely it would set the Rapax class species on edge if it looked like we were negotiating a separate peace…
I could see the wheels spinning in her mind when she said… “Maybe suggest we think bigger… anyone left out might feel like a target.”
She wasn’t wrong. “I’ll reach out to him in the morning. In the meantime… one more cup?” I asked.
She handed me hers as I stood, “Yes, please.”

2023.06.02 16:40 asrea_ Should I got to an event despite my mother telling me not to go...
Basic information about me is I am 19 years old, a girl, and a graduating senior high school from the Philippines. So first of all the event I am going to is a Cosplay/Gaming Convention called ConQuest. My friends and I have been planning this since the start of the year. We purchased a ticket in March, and already planned to book a hotel or Airbnb so we would not commute with all of our belongings, and to make our lives easier.
As months pass by fast, I told my mother at April or May (I cannot remember, but I know I told her) that me and my friends would go to an event in June. I also told her that my friend bought the ticket for me for free. I also told her the location. (The location was in Manila in SM Mall of Asia. It's an hour's drive away from my home.) So tomorrow is the day that we are going to the Airbnb we booked. My friend's parents are going to drive us there, and they would also drive us back home.
I told my Mother, just a moment ago, that tomorrow would be the day we would go to SM MOA and that we are going to be there in our Airbnb until Monday. She got furious. She thought that we would just go there and come back home after. She did not know that we would be there until Monday. So I begged her to let me go to the event. I also fucking cried, cause I can't help it. She told me I always go out. Yes, I always go out because those are school-related things. I only go out when we have group works that we needed to do that is outside the school. Unlike my other colleague and friends, I always let her know where I would be going. I would always tell her what we would do, because I do not want her to lose her trust on me. I want her to trust me, and I also wanted her to understand me at the same time. I was crying hysterically at her. Letting her know that I want to go. I need her to let me go, because I've done everything for her. She told me to go to my father, if I would not follow her words. My father was telling my mother that I am already 19, and nearing in college. He was telling her why won't she let me go to things/events like this. He was saying that this was normal, that he also did this kinds of events when he was a teenager. They were shouting and stuff, but my mother's words were the loudest in my ears. After that I go straight to my room, and thought to myself, should I still go to that event, and angered my mother after, or should I just stay here again.
Im sorry for the bad english TT. I just needed to let this out, and get some advice about my mother. This was not the first time she did not let me go. But I understand the first time. I was also sick at that time. But right now, I'm fully fine. I told her a month before the event already because i knew that there will be a possibility that she wouldn't let me...and here I am. I am already old enough, so why wouldn't she let me. I am missing a lot in my teenage life.

2023.06.02 16:32 MidnightSpeeder 40 for Jelle’s 40
40 moments for Jelle’s 40th - The MVP (500m race): Comet’s original race in the 500m that put JMR on the map
- Dawn of a new era (ML16 Balancing): The one that started it all, Marble League 2016 kicks off with 16 teams making their debut in the very first event, Balancing. The Rojo Rollers would claim the first gold.
- The Final Four (ML16 Hurdles): In an unbelievable twist of fate, the top 4 teams were the final four teams in Hurdles to decide the title. In perhaps the greatest finish in Marble history, Speedy from the Savage Speeders defeated Yellup from Mellow Yellow to win the inaugural Marble League
- Momo Oh no (ML17 Collision): Perhaps one of the best known moments, Momomomo collides with a spinner and get sent straight to Wispy losing a chip in the process. Momomomo would sit out the remainder of the ML while Mimo would sub in getting a bronze at High Jump.
- Foreshadowing? (ML17 Underwater Race): Wospy & Kinnowin having back to back battles in the underwater race, the first having Kinnowin setting a record, the second having Wospy steal the gold for the Midnight Wisps.
- OOOOOO (ML17 Sand Rally): A two team battle between the fan favorite O’rangers and the defending champs Savage Speeders. With the Speeders knocked out in their heat, the O’rangers needed a podium finish in the final to win the title. They would get it with a silver after a late charge from Starry clinched their second gold.
- As close as possible (SMR17 R5): The closest finish in a sand race saw Quicksilver defeat Nemo by 0.01 second in a photo for the ages.
- A controversial finale (SMR17 Final): The last race saw double points amongst a longer track. Season leader Quicksilver DNF’d and Dragon’s Egg runner up finish to H2 Blue with the double points gives them the title.
