2023.06.02 15:25 HonestBat I just crossed my first 1cr milestone

I crossed my first 1cr milestone yesterday; I was awaiting my May salary credit with the same excitement (if not more) as my first paycheck.
Background: 27M from a middle-class, education-first focussed family (father was a government servant, moved throughout the country during transfers, mum settled in the city so our education wasn't disrupted). Finally, their sacrifices paid off; I got into one of the top-ranked institutes and started working right after college, switching once in between.
Current distribution of assets:
In the above calculations, I'm yet to consider any inheritance (insignificant) or ESOPs that I have vested from my employer (since it's paper money).
Investment strategy: Experimented with active mutual funds initially but switched to passive investing after exposure to the idea. I started with some money for actively picking stocks that I liked (domestic market only) and did well (~40% returns), which became a portfolio of 17L. I understand that I do not have time to track the markets; hence most of my savings go into index funds and stocks whenever I feel like shopping (mostly existing ones I've researched already). Apart from that, I already have sorted out term insurance as well as health insurance for me and my family.
Major expenditures ahead:
  1. Marriage with my long-term girlfriend.
  2. I wanted to take my family on our first international vacation for a long time, will do that now.
  3. I'm contemplating pursuing higher education outside India as well.
Personal preference: Retiring early was never my goal; it was rather financial independence behind building a corpus. The mental peace of not worrying about the financial implications even if I leave work is something I was after. I don't have any loans at the moment, nor do I plan to buy a home until I finally wish to settle this would allow me to move whenever and wherever I find a better opportunity. Also, this corpus could allow me to take calculated risks (either starting a business on my own or joining someone else's early stage) if I find something interesting.
I couldn't tell anyone about this milestone; I quietly celebrated with myself when I saw the "salary credited" notification on my phone. I have lurked here long enough, reading about the experiences of other folks who've already FI/REed; I thought I could, at least share my journey with you guys.

How to find work abroad for couples without language - where to look?
Working abroad = separation from a loved one
Separation from a loved one is one of the main disadvantages of working abroad that people who choose this type of employment complain about. This is an inconvenience that you can effectively combat. The solution is to decide together to go and work for couples. Being employed by the same company is not easy, but it is possible and it does not expose the relationship to weeks of separation.
Where can I find dedicated jobs for couples?

