Democrats have a branding problem

I was inspired by u/Randomuser1520 's post about the Democratic Party's seemingly weak bench of future potential presidential nominees.
A lot of the problems trace back to 2016, but I'd argue the Democrats' branding woes go back even further. Think all the way back to the last time the Democrats had a consistently strong electoral record as a party -- the 90s, where the only truly bad year for Ds was 1994. Bill Clinton had successfully rebranded the party under the 'Third Way' label that Dems at any level could embrace and benefit from, and he had a clear successor in Al Gore. But Gore loses narrowly in 2000, and the problems for the Dems' brand begin.
'Yes We Can'
After 9/11, the electorate supports Bush and they support war. Dems' brand takes a hit and they lose the 2002 midterms. In 2004, John Kerry is successfully painted as an out-of-touch Ivy League liberal, disengaged from 'real America.' Dems lose and their brand suffers further.
But by the end of Bush's term, most Americans are disillusioned with Dubyaism. They wanted change, and one man promises to lead them to it with posters that proclaim 'HOPE' and cries of 'Yes We Can,' heralding in a new age of politics. Barack Obama and the Democrats are swept into a trifecta in Washington.
And we certainly got a new age of politics. When Obama was inaugurated, pundits speculated about the 'emerging Democratic majority', and how the GOP may literally go extinct in ten years. By the end of Obama's second term, those same pundits are surveying the absolutely decimated state of the Democratic party at all levels of power. Dems had lost the Senate, the House, most governorships, and most state legislatures. Control of the state legislatures makes the GOP's hold on the House even stronger. Control of the Senate effectively leads to control of the Supreme Court.
While Obama certainly can't be blamed for everything the GOP threw at him, I feel like it's safe to say his rebranding of the Democratic party failed in the long run. The 'Party of Hope' was sunk into the quagmire of a slow economic recovery, some of the most cynical politicking ever, and some of the most dysfunctional White House-Congress relationships in the history of the country. Obama's signature healthcare legislation would languish in the 30s approval-wise until after he left office. By 2015, no one was talking about the Democrats as the Party of Hope anymore. Even the guy who designed the original 'Hope' poster said he was frustrated by the lack of progress under the Obama admin. I'd argue that the Republicans were responsible for the clear majority of this dysfunction, but if their goal was to muddy the waters between the parties, they succeeded. And with the Tea Party, they were better at rebranding themselves even when they were in the opposition.
And none of this was helped by the face that Obama seemed extremely reluctant, even uninterested, in stepping into the role of party leader. Congressional Democrats were frustrated at the way he kept his distance from them, making it hard to solidify the policy goals they'd implemented in his first term. This article (https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/us/aloof-obama-is-frustrating-his-own-party.html) sums it up well, with this prescient quote sticking out:

In interviews, nearly two dozen Democratic lawmakers and senior congressional aides suggested that Mr. Obama’s approach has left him with few loyalists to effectively manage the issues erupting abroad and at home and could imperil his efforts to leave a legacy in his final stretch in office.