- Ice Cold (ML18 E1 Ice Dash): The 2018 ML was a winter edition and the ice Dash kicked it off. Sea from the Oceanics secured the gold in a tight final.
- For Momomo & Momomomo (ML18 E7 Snow Rally): A late push from Momo in the Snow Rally gives them one of the most memorable golds in Marble history after injuries to two members resulted in Team Momo merging with Team Primary, this medal was the first following the merger.
- How? (ML18 E8 Snowboard Cross): Sublime from the Limers of all teams makes a rally to secure gold. To date, it remains the Limers only gold medal, a team most commonly associated with trash.
- An event for the ages (ML18 Ice Hockey): A personal favorite, Ice Hockey was a bloodbath that saw all marbles in action with all the atmosphere of real hockey. Midnight Wisps would defeat the Minty Maniacs in the final.
- The Midnight Miracle (ML18 Sand Mogul): Ten teams had a chance to win the title coming in. Wispy from the Midnight Wisps would prove to be the Killing Moon and complete the comeback started from the prior event to defeat Whizzy from the Savage Speeders in the final and win the title by one point, the smallest margin to win the title in Marble history.
- A Marble First (ML19 Funnels): The Speeders won the prior event in the Underwater Race, but combining that with Rapidly winning the funnels made the Savage Speeders the first team to win two golds to start a ML.
- Records Falling (ML19 Balancing): A Marble League record was broken three different time in this event, first by the Crazy Cat’s Eyes, then the Thunderbolts, and then once again by the Hazers. These three would be the podium.
- Summer Showdown (ML19 Biathlon): Hop defeats Bonbon in one of the closest finishes in Marble League history.
- A Dirty Comeback (ML19 Dirt Race): Pinky Toe comes out of nowhere in the final race to win the Dirt Race for the Pinkies first ever gold, the event was also notable for the insane number of DNFs.
- A Robust Coronation (ML19 Sand Rally): Razzy from the Raspberry Racers did enough to secure the record breaking Marble League season with 216 points and 8 medals, both which stand to this day, by getting bronze to win ML19. The event also saw the Oceanics fans riot with signs saying Noceanics after their dreadful host campaign.
- A blowout to remember (SMR19 R5): Red Number 3 being the defending champion would take the lead and never look back, winning by a record 8.07 seconds for the sand rally.
- A New Direction (M1S1 Savage Speedway): Marbula One launches and begins with a photo finish between Starry from Team Galactic defeating Hazy from the Hazers.
- Rivalry Renewed (M1S1 Momotorway): Balls of Chaos and Team Primary rivalry hits a new high after Clutter holds off Prim at the very end to secure the first wire to wire win.
- Savage Star (M1S1 Midnight Bay): Needing a win, and some help, Speedy from the Savage Speeders would come back in the race to secure gold and with a poor showing from Hazy, made the Savage Speeders M1 Champions. Speedy would be named MVM.
- John Oliver sponsors ML20: During the Covid lockdown, sports all over the world shut down. John Oliver saw the opportunity to give fans something to watch and sponsors all of ML20 and donates winnings to food banks. The sponsorship saw an influx of fans.
- A Minty Comeback (ML20 Funnels): Minty Drizzel was the first marble to enter the final funnel, they would also be the last marble to leave it giving the Minty Maniacs a stunning victory and their second gold in three events.
- The Reserve (ML20 Hurdles): Razzy sets a record twice (which later got broken by Yellow Eye) but proceeds to get injured at the end of the semis. The Raspberry Racers sub in Ruzzy to go in the final and pulls a massive upset to get gold.
- Out of the Fog (ML20 Triathlon): The event was one of the best, starting with Momo rallying on Pulsar to advance to the final. That was topped by Foggy’s massive rally in the water for gold.
- Redemption (ML20 Sand Moguls): The Oceanics end a 27 event drought by getting gold in the Sand Moguls, winning every round.
- The Miracle in the Waves (ML20 Aquathlon): Although the Midnjght Wisps defeating the Savage Speeders in a photo final was fun, it was nothing compared to the Oceanics rallying on the O’rangers to stun them. It was the start of a massive downfall that saw the O’rangers blow a 35 point lead with three events to go and eventually leading to the Savage Speeders second Marble League title.
