MBPro 2020- Replaced battery still doesn’t turn on

2023.03.29 07:53 schnabi_lite MBPro 2020- Replaced battery still doesn’t turn on

My MacBook Pro had the “battery needs service repair” warning for about 2 months and then one day it stopped charging altogether. I thought this would be an easy fix to replace the battery so I purchased one and did the repair myself, but it still won’t turn on. I left it on a charger over night and still won’t turn on. I’m not sure what other troubleshooting I can do. I am considering bringing it to an Apple Store, but would they even diagnose the problem or replace/repair it since it has a 3rd party battery now?

2023.03.29 07:46 buttbuttheadhead How do Ordinals Work?

How do Ordinals Work?
I’m a software engineer and I’ve long been extremely skeptical of crypto currency and Bitcoin, because as far as I can tell, the blockchain “technology” that underpins it can never scale to be anything meaningful. And since the foundations of this space are essentially nonexistent, it’s all guaranteed to be worthless.
Despite not being a fan of crypto, I still like to understand how it works. Partly incase there is something of value that I’m missing, and and partly so that I can explain to other people in my life why they should stay away from this stuff.
Recently, it seems like “ordinals” and “inscribing” has become the next big thing in Bitcoin land. I’m trying to figure out how they work, but I’m struggling to wade through all of the terminology.
From what I can tell, each “satoshi” is assigned a unique ID, and then something keeps track of the mappings between the satoshi and a digital file, and the process of creating this mapping is called “inscribing”. It would be a bit like using the serial numbers on dollar bills to create a database that tracks which dollar bill is associated with which digital file, and then whoever has possession of a specific bill “owns” all of the files associated with it.
The part that I’m not understanding yet is where does this mapping data live? Does it live in the Bitcoin blockchain? Or does some 3rd party keep track of it in a separate database? Also, where do the underlying digital files live? I’d imagine that it would be impossible to store the actual files in the Bitcoin blockchain since, blocks have a 4MB limit, which does not allow for a ton of monkey pictures, especially if it’s supposed to also record all regular financial transactions? If that’s true, that would imply that the files are stored by some 3rd party? If that’s the case, who are the 3rd parties storing everything?

2023.03.29 07:32 manvsracquet Something that’s bothering me

So assuming the party consisted of 100-300 people not a single person saw her drive into the lake? According to the AWP video her car was found near where the party took place. I’m not saying it’s murder but I cannot fathom that no one saw her drive into the lake. She was the very last person to leave?

2023.03.29 07:14 Illustrious-Side-515 My version of agoraphobia

I haven't had legit friends since I was 12. A few acquaintances through school and people who I avoided, but I never hung out with people outside. I was never invited to a party or someone's house. Which is a common issue for people here in this sub.
So I constantly get bored and want to go outside but it feels forced and mechanic without a justifiable reason to be there, therefore, the entirety of the outside world has been reduced to just a huge network of stores, working places and inaccessible or irrelevant locations.
Everything around me seems so artificial, like places designed for a specific purpose which is to buy or sell things, and being too long in such places (which is every place where I have no specific duty) feels like I'm just waiting for some form of authority like a cop or security guard to come ask me what I'm doing, or worse, get robbed. I even feel uncomfortable being by myself in public places.
I had spoken to a therapist about this issue I have with being in public that I had mistaken with agoraphobia before, but he hadn't paid much attention to it or social anxiety seemed more relevant. Anyway I'm not seeing him anymore.

2023.03.29 07:03 Ludosys Beta feedback from a QA professional dev - mostly UX notes/wishlist