And sure enough, Obama's legacy was in peril before he even left office.
'Stronger Together'
In 2016, Democrats didn't plan for a primary, they planned for a coronation. Hillary Clinton had been locking up all the support she could get from the Democratic establishment while Obama was serving his second term. Biden would seem like the clear establishment successor, but by the time he was able to turn his attention from VP duties to the primary he realized Hillary had completely boxed him out. She had already corralled all the big donors, operatives, and endorsements into her corner, and Joe was checkmated before he even sat down to the board. Thus, he turned down the opportunity, likely burying his long-nurtured presidential ambitions.
But then the coronation gets bumpy. Sanders challenges her from the outside, and immediately begins putting her on the spot as to why she's running. In other words, what does she envision for the Democratic brand? Hillary herself doesn't know. Is it a third term of Bill (whose star was starting to fade among everyone whose name doesn't rhyme with Shames Scarville), a third term of Obama (whose Hope posters have since become landfill), or an all-new thing?
To Hillary's credit, she couldn't portray herself as a total break from the past, both because she had been was strongly anchored to the national political landscape for the last thirty years, and because she could hardly attack Obama's record too harshly. In the end, she also struggled to brand both herself and the party. Consider the slogans most associated with her campaign; 'Forward Together' and 'Stronger Together' sound like the slogans of a centrist third party with no concrete policy ideas. They just attempted to project a feeling of unity onto a people who were united only, if the candidacies of Sanders and Trump meant anything, in the feeling that 'establishment' politicians like HRC had failed. And, of course, 'I'm with Her' was barely a rebrand at all, simply associating the party with its uncharismatic yet seemingly unstoppable frontrunner.
In the meantime, Trump had done the opposite, rebranding himself and the GOP as the party of 'America First populism.' What that meant exactly in terms of policy seemed to change from day to day But as a brand, as a forceful statement of intent, it worked, especially when contrasted with a seemingly rudderless HRC campaign that failed to answer the age-old question: 'Why are you running for president?'
'For the People'
After the 2016 fiasco, the Democrats were decimated and leaderless. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had passed his leadership position to Chuck Schumer and passed on soon after Trump took office. Tim Ryan led a mutiny against Nancy Pelosi, blaming her in part for the party's plunge from ascendance to irrelevance in the House. Hillary Clinton disappeared into the woods of Chappaqua. Obama started making a docu-series for Netflix. Joe Biden entered semi-retirement and wrote a book.
But in all of this, they found something they had been lacking. A brand.
Not the one they would have preferred, but one that would work nonetheless for winning elections. House Dems would embrace the (once-again) vague slogan of 'For the People' ahead of the 2018 midterms, but the aim was clear. The Democrats were now the Opposition; the Anti-Trump party.
Trump's approval rating was not just low, but incredibly sticky. People tended to have very firm opinions on him, and so his approval rating barely escaped the 35-45% range, with him almost hitting 50% before the pandemic hit. Thus, running on opposition to Trump would be fine electorally. In 2018, the Democrats had a blue wave year based mostly on opposition to Trump, retaking the house. Ironically, a big policy motivator for voters was backlash against the GOP's effort to repeal and replace Obamacare -- a promise that had driven Republican electoral gains since the bill was passed into law. Republican branding and messaging had been so successful that, for the better part of the decade, people trusted them to 'fix' the ACA until the very last minute before the replacement was signed.
'Battle for the Soul of the Nation'
But the problem remained for 2020 -- who would lead them? This was a difficult decision even before the pandemic. And Democratic primary voters were treated to a veritable buffet on angles on how to rebrand the party to beat Trump.
Should the party embrace democratic socialism under Sanders, or heavy consumer advocacy under Warren? Should it embrace a young, charismatic up-and-comer like Harris, Buttigieg, or O'Rourke or someone just as 'establishment' as Hillary, like Michael Bloomberg? Old-school liberalism with the Klob? Whatever Andrew Yang was doing?
But as the polls drew near, the Democrats seemed to conclude that beating Trump was simply more important than charting a new course for the party. If they could get elected or rebrand, they'd choose the former. And so all the other more moderate candidates dropped out to consolidate the vote around Biden, as the safe, expected pick who could stay the course. Biden and his surrogates began adopting the slogan 'Battle for the Soul of the Nation,' an epic and apocalyptic phrase that is still fundamentally reactive in tone, implying that the biggest motivator to vote for Democrats that fall was not to pass any specific agenda, but to put a stop to the GOP's plans.
Biden wouldn't govern in this way, but he would campaign this way -- as the normal, capable candidate who could lead the country's post-covid recovery in opposition to Trump's perceived incompetence. Biden won, but Democrats didn't get nearly the boost they wanted from covid, and House candidates underperformed Biden nationally, leading to a surprising loss of seats in the House. And after the effort to throw out the election failed, Trump left office with severely damaged standing with independents. The anti-Trump brand had delivered Dems a trifecta; now it was time to use it; hopefully to establish a new brand for a new decade.
'Building Back Better'
Upon taking office, Biden and the Dems lay out their agenda; the 'Build Back Better' plan, which centers on a three-pronged approach; a pandemic relief bill, an infrastructure bill, and a social policy bill. Passing such plans will involve all 50 Senate D's on board in some cases, and a bipartisan filibuster-proof majority of 60 senators in other cases.
People laugh, think back to 2010, and begin arguing whether a prediction that the GOP will control 55 Senate seats by 2023 is too conservative. Nancy Pelosi is trying to manage a mere five-seat majority in the house. Mitch McConnell, who once feasted on the Democrats' lost hopes the way a hungry turtle devours a plate of juicy strawberries, still held enough sway in the Senate to hold up any significant policy not related to budget reconciliation. Even then, Schumer must wrangle mavericks like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. Dramatic divisions still rip across the fabric of American society. But then, something truly strange happens.
The 117th Congress ends up being one of the most productive sessions ever.
Whether or not you think any or all of the 117th's acts were good policy, it's undeniable that this was an unusually politically efficient session, especially considering the last decade of hardball politics. Bipartisan majorities drive the infrastructure act, a gun control act, a tech-manufacturing promotion act, and even a somewhat-legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide. Plus, Schumer and Pelosi navigate their tiny majorities toward passing partisan priorities, like the pandemic relief act and the scaled-down Build Back Better social policy bill, rebranded as the Inflation Reduction Act or IRA. McConnell drops his trademark stonewalling and collaborates with Biden on the bipartisan bills, and 'Yea' votes roll in even from deep red states -- Republican senators from Mississippi, West Virginia, and North Dakota get these bills over the line. Bipartisanship returns to Congress in fleeting glances -- something that I feel confident in arguing absolutely no one expected Biden or the Dem leaders to be able to do.
Of course, no one has forgotten 2010, and 2022 looks to be another rough year. Inflation soars, and Biden's approval rating drops. Dems brace for impact. The Dobbs ruling happens, but polls repeatedly suggest that the economy is the top issue on voters' minds, and they don't like Biden's handling of it.
But while these things are true, they ignore a crucial factor -- the GOP is embroiled in an identity crisis of its own. The leader of the party is claiming to be the legitimate president of the United States, which is a bit of a hard issue to ignore. Trump loyalists beat out 'establishment' Republicans in the primaries, and bring their hard promotion of the MAGA brand to the general elections. And they lose.
I think it's fair to say that the GOP lost most of the key races of the 2022 midterms, rather than Democrats winning them. Swing state Republican parties chose candidates who adhered so closely to a brand so toxic that independents still chose the Democrats, even in some cases where they were dissatisfied with the party. Republicans who have managed to establish a brand for themselves -- DeSantis, Kemp, and DeWine among them -- soar, while the Trumpiest candidates fall flat. McConnell remains in the minority, and McCarthy becomes the head of a very, very dysfunctional family.
Will Brandon's Rebrand Stand?
So, coming off an unusually strong midterm, where does the party go in 2024? Probably, as u/Randomuser1520 said, back to Biden. When your party wins one of the most fiercely contested elections in American history, has a productive legislative session, and then massively overperforms in the midterm, you don't usually change horses regardless of what approval polling says. If Biden were just 10 years younger and the health concerns were off the table, there would be no question in anyone's mind who to nominate.
The establishment and progressive wings of the party seem to be behind him if he runs, meaning challenges will only come from real outsiders like Marianne Williamson and Robert Kennedy Jr. The DNC will probably work to make those challenges as unviable as possible.
2024 is tricky to predict. Trump is favored on the Republican side, and as said before, his brand is so toxic that Biden can probably glide to reelection barring any massive economic downturns or serious health problems. I won't get too much into 2024, because it seems pretty clearly on the path to becoming another referendum on the GOP's brand, not the Democrats'. Biden's second term (and the rest of his first term) may be defined as much by implementation of the legislation they passed during the 117th as much as by new legislation, if not more.
So the question becomes this -- where does the party go in 2028? Or, in other words, what will Democrats take away from the Biden presidency, and how will Biden shape the party's brand going forward? Who they choose to lead the party next will tell, and Biden's presidency may already be laying out a blueprint.
In his 1996 State of the Union address, Bill Clinton declared 'the era of big government is over,' essentially conceding that Reagan and his vision of a small role for the federal government in domestic affairs had won out for the time, and that Democrats would need to work within that political reality in order to win elections. Obama's efforts to change that status quo resulted in an avalanche of backlash from Tea Partiers, self-proclaimed champions of fiscal conservatism. Hillary Clinton's failed campaign strategy arguably rested more on that understanding of the political climate than anything else, causing her to miss a series of growing frustrations with Reaganism at times channelled by Sanders and, at times, Trump -- at decimation of the manufacturing sector, at the growing gap between rich and poor, at China's seemingly unstoppable three-decade rise at the expense of the U.S.
Biden's approach to American industry and government is a strong repudiation of Reaganism, based around the idea that it is the government's job to fortify and guide the economy in ways that are necessary where the free market has little incentive to. It argues that the issues of infrastructural decay, manufacturing decline, and the growing need for green energy in the face of climate change will only be solved if the government directs the power of the private sector towards those goals at great upfront cost. And free trade, long held as the unassailable source of America's prosperity, must now only be employed in moderation -- if the U.S. has to arguably break international law to lure foreign investment into the U.S. through generous subsidies, it will be worth it, even if it earns the fury of our economic partners. This may be the groundwork of Bidenism.
These plans may fail. The money may be wasted by incompetent or corrupt administrators and the American people may become even more jaded at the thought of big government. But movement within the GOP may suggest a broader shift in the American mind towards this kind of economic interventionism is already in progress. Promising to reverse the decline of manufacturing through tariffs and other measures would have been political anathema twenty years ago, but it has become a core Republican plank. Florida Republicans' punitive measures towards Disney and the GOP's growing support for government action against Big Tech companies suggests openness towards not just using state power to guide the economy, but also to reshape the social landscape by manipulating the private sector. It may well be that the era of small government is over.
I've sorted some potential 'brands' and some of the people who might be nominated in 2028 / become party standard-bearers should the Democrats go in that direction. These lists aren't exhaustive; I'm just trying to establish a general vibe.
The 'Biden Blueprint': Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Gina Raimondo
These are members of the Biden admin who have been given great power (and great piles of money) to enact the legislation of the 117th. If American sentiment towards big government changes as quickly as I think it could, a Cabinet secretary could have a decent shot in 2028. Harris would be the natural successor as the VP, but Transportation Sec Buttigieg and Commerce Sec Raimondo, who were empowered to implement much of the Infrastructure Act and the CHIPS Act respectively, could become standard-bearers for this new vision of technocratic governance if they administer these programs well (and in a way that makes headlines). If Energy Sec Granholm were a natural-born citizen, she would definitely fit here as well, considering how much power the IRA gave her department.
The 'New New Deal': Amy Klobuchar, Catherine Cortez Masto, Mark Kelly, Tammy Duckworth, Raphael Warnock
Liberal senators who are capable of working across the aisle to achieve compromise could be a strong bet if Democrats want to recreate the success of the 117th Congress in the future. There's always an argument that effective legislators won't necessarily make for effective executives, but these choices would help with Democrats' goal of rebranding the Democratic party as the party you vote for if you want Washington to function properly and anticipate constituents' needs. Such a ticket could brand itself as the path to bipartisan yet assertive solutions on familiar and emerging issues like immigration reform, federal protection for abortion, the housing shortage, and the drug crisis.
The 'Bulwark': Roy Cooper, Laura Kelly, Andy Beshear
I'll admit that when I began writing this post, I had a more favorable opinion of the above three governors and politicians like them as presidential nominees and the potential 'future of the party.' I no longer feel as strongly about them, however, because I don't believe they do enough to change the brand of the Democrats and the political environment as a whole. These governors are best known for winning races in red states; for holding the line against the most conservative policies while finding areas of compromise, especially on kitchen-table issues.
But this brand of Democrat is fundamentally reactive, even defensive -- it assumes that most of the job will be obstructing right-wing legislation from a red legislature. In other words, it is a kind of strategy you use when you're trying to hold ground, not gain it. It works well when your opponent's brand is toxic (as the GOP's has been since 2016), but this I suspect this brand of 'competent normality' will struggle if the opposition ceases to actively repel voters. If Trump and his acolytes continue to hold a strong grip on the party through 2024 and beyond, this brand may not be a bad bet short-term, but long-term Democrats want to be the ones establishing the rules of the game, not just beating your opponent at theirs. That's what a successful political brand does. While Dems in similar situation should definitely look to these governors for guidance in running their campaigns (and hopefully, their administrations), I would caution at this point against basing the national party's brand on their model.
I think somewhere between these three groups lies a successful path forward for the Democrats that towards becoming the dominant party in U.S. politics at the federal level. There are some other interesting currents in the party; like how Democratic governors like Whitmer, Evers, and Walz have rebuilt D strength the Midwest after a rough 2010s, and how Western Dems like Jared Polis, Mary Peltola, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez have found unexpected electoral stength by embracing a form of libertarianism. However, these currents may be regional, and Democrats shouldn't necessarily try to nationalize every idea that works in one part of the country. Creating different regional 'flavors' of Democrat would be necessary to keep the party relevant in all parts of the country.
Regarding the 2020 primary runners-up, I don't think most of the visions laid out then work post-2024, and for this reason I tend not to give too much weight to current Democratic primary polling, because it assumes these same people would be running again.
Assuming Biden ends his term without catastrophe, I don't think the party needs to place all their faith in a young, charismatic Obama wannabe like O'Rourke or Swalwell, nor does it need to drastically pivot to the center, nor does it need to proclaim itself the party of 'outsiders,' nor does it need to give the reins to the progressive wing. If everything goes right, they can remain ideologically where they are now (roughly) and establish a solid brand for the first time in a generation.
The Democrats been losing the branding war since the days of Nixon. They may currently have all the tools they need right now to change that, and set the expectations for the next fifty years of politics. Let's see how they do.