https://preview.redd.it/aankpqt8pl3b1.jpg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f909a979caa8adedbbb75e1a55db7e02c8e4474e
Looking for jobs abroad for couples is possible through:
Online job portals - it is worth starting by browsing popular job portals such as Indeed, Gowork. Job search engines allow you to specify your exact requirements and preferences, e.g. in terms of location, salary level, required qualifications and foreign languages. A trip to work abroad must be properly planned with an honest employer.
Employment agencies - recruitment agencies specialising in work abroad often offer support in finding work for couples. These companies have a lot of experience in recruiting workers from abroad and are able to offer numerous attractive job offers that are tailored to aptitude and skills, as well as assistance with the formalities of departure. The employment office guarantees a legal and safe trip abroad, which avoids many unpleasant problems. The recruitment process is very simple as all the formalities are handled by the staff of the employment agency. The couple looking for work does not have to worry about issues related to travel, contract, insurance or accommodation.
Social networks - many companies and organisations look for employees through social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. It is worth joining groups or forums dedicated to working abroad, where you can share information and meet people with similar interests.
Job fairs - attending a job fair is a great opportunity to find out about job opportunities abroad. Many companies recruit employees directly at the fair and arrange on-site interviews. Sometimes they offer employees an allotment with their family or partner.
Personal contacts with people who are already working abroad - it is worth taking advantage of opportunities with friends or family. You may find that someone close to you is working abroad, or knows someone who can help you find work, or has heard of opportunities for couples to work abroad.
When looking for work abroad for couples, use a variety of information sources and be open to different opportunities and ways of employment. Among the safest ways to do this is through a proven employment agency, which will provide a safe, fair and yet simple way of employment.
In which industries is it possible to work for couples abroad?
The most popular jobs for couples abroad are in manufacturing. This is due to the variety of duties in this type of company, i.e. product packaging, production line operation, warehouse work, logistical work. The variety of activities in the production and warehouse industry creates opportunities for attractive job offers for couples.
Seasonal jobs for couples abroad are also popular. Most often, these are in the agricultural industries, which offer work in fruit and vegetable harvesting, work in greenhouses. It is important to remember that these are seasonal, short-term jobs, most often offered during holidays.
Increasingly, couples who are specialists in a particular field are choosing to work abroad: medicine, IT workers, engineers. For them, allocation packages are often offered with the whole family, the partner. Work and incentive allowances are then provided, ensuring faster acclimatisation in the new country for the couple deciding to go on such a trip.
Jobs abroad for couples without language skills
Couples who would like to go abroad to work are worried that they won't be able to find a job without knowing the language. Is there anything to worry about? No, because employers in certain industries such as manufacturing, warehouse work, transport and agriculture are more willing to take on couples. Such workers can be more motivated and productive.
Work for couples without language is possible in jobs where there is no or minimal need to communicate while performing the work. This therefore applies to independent work, following initial training in the use of equipment or machinery.
The decision to go to work abroad
Working for couples abroad can be an interesting option for people who want to travel and develop their careers at the same time. Here are some tips that can help couples make the decision and prepare for working abroad:
Identify your goals
Before working abroad, it is worth considering what goals you want to achieve. Is it about gaining new work experience or learning about a different culture and personal development? It is worth discussing these issues and setting common goals to make working abroad mutually rewarding.
Looking for job opportunities
For couples looking for work abroad, we recommend looking for offers that offer employment for both partners. It is a good idea to use online portals, recruitment agencies, social networks and other sources of information when looking for a job. It is also a good idea to send applications to companies that hire employees from different countries, as these companies are often more open to hiring couples.
Financial planning
Before working abroad, carefully analyse the cost of living in the country and calculate what it will cost to live in your new location. Be prepared for possible expenses related to the move, such as housing or transport costs.
Getting to know the culture and language
Going abroad for work requires partners to adapt to the new culture and learn the language spoken by the local community. Start learning the language before you leave so that it is easier to communicate and get along with your new work colleagues.
Planning your free time
If you plan to work abroad, it is important to organise your free time accordingly, especially at the beginning. Work will not become burdensome and tiring if you find time to relax and visit new places. Think about how to spend your free time, what to see and where to go. This is the only way to make the most of your time abroad.
For couples, people who want to develop professionally and personally, working abroad is an interesting option. It is important to plan your trip carefully, take costs into account and commit to learning the language and culture of the country.

Please use this thread to ask any lawn care questions that you may have. There are no stupid questions. This includes weed, fungus, insect, and grass identification. For help on asking a question, please refer to the "How to Get the Most out of Your Post" section at the top of the sidebar.
Check out the sidebar if you're interested in more information on plant hardiness zones, identifying problems, weed control, fertilizer, establishing grass, and organic methods. Also, you may contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for local info.
How to Get the Most out of Your Post:
Include a photo of the problem. You can upload to imgur.com for free and it's easy to do. One photo should contain enough information for people to understand the immediate area around the problem (dense shade, extremely sloped, etc.). Other photos should include close-ups of the grass or weed in question: such as this, this, or this. The more photos or context to the situation will help us identify the problem and propose some solutions.

Also, in general, is there a better way to go about building a poker calculator (for the real game state, that is, you only know your own hand) than just brute forcing it?

2023.06.02 09:54 Professional_Walk261 Need Help In Notion Finance tracker

Hi everyone, I've been working on creating a personal finance tracker in Notion, and I'm facing a challenge with calculating the monthly income totals for each category. I was hoping someone could provide some guidance or share their expertise to help me find a solution. Here's a brief overview of the issue: I have an "Income Log" table where I track various income entries, including the income name, category, amount received, and the month of each entry. I also have an "Income Category" table where I maintain a list of income categories and their associated income entries. The goal is to calculate the total income for each category in a specific month. For example, I want to know how much I earned in the "Salary" category in January, separate from the total earnings in other months. I've tried using rollup properties to calculate the totals, but the challenge is that it aggregates the income across all months, rather than providing the totals for individual months.

2023.06.02 06:49 AudioKinetic Employer pension contributions 1.25% of salary - is this legal?

Hi everyone and thanks for any advice or suggested links.
My salary is slightly over 100K, so I asked my (new) employer to increase my pension contribution from 5% to 10% to offset the 60% trap. Theirs is the default 3%.
In the first full months payslip, I couldn’t reconcile either their 3% or my 10%. I asked for a breakdown and they advised:
The income range per month they apply the pension calculation to is (roughly) £520-£3700 and then 20% BR tax is applied to reduce it further.
To put this into perspective, my monthly salary (before tax) is just shy of 9K and their final pension contribution was £110 - so 1.25% effective. They applied the same calculation to my contribution so I’m contributing under £300 - on a monthly salary of 9K before tax which seems insane to me.
Is this right? Is this legal and can they do this?
Do I have any options?

