Oh man… where do I begin.
I grew up poor. Went to the military, got married, had kids. Built a stable life for us. Then I got injured and lost my career. Got out and life has been a roller coaster ever since.
Struggled financially for a while until 2020 when I was back paid 100k in disability benefits. Which I then invested and turned in to 500k. I paid off all my debt and bought a 725k house at 3%interest using the Va home loan.
Continued investing and pretty soon turned that 500k in to 1 mil…. Life was finally amazing. It was everything I dreamed of. I got a taste of not having to worry about every day essentials. Affording to pay bills… etc. I looked towards my kids future.
To top it all off, between my job, disability, and using the GI bill I was making around 14k a month. Completely debt free other then 20k car loan and my home. Built my credit from 480 up to 700 from 2019 to 2021.
Oh man…
Having 1 mil in my brokerage and my success at trading made me think… well hey do wanna spend more time with my family + I have busted my ass for years never really getting to take a break. I wanted my wife to have some time for herself too as she had sacrificed immensely for me. I’ll just quit my job a lightly trade I thought.
This was a mistake. I did fine for a while, but hated withdrawing funds for bills. So I started over leveraging trying to make up for the withdraws. Started taking some losses. Hiding losses from my spouse.
I became obsessed, fixated on the market. Because I was lying to my spouse I became more and more withdrawn… spending less time with her
I somehow spent less time with my family being home all day then I did working full time and being in school full time. Things continued to get worse.
I started drinking more and more to mask my anxiety. I didn’t want to seem “off” so I drank to be normal. Pretty soon the million was down to 200k. I stopped paying the bills. Stopped paying house payments and we had financed 2 new cars. Stopped paying them.
Panic sets in and I can no longer contain it. I’m losing my mind. I tell my wife fearing she will leave me.
She consoles me. Tells me everything is going to be okay. But I am devastated and I can see the pain I have caused her… but I’m still a wreck.
She still had faith in me. I blew up my account on December 23 of 2021. She didn’t know.
I start taking out payday loans. I put our house loan on Covid forbearance. Continuing to spiral. My mental health was a shadow of what it had been. I had worked so hard on it and my recovery was the reason we even bounced back to where we were.
I continued to throw it all away.
I finally told her everything. She’s upset. She cries, throws things. But still… she stays for some reason. She still sees good in me even tho I have been a lying bastard… she calms me and helps me make a plan. She gets me back out in ti the world and I get a job.
Fast forward to this moment. I am 70k behind on my home loan. I owe 80k between our 2 vehicles. I have racked up a bunch of short term loans that have went to collections. I owe money to a few overdrawn bank and brokerage accounts… I have medical debt bc I wasn’t paying copays for my wife and kids appointments. My credit score is back down to 520.
After a year of being jobless I’m back at work in a different city and I drive home on the weekends and I’m back in school using GI bill for income… this going well for now
Until today… through everything I didn’t realize my car insurance lapsed a few months ago… today I was involved in an auto accident (my fault) I hit a parked truck on the side of the street on my way to work this morning. I just didn’t adjust, it was a wider f350… didn’t realize how close I was to it.
I stopped found the guy. My damages come to 3k (I need this vehicle) he filed a claim with his insurance. He gave them my info and he had uninsured motorist coverage. Now I’m afraid I won’t be able to get my policy back as he reported my info to his agency.
To top it all off my marriage is at an all time low, she doesn’t trust me (I don’t blame her).April 1 she’s supposed to completely take over the finances.
I haven’t told her about the insurance/accident yet.
I’m falling apart and idk what to do. I have contemplated suicide (I have a 1mil policy between work and Va and private).
In any case I’m between selling the house and taking the equity to ease us financially. Or file ch 13 and save the house and try to get some stability back for my wife and kids.
This is unbelievable, and has been a nightmare that I saw coming but I just didn’t/couldn’t stop.
I don’t know what to do. I’m so lost. I hate being away from them but I have to work. She’s overwhelmed taking on the burdens of everything ( we have no family help).
Every time I think things are gonna get better I’m reminded of just how big of a peace of shit I am.