Gosling would help him with his shows, and then watch his uncle turn into someone else when he performed, someone different and more full of life.
Gosling says this uncle also bolstered his act with talent shows, people drawn from the local community, and "everyone had this secret talent. You'd see the guy that bags groceries at the A&P, and he has some version of 'Black Velvet' that'll bring the house down, you know? And then you realize that that’s really him and the performance is the guy he's playing who packs bags at the A&P."
If you are a certain age, you will well remember the frenzy in the early part of the past decade around Gosling, and particularly Gosling's appearance
...which was the subject of endless Tumblr posts and thirsty bar conversations. "I think it embarrasses him in some ways," [Emily] Blunt says, about the public perception of Gosling as some sort of cross between the perfect boyfriend and the coolest man around, "because it’s not what he feels."
"I got the sense it wasn't really what he felt about himself."
Earlier in his career, Gosling used to talk about being raised by a single mother who was attractive, and how frightening he found the predatory energy that came from the men they'd encounter, how uneasy he was made by the way people related to her. ... Gosling says now, flatly, that he never made the connection between his mother and himself and the attention his own appearance began to garner as he became famous.
And he did his best to depersonalize the attention he was getting.
But the whole experience, Gosling admits, was "confusing."
These days Gosling lives in a quiet town in the southern half of California.
Because he brings his family to the location of each movie he shoots, he aims to do only one or so per year. Most of the time, he says, he's simply at home. Relatives come around, Gosling says, but he and [Eva] Mendes don't have a nanny; whatever they do, they do it themselves. Gosling is frankly romantic about his life with his daughters and Mendes. He says things were one way, then they were another. "I was looking for her, you know?"

Were you conscious of that?

"No. But it all makes sense now."
He says as a parent, whenever he doesn’t know what to do, which happens from time to time, "I just lean on Eva."
"She knows what's important, always."
"She just somehow knows. So if ever I’m in my head about it, I just ask her."
Gosling and I depart the train, talking about nothing in particular:
...childhood, Starter jackets, the way that playing cool can skew into a fear of playing at all. "Like, you thought you were winning by not trying," he says. "Or at least showing that you weren't trying. But it kind of backfires a little later, when you start actually not trying in order to win."
And I'm nodding at the profundity of what Gosling is saying, and he keeps going: "And then you realize that that's actually what losing is. Is just not trying."
And I say yes!
And he says, because he knows he has me now, "And all you had to do was watch Rocky to realize that just trying is winning."
"I'm having a little train regret," Gosling says, a few weeks later. "I think just the nostalgic nature of it and the hypnotic rocking motion got me musing and self-mythologizing more than I intended to."
"When you asked me about Eva and kids," Gosling says, "I think I said, I didn't think about kids until she told me she was pregnant. That's not really true. I didn't want to overshare, but now I also don't want to misrepresent. I mean, it's true that I wasn’t thinking about kids before I met her,
"...but after I met Eva, I realized that I just didn't want to have kids without her."
"And there were moments on The Place Beyond the Pines where we were pretending to be a family, and I didn't really want it to be pretend anymore. I realized that this would be a life I would be really lucky to have."
Ryan Gosling subscribes to what he calls an escape-room style of being an actor.
This is a little theoretical, because he's never actually been to an escape room, and he’s not totally sure what happens inside of them. "Maybe I should do one," he says, "to see if this really works."
But the general idea is: You're thrown into a particular set of circumstances and you've got to find your way out.
Maybe you show up on set one day and it's raining when it's not supposed to be raining, Gosling says, "or this person doesn't want to say any of that dialogue, or the neighbor’s got a leaf blower and they’re not turning it off." What do you do next?
Over time, Gosling has discovered that this approach might apply to more than just acting.
Maybe, for instance, you're a kid growing up in a town you don't want to be in and you’re trying to locate an exit. Maybe you're looking for something you can't put into words and you make movies to try to pin down whatever it is you're looking for. Maybe you're a person who never envisioned raising a family and then you meet the person who changes, in some radical way, how you see yourself and your future.
Life comes at you, in all its unanticipated and startling particulars; the thing that makes you an artist is the way you respond.

Advised to repost my resin coating repair of a Northstar canoe. Apologies to those that have already read it…

I bought a Northstar Northwind 17 from Rockwood at the end of the season last year and just finished with my resin coat.
I needed a fresh coat of resin to seal up the bottom. If you are coating a Northstar Canoe, you need to buy your resin directly from Northstar as they use a proprietary mix for their canoes. Don’t use the West System. It won’t work as well. Northstar will send it out the day you order it and you will get it within 48 hours.
With the canoe upside down on sawhorses, start by taking blue painters tape and creating a “football” shape on the bottom of the canoe. I’m talking maybe 3 inches down from the overturned canoe from the bow and stern and it should come around to just above the water line on the side of the canoe at its widest point. Northstar recommends 150 grit sandpaper on an orbital sander but I advise that you need to work up to at least 220 and I went to 320 grit for a smoother finish. Wipe off with an old towel in between sanding coats to see where you missed and get everything nice and even. When you get done with 320 grit you will wipe down the whole thing and then clean it with acetone so it’s ready for the resin.
You mix the resin and MEKP hardener (which you can buy at Home Depot in a tiny clear tube near the Gorilla glue in that aisle) at a 50:1 ratio. For canoes larger than the Northstar Northwind 17, you should buy the $85 two-pint bottom refinishing kit from Northstar. This ends up being 2 teaspoons per pint of hardener to resin. Here’s where you have to move fast because once you stir the two pints resin and the four teaspoons hardener all together you’ve got about 15 minutes total on a warm day in the shade to get it done. Use gloves, eyewear, and a soluble filtered 3M painters mask if you have it!! I used a regular 3M mask and got high as a kite. No bueno. Use a better mask than me.
Pour the resin directly on the center line of the canoe from your mix container and start rolling and get everything covered because that stuff starts turning into Jell-O in the mix container after 15 minutes. I covered the bottom of my Northwind 17 and I still had over half of a pint left. Don’t try and get cute and pour any extra resin on at the last minute to use it up because it will start to gum up and you will look to the sky and scream, most likely cursing your ancestors for helping you make that poor decision. Be smart.
Make sure you take off the blue painters tape right after you get done coating the bottom so you don’t leave a line. When you remove the tape it tends to blend the line away and it will be almost unnoticeable. If you can, once you’re done you need to move your canoe into the sunlight and that sucker will cure in about six hours. I would do it basically at about 9 AM that way you’ll have all day in the sun to cure. My results were fabulous.
I just purchased a 1999 Bell Magic from a BWCA.com member in the BlackGold layup and it has a bunch of scratches on the bottom from the 24 years it’s been used but because it is carbon fiber on the outside and has a gel coat, I’m not going re-coat that. It’s handled the scratches really well. But the Kevlar (especially if the canoe is showing fabric) needs the extra love and protection.
PS) Burn your rags in an old coffee can when you are done. Do not throw them in the trash. They can catch on fire spontaneously.