TL;DR: Open Beta Feedback for Blizzard devs. Please upvote so they see it <3

Here are my notes on the Open Beta, consisting mainly of UX feedback and some bugs. For background, I have been embedded QA at a AAA studio and had a high focus on Player Experience. My purpose for posting this here is that I hope the devs will find it (we certainly perused Reddit for bugs at my studio). If you feel the need to comment/discuss, please stick to adding to the feedback instead of refuting it. Even if you disagree, this is still valid feedback from a certain type of player perspective. Please do upvote to ensure the devs find it. Thank you!
Overall this was a very positive experience and I am very excited to play the full game, but I do hope there are a few things that get addressed before then. This beta felt very polished but some of the UX things noted felt more unfinished.
These notes are mostly in the order of when I thought of them as I was playing through. There is a section at the end for praise (positive feedback).
Scenario: I played on PS5. I started one of each class and played until reaching Kyovashad or slightly further, and played a Sorcerer to level 25 and the end of the campaign content. I did some of this in networked co-op with one other player, and the rest solo.
Feedback Notes:
I feel like Evade and teleport cooldowns should be half as much as they are. (later found boots that can reduce cooldowns or add more charges, this feel like a step in the right direction).
Need a quicker way to teleport to another player in your party without going to town first. Interact wheel? Map? If it exists, I couldn't figure it out. Appreciated the ability to travel directly to a waypoint from anywhere though. Maybe the player marker on map can act as a waypoint.
Potion upgrade crafting feels wholly unnecessary. Feels like crafting only for the sake of having crafting. No value add. The friction for crafting mats is so minor and only punishes those who have never picked up any crafting mats. Basically if you have mats, you just press the button and now your potion heals you more. No step to go out and seek the materials. The main friction is your character level. Why not just have it automatically increase with each level? Or keep the D3 system where it heals for a percentage of your health. I'm level 20 and already have enough materials to nearly upgrade every tier of the potions up to 90. The materials have no bearing. And I collect them passively, may as well just be gold, or nothing at all.
Want to assign melee button to a skill slot. Wanna go back to my stabby-stabby rogue. Once you spend your first ability point, you cannot go back to just using your weapon. Have unequipped slot act as a melee? Or have melee be an option for assignment? My party partner was so frustrated by this and spent a half hour trying to get it to work and ended up quitting.
Why can't I remap my skills to other buttons from the beginning? I want to have my primary attack on the right trigger, but have to use X and then wait til I'm level 10 to remap it, at which point I have to retrain my muscle memory again.
It'd be nice to have the option to tune the PS5 controller's trigger threshold for an attack. I have to pull the trigger all the way to use my skill but it'd be better to have it only a partial pull (I could be wrong but regardless it'd be nice to be able to tune it).
Item tooltip in inventory covers up the view of the character stats, which i want to see change as I equip the item. Have to constantly dance my cursor on and off the item to compare how the numbers change.
Want to preview all stat changes as a whole for a piece of gear, like the down/up arrows in D3. Currently a +3 damage can be misleading if it removes a +3 intelligence (or primary stat) property in the process, which reduces attack power. Maybe while hovering or comparing an item, show the (+3) next to the current Attack Power, Armor, etc to show how it would change with that item.
I want to disable the clicking sound when I highlight an interactable/lootable object. I see other great sound options in the menu but could not find that. On consoles, since it’s constantly targeting items as I’m walking around, I was hearing it incessantly and it became meaningless.
Can I have the option for item labels to display indefinitely? And/or have the L stick toggle on/off but otherwise no timer? Appreciate having options for how long to display them, but I want longer options than 10 seconds.
Rogue should have more dodge as a class perk. Maybe multiple charges, less cooldown, or no cooldown? Upgradeable dodge? Boots can have these properties but rogue should have it inherent since moving around the battlefield is a core strategy in this class.
Health globes seem to despawn after a short time? Feels like this needs to be much longer. Seemed inconsistent. Maybe they were getting despawned during more intense battles, which is exactly when I want them to stick around for when I need it.
Hard to get used to not being able to walk over a health globe to heal. Nice if it would heal you and give your potion a charge like the healing wells do. Combination of the D3 and D2 health systems. I find that when I see a health globe, I look at my health to see how low it is, press the heal button, then walk over the globe to recharge. Just remove the step and heal me when I walk over it.
Unable to evade away when stunned but able to sorc teleport (“unstoppable”). Let me evade out from a stun please, especially since evade is on a cooldown so I still have to be strategic with it.
UI/UX interactions on the character creation screen are inconsistent. Sometimes I can just hover select an option to see it previewed, and sometimes I have to manually click it to see it. Most of them allow you to scroll through one at a time with D pad, but the Markings options scroll one at a time til it gets to the edge, then scrolls an entire page, skipping 3 of the options if you just continue to press the right D pad.
Class perks (enchantments, book of the dead, etc) have really inconsistent requirements and ways/frictions/times to obtain them. Necromancer gets theirs at like level 3. Sorcerer gets a side quest to go find the book in a dungeon, not sure when that showed up, maybe around level 15 (didn’t notice it til much later.)? But druid at level 15 is just given the perk, no fetch quest required?
If I'm targeting a destructible object with a skill that uses resource, but don't have enough of that resource, just use melee please, instead of just telling me I have no resource and not hitting the object.
I want to pick my character's voice/accent in addition to the rest of the appearance stuff. Don't need to add more, just let me choose from the ones that exist across the character classes - basically I don't want the voice tied to the class, just let me assign the voice to my character as I see fit. This would be even better if you could choose a feminine/masculine voice regardless of the body type chosen.