2023.06.02 05:34 Sweet-Awareness-8443 Mortgage/DTI Estimates

Hi All,
Slightly nervous homebuyer! I'm in the process of putting an offer in on a house and could use some thoughts if this is too tight for my income and DTI. This would be my first home and a great long-term investment in an area I enjoy (coastal South). Details are below
Age: 29
Gross annual salary: $~103,950- work from home.
Home cost: $240k (between the sellers credits and a gift from family, most of the closing costs are covered).
FHA loan down payment: $8,840 (3.5%)
Loan amount: ~$231k
Estimated total mortgage, including rate estimates, principal, taxes and insurance: $1,800-$2,000 depending on the final rate locked in, but max is $2k. Breakdown is about $1,300 up to $1,500 in P+I (depends on rates), $243 in insurance (coastal area premiums), $70 in taxes, and $56 in flood insurance, $90-$100 in PMI.
Current Fixed Monthly debts: $543 car payment and $686 in eventual student loans when payments return in August
about $2k in CC debt that will be cleared soon.
Good credit score above 720
Monthly take home Post-tax, contributions, etc: $5,600.
I contribute about 11% of my gross to my 401k, and $300/month to my IRA Roth. About $21k in savings, with another $8k in investments and around $100K in retirement (stocks and 401k). Only other fixed monthly expenses are about $170 in car insurance and then some misc (spotify, etc).

My DTI ratio with the assumed mortgage ranges ~36%. Is that too high? Is this mortgage too high? Lender said I'm more than fine and most of the online calculators say the same. Should I lower my 401k contribution down to 8-9% for the first year to add some more flexibility back into my monthly budget?

Thank you!

2023.06.02 04:57 Prestigious_Stress17 What Do You Need To Consider When Choosing Construction Agencies in the UK?

In the booming construction industry, finding skilled workers can be a challenge. That’s where recruitment agencies come in – they specialize in connecting construction companies with the right talent. But how do you choose the right agency for your needs? Here, we’ll explore what to consider when selecting construction agencies in UK. We will assist you in making a well-informed decision, allowing you to focus on achieving success by comprehending the support options, assessing the reputation, and evaluating the candidate pool of the construction agencies.

What Support Do Construction Agencies in UK Offer?

Construction agencies in UK offer a range of support services to construction companies looking for skilled workers. A notable service they provide is candidate sourcing, where they utilize their extensive networks and databases to locate candidates possessing the necessary skills and experience you require. Additionally, they may offer pre-screening services, including resume reviews and initial phone interviews, ensuring that you are presented with candidates who are well-suited to your needs.
Another area where construction agencies can provide support is in navigating legal requirements around employment. This might include verifying right-to-work status or ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
Some construction agencies also offer training programs or other resources to help develop your workforce. As an illustration, they might establish collaborations with trade schools or apprenticeship programs to facilitate the professional growth of employees or attract fresh talent into the industry.
It is crucial to assess the unique support services provided by each agency to ensure that you select one that aligns with the specific needs and goals of your company.

What Do You Get For The Cost?

When considering a construction recruitment agency in the UK, it’s important to understand what you’ll be getting for your investment. The expenses associated with hiring through an agency can differ between companies, typically involving a fee calculated as a percentage of the employee’s salary.
The benefits of using an agency include saving time and resources on sourcing candidates and managing the hiring process. Moreover, you will gain access to their expertise in identifying exceptional talent within the industry, along with their extensive network of potential hires that may not be easily accessible through other channels.

What Is Their Industry Reputation?

When choosing a construction recruitment agency in the UK, it’s important to consider their industry reputation. This can be determined by researching online reviews and asking for recommendations from colleagues within the industry.
A strong reputation indicates that the agency is reliable, trustworthy and delivers quality results. A good way to assess an agency’s reputation is to look at their track record of successful placements with reputable companies.
It’s also worth considering if they have any specialist knowledge or experience in your specific area of construction. Choose an agency with a proven track record in civil engineering projects when seeking experienced candidates in this field.
Ensure the agency practices ethical business and fair treatment of clients and candidates during recruitment. A reputable agency with a positive industry reputation will offer high-quality service and find suitable candidates, providing peace of mind.