Introduction:

I'm writing this tutorial to accommodate beginners and experienced users alike. If you would like to skip the introductory part and get right to the point, just look for the chapter entitled “My list of the best Plex Server devices”.
Next, I ask the subreddit admins not to remove this post and move it to the Builds megatread; have mercy.
Note: further down the line, I will refer to Plex Media Server as Plex Server and Plex Client Apps as Plex Client(s).

Plex Server vs Plex Client Overview:

When we talk about Plex, we cannot talk about the Plex Server without also talking about the Plex Clients. Both sides are equally important. However, they serve different purposes.
​

• Plex Server: This is the server component of Plex. It organizes and streams your videos, audio files, and photos from your computer or online sources to your client applications. The server software is available on various platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, certain models of NAS devices; heck, even Raspberry Pi can run Plex Server. Once installed, it catalogs your media, fetches metadata from the internet to provide additional information about your media such as cover art, summaries, ratings, etc. It also has the capability to transcode (convert on-the-fly) your media to a format that is compatible with the client device you're streaming to, making it very versatile.Finally, what makes a good Plex server is its ability to hardware transcode media content in as many streams as possible.That's what we're trying to do as cheaply as possible. Find more about the transcoding process here and know it by heart, it will be important later.

• Plex Clients: These are the applications you use to access your Plex Media Server. They can be installed on various devices like smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices (AppleTV, Nvidia Shield Pro, Roku, Amazon Fire TV Cube, etc.), gaming consoles, web browsers, and even desktop PCs. These clients fetch the content from the Plex Media Server and display it to the user. They allow you to stream your content, browse your libraries, create playlists, etc. Each Plex Client has a different set of supported video/audio codecs (formats). Why different set? Codec support depends on the underlying hardware, for example, the Nvidia Shield Pro will have a different set of supported video/audio codecs than the Amazon Fire TV Stick or LG Smart TV

To illustrate, if you install Plex Media Server on your home computer, and then install the Plex app on your smartphone, you could stream movies stored on your computer to your smartphone. The computer with the server software would be considered the Plex Server, and the smartphone with the app would be the Plex Client. The Plex Server does the heavy lifting (like file conversion) so the Plex Client(s) can have an optimized viewing or listening experience.
To summarize, when we talk about Plex Clients, we are primarily talking about price and supported video/audio codecs (formats). The logic here is that the more expensive the client, the more audio/video codecs it supports.On the other hand, when we talk about the Plex servers, we talk primarily about price and performance (power).
Similar to Plex Clients, the more expensive the Plex Server, the more powerful it will typically be. This relationship is not always straight forward and we will talk more about this later.

Simple Plex Setup

The simplest Plex setup would be one Plex Server and one Plex client.
The simplest Plex setup is also a perfect Plex setup. If you only have one Plex Client, you can customize your audio/video media to perfectly match the codec(s) supported by that Plex Client. In such a setup, Plex Server will never need to do any transcoding because Plex Client will also play fully supported media formats.
If your Plex server is never used for transcoding, then a Raspberry Pi can also be used as a good Plex server.
If this is the case, why is hardly anyone talking about using Raspberry Pi as a Plex Server at all? Because what I call a simple and perfect Plex setup is just wishful thinking. We, end users, we always connect more then one Plex Client.

Realistic Plex Setup

A more realistic setup may include many different Plex Clients, like Plex Web Client, Plex TV Client, Plex Mobile/Table Client, and more frequently, Plex clients for the streaming box devices.
Now remember, even if your current Plex Client device fully supports your media content, if you add another Plex Client device, it may or may not have the same codec (video/audio) support. Thus you may encounter the need for transcoding. This is no longer a simply process and devices like Raspberyy Pi will not be able to handle transcoding tasks.
This is the root of our problem and the main reason for this article. You should expect that some of your media files will require transcoding, and for video transcoding you need a machine capable enough of handling this process. More importantly, you want a machine that can hardware transcode your content, which means your Plex Server must have a dedicated hardware transcoding component. Likewise, there's a software transcoding process that requires pure CPU power, but you would be lucky to get 1-2 4K transcoding streams with modern Intel i7 or i9 CPUs. We want to avoid software transcoding, as hardware transcoding can do much more for a fraction of the power of software transcoding. For example, a 10th generation Intel i7 CPU can handle one 4K software transcoding task or 10+ 4K hardware transcoding tasks; that’s a huge difference.
And before anyone comments, yes, we could make sure we only stream video/audio files that are fully (mostly) supported by all Plex Clients, but that would limit us in size, quality, and most importantly, the time it takes to make sure all the files meet the exact video/audio requirements.

Understanding Plex Server Requirements

Okay, so we've got a good handle on the importance of Plex Servers, what Plex HW transcoding is and why it's important. But now you might be asking, 'What do I need to make sure my Plex server can handle all this HW transcoding business?' Great question! Let's dive into that.Remember, your Plex server is the heart of your Plex ecosystem. It's where all your media lives, and it's the place that's doing all the hard work when it comes to streaming to your devices.When it comes to Plex server requirements, there are four main things to consider: CPU, GPU, power consumption, and storage.
​

• First, the CPU. The CPU is probably the most important component for HW transcoding, and when we talk about the CPUs we will primarily talk about the Intel-based CPUs with integrated GPUs (to be more precise, QuickSync-enabled iGPUs). Yes, AMD CPUs and Apple M1/M2 CPUs can also handle HW transcoding tasks, but AMD CPUs are not officially supported and Apple CPUs or Apple hardware in general are not cheap.Overall, Intel CPUs with QuickSync iGPUs provide a dedicated hardware solution for efficient and accelerated video transcoding, making them highly valuable for Plex servers that require hardware transcoding capabilities.The newer the Intel CPU generation, the better the QuickSync technology is likely to be for Plex hardware transcoding. The advancements in each generation have brought improvements in performance, quality, codec support, and energy efficiency, enabling more efficient and higher-quality hardware transcoding experiences on newer CPUs. Any 7th generation or newer Intel CPU with iGPU will be able to HW transcode both H.264 and H.265 video codecs (more or less 99% of today's modern video media). 10th generation of Intel CPUs have even better performance with H.264 and H.265 video encoding/decoding. Intel CPUs with iGPU, 12th generation or above is required if you require hardware AV1 video codec support.Finally, do not use Intel CPUs whos version name ends with F; they lack iGPU.In summary, CPUs are important because they provide excellent HW transcoding performance at low power consumption.

• Second, the GPU. The GPU is probably as important as the CPU, and in some cases more important, and when we talk about GPUs we will primarily talk about Nvidia GPUs as they are officialy supported by the Plex team.NVIDIA GPUs are important for Plex hardware transcoding due to their dedicated video encoding/decoding units, superior performance, wide codec support, improved video quality, reduced CPU load, power efficiency. They offer a powerful hardware acceleration solution that can greatly enhance the transcoding capabilities of a Plex server. It's also important to note that Nvidia GPUs require a patch to unlock the number of HW transcoding streams.Dedicated GPUs are large pieces of hardware and have their place in desktop PCs. However, they can also be used with mini-PCs by using an external GPU enclosure.

• Third, power consumption. Plex Server will run 24/7 as a general rule. The larger the device used for Plex Server, the more power it will consume. Usually. Desktop PCs consume more power than NAS devices, which consume more power than mini PCs paired with NVME drives.

​

• Fourth, Storage. Each Plex Server requires dedicated media storage. Desktop PCs and NAS devices have enough space for several HDDs, while mini PCs require external storage like DAS (or even NAS devices). Although, mini PCs can avoid external storage with NVME drives (expensive approach, but small enough for mini PC integration).