Can I also pick my pronouns?
Also I want facial hair options on female models (hide this toggle in an option menu if you have to), body hair options (including for women - I want my druid to have hairy legs), and scar options that aren't intentional markings but are more like battle wounds.
The scarring marking color does not really look like scarring. Looks more like paint. (blood is awesome though)
Henna has a lighter outline on some skin tones.
Wish list: Lost and Found loot for high rarity items like in Borderlands. If I’m partied with someone and something they killed generated a legendary for me, I want that item to go to a lost and found instead of requiring that I comb through everywhere they’ve been to ensure I didn’t miss something good.
Are there no more pets to pick up your gold? Or can I have a bigger pickup radius? Feels tedious to run around a bunch of circles to pick up gold. I wish this was more automatic. There’s never a time I don’t want to pick up gold.
I want the big center button on PS controller to open inventory, not map. But I can't remap that one. Want more similar to D3 controller layout, with map on Lstick and inventory on big button. That’s not an option apparently. Why keep changing the controller mappings with each new game? Terribly inconsistent across D3, D2Res, and D4 with very few customization options.
Salvage interface does not match sell interface. Cannot sell individual junk item (can only sell all Junk at once), or sell all of a rarity class like you can in the salvage menu.
Button mappings in sell interface are exact opposite of when in inventory (square to mark as junk in inventory equips in sell menu). The Stash interface matches the Sell screen too. I tried to mark an item as junk while looking at my stash, and it equipped it instead. This felt confusing and annoying.
When you first get to Kyovashad, Boza gives the Raising Spirits quest, and then the next side quest has us seeking out Bozan in Masetad Coffers. Names are too similar and confusing. I thought they were talking about the same person at first.
Distance from waypoint to stash/wardrobe seems a bit long, having to go up narrow stairway or wide path around back. Should place it outside of the inn near the waypoint. And its location on the map is misleading since you have to travel through the building to get to it, instead around the building like it looks on the map.
Aspects tied to an individual item - I wish it were on the slot like kanai's cube. Maybe if you were allowed to re-extract the same aspect at a discount/free for the next item upgrade? Or have one aspect able to equip to each slot, in addition to having them on an item?
Ore generators keep glowing/shimmering after I've collected from it.
I want my character to be barefoot or have sandals. Can the “unequipped” look be minimal foot attire?
I want to be able to zoom out of the skill tree to navigate the whole thing instead of little by little.
Wishlist: I want to send items to stash or sell or salvage them from the field. Like No Man's Sky salvage/refine and trade rocket, or Torchlight's pets that run back and sell at the market. Minimize trips back to town just to sell/salvage. More merchants/blacksmiths littered around are very helpful though.
Very early on, I keep picking up items that say they unlock new looks on salvage, so I want to save them, but I have no idea how long it will be until I find a blacksmith (before I’ve gotten to Kyovashad for the first time). Also my inventory got cluttered up with items that I picked up before I got poisoned and didn’t get a chance to sell before I was forced to kill the merchant. On second playthrough I was able to mitigate that, but first time (when I need the gold a lot more) it felt like I had screwed myself.
Loading screen tips are useful, but go by too quickly of you are on PS5 (first world problems!). It'd be nice to have a place to read those in a menu, since some of them looked pretty useful to know.
Sometimes I see the orange circle like there's an event but there's no event happening. The last time, I came back to it a minute or two later and an event started. Maybe missing a countdown to event start?
I want to change the name of my character. Maybe limit to one change? Or cost a bunch of gold? In D3 I did this by creating a new character, power leveling it, then equipping all the gear from my old one. I don’t think that option is going to be quite as viable here (maybe?)
Appreciate being able to change jewelry and markings after creation, but I also want to change the hair and facial hair too. Character needs a haircut.
Bug: when changing character appearance at wardrobe, the current markings are not selected.
I want to mark something as a favorite or be able to manually sort inventory to set aside items I might use. On console at least, the inventory cannot be manually sorted, only automatically by pressing R3. Then I lose track of which item it was I wanted to keep. Maybe also give me options for how the inventory gets sorted? Sort by type, rarity, value, order of pickup, etc?
Wishlist: small training grounds area in town to test new weapons and abilities, since you cannot use these in town. Maybe attack some dummies in the training area at the NE of town where you first cheered on the recruits?
Lots of inconsistency in what progresses for the party vs what progresses per player. If I interact with an npc, it may show only me the cinematic, or it may pull both of us in. I have no way to know before I start it. If I skip it, and my party-mate does not, when I press to interact on the next step it pulls them out of their cinematic. No obvious indication when it's an action that affects the party as a whole. Side quests do not progress for both of us at all, even if we’re on the same side quest on the same step. Each needs to do the interaction separately. I think this either needs to be made more consistent, or communicated much better to the players what to expect as far as party progression.
Rogue is far more vocal than other classes. The sounds are over exaggerated and a bit inappropriate sounding. This was played on a female Rogue. Haven’t tried male.
I don't want gems to take up space. Moved in the right direction in D3 to allow stacking, but I wish they wouldn't take up space at all, especially that each gem tier and type takes up a stack space. Can they go into another tab like the consumables and quest items do?
When refunding and reallocating ability points, it's difficult to swap points from one first tier ability to another because it temporarily would break a connection to a later ability (so would not allow me to do it). Had to do some weird juggling to make it work. So if I wanted to switch from Claw to Maul, I had to undo points higher in the tree (Shred), spend it on Maul, then undo Claw, then re-spend on Shred. I should be able to just swap points on the same tier. Or what if each tier of the tree unlocked at a certain character level instead of being based on number of skill points spent?