2023.03.29 07:41 h0yitsdom Mailman refusing to deliver mail due for nearly a year after moving into house

Bought a house in socal back in May 2022, did change of address and everything the following month. We were receiving mail without fault for about a month before we noticed it was a week of no mail. My wife stopped our mailman leaving our cul-de-sac and he told her that we need to move the mailbox (located next to front door where it was prior to us purchasing house and was never touched) and that we should of got a notice in the mail...he never delivered this. We researched this and could not find a specific policy stating we HAVE to move mailbox (we are renovating and plan to eventually add a fence and relocate mailbox to curb years down the road), we confirmed this by visiting our local post office where the employee confirmed no issues with our mailbox and he would discuss with mailman.
We submit a file for a 'case' and they research it which leads to us getting confirmation from the local post office that we are OK and should be getting mail delivered...weeks go by and no mail...submit case again and next step is them telling us we will get a specific mail delivery person to deliver the mail while they look into this matter. Result is a random mailman delivering mail only to my house sporadically for a few weeks and then mail delivery stops again...
Open another case via USPS website resulting in them 'confirming' that mail is being delivered by my streets normal mailman...completely false. He still has never walked to my door to deliver mail, I am still sporadically receiving bundles of mail at a time from a separate carrier including packages. I now open my 3rd case (This is now October 2022), and demand to speak with the local postmaster (Henry Roberson). I show him pictures of my house listing and current pictures of the house showing the mailbox has never moved, I do not have a dog, there has never been any impeding of the doorway for the mail carrier. He assures me we are correct, and he will absolutely speak with mail carrier to ensure we will be getting our mail delivered the very next day. The next day...no mail...and the next week no mail or packages...despite seeing via Informed Delivery (this entire time from change of address) that mail was to be delivered.
I go back into the post office to speak with the Post Master again and he assures me he spoke with the carrier but says he will ensure the manager of carriers/routes (not sure of specific title) will have someone deliver our mail. Fast forward a few weeks, I am outside in my driveway and I get approached by USPS Federal Investigators, unbeknownst to me I tell them my side of the story and how I have not gotten any mail delivered etc...only for them to say "we are actually here to investigate a threat made to the carrier". Mind you, I have never spoken to the carrier or been within 10 feet of the carrier since I've moved into my house. He claimed I threatened him, only after months of me complaining to the USPS of not getting mail delivered. I provide ring footage and receipts from the day I threatened him to the inspectors, confirming I was nearly 30 minutes away from my house at the time he said I threatened him.
A few more weeks of sporadic mail delivery, I open my 4th case (November 2022), and continue to sporadically receive mail from random carriers throughout the following months. I have continued to have this issue, along with packages being delivered late due to my sporadic delivery schedule. USPS tracking items are continuing to be updated with "Held at customer request", I have received medicine from the VA late, bills within days of due dates.

I am looking for any advice on how to fix this issue, I just want my mail delivered. Today one of my neighbors walked over a piece of my mail that was delivered by the normal carrier to their house...
So far I have:
Spoken with post master several times
Spoken with USPS Postal Inspector
Local Consumer Affairs Office (told me to speak to local congressman??)
Sent letter to local congressman
Still not getting mail delivered as scheduled to my home coming up on nearly a year...
All internet research says "postmaster can handle it" but that has absolutely not been the case.

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc. Always mention working safely.

Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books, you are a qualified applicant.

MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.