- Yellup is Gone (M1S2 Aquathlon): Yellup would fall off the track altogether, providing one of the best Greg Woods lines.
- Red Eye ascends (M1S2 Savage Speedway): Really, the entirety of CCE’s S2 could be an entry but it’s hard to ignore a marble making a historic effort to win the title with a gold by over eight seconds while also securing pole and FL points. It ended up being one of five golds for CCE that season en route to a historic title.
- Battle of Champions (SMR S5 R9): A short race featuring two former champions in Dragon’s Egg and Red Number 3 go head to head with Dragon’s Egg winning by 0.02 seconds.
- Four Felynia (ML21 Sprint): The record would fall a whopping four times, the last of them being by Green Eye winning gold for the hometown Crazy Cat’s Eyes
- Here Come the Speeders (ML21 Relay): The Speeders dominate relay, having won it five times. This one was perhaps their best, performing an incredible comeback in the final that saw Greg’s line come to life.
- A mob for the podium (ML21 Sand Rally): Blue Eye would hold off a large ground of marbles trying to get on the podium. Alpine and Shimmer would come out of that group with medals.
- A Race of All Time (ML21 Marblocross): ML21 was the best tournament, one that saw 11 teams having a chance to win the Marble League. Implications changed nearly every lap of the whole race and while Minty Fresh won the race, it was Yellup and Mellow Yellow who would come out victorious by getting bronze and securing the title.
- Solidifying a legacy (M1S3 Mellow Meadows): Red Eye would complete a comeback in the final lap by jumping the bumpers over Clutter marking the first successful last lap overtake to win a race.
- One Lap Away (M1S3 Mirage Meowtain): Easily the two best teams were the O’rangers & Crazy Cat’s Eyes in S3. The final lap saw Royal pass Red Eye at the start of the lap to steal the title from CCE and hand it to the O’rangers. Had the race been one lap shorter, CCE wins instead.
- Four in a row (ML22 Sand Rally): Before 2022 the Shining Swarm were known as the ? team being forgettable. This stretch changed that by winning four straight medals in a row, never done before in a single Marble League. The latter saw them hold off Aryp and Bonbon in the SAND. The Shining Swarm would climb from last at one point to 12th before the event stretch began all the way to 2nd at the end.
- Pinkies defy expectations (ML22 Elimination Race): 2022 cant be written without the surprising domination of the Pinkies. They would win seven medals and secure the title in this event once Galac5th happened. The 13 point margin is the largest in ML history and the unlikely story considering they were dead last in 18, 15th in 19, and failed to qualify in 20 & 21.
- Zapped (SMR S6 R2): Silver Bolt charges at the home stretch to rally on Slimer by 0.01 seconds. Slimer however would get the last laugh winning the season.
Happy 40th birthday Jelle!

2023.06.02 16:25 teh_mooses Fleeing rural texas for my own safety
For those of you that don't know me from DA and CA, I'm a transgender woman living in north rural Texas. To say things have become bad here since 2018+ is a understatement. Last night was my third beating, this time resulting in broken fingers from where my car door was closed violently on my hand and a concussion from being kicked and screamed out by the local cleetus and bubba's of the area. I'm married to a wonderful trans man, we've both been on hormone therapy for over four years (at least that's one thing in this crazy world that's affordable!)
My mistake, I went out after dark, without my husband, to pick up a take out order of fast food. I guess I should know better and never leave the house or something :( The first two beatings mostly ruined me. The PTSD is out of hand, I have shitty insurance but at least they cover therapy and generic medication, and I've been using that to it's fullest.
I've had my ear literally cut nearly off with a knife, multiple broken ribs, local businesses refusing to service me but of course never explaining why, local landlords raising my rent refusing to help when anything is broken, cops that laugh at me and promise they will 'look into things' after each beating and of course, they do nothing and make snide remarks about how it's my fault and I should carry a gun (ewww.)I realized last night I just can't do this anymore. It's unsafe unless I hide in my place 24/7 or take my husband with me everywhere I go, and even then it's dicey.
I am getting the fuck out, by any means needed.I swallowed a lot of pride and created a fundraiser for a private friends group I am in, and - damn, 6% met in the FIRST DAY. I cried a lot, that's just so amazing. I'm skipping on any luxury including simple things like nicotine for my vape thingie and like 5$ in alcohol a day to keep the nightmares and shaking at bay.