Couldn't salvage an item that I had upgraded, but it still said unlocks new look on salvage (what a tease!).
Bug; around the right of the alabaster monastery entrance is some black spots / Z fighting, maybe something clipping through the snow?
Before the final act boss fight, I did hear the clanking footsteps but didn’t know what it was and thought it was a bug, until my character said I’m being followed. However, during the big boss fight, I did not notice when the Knight Penitent showed up. And when I did see him, I didn’t know he was on my side. I was very confused for the first half of the fight. I finally figured out he was there to help and shield me, which was a nice mechanic. I both loved and hated having to dodge all over the battlefield to avoid getting hit by the poison stuff. Made for an interesting fight but didn't leave me a lot of chances to deal damage since I was constantly playing defense.
Boss enemies have no introduction. I’m just suddenly fighting them and often do not get a chance to look at their design or size them up before engaging in battle. D3 had a nice little intro for each boss where they’d talk to you for a moment and you could appreciate the art and mentally prepare yourself for battle. I couldn’t tell you what the final boss was called or what it looked like, since I was too busy trying not to die through the whole fight.
Lots of running back and forth to previously discovered places that did not have waypoints. Examples: Kor Valar, Horadric Vault, Black Lake. Like, Go from Black Lake back to Horadric Vault back to Black Lake and I’m like “C’mon, I was JUST THERE!” and then I have to find a somewhat nearby waypoint and then trek the rest of the way there. These places should have waypoints or else like a portal that opens in town as a shortcut to return for the quest.
I felt like I was getting weaker as I leveled up. This is likely because enemies are scaling to my level, but I had not found better gear, so my damage felt lower. I even checked to make sure I was on the lowest world tier since I was struggling to get through portions.
Praise (with some suggestions):
Skill system is novel and interesting. Works fairly well. Good balance of D3 style rune choices and D2 style added skill points. Though I do wish each additional point gave a bigger bonus since it’s limited to 5. Appreciate that you can respect for free under level 15, and that you can undo/return a single skill point spent rather than the entire tree. More freedom to try things.
Potion charge system is a big improvement on D3's single use cooldown. Though I kind of wish there was a hybrid approach. Let charges recharge themselves over time? Auto heal when picking up an orb?
Fast travel is nice, skips the step of going to town and then hopping on the waypoint. Just go directly to the waypoint you want (just need this for getting to other players now).
World building is more immersive. There is more showing and less telling. Side quests, inspectable objects, NPC dialog, etc. Much better than the lore book entries. Even when there are lore-book type things the way they’re done is much more from the perspective of the people inhabiting this world and less like an entry in a bestiary. For example, the one about the monk trying to save someone that was killed and resurrected by the Khazra…. It was so emotional and heartfelt and gave you much more immersion into this brutal world than a bestiary entry that tells you that Khazra can resurrect people.
Voice acting is superb. Enough said.
I love that the looks (transmogs) are slot based instead of item based. Can turn off a look on the fly. Big thumbs up.
Also the entire character creator is something I never knew I needed in a Diablo game. I really enjoyed getting to create my own interpretations on the classes. Wakanda Warrior Rogue, Native American Druid, Arab Sorcerer, Necromancer Jesus…. This was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed seeing other people’s takes on them as well. It allowed me to build a little backstory of my character. But also each class is still distinctive enough that I could tell what other players’ classes were just at a glance (mostly from body type).
Oh also the body type diversity is really great.
I like the distinction between cellars and dungeons. Dungeon objectives and bosses were a nice surprise, and a bit of a challenge!
Merchants and blacksmiths are present enough that I rarely, if ever, had to run to town just to offload items despite picking up literally everything.
Camera moves in closer when in a town/village and subtly pulls back when leaving town. Nice.
One hand weapon + offhand is more viable dps now. Haven't had to swap for a 2 handed weapon like I usually do in D3.
Checkmark in dungeons and cellars to indicate you've completed them is really nice. But I wasn’t sure if that persisted the next time I loaded the game. It’d be nice if it did.
I like the persistent world maps but randomized dungeons. This felt like a nice balance. Don’t have to re-explore the area every time you travel back to a place.
Liked that the enemies respawn in the open world.
I like that completion (exploration, cellars, etc) persists across sessions but being able to reset dungeons manually. Less pressure to stay in a current play session in order to maintain maps, etc.
The scenic views are a really cool feature. I want more of them!
So much more moral nuance. I’m loving this so far. Please give us more reason to question why we immediately assume all demons are bad and evil, when it was both demon and angel that created humans. We’ve got the “angels aren’t all that great either” but I want to see the other side of that coin which is “not all demons are literally the worst”. I’m seeing seeds of this with the bloodied wolf and Lilith, and I hope it continues moving in that direction.
THANK YOU for allowing me the option to disable the “I can't use this yet. Not enough Mana.” dialog. Though I had to dig down all the way in the sound (or accessibility?) menu to find it. I’ve been wanting this option since D2.
Appreciate that the “looks” are unlocked for all of your characters, so you don’t have to re-salvage the same items on each.
Some really neat quest mechanics like the pilgrimage. Though I feel like that could go a bit further. Maybe reduce the abilities you can use, make you move slower, no/less healing, or something like that to really make it feel impactful. Right now it's just dark around you but otherwise normal.
Finally fixed my #1 complaint about D3 - We now have split screen inventory management in couch co-op! Yay!