Professor Hik-von.
Let me provide some background. I am a University Professor of Music currently working for the Federation College of Music on Rolden, not far from the borders of the Federation. As a T’len, my species has excellent hearing and sight, but most of all, we have a drive to learn.
I had planned a short five-cycle trip to enjoy some of the beauty of a planet the humans call Earth. I landed at the Münster Spaceport early in the day, just before their local star started to rise over the horizon (the Humans call the star “Sol”). Being a T’len, my eyes automatically adjusted to the increasing light.
I followed the other people from many different worlds, all moving to what I assumed was the “baggage claim”. My thoughts were confirmed when I saw the signs above showing Galactic Standard that it was indeed the case. From the carousel indicating the ship I was just on, I grabbed my single bag and followed the signs to a door marked “Ground Transportation”. “These humans are quite organized…” I thought to myself.
I headed to the curb, and within seconds, a bright yellow taxi pulled in front of me. I opened the door and carefully slid in, watching that my long tail wouldn’t get clipped in the automatic door. I noticed that the taxi was completely automated. A voice asked in a very pleasant tone in my native T’len language, “Please state your desired destination?”
“Hotel Münster, please…” I replied back in T’len. I have to say, for a new member of the Federation, these humans seemed very pleasant. The taxi moved carefully through the streets, and within minutes, I was in front of the hotel.
The Hotel Münster is charming. It has grand exterior, with classic architectural features such as ornate stonework, wrought iron balconies, and tall arched windows. The entrance is marked by a large wooden door with intricate carvings, flanked by antique lanterns. The lobby features high ceilings, chandeliers, and a grand staircase leading to the upper floors. The furniture and decor were what the humans called a classic or antique style, with plush velvet armchairs, gilded mirrors, and oil paintings on the walls. The hotel offered modern amenities such as Internet and air conditioning while preserving its historical character.
I was later told of the history of this city, but that is for another paper.
After I had checked in and was shown to my room, I had an urge to go “adventuring” through the hamlet.
The small German town of Münster was bustling with activity as I stepped out of my hotel and onto the cobblestone streets. As a T’len from a distant planet, I was used to experiencing new and strange things, but this quaint town held a particular charm that I couldn't resist. I decided to explore the local plaza, where I stumbled upon a small coffee shop.
I ordered a hot beverage and took a seat at a table outside, watching as people went about their daily routines. It wasn't long before I noticed a man dressed in black and white clothing (I was later told that it was called a “tuxedo” and was formal clothing), holding a large piece of wood with what looked like wires connected at both the top and bottom.
I pointed my translator to it, and it was identified as a “double bass,” a traditional stringed instrument played by pulling a bow across the strings with one hand and placing the fingers of the other hand on the strings to produce vibrations that would vibrate inside the hollow wood cavity and produce sound. He placed a black hat on the ground and stood in silence.
I sat and sipped the hot coffee and sat back just to watch the crowd for a moment when a small human child came up to me and in a quiet voice said, “kitty.” I looked at my translator and started to chuckle.
Let me explain. A "kitty" is a small domesticated animal native to this planet. It seems that my orange and brown fur, along with my eyes, ears, and tail, make me look like an over sized cat. However, unlike that little animal, I am much bigger and bipedal, and millennias ago, our claws faded into stubs that were closer to knobs protruding at the end of our fingers. They look very close to Human nail, but tended to be black in color.
"I'm sorry, little human, but I am not a kitty, I am a T'len," I politely explained, bending closer to her. "My name is Hik-von. What is your name?" I smiled, emulating what I had seen other humans do.
She smiled up at me with wide eyes and replied with great joy, "Helen, I'm six years old."
“Pleased to meet you”, I asked, "Is your family nearby?"
She pointed to the table in front of me, and I saw two humans sitting there watching us. Helen then asked, "Can I touch your tail?"
Most T'lens would never allow anyone to invade their space or touch them, but that was not me. I slowly brought my tail up and gently laid it on her shoulders. She giggled with delight as my fur touched her neck. Her happiness was intoxicating, and I smiled as she stroked the soft fur. "It's so soft," Helen giggled again and ran to tell her parents, who waved at me and nodded their thanks.
Helen asked her parents for a coin and ran over to the man with the double bass and dropped it in his hat. He smiled at her and began playing music that I had never heard before. The music was beautiful, with soaring melodies and intricate harmonies that spoke to my soul.
I looked at my translator, which displayed the title of the piece the human was playing: "Ode to Joy" by Ludwig van Beethoven. The music was unfamiliar to me, but I couldn't help but feel moved by it.
The man in the tux continued on. Other performers joined him. This started slowly at first, one or two adding their own instruments to the performance. Some with small instruments that looked like the double bass but were smaller and higher pitched. Some brought metal instruments that they blew into. Soon, it was a mixture of both beauty and harmony. More people seemed to appear from everywhere, and they all seemed to add their instruments to the mix. The music began to build, growing louder and more complex with each passing moment.
I watched in awe as the performers worked together, creating a beautiful and complex tapestry of sound. The music was so powerful that I could feel it reverberating through my body, filling me with a sense of joy and awe. The performers continued to play, their music echoing through the plaza and drawing in more and more people. Soon, a crowd had gathered, and I found myself swept up in the energy and excitement of the moment.
The music played on. The notes were carried on the breeze, mixing with the sounds of the town and creating a symphony of its own.
The lyrics of the song spoke of brotherhood and joy, of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. They were beautiful, and I found myself quoting them to myself over and over again.
The voices sang, "Durch des Liedes Macht veredelt, wahrhaftig zu sein, was ist" ("Through the power of song, ennobled, to be truly what one is"), and I felt a deep sense of connection to the humans around me. The music continued to build, reaching a crescendo that filled the plaza with its beauty.
The voices then sang, "Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!" ("Joy, beautiful spark of divinity, Daughter of Elysium, We enter, drunk with fire, Heavenly One, your sanctuary!"), and I was in awe at the power of their words.
As the music came to a close, the performers and the audience erupted into cheers and applause. It was a moment of pure joy and beauty, a testament to the power of music to unite people from all walks of life and worlds. The sun began to set, and the group of musicians began to disperse, each one nodding to the other in appreciation. Lost in thought, I sat there for a moment, reflecting on how this trip had been more than just a chance to experience a new world. It had been an opportunity to connect with others in a way that I had never thought possible.
I finished my coffee and headed back to the hotel, my mind racing with new ideas and thoughts. I knew I would never forget this day, this moment of pure joy and beauty that had been shared by so many different beings.
That night, as I lay in bed, listening to the soft hum of the city outside, I couldn't help but smile. Somewhere in the universe, there was a small planet called Earth, filled with wonder and beauty beyond anything I had ever known. And for that, I was grateful.