To summarize, we’re looking for:

• Mini PCs with any Intel-based CPU based on QuickSync-enabled iGPU.
• Desktop PC with Intel-based CPU based on QuickSync-enabled iGPU
• Desktop PC with any AMD CPU as long it runs Nvidia-based GPU (minimum GTX 1050 or bettenewer)
• Intel-based NAS (Synology, QNAP ....) as long Intel-based CPU is based on QuickSync-enabled iGPU (even Celerons will do)
• Intel-based Apple Mac Mini or M1/M2 Mac Mini if available

  • Power Consumption: Large desktop and gaming computers use between 200 and 500 watts of electricity on average. Using a computer for 8 hours per day will use about 12.2 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month and 146 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year​ (This is not my calculation so I may update it over time).
  • Cost: Desktop PCs are typically the most expensive setup due to component costs and high power consumption over time.
  • Performance: Desktop PCs in general offer the best performance and quality if paired with dedicated GPUs

• Mini PC
  • Power Consumption: A basic Intel NUC, a type of mini PC, will use around 30 watt-hours per hour, or 0.03 kilowatt-hours per hour. A high-end model will use more, up to around 0.5 kilowatt-hours per hour on average​.
  • Cost: Mini PCs are usually the most cost-effective devices if paired with NVME drives. This is somewhat blured if external DAS storage is used, or worse if NAS devices are used for strage.
  • Performance: Excluding dedicated GPU, Mini PCs offer similar if not identical performance to their bigger desktop PC siblings.

• NAS (e.g., Synology)
  • Power Consumption: Power consumption for a Synology NAS device like the DS1621+ is not specified in terms of watts, but it's generally understood to be quite low, as these devices are designed to be energy-efficient.
  • Cost: Depending on a setup, running NAS as a Plex Server and storage can also be a good cost-effective alternative
  • Performance: Usually the less powerful compared to desktop PCs and mini PCs. Still powerful enough to run multiple 4K HW transcodings thanks to the QuickSync-based Intel CPU.

• Intel NUC Mini PCs:

Intel NUC mini PCs are often favored as Plex servers for several reasons. First, they offer relatively high-performance processors and support for more RAM compared to less expensive mini PCs like Beelink, allowing for smoother streaming and transcoding on Plex. Second, the build quality and reliability of Intel NUCs are generally regarded as superior. Third, Intel NUCs have good support for various operating systems, including those commonly used for servers. While other mini PCs can be cheaper, they may not offer the same level of performance and compatibility, which can affect the smooth running of a Plex server.

• Beelink/Minisforum Mini PCs:

To put it bluntly, when compared to Intel NUC, Beelink or MINISFORUM Mini PCs provide a similar performance at a potentially lower price point, yet still somewhat superior in quality to other cheap mini PCs from China. I'm a little split on recommending these devices; while I've never had any problems, I know some people who have. Personally I would go with Intel NUC just based on its reliability, but cheaper is cheaper.Last piece of advice, both Beelink or Minisforum come with pretty mediocre SSDs/NVMEs and RAM, and it's better (and even cheaper) to buy everything separately (barebone).

Any Dell Optiplex with at least 7th gen Intel CPU. I can say that many users often choose Dell Optiplex computers due to their robustness, reliability, and most important affordability. They come with a variety of configurations that can be customized to suit the needs of a Plex server, such as good processing power, ample memory, and storage. Additionally, their size makes them a practical choice for Plex.

• Synology DS423+, Synology DS920+, QNAP TS-453be NAS’

Intel-based NAS devices are also preferred as good Plex servers for several reasons. You get all-in-one package with power-efficient 4K HW transcoding, built-in storage, and Linux-based OS.

Synology DS920 - Deprecated but still a fan-favorite. DS923+ switched to AMD-based CPU without iGPU so it should not be considered as a Plex Server.
QNAP TS-464 - $589 (Intel N5105 Celeron + 11th gen iGPU with 8GB DDR4)

• Any custom-made Desktop PC

While custom-made desktop PCs are not my favorite option, I cannot justify not giving them a shout out here. Yes, they are big, noisy, and power hungry, but when it comes down to it, they can serve as a Plex server just as well as any mini PC. Just make sure you’re either running at least Intel 7th gen CPU (although some modern AMD CPUs will also do) or older CPU paired with at least Nvidia RTX 1050 GPU or newer.

• Mac Mini (Intel or Arm-based)

Mac has always been known to handle Plex Server very well.Older Intel-based Mac Minis are on the same level as Mini PCs, so what applies to Mini PCs also applies to Intel-based Mac Minis.On the other hand, even though M1 and M2 Macs are Arm-based, they offer excellent value for HW transcoding tasks. Both M1 and M2 are overkill for a Plex server and the only reason they are not higher on this chart is their price.

When I hit TCP/443-HTTPS on the external IP via DNS it presents me with the the ER7206 login page stating "Note: This Gateway is being managed by Omada Controller 192.168.10.2"
But if I change the port to :4444 (Sophos UTM port)...... same IP/URL it allows the traffic to flow and hit the Sophos UTM.
I'd like the 443 page to display a web page hosted at home, -vs- the ER7206 taking over showing its login page.

I apologise to those who I have let down by not answering these questions. I have been rather busy, as some may have figured by my resignation as First Minister of Wales. I am now able to answer, and will do my best below.

Would the minister address whether this Government has plans for supporting the transition to greener shipping?

While I do not currently have plans to do this, I can of course work with the member to do so. Shipping as of now relies on fossil fuels, but i’m sure that scotland can work on this with the other members of the government

Would the minister support the introduction of licensing for carriers transporting fuels within Scottish ports?

I would support this and would be happy to work with the honourable member in doing so

Would the Government work to adopt similar global emission caps on vessels registered and partaking in activities in Scotland?

I am sure that we will be able to achieve this, as reducing emissions is always at the forefront of my policies

Does the government have plans to improve the regulatory framework surrounding the operations of ports in Scotland?

At this moment in time, I do not have such plans. Should this matter need a response, I will provide one

Could the Minister confirm whether this Government would support increased high speed rail connections between Scotland and the rest of the UK?

Personally, I would support this project, however this would come at a great cost to the taxpayer. I of course reside over Transport issues in Westminster also, and so have had a look at this before

As the Cabinet Secretary will no doubt be aware, the entirety of Scotland's trunk road system is the responsibility of the Scottish Government. The M8 through Glasgow is due to have a temporary 40mph speed reductions brought in between junction 25 & 25a and given that the M8 at this point is going through a built up area, would the Secretary consider making this speed restriction permanent, in the interest of promoting better urban air quality?

A review will be made into the feasibility of keeping these restrictions, however they will remain temporary for the time being

I asked the First Minister what he is doing about arranging a temporary provision for the currently out-of-action Corran Ferry which is essential to keeping local businesses running. Lacking an answer from them, I will direct the same question to the Transport Secretary. What are they doing to resolve this problem, and have they considered approaching the MoD for military assistance?

Military assistance will not be needed in this case. A replacement for the ferry would be far more suitable, and I can provide this in due course

Will the infrastructure strategy proposed in the PfG be completed this term?

It is likely that not all parts of the expected progress in my department will be made this term. Time constraints and other issues have led to this. They will of course be completed as soon as I am able

Does the Cabinet Secretary support the expansion of the Railways (Electrification) Act to Scotland?

Yes, I do. Electrification is our best way forward

How will the government improve transport access for rural and island communities?

As I have done in Wales, I will be encouraging the expansion of local transport networks, such as buses and small rail lines

Does the government have any prevailing plans in relation to the extension of high speed rail to Scotland?

Please see my answer above. This would be a great cost as of now, but I will continue to assess the feasibility

I would like to raise a crucial issue in Scotland to the Cabinet Secretary. In Scotland, on the A93, landslides can occur and block crucial access to roads and transport links. How will the government resolve to reach a solution to this evident ecological and isolationary issue?

This is not an ideal situation to face, however a more permanent solution must be found. I will be assessing the possibility of creating a new route for vehicles to use in the event of such incidents on the A93

Would the transport secretary agree with me that there is a case for a car ferry service between Helensburgh and Greenock, avoiding a 50 minute, 33 mile car journey?

I would agree with the member. Cutting journey lengths also cuts emissions, and so I would be happy to work with the member on rectifying this

What new projects are being developed to support commuter towns like Bathgate, in particular young professionals who commute into Edinburgh or Glasgow?