If I had to pick only one thing from this list to fix before launch, it'd be the inconsistency/lack of communication around what quest steps and cinematics get shared across the party and what is individual. The number of times my party mate and I had to say, "Are you still in the cinematic? Did that advance for you? You have to talk to the guy. Stop talking, I'm trying to listen. Oh geez, I didn't know it was gonna skip your cinematic!" were too many.

2023.03.29 06:59 73hebdhyd6h36dhld Why does my T480 keep crashing?

For the past month and a half, my laptop keeps freezing and I have to do a hard reset every time. When I had Windows 10, it would crash abruptly and I would get different error almost every time like kernel failure security check or system service exception as an example. I switched to Linux mint a few weeks ago and instead it would freeze. I wanted to switch to Linux for awhile, I didn't do it just solely to fix this problem. It normally happens at least 2-3 times a day and I finally want to get to the bottom of things after putting it off.
I will give you my system information but I will also tell you that about a month before it started crashing/freezing, my internal battery died (or at least it stopped working with my computer) which created a problem not allowing the external battery to charge. I did what this guy did in the video and it fixed it. tps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV1iWoEstLA&ab_channel=lapfix
I was looking to buy the replacements of the internal and external batteries but I have to contend with 3rd party sellers. This internal battery from this seller https://www.ebay.com/itm/193875542782 looks alright, it's the 72Wh Battery I have a hard time choosing from buying the expensive lenovo branded one for $160 or buy from a 3rd party. Looking at the system info again, it appears that the internal battery is working again but I may buy new batteries anyway because the battery life is not very good after 4 years of life.

2023.03.29 06:40 LeutnantzurSeeFritz The Exploits of Irving Reese Part 11: Irving's Future