2023.03.28 22:52 Commercial-Mobile-69 Upper 20s SINK looking to peace out of Baltimore

Well, y'all, here I am again, looking to move. Currently live in Northeast Baltimore, where I was born and raised. And, well, almost every stereotype you hear is true. I've had neighbors carjacked and run over by their own cars. My own house and car have been broken in to numerous times, hostile neighbors, drug paraphernalia on every corner. Kinda over it and just want to be relatively safe when on my own street.
I've also lived on the opposite end of the spectrum: a super small town in Virginia, population a little over 300. Got called a "come here" first time I ventured out to a restaurant in town and had to go to a laundromat because there were no washedryer hookups in the rental house LOL. Then I lived in Fredericksburg, VA, kind of a happy medium between Baltimore and middle of nowhere Virginia.
I don't make a ton of money, about $62,000 a year, fully remote job. Maryland is expensive overall, Baltimore is about 11% above the average COL. It's just me and my dog so I might start out renting somewhere until I get my bearings. Definitely want to get a yard for my pup eventually, and I can't afford that on a single income in the safer areas of Baltimore, like Fells Point, Fed Hill, or Hampden. Also debating going back to school online for a career change. That industry tends to be more lucrative, income wise, but that will take a couple years. So my money stretching father would be a huge bonus.
Things I like:
  1. For its flaws, I like that you can drive 20-30 minutes away from Baltimore and be in the country or at a giant park. I like hiking/walking trails on the weekends for at least a couple miles each time. Related, I like the historic areas and parks in Baltimore! We have two National Parks here and lots of history. Also something I liked about Fredericksburg. I'm a huge history nerd and, like stated earlier, love exploring parks and trails with my dog.
  2. Definitely want to be in/near a population center with Targets and such. I did NOT like being 30-45+ minutes away from the nearest hospital, Target, Walmart, any retail of any kind in random VA.
  3. Food. Love eating and drinking good stuff out and about.
Things that are not a concern:
  1. Schools. I don't want or plan on having kids so no worries on school districts or anything.
  2. Drivability. You have to drive here (there is a bus, but it's unreliable and unsafe) and that's kind of what I'm used to. Walking to a cafe or brewery would be nice, but not a dealbreaker.
Things I don't like:
  1. Snow... Maryland is as far north as I'd go. I DO NOT like super cold or super snowy places.
  2. Crime, obviously. Not naive enough to think all places are peachy keen 24/7, but I'd like a little more peace of mind than I have here in Baltimore.