The expansion of scottish bus networks is something I would like to see, and so an increased investment into public transport will be my solution for this

The new government has continued to make promises regarding introducing cheaper fares for public transport across the country. In the Programme for Government, a general term of 'reform' is used, alongside discussions of free travel for under 18s and smartcard access. To ask the Secretary what those reform plans mean in detail?

These plans have since been released, and so the member can refer to the new legislation put forward by the First Minister

I would like to draw members attention to the dire state of road quality and safety in Scotland. In Edinburgh as an example, roads have deteriorated to such a state that not even pedestrian areas remain stable. It is imperative that the issue of potholes and other hazards are properly handled. So I therefore ask, how will this government ensure local governments properly manage this?

I will be increasing funding for the repaving and fixing of roads that are deemed to be unsafe for either road users or pedestrians. Local governments will receive a chunk of money to use specifically for fixing their lowest quality roads.

How much is the Government’s plans for lower fares and price caps costing the Scottish Treasury please, do they believe that money is being spent well?

I would like to remind the member that I am not the finance minister and so do not have the specific costings. This money is of course being spent well, as with all of this government’s projects

Has the Government recently assessed the suitability of the bus network across Scotland, and if so what are they doing about it? Have they been working with local authorities, and if so which ones?

I have assessed this issue. Bus networks need expanding and at a rapid rate, both to reduce emissions and to take more cars off of the road. I can update the member on the full details on a later date

What steps has the Transport Minister taken this term to increase the speed of our transition to a wholly green transport network?

As i have in Wales, I will be ensuring the full transition to electric buses and vehicles in the next 20 years. I hope this answer satisfies the member

Has the Transport Minister undertaken any work on coast paths and cycle routes this term, to support our move to a low carbon nation? If so, what exactly has been done?

I have not currently done so, however I can promise the member that work will be made on this

A major factor in accessibility to rail services especially in rural areas is the ability to access a bus link to the rail station, with a timetable that meets the train services. For many of my constituents, and of course many across Scotland, whether there is a suitable bus link to their nearest station can make the difference between using the train or driving their car and contributing to congestion and pollution. To ask the Secretary what steps they are taking to ensure as many residents as possible are linked with appropriate bus connections to their nearest train service? Most people in Scotland already have this connection available. If the member would like to inform me of the places where this is not possible, please reach out to me and I will find a solution with the local authority
Would Transport Scotland/Còmhdhail Alba consider a trial of new transport technologies such as responsive transport in rural and island communities like mine?

I would be happy to trail such technologies, as they will eventually be the future of rural transport

To ask the Secretary what they see the future of the port at Cairnryan and how it fits in with the rest of Scotland's transport network?

As of now, I have no plans for adapting or changing this port

Does the Cabinet Secretary agree that the Edinburgh Suburban Line should be reopened, potentially as a tram-train, to serve the good people of Gorgie, Craiglockhart, Morningside, Blackford, Newington, Duddingston, Craigmillar, Brunstane, Portobello, Piershill, and Abbeyhill, and to allow them to avoid the traffic of central Edinburgh?

I can certainly see why the member wishes to reopen the Edinburgh Suburban Line. I will support this while in office

Does the Cabinet Secretary agree that we should explore turning Scotland's urban motorways into boulevards, or perhaps even axe them?

No. This would make traffic far worse and would benefit almost nobody

What has this government done, and what will it do, for active travel?

As mentioned by other members the motorways through the heart of the Glasgow city centre have had extreme speed restrictions placed on them. Walking through Glasgow around Charing Cross, you can see traffic backed up for as far as you can see. Obviously this is not how a motorway should function. To ask the Secretary if they consider the extension of motorways through Glasgow centre decades ago, in hindsight, a failure and mis-step in planning?

Perhaps it was. Traffic congestion is a severe issue in Scotland, and this government will work to fix this

To ask the Secretary how they believe links to the Islands, including via ferries, can be improved?

The islands are a unique situation, where not much else other than more ferries can fix transport links. The only thing I would be able to do is increase the frequency in ferry services through subsidies

The West Highland Line is at risk of disruption from rock fall due to its position in the terrain. Furthermore, indication of such an event is only provided by a decades old wiring system that is maintained by bodges upon bodges. To ask the Secretary if they will commit to improving safety on the line by looking into new technologies in this area?

New technologies will not fix this issue. Scotland has a rugged terrain, and there is little this government can do about it.

Hi a few minutes ago i stumbled upon a $100 Series X on marketplace, thought it was too good to be true but it turns out the HDMI port is just broken and the owner doesn’t know how to fix. Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros.

Review:
The classic Platformer, Super Mario Bros. (not to be confused with Mario Bros.), was originally released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, and would later go on to be ported to almost every major Nintendo platform in some form or another. The game received a port to Arcades as well in 1986, though this wasn’t exactly the same game that we received on home consoles. Rather, VS. Super Mario Bros. was a slightly-altered version of the classic game, with changes made to the game to add in greater difficulty.
These changes are fairly minor - a few power-up blocks have been changed or removed, some stages have been swapped around, and more challenging versions of stages appear in place of the earlier ones. I won’t go into a detailed list. Suffice it to say that this is almost exactly the same game as the classic Super Mario Bros. we all have seen countless times before, save for a few differences sprinkled throughout the game.
For those who have somehow missed the original Super Mario Bros., that is one impressive rock you’ve been hiding under. However, for the sake of being comprehensive, this game is a classic of the Platforming genre, and one that virtually all Platformers since owe much of their existence to. Without this game, there very likely would be no Sonic, no Crash Bandicoot, no Spyro, no Castlevania, no Mega Man... in fact, there may very well be no Nintendo, at least as we know it today. What's more, after the Atari Crash of 1983, the videogame industry as a whole simply would not exist as it does now if not for the rejuvenating effect that this game had on the entire medium. Super Mario Bros. is, without question, one of the most important videogames ever made, if not the most important videogame ever made.
This is not just due to being one of the first games in the genre, nor for being a quality game at a time when the videogame industry really needed a winner to revive the market, nor for innovating design in countless areas from screen scrolling to power-up systems. The original Super Mario Bros. still holds up surprisingly well even today, though of course it pales next to more modern entries in the series. The game design here is superb, the physics are excellent (though still rough compared to later Mario games), the pixel art visuals are iconic, the game’s chiptune themes are some of the most memorable tunes ever seen in a videogame. Even to this day, Super Mario Bros. is still one of the greatest videogames ever made, even if it has been eclipsed by its later sequels.
This release of the game, as a part of Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives series, gives players a decent array of options, including various display options, sound options, challenge modifiers, button mapping, and online leaderboards. There is also a new “Hi-Score Mode” (for the aforementioned leaderboards), that challenges players to make as many points as they can on one life. There is also a new “Caravan Mode” that does much the same, but with the limit being five minutes rather than one life.
So there are only two remaining elephants in the room to discuss. First: Is this game worth its $8 price tag? And second, is it worth buying if you already subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, which includes a version of this game on its Nintendo Entertainment System app. To be perfectly honest... no, I don’t think so, at least not for most people. The changes to the “VS” version of the game aren’t enough to really set this game apart and make it feel like a different game, but they are enough to frustrate the muscle memory of players who are used to the NES version of the game. What’s more, in prior Virtual Console releases of this game, the price was set at $5, making the $8 price tag here seem like gouging. Finally, with the NES version of the game already on Nintendo Switch Online, the only reason to buy this game is if you aren’t subscribed to that service, or prefer to own outright the classic games on your Switch, and don’t mind that this isn’t quite the version of the game you may be familiar with... or if you’re a collector or completionist who only wants this game as a fun little curiosity rather than an actual game.
Either way, despite being mostly the same game as one of the greatest videogames of all time, it’s hard for me to give this release a full-hearted recommendation. Arcade Archives VS Super Mario Bros.is a decent enough port of the Arcade game it’s based on, but that game is a frustratingly-altered port of the classic Platformer it is based on, and the combination of a high price tag and the original version of the game being available on Nintendo Switch Online remove most of the reason anyone would buy this.
tl;dr – Super Mario Bros. is an absolute classic Platformer, and VS. Super Mario Bros. is a version of the game that’s altered just enough to be frustrating without changing enough to make it feel truly new. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of Super Mario Bros. being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still a great game, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying.