I have two very close friends in MI who are more than happy to give me a safe landing pad and take me in for a few weeks while I get things settled in a new and more tolerant and safe place. I cannot put them in a situation where after I get there, a month later, I cannot afford to start my life over. I need enough for first and last month rent + deposit of a cute little apartment I found, rental of a large u-haul to get me there, a couple quality cat crates for moving them safely and with love, food and hotel for 2-3 nights during the long drive, and the ability to start over.
I'm not safe here anymore, and at this rate - I fear this is targeted and it's just a matter of time before I end up in a ditch or hurt so badly that I end up with lifelong physical health issues. It really dings and fucks with my pride to ask, but - if you are in a position to help, or even share with your groups of friends and loved ones - I would be eternally grateful, and of course - once I get settled my #1 goal will be to pay it forward to get someone else out. I have one good thing going for me - I work for myself doing video editing for youtubers and the like, basic server / domain setups, and I can do this from anywhere. I don't make much, but I'll make enough to at least cover the basics when I am out, and my husband will actually have a boat load of options finally and can put his masters degree to use.
Here he could not even get a job at a local fast food place if he wanted, due to also being transgender (female to male). We've both been on hormone therapy for over 4 years (at least that's free, insurance covers it!) We've both just hit the point where it's swallow the pride and ask our communities for some help and crowdsource our GTFO, or risk our lives and stay where while things get worse and worse and more hateful for people like us.If you are considering helping me and need more, you can DM me. I'm happy to provide hospital bills, disturbing pictures of me missing an ear for a day and the nasty recovery of having that put back on (ewww), some broken fingers and awful stuff if you need it :)
Thanks in advance, and special thanks to
zapopi for tell me it's okay.

2023.06.02 15:57 Db9210 Helena Price - I Get Interracial Fucked In My Car By The Beach Hotel!
2023.06.02 15:57 According-Cold-9524 Worth changing hotels based on a few semi-old bed bug reports?
I'm set with a reservation at a hotel near Disneyland. It's convenient, good price, hits all the marks for my trip. Well, I did a quick check on Google reviews and saw several reports of bedbugs. I immediately booked another hotel that is further away, more of a hassle, but does not have any bedbug reports on Google reviews.
I'm conflicted on changing hotels.
My argument for staying:
- Basically, every hotel has had bedbugs at some point. Changing hotels based on a bedbug report is like changing hotels based on reports that it rained on the hotel. Hotels are going to have bedbugs occasionally, randomly, predictably, and uncontrollably. The key is not whether they have bedbugs, but how the react when they do.
- The most recent of the reports was 4/5 months back. Presumably, they've taken measures already. In a way, a hotel that's dealt with the issue months ago may be on a higher level of vigilance.
- There's some inherent risk in travel. I can't avoid that. I'm letting fear push me to make bad decisions. 1.5k reviews, maybe 5 of which mention bedbugs months ago. That's not a problem, that's the nature of life. If I can't deal with 5/1500 risk, then I shouldn't be travelling.
My argument for changing:
- The reports on Google were "clustered" - i.e. two or three four to five months ago and two or three one year ago. That might suggest an "outbreak" at those points - which makes me wonder if they were doing a poor job of controlling things. If my thought that all hotels get hit, then the ones that are super vigilant nip things in the bud before "clusters" arise.
- This never occurred to me, but how does a hotel - a huge building - reliably get rid of bedbugs? I'd think that it's very much a whack-a-mole situation and that if bedbugs get established and then need to be beaten back. So if they're getting hit, it might be a situation that they're in the middle of trying to handle.
- The rooms in the "hit" hotel are more of a suite - thus harder to clean, I'd think - and the rooms have some less than ideal furnishings in terms of bedbug risk.
Right now, I'm leaning toward changing, if only for peace of mind.
Thoughts?

2023.06.02 15:49 Striking_Trick_9642 Need a reality check
So I’ve been pretty good with hearing about people getting the stomach bugs at work and stuff but now im a little worried. A coworker of mine claimed she had fp from Wendy’s and v*. I wasn’t working with her when this happened, but I relieve her and we both clock in at the same place and have to open a door to get through. I also touched her time punch card by accident, I washed my hands after but when I clocked out I went straight to my car. I don’t touch my mouth but I do hit my vape which goes near my mouth, and I drove my car without cleaning my stearing wheel. Do you think my car is contaminated and it is now on my vape? I’m at the beach and trying to have a good time….