Do Construction Agencies in UK Have A Strong Pool Of Candidates?

Choose construction agencies in the UK with access to a highly qualified candidate pool, which means they have an extensive network and database of talented individuals actively seeking opportunities in the industry.
A reputable agency will have a robust screening process in place for all potential candidates. This ensures that only those with relevant experience and qualifications are put forward for available positions. It also means that the recruitment agency can match employers with suitable employees quickly and efficiently.
The availability of a robust candidate pool is crucial when choosing a construction recruitment agency in the UK. It increases the chances of finding top-quality employees, saving time and cost in hiring.

Conclusion

Choosing the right construction agencies in UK is crucial to finding the best candidates for your business. Consider industry reputation, candidate pool, and cost to make an informed decision for achieving success.
Research thoroughly before selecting an agency, as they vary in quality. Take the time to evaluate each agency carefully and ask questions about their services. This will help ensure that you get the support you need while also keeping costs under control.
Construction Recruitment Agencies in the UK provide valuable resources for businesses seeking skilled workers, offering benefits such as location coverage, specialization expertise, streamlined hiring, and high-quality candidates to drive success.

2023.06.02 01:27 Experiment_626_S "International schooling" online K-12 school experience as a teacher. Anyone else has any experience with them?

I've been teaching here for a while now and have noticed that their system is super unfair to the teacher.
The teacher is required to work 140 hours a month which equates to 7 hours a day 5 days a week which isn't bad. But when you realise how they calculate the hours, its super difficult to make those hours. Your hours is based on recorded zoom session times. Class time is actually 50 minutes and there is a 10 minute buffer. So you need 8 classes a day to make the minimum time required. If you have cancellations then you don't make those hours. A lunch break is not accounted for in working hours.
So the school is meant to be based in Texas. I assume that it would follow US labour laws and therefore that the minimum wage would be 7.25 USD per hour. Nope. Its 5 USD per hour.
The admin department ignores messages via WhatsApp for days and selectively responds. They also do not reply to emails timeously.
Its hard to get a family- work balance due to the struggle to make those hours. Does anyone else have any experience with them? If so, what has it been like for you?

2023.06.02 01:01 Pulsar000 Budget: What's Reasonable?

Hi All:
This is mostly directed at SDs but of course anyone is welcome to chime in.
What's a reasonable percentage of take home pay from W2 to spend on sugar?
I'm not asking what the SB should get but rather what % of the SD's take home pay would be reasonable to spend?
For example, is 10% or 20% or 30% of take home pay reasonable to spend?
I've done some calculations and if I were to sugar, it would roughly be the equivalent of paying child support for 2 kids in Texas where I live. I don't have children.
I'm in the six-figure range and currently save about 60% of my take home pay after ALL non-sugar expenses. Have an apartment, no kids, no mortgage, no alimony, no debt, and don't support anyone financially.
To ask the opposite question, what would be an unreasonable %?

Using Column Values in Formula !!
Hello, I'm trying to achieve something extremely simple but I'm still not familiar with the automation that's possible in this great app!
I want to track manage my finances, so I've created an inline-database with two columns "Name" and "Amount" ; what my bills are and their amount. I also have a property within the database called "SALARY" and "TOTAL BILLS". At the bottom of the "Amount" column I have calculated the total using the SUM command, I want to display this SUM into the "TOTAL BILLS" property.
I'll then use a formula to calculate my NET based on the total bills and how much I want to save each month.
Is there a simple way of doing this? I have tried my best to try and reference the SUM amount but cannot get anywhere!! Please share any help you can.

Banning ChatGPT in Classrooms is a Disservice to Students
Educators need to take control of AI tools in their classroom.
Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the way we learn, work, and communicate has taken a seismic shift. It’s clear that teachers cannot stop the adoption of AI tools.
I tutor students between 10th grade and seniors in college, and I have a secret to tell you: most of them are already using ChatGPT for their assignments. They have found ways to make their usage undetectable by plagiarism checkers, simply by changing a few words and phrases.
Who can blame them? When used correctly, these technologies can make all of our lives easier.
It’s time for teachers to embrace these technologies and take control of the narrative. By learning how to constructively use AI tools in the classroom, we have the potential to improve the lives of teachers and the quality of education we provide to our students.