In 1991, the idea of a Muslim-majority state within the USA that allied itself with the USA and protected North American Muslims from hate crimes, Riba, Haram things, and sectarian violence was born. It was based on the legend of Qarser, that there was once an ancient Live Oak tree somewhere on the Virginia Peninsula but the tips of the leaves had a V-shaped indentation, rather than protrusion like any other Live Oak tree, making it a tree which bore heart-shaped leaves. The Native Americans met with Muslims from West Africa to trade under this rare tree with the beautiful leaf mutations. When the White settlers came, the Native Americans and West-African Muslims fled or were pushed out West and their unwritten history and culture was destroyed and the tree was cut down. This legend has a few variations and is used as a justification for the Virginia Peninsula being the specific location of an independent Muslim micronation. Qarsherskiyan nationalists still tell this tale today. The movement for an independent Muslim country had few supporters and many critics and locals chased off any Muslims who tried to buy land in the area. Ultimately the plan failed but was written down and recording in several notebooks and diaries which were hidden in the walls of a few houses in Virginia and Ohio belonging to members of the former movement. As time when on, the houses needed renovations and the notebooks discussing the plan and its reasoning and failures and successes were found. In 2005, a boy named Brennan White was born in London, Ohio and began growing into a very interesting kid, with unusually fast rate of maturity, able to speak full sentences before being one year old and walking by one years of age as well, according to his grandmother who raised him until we was about 3 years old. Brennan studied horticulture lessons for children at only age 3 and could explain how to create hybrids of trees and name and identify various plants and animals at age 4. By 2019, American teenagers and pre-teens from Muslim-American backgrounds found these notebooks after homeowners in the area did as the notebooks instructed and handed it to someone from the local Islamic community upon being found. It was the Powerplant Group, a powerful conglomeration of groups of kids and teenagers from Ohio, West Virginia, and Ohio named for their love of Urbex adventures and previous explorations of abandoned powerplants and cooling towers. In the same year, 2019, one female member named Powerplant 'Aisha based in Vermilion and Lorain in the state of Ohio got hold of all the notebooks and took particular interest, announcing the re-formation of the Muslim state in the USA and never officially naming it but calling it several names including Qarsherskiy. Nearby, on East 21st Street, Lorain, Ohio, USA, Brennan White had slowly matured over the years researching geography, religion, language, horticulture and botany, entomology, and science to INCREDIBLY OBSESSIVE levels for over a decade. He was particularly fascinated by Wicca and Black Magick but by fall of 2020 his shift had focused to Indian and South Asian societies a bit more, as well as Chinese and Hispanic traditions. In 2020, Powerplant 'Aisha and the Powerplant Group consolidated power over the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy although it still wasn't officially named that and hadn't declared independence. They began working with Brennan to make up a non-existent Island-Nation online called Aleialei Atoll in order to trick people online into believing a small, rich Pacific island nation existed and needed their help. It wasn't a scam but a ploy targeting the enemies of Qarsherskiy solely to lead them down an internet rabbit-hole and waste their time, distracting the enemies of Qarsherskiy from spreading slander online. Thousands of footage and images of beautiful beaches around the world were uploaded by over 30 members of the powerplant group all across social media and labelled as ''Aleialei Atoll" while lore, culture, and history of Aleialei Atoll was made up and posted online. Anyone who slandered Qarsherskiy or the powerplant group online would be directed to research Aleialei Atoll with some vague statement about the place and suddenly hours of researching the mysterious and unknown "country" would ensue. By sping of 2021, Aleialei Atoll had been exposed and the powerplant group hired hackers to take down 99.7% of all content related to the project from the internet. A new fictional nation called Bahariterra was made up in Spring of 2021 and an average of 250 YouTube videos a week went up. Any time any of the 30+ members of the Powerplant Group saw food, palm trees, beaches, or something interesting from a foreign culture, it was uploaded online as something from "Bahariterra" and before long thousands of hours of content a week went up and long paragraphs of information on various websites misled Qarsherskiy's online slanderers down a new rabbit-hole. By the end of 2021, Brennan's family began preparations to move to Newport News, Virginia, officially leaving Lorain, Ohio on 1st January 2022, and arriving late at night to a hotel in (downtown?) Newport News. the next morning, 2nd January 2022, Brennan and his family had settled in a new home and were finishing putting luggage away. After a year of Brennan exploring the area with his local friends, obsessing over the last few hundred years of history in the area, and meeting people who would convert to Islam or were already Muslims, Brennan learned in late December of 2022 of local neo-Nazi groups called Bombenfein who spoke a Germanic conlang and believed in an esoteric radical re-interpretation of Christianity that favoured Whites and sought to kill racial and religious minorities, Brennan knew it was a matter of time before the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy would declare independence, especially when police continuously failed to protect the freedom and safety of many local American Muslims and other minorities. Despite not having access to the internet at the time due to being in trouble with his family, Brennan secretly began getting his friend to represent him online and spread a message of his bravery and good leadership and plans for Qarsherskiy. Qarsherskiy would be a sultanate but if the sultan leaves no successor or if people dislike him and overthrow him, Qarsherskiyan law states the new sultan and their royal family gets elected into power by the people's choice and votes. Brennan began pushing his campaign and became the sultan of Qarsherskiy. On 28 March 2023, Qarsherskiy elected the first Emir and Sultan and declared its independence. Brennan became the sultan, Ali Aq-Qarsherskiyy At-Tariq AL-Akbar, and instantly opposed neo-Nazi threats to Qarsherskiy, helping his micronation of 1,947 people called Qarsherskiy in a two month struggle against Neo-Nazism known as the PondWater Neo-Nazi Wars, which ended in the Battle of BasaraQ exactly 2 months later on 28 May 2023 with Sultan Ali's victorious army praising his leadership. Qarsherskiy and its nearly 2,000 citizens then nearly had a Sunni-Shi'a Civil War which was put down peacefully by the sultan Ali. From 31 March 2023 to 3 June 2023, several attempts by the mere 17 Alawites in Qarsherskiy to overthrow and take over the government of Qarsherskiy failed. Qarsherskiy than began a healing process after its first two months were lived in chaos.

The classic Arcade-style Platformer, Donkey Kong, was originally released in Arcades in 1981, and would later go on to be ported to almost every major Nintendo platform in some form or another. However, most later ports featured a changed version of the game, with slightly-altered visuals and sound, and even missing one of the game’s four stages, the cement factory stage. This release of the game, a part of Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives series, is one of only a select few home console ports of the game to be truly accurate to the arcade game.