2023.06.02 15:47 Strawberryprincesss9 Non-busy swimming holes, waterfalls, beaches?
Hi all!
I’m going to Puerto Rico with my husband in February to celebrate my birthday. It will be our first time, and we will be there for a week.
We are avid hikers and love places that are somewhat secluded and off the beaten path. We are looking for non-touristy recommendations for waterfalls, swimming holes, and small beaches with not a lot of people.
We are tempted to stay near Cabo Rojo, but if there are any other recommendations for airbnbs with waterfalls/swimming holes nearby, we are all ears!
We plan to see old San Juan at some point, maybe the bio bays as well. Any other must-see recs would be great too.
Thank you everyone for your time reading this and any input you may have!

2023.06.02 15:46 chop_your_cock_off First trip to Italy - recap report
Just finished my first trip to Italy and what a great experience. Wanted to share my experience here for other first time travelers and some things I would have done differently. The trip was broken up into 3 legs and spread across 12 days - Tuscany (5), Rome (2), and Amalfi (5). I'll include some details of itinerary and travel.
Apologies for a long post, but hopefully someone will get some good info out of this!
To prep for the trip, I used the Duolingo app for about 3 months to try and make sure I knew enough Italian to get by. Of course, the moment my plan touched down all that studying I did flew out of my head and I basically forgot it all! In the end I was able to get by with just greetings, ordering food/drink/cafe and simple hi, how are you type phrases. For reference, my wife did no studying and picked it up right away. Only shock to her was that there was no such thing as iced coffee.
Tuscany
We flew into Milan and rented a car at the airport. Would definitely recommend this because once you are into Tuscany it is hard/expensive to find drivers and Uber is basically non-existent.
Stayed at the Como Castello del Nero hotel. The hotel was beautiful and had everything you could want. Rolling and picturesque hills from every vantage point, a great pool, good fitness facilities and a nice spa. The staff at the hotel were world class as well. The restaurants on property were very nice however quite expensive. We did eat on the property a few times, but I think i preferred my meals off property and in the smallelocal restaurants more. I would have planned more dinners off property if I had to do anything differently here. Favorite meal was at La Capanna del Gallo, a smaller restaurant which was a short drive from our hotel.
For activities we visited a few wineries/vineyards as well as did a bit of hiking. We were a little jet lagged and did spend a bit of time just relaxing and drinking wine by the pool. The winery that absolutely blew me away was the Antinori Vineyard in Bargino . We did the CRU tour which included an in-depth tour of the facilities, tasting of several vintages and then a lunch with wine pairing. Would highly recommend visiting here. One of the mom-and-pop vineyards that we visited and i would also recommend is Il Palagio di Palazzo. Did the CRU tour here as well and was very pleased.
Rome
Used the rental car to travel from Tuscany to Rome, then returned the car near our hotel in Rome.
Stayed at the Baglioni Hotel Regina. Nice enough hotel, but the rooms were a little dated. Technically classified as a 5 star hotel but I probably would have classified it as a 4 star. Still, decent enough stay and staff. Plus for the location as well. We booked this hotel because it was purely in a good location and more of a 'utilitarian' choice - we knew that we weren't going to be spending a lot of time here so the hotel didn't matter all that much.
As we were only in Rome for two days, we really tried to pack in as much as we could. On the day we arrived we spent the afternoon walking around and just taking in the city. We had dinner in the Testaccio neighborhood, which i would highly recommend. We ate at Felice, which was a bit touristy but i think still worth it for some excellent cacio e peppe.
Trevi Fountain - its whatever - cool i guess but absolutely mobbed.
Colosseum - very cool. Did an early morning guided tour which was booked on Viator.
Vatican Museum - Also very cool but a bit long for our taste. Did a 4 hour private/guided tour booked through Context Travel. We were able to get 'behind the ropes' in a lot of places to look at things away from general public which was nice, but its very crowded in the main areas.
If we had to do something different in Rome it would for sure be spacing out activities or just booking a day or two more. All in all, we went to Rome knowing that we would be very busy and very 'touristy' but I think slowing it down a bit would have made this portion of the trip a little nicer. Still, Rome is great and would love to get back.
Amalfi
Took the train from Roma Termini to Naples. Our hotel arranged for a transfer from Naples to the hotel.