(You can also find this story and the pervious chapters here.)
Irving was still recovering from the news that Malcolm gave him. Enterprise learned from Oklahoma, and she was happy for her and Malcolm.
The news spread around the base like wildfire. The shipgirls of the Eagle Union were proud of both Oklahoma and Malcolm.
“Oklahoma told me she thinks she was at least three months pregnant when she found out. She only found out right before her party. Her child will most likely be born in March.”
Irving and Enterprise made sure to not bother Oklahoma and Malcolm, as they were on their honeymoon in the Dragon Empery.
Irving thought about the future. He knew that he and Enterprise had something special. He wanted to start a family with Enterprise. But he wanted to wait until Malcolm and Oklahoma had their child before he could even think about him and Enterprise having children.
Irving then thought to himself. What if he and Enterprise got married? He knew they would have to wait until winter, as they did not want to get married too soon after Malcolm and Oklahoma.
Irving was thinking about these thoughts on the couch. Enterprise could tell that something was troubling Irving.
“Honey. You alright?”
Irving nodded. He knew he could not tell her yet, as he didn’t want to ruin the surprise he had for her.
“Yeah. I’m alright. I was thinking of visiting Samuel and New Jersey.”
Enterprise smiled. She knew Irving was just as excited as she was for Malcolm and Oklahoma’s baby. Irving kissed Enterprise and left to go to Samuel and New Jersey’s dorm. Irving arrived at the door and knocked. New Jersey opened the door and greeted him with a smile.
“What brings you here, Irving?”
“I just wanted to talk to Samuel about something.”
New Jersey nodded as she let Irving inside. Samuel was sitting on the couch watching some football on TV.
“What brings you here?”
“Ok, so say I was to propose to someone. How would I do it?”
Samuel smiled. He had a feeling that Irving was thinking of proposing to Enterprise. However, he could not help him with his question.
“I cannot tell you how to do that, Irving, but I know someone who can.”
Irving nodded.
“Who?”
Samuel whispered the person’s name in his ear. Irving grinned and nodded. He knew who Samuel was referring to.
“Thanks, Sammy. You were a lot of help.”
Samuel nodded, and Irving left.
Irving found himself in the Ironblood part of the base. He went to Tirpitz and Fritz’s home.
He rang the doorbell. A boy opened the door. Irving knew the boy was Fritz and Tirpitz’s eldest son, Moritz.
“What brings you here, Herr Reese?”
“I’m here to talk to your mom and dad. Can you get them for me?”
Moritz closed the door and went to get his mother and father.
Soon, Fritz was at the door.
“What do you need, Irving?”
“I’m here to talk to you and Tirpitz. It’s about me and Enterprise.”
Fritz opened the door fully to let Irving inside.
“Children, go outside and play. Mutti and Vati have to talk to Herr Reese.”
“So, what did you want to talk about?”
“I want to propose to Enterprise. How should I do it?”
Fritz and Tirpitz smiled at each other. They knew Irving had found the person for him.
“If I were you, I would take it nice and slow. Tirpitz was pregnant with Moritz when she married me, and she told me on our wedding night.”
“Would January or February be a great time to have a wedding?”
Fritz and Tirpitz smiled at each other, but they asked Irving a simple question.
“Do you have a ring?”
Irving shook his head. He felt stupid. He had all these plans. To get married, and start a family, and he didn’t even have a ring for Enterprise.
Tirpitz looked at Irving.
“Do you even have a location in mind? I proposed to Fritz in the Tiergarten, and Heinz proposed to Bismarck during an Ironblood ball.”
“I was thinking I would propose to her in her room after we danced by ourselves.”
Fritz and Tirpitz nodded at each other. They knew that Enterprise would like to save the more public part of the wedding for the wedding itself.
Irving thought long and hard. He knew that he would have to get a ring for Enterprise and find the perfect moment to propose.
He figured that the wisest move would be to get the ring first.
“After all, it would be strange to propose without a ring.” Irving thought to himself.
“Thank you for the chat, you two.”
He was now a man on a mission.
Irving made his way to Akashi’s store. She stocked the store to the brim with everything the base needed. Akashi grinned with excitement at the sight of Irving in her store.
“Hello again, Irving! What can I do you for?”
Irving whispered into Akashi’s ear.
“I need to buy a wedding ring. I’m planning on proposing to Enterprise.”
Akashi nodded.
“Follow me.”
Akashi and Irving made their way to the backrooms of Akashi’s store.
“What kind of gemstone do you want?”
Irving thought long and hard. He decided he would do what Malcolm did and make the engagement ring her launch day’s birthstone.
“A ring with an opal and tourmaline on it.”
Akashi nodded and asked Irving another question.
“What kind of metal?”
Irving froze. He did not know what metal Enterprise would like.
Would she like gold? Or was she more of a platinum or titanium girl?
Irving shook his head.
“Gold.”
He figured he would get the same medal that Malcolm used.
Akashi nodded and gave him a box containing a gold ring with two gemstones, an opal, and a tourmaline on it.
Irving froze when he thought of how much the ring was going to cost him.
“What is your yearly salary, Irving? I know you have some money saved up.”.
Irving gave Akashi his salary.