However, for the sake of being comprehensive, this game is a classic of the Platforming genre, where the titular ape has kidnapped a helpless damsel named Pauline, who must be rescued by the plucky carpenter (yes, carpenter) Mario, who must climb various structures to reach Pauline at the top while avoiding hazards along the way.
It bears mention that this game’s success is something that Nintendo owes its entire videogame empire to. Donkey Kong was not Nintendo’s first videogame, but without Donkey Kong, there would very likely be no Nintendo today (or at the very least, Nintendo may well have shuttered its videogame development and stuck with the simple toys and playing cards they were known for making prior to their work on videogames).
The original Donkey Kong is not just the first appearance of the titular ape, but also the first appearance of Mario, amusingly named Jumpman in the Japanese release of the game and only getting the name Mario upon the game’s release in America. While this was not technically the first Platformer (it is preceded by the games Space Panic and Crazy Climber), it was the first one to include jumping as a primary game mechanic, making this game the grandfather of pretty much every Platformer ever made.
Its claim to fame isn’t just being the first, though. Donkey Kong still to this day has incredibly iconic pixel art visuals and chiptune sound design (though both differ slightly from the Nintendo Entertainment System port of the game that Nintendo has usually favored when porting the game to other platforms), and the level design here is superb as well.
Having said that, we are talking about a videogame that’s over 40 years old, and it definitely shows its age considerably. The controls are stiff and at times seemingly unresponsive. The physics are extremely unforgiving, with poor Mario dying from falls of just a few feet. And the game’s extremely short length and infinite repetition really limit the game’s appeal with modern audiences who may be shocked to find that they can see everything the game has to offer within the span of five minutes. Still, both as a history lesson and a nostalgia trip, Donkey Kong is at the very least a very enjoyable five minutes.
This release of the game is surprisingly comprehensive in that it includes three versions of the game - an “Early Version”, a “Later Version” that featured some minor changes, and an “International Version” that changed the stage order. I suppose this isn’t an absolutely comprehensive collection of all versions of the game, since the Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game, the Game & Watch version of the game, and the far, far superior Game Boy version are all absent here, but I suppose none of those would really fit the “Arcade Archives” product line. There is also a new “Hi-Score Mode” that challenges players to make as many points as they can on one life. There is also a new “Caravan Mode” that does much the same, but with the limit being five minutes rather than one life. In addition, this release of the game gives players a decent array of options, including various display options, sound options, challenge modifiers, button mapping, and online leaderboards.
So there are only two remaining elephants in the room to discuss. First: Is this game worth its $8 price tag? And second, is it worth buying if you already subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, which includes a version of this game on its Nintendo Entertainment System app. The latter question is easier to answer, as the butchering of the NES version of the game makes this release clearly superior to the one that came on Nintendo Switch Online. However, that $8 price tag seems steep for a game that’s over 40 years old. One can argue that this being a rare opportunity to own the game on a home console might help justify that price, but... we’re still talking about a dated game that you can complete in five minutes.
Despite that this is the best version of Donkey Kong available on the Nintendo Switch (at least until the Game Boy version gets added to the Nintendo Switch Online app), I simply cannot see it being with the price for anyone except the most diehard of Nintendo fans, collectors, and completionists. This is one of the most important videogames ever made, but it has aged quite a bit, and while the Nintendo Entertainment System app’s version of the game is clearly inferior, it should be sufficient enough for most players looking to experience the game.
tl;dr – Donkey Kong is an absolute classic Arcade-style Platformer, albeit one that definitely shows its age, and most modern players won’t be eager to buy a game you can complete in five minutes. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of the game being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still one of the most important videogames ever made, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying.

In 1991, the idea of a Muslim-majority state within the USA that allied itself with the USA and protected North American Muslims from hate crimes, Riba, Haram things, and sectarian violence was born. It was based on the legend of Qarser, that there was once an ancient Live Oak tree somewhere on the Virginia Peninsula but the tips of the leaves had a V-shaped indentation, rather than protrusion like any other Live Oak tree, making it a tree which bore heart-shaped leaves. The Native Americans met with Muslims from West Africa to trade under this rare tree with the beautiful leaf mutations. When the White settlers came, the Native Americans and West-African Muslims fled or were pushed out West and their unwritten history and culture was destroyed and the tree was cut down. This legend has a few variations and is used as a justification for the Virginia Peninsula being the specific location of an independent Muslim micronation. Qarsherskiyan nationalists still tell this tale today. The movement for an independent Muslim country had few supporters and many critics and locals chased off any Muslims who tried to buy land in the area. Ultimately the plan failed but was written down and recording in several notebooks and diaries which were hidden in the walls of a few houses in Virginia and Ohio belonging to members of the former movement. As time when on, the houses needed renovations and the notebooks discussing the plan and its reasoning and failures and successes were found. In 2005, a boy named Brennan White was born in London, Ohio and began growing into a very interesting kid, with unusually fast rate of maturity, able to speak full sentences before being one year old and walking by one years of age as well, according to his grandmother who raised him until we was about 3 years old. Brennan studied horticulture lessons for children at only age 3 and could explain how to create hybrids of trees and name and identify various plants and animals at age 4. By 2019, American teenagers and pre-teens from Muslim-American backgrounds found these notebooks after homeowners in the area did as the notebooks instructed and handed it to someone from the local Islamic community upon being found. It was the Powerplant Group, a powerful conglomeration of groups of kids and teenagers from Ohio, West Virginia, and Ohio named for their love of Urbex adventures and previous explorations of abandoned powerplants and cooling towers. In the same year, 2019, one female member named Powerplant 'Aisha based in Vermilion and Lorain in the state of Ohio got hold of all the notebooks and took particular interest, announcing the re-formation of the Muslim state in the USA and never officially naming it but calling it several names including Qarsherskiy. Nearby, on East 21st Street, Lorain, Ohio, USA, Brennan White had slowly matured over the years researching geography, religion, language, horticulture and botany, entomology, and science to INCREDIBLY OBSESSIVE levels for over a decade. He was particularly fascinated by Wicca and Black Magick but by fall of 2020 his shift had focused to Indian and South Asian societies a bit more, as well as Chinese and Hispanic traditions. In 2020, Powerplant 'Aisha and the Powerplant Group consolidated power over the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy although it still wasn't officially named that and hadn't declared independence. They began working with Brennan to make up a non-existent Island-Nation online called Aleialei Atoll in order to trick people online into believing a small, rich Pacific island nation existed and needed their help. It wasn't a scam but a ploy targeting the enemies of Qarsherskiy solely to lead them down an internet rabbit-hole and waste their time, distracting the enemies of Qarsherskiy from spreading slander online. Thousands of footage and images of beautiful beaches around the world were uploaded by over 30 members of the powerplant group all across social media and labelled as ''Aleialei Atoll" while lore, culture, and history of Aleialei Atoll was made up and posted online. Anyone who slandered Qarsherskiy or the powerplant group online would be directed to research Aleialei Atoll with some vague statement about the place and suddenly hours of researching the mysterious and unknown "country" would ensue. By sping of 2021, Aleialei Atoll had been exposed and the powerplant group hired hackers to take down 99.7% of all content related to the project from the internet. A new fictional nation called Bahariterra was made up in Spring of 2021 and an average of 250 YouTube videos a week went up. Any time any of the 30+ members of the Powerplant Group saw food, palm trees, beaches, or something interesting from a foreign culture, it was uploaded online as something from "Bahariterra" and before long thousands of hours of content a week went up and long paragraphs of information on various websites misled Qarsherskiy's online slanderers down a new rabbit-hole. By the end of 2021, Brennan's family began preparations to move to Newport News, Virginia, officially leaving Lorain, Ohio on 1st January 2022, and arriving late at night to a hotel in (downtown?) Newport News. the next morning, 2nd January 2022, Brennan and his family had settled in a new home and were finishing putting luggage away. After a year of Brennan exploring the area with his local friends, obsessing over the last few hundred years of history in the area, and meeting people who would convert to Islam or were already Muslims, Brennan learned in late December of 2022 of local neo-Nazi groups called Bombenfein who spoke a Germanic conlang and believed in an esoteric radical re-interpretation of Christianity that favoured Whites and sought to kill racial and religious minorities, Brennan knew it was a matter of time before the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy would declare independence, especially when police continuously failed to protect the freedom and safety of many local American Muslims and other minorities. Despite not having access to the internet at the time due to being in trouble with his family, Brennan secretly began getting his friend to represent him online and spread a message of his bravery and good leadership and plans for Qarsherskiy. Qarsherskiy would be a sultanate but if the sultan leaves no successor or if people dislike him and overthrow him, Qarsherskiyan law states the new sultan and their royal family gets elected into power by the people's choice and votes. Brennan began pushing his campaign and became the sultan of Qarsherskiy. On 28 March 2023, Qarsherskiy elected the first Emir and Sultan and declared its independence. Brennan became the sultan, Ali Aq-Qarsherskiyy At-Tariq AL-Akbar, and instantly opposed neo-Nazi threats to Qarsherskiy, helping his micronation of 1,947 people called Qarsherskiy in a two month struggle against Neo-Nazism known as the PondWater Neo-Nazi Wars, which ended in the Battle of BasaraQ exactly 2 months later on 28 May 2023 with Sultan Ali's victorious army praising his leadership. Qarsherskiy and its nearly 2,000 citizens then nearly had a Sunni-Shi'a Civil War which was put down peacefully by the sultan Ali. From 31 March 2023 to 3 June 2023, several attempts by the mere 17 Alawites in Qarsherskiy to overthrow and take over the government of Qarsherskiy failed. Qarsherskiy than began a healing process after its first two months were lived in chaos.