Stayed at Borgo Santandrea just outside of Amalfi town. Hands down nicest hotel I have ever even stepped foot inside. Seriously 5 star all the way through with no detail overlooked. One detail I loved is that it smelled amazing in throughout the hotel which actually was a really nice touch. The hotel had an amazing pool and is the only hotel in Amalfi that his its own beach club. The staff were top notch and I think there was a staff-to-guest ratio of like 3:1. The hotel also had a free shuttle that would drop-off/pickup from Amalfi town whenever you needed which was a real life saver in terms of time and money.
For activities we visited Ravello, Amalfi and Positano (sort of) then utilized our hotel's beach club for a few lazy days. Ravello was my favorite of the cities to visit. There were tourists yes, but much fewer than all the other cities. We visited Villa Cimbrone which has a spectacular garden and amazing views. You should go here for a nice cocktail or glass of wine. We went out in Amalfi town for dinner several times and never had a bad meal. We tried to branch off the main square and into some alleyways to find hidden gems, but all in all I would say most of the restaurants were comparable at the $$$ price range on google maps. Finally, we planned to visit Positano but scrapped it at the literal last minute - we rented a boat to take us from our hotel's dock to Positano but as we approached Positano it just appeared overrun by people. Instead we had our boat driver just cruise us around the coast. This ended up being one of my favorite days. The cost was $100/hour so actually pretty reasonable. Beach club at Borgo Santandrea was also a highlight - not crowded at all and the service is great. You can visit the beach club even if you don't stay at the hotel, so I would say its worth it even just for a nice lunch and cocktails. The pizza at the beach club is really good, although a little pricey at roughly 30 euros for a basic pizza.
I don't think I would really change anything about the Amalfi portion of my trip other than trying to extend it!
Just to give everyone an idea on budget, I think we spent roughly $25,000 for two people during the trip of a lifetime.

2023.06.02 15:43 Neuro_88 [FL] Baby Out of Hospital After Hollywood Beach Shooting as Parents Call for Change
2023.06.02 15:40 Dry_Steak_5986 My partner and daughter are on a “family” holiday with her parents but I wasn’t invited. What would you feel/do in this situation?
I (28M) have been in a state of limbo from the day this was brought up. My partner (27F) and our daughter have went away on holiday with my partner’s parents and brother, but left me out. Just for extra information, my partner and I have been together pretty much nine years except for a slight break a couple of years after our daughter was born. Also they are currently on the holiday at the moment.
When this was first brought up, my partner told me that her family was considering going on holiday and our daughter and her were invited to go along too. I knew that we didn’t have the money for such trip especially on such short notice (6 weeks before they were set to fly). Turns out her parents were paying for the full trip and that she will only need to pay for her clothing (even though her parents put towards for both of them), lunch and any excursions or souvenirs they wanted.
My partner had asked me to make sure I get the time off approved with work for the duration of the holiday (which was done but they were funny about it) but it turns out that it was so I was able to look after my partners parent’s dog (Even though my partner knows I don’t like animals). They had discussed every detail of the holiday with me as if I was going to be there and then the point came as I was double checking the booking information with my partner (as she wanted to make sure that it was done correctly), that I found out I wasn’t invited.
I completely understand they couldn’t have afforded to book a holiday for 6 people but if they had just told me, I could have worked something out financially to allow me to be included.
Personally I think my partner should have told me from the very beginning and when she knew I wasn’t invited, she should have declined the invitation. I had asked her how she would have felt if my parents had suggested the same thing but left her out and she responded with “well you wouldn’t be going” which is exactly what I would have done.
I know my partner and my mum haven’t had the best relationship so I know this type of trip would never happen with my family but from my understanding I have always been on good terms with my partner’s family.
My partner has shown some form of guilt relating to me not going on holiday with them but I feel like it has been short lived and when I’ve told her not to discuss “holiday details” with me, she will ask me what’s wrong knowing full well that I’m annoyed that I would be spending 8 out of 12 days of my annual leave allowance by myself, while she and our daughter would be enjoying themselves in a foreign country by a hotel pool, the beach, going on boat trips and having spa days.
I have been trying to be nice about the situation as I don’t want to make my partner feel guilty or not being able to enjoy the holiday, but I really feel like I have been mugged off as everyone from work “knows” I was going on this trip but I’m sitting at my partners parents house watching a dog for free.
What do you think? Thanks