“Because you are a loyal customer of Akashi, I’m only going to charge you half of what I was going to charge. Don’t let it go to your head.” Akashi told Irving with a devious smile on her face.
“Well then, how much is it then?”
Akashi laughed deviously.
“Around 20,000 in coins.”
Irving’s eyes went wide. That was almost a year’s worth of his salary. He would need to cash in his savings just to break even. Irving nodded and paid for the ring. He put the box in his pocket. Now he had to set a perfect mood.
“Do you have any old seventy-eight RPM records, Akashi?”
Akashi pulled out a milk crate full of records.
Irving looked through them. He knew he and Enterprise both liked jazz.
He found two that he knew he and Enterprise would love to dance to. They were “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller and “It’s been a Long, Long Time.” by Harry James and His Orchestra. He paid for the records and made his way to Enterprise’s room.
He saw Enterprise relaxing on the couch. He placed his hand on her shoulder to wake her up.
Enterprise slowly opened her eyes and saw Irving looking at her with a smile on his face, holding a bag of records in his hand.
“Hey, do you want to dance with me? I got some new records from Akashi.”
Enterprise got off the couch and embraced Irving.
“Of course.”
Irving placed a record on the turntable.
The sounds of “Moonlight Serenade” filled the room as Enterprise and Irving danced.
Irving and Enterprise closed their eyes as they slow-danced to the music. Irving felt her body against his. He smiled.
“I’m surprised that you know how to dance, Enty.”
Enterprise smiled.
“Of course, I know how to dance. I’m more surprised that you know how to dance than anything.”
Once the record was done, Irving changed the record to the other song that he bought.
The trumpet of “It’s been a Long Long Time” filled the room. The notes flew through the room like velvet.
As the music ended, Irving and Enterprise kissed each other.
Irving knew he had found the perfect song to propose to her.
He just needed a perfect time.
A couple of weeks later, Malcolm and Oklahoma were home from their honeymoon.
Irving decided he would tell Malcolm about his plans to propose to Enterprise.
Malcolm could not believe it. First, he gets married, and finds out he’s a father, and now Irving wants to get married to Enterprise.
Malcolm knew that Irving and Enterprise would get married eventually. Malcolm was proud of his friend for getting a ring.
Irving showed Malcolm the ring.
“I plan on playing Moonlight Serenade while we are dancing. After the song ends, I’ll pop the question. If she says yes, we’ll dance to "It's Been a Long, Long, Time.”
Malcolm nodded, as he knew it was a brilliant plan.
“How was your honeymoon, Malcolm?”
He smiled.
“I mean, Oklahoma was sick as a dog the whole time. But the Dragon Empery was beautiful, especially at night. Harbin owns a restaurant there. The crab Rangoon she made was one of the best things I have ever eaten.”
Suddenly, Malcolm heard Oklahoma vomiting from the bathroom. She was suffering from morning sickness. She had been suffering from it during their honeymoon.
“Malcolm, come here!”
Malcolm knew Oklahoma needed him, as he would hold her hair and rub her back while she was vomiting.
Before Malcolm left to help Oklahoma, he asked Irving a question.
“When’s the wedding?”
“It will be in early February.”
Malcolm nodded.
“Jeez. I hope Okie will be able to go. She’ll be far into her pregnancy when you guys get married.”
With Malcolm knowing of the plan. Irving went on his phone.
“Excuse me, can I book a reservation for a week from now, under Mr. Reese?”
“Of course.”
Irving nodded. He made sure to book a reservation at a fancy restaurant on base.
Irving made his way to Enterprise’s room and slept next to her.
A week had passed, and he knew that today was the day that he would propose to Enterprise.
He knew that today was her day off, and he took her out on a date.
The couple made it to the fancy restaurant. The couple got some wine and steak. The couple was having a great time.
“I’m glad we can be more of a couple, now that you have been discharged.”
The couple walked to the dorms after they finished eating. The cool October air only added to their romantic walk.
The couple made it to Enterprise’s room. Irving put on, “Moonlight Serenade.” The couple slowly danced, with Enterprise and Irving embracing. The music filled the room and made them feel frozen in time.
Once the song ended, Irving knew that it that was his cue. Irving talked to Enterprise.
“Enterprise, there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you.”
He had his hand in his pocket, reaching for the box.
Enterprise nodded. She saw Irving getting down on one knee.
“Enterprise. You have made me the happiest man alive. I want to ask you a single question.”
He was trying to keep himself from choking on his words. He reached for the box in his pocket. His hands were shaking slightly.
Enterprise cried tears of joy. She knew Irving was only asking one question in this context.
Irving pulled the box out of his pocket and opened it, revealing the ring inside.
“Enterprise. Will you marry me?”
Enterprise responded with an embrace and a kiss as she placed the ring on her finger.
“Yes. I will become your wife. I love you.”
She had tears of joy rolling down her face.
Irving changed the record on the record player to “It’s been a Long Long Time.”
The couple danced. They knew they were perfect for each other.
Soon, the couple slept together. They knew they were no longer boyfriend and girlfriend. They were soon-to-be husband and wife.