AI Does Not Automatically Create A+ Outputs

First and foremost, we need to dispel the misconception that AI tools can effortlessly generate excellent results.
We treat AI like some almighty god that can do any task. This is your reminder that AI tools are nothing without human input (not yet, at least 😉).
Also, AI tools are not search engines. If a student were to prompt ChatGPT with “write an essay on Of Mice and Men,” the output would be off-topic, resulting in a B paper. While that query is appropriate for the age of search engines, AI tools respond to that prompt with a generic response.
There is a field of study called “prompt engineering,” which focuses on creating and refining high-quality prompts for AI. Just like in life, the concept of “garbage in, garbage out” applies here. Constructing high-quality prompts can significantly improve the performance of AI models on specific tasks.
However, even after learning the skills of prompt engineering, students will not be able to create a final draft of an essay, ready to be copied and pasted into Turnitin.com.
Even if a student uses AI for an essay, there is still work to be done. Checking facts, restructuring the content, and rephrasing sentences are essential steps to make it an A+ paper with strong sources and robust arguments. These skills were important 30 years ago, and they are still important today.
We need to teach students to use these tools to prepare them for the modern workforce. This requires identifying the skills that are still relevant with AI, like critical thinking, persuasive writing, and problem solving, and the ones that are no longer relevant, like writing the first draft of an essay and rote memorization.

The Nature of the Workforce is Changing

Throughout our history, technological advancements have constantly reshaped the definition of work – not only what we do, but how we do it. Ultimately, technological advancements are deflationary they decrease the cost of doing something.
As noted in Bradley Sacks’ newsletter from Semafor, the number of workers needed to generate $1 million in revenue has decreased from eight in the late 1980’s to a mere two today. But what does this really mean?

https://preview.redd.it/x5lwtonnpf3b1.jpg?width=712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76aa849857b06d7e10d8debb4b7c64537c0aa86b
Over this time period, innovations like computers, software, and AI have increased the productivity of the average worker. Ultimately, this increased productivity reflects a shift in the type of labor required. It’s less about manually intensive tasks and more about knowledge-based, creative, and complex problem-solving tasks.
It’s high time that teachers begin to incorporate the important skills and tools of the last three decades into their classrooms. We are not setting kids up for success by teaching them trigonometry on a brick-sized Texas Instruments calculator they’ll never use after high school. How about teaching them how to do it on a spreadsheet?
Ultimately, the workforce our children will be entering will be dramatically different from the one we know today. AI is a unique technological leap because it is the first time that reasoning has been automated. For the first time ever, our technologies can make judgements, create assumptions, and generate novel creative works.
Since AI models are never 100% accurate, the core skills of creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and retrieving information from reliable sources are still as important as they have ever been. These parts of the curriculum are not under threat.
As our students enter a changing world, it would be a disservice to them to keep teaching them in the same ways as we always have. The core curriculum must evolve to meet the demands of the modern era, where more can be done with less.

AI Can Improve Student Outcomes

The “2 sigma problem” was a study conducted by educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom in 1984. Bloom sought to investigate the impact of one-on-one tutoring on student performance compared to traditional classroom instruction.
In his study, Bloom found that students who received personalized one-on-one tutoring performed at a level approximately two standard deviations (2 sigmas) above the average of students in traditional classroom settings. This means that the students who received tutoring achieved significantly higher outcomes compared to their peers.
It implies that tutoring has the power to transform an average student into an exceptional one and lift below-average students to above-average levels of achievement.
However, he called it the “2 sigma problem” because it was economically infeasible to provide one-on-one tutoring to every student. Traditional tutoring methods are resource-intensive and often limited in reach due to constraints such as time, availability, and cost.
For the first time in history, we have the opportunity to solve the “2 sigma problem,” since AI technologies make one-on-one tutoring economically viable. Think of an AI as an intelligent, personalized tutor who could deliver individualized instruction and support.
For example, an AI could provide a detailed walkthrough of a difficult question, or generate a first draft of an essay, or generate an adaptive assessment perfect for the student’s level of understanding. These services were only available to the rich, but with new leaps in AI, we now have the unique opportunity of delivering this experience to everyone and improving student outcomes.

Don’t Ban, Harness the Potential of AI Tools

The time is now to adapt our approach to education and embrace AI tools. Banning them would deny students the opportunity to learn how to responsibly use these technologies and navigate a rapidly changing world. By embracing AI, teachers can empower students to excel, prepare them for the modern workforce, and improve student outcomes.