The EU’s Data Act Balancing Regulations and Innovation in the Age of Smart Contracts
By Hein Dauven Mar 28, 2023 - Rotterdam
The European Union's Data Act seeks to give people more control over what can be done with their data, particularly in relation to IoT. However, the legislation has been criticized for its "one size fits all" approach, with some arguing that it lacks clarity. One of the criticisms is that, once again, the technical side was not involved in the creation of the legislation, and this lack of knowledge is exactly why it lacks any clarity. This article will explore the potential introduction of a kill switch and pause functionality in smart contracts proposed in the act, analyzing how these features can both protect and impede innovation, and whether alternative solutions might be more appropriate.
The EU Data Act
The Rationale for a kill switch and pausing
The EU's desire for a kill switch and pausing functionality stems from the need to protect users from potential risks associated with smart contracts, particularly in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). While the Data Act does not explicitly mention blockchain-based smart contracts, the lack of clarity in the legislation has raised concerns for those in the blockchain industry.
As the blockchain landscape continues to grow and becomes more intertwined with the traditional financial system, the potential for systemic risks increases. In this context, the introduction of a kill switch could be seen as a way for the EU to mitigate the risk of catastrophic failure in the financial system. By providing the means to rapidly respond to emergencies, the EU aims to maintain trust and security from their perspective while ensuring that the integration of blockchain-based smart contracts with traditional financial systems does not jeopardize the stability of the overall financial system. However, striking the right balance between regulation and innovation is crucial to avoid stifling the growth and potential benefits of blockchain technology.
Alternatives to the proposed functionalities
Despite the potential benefits, critics argue that kill switches and pausing functionality may introduce friction and limit the advantages of smart contracts. Alternatives could include greater reliance on social consensus, with control over smart contracts distributed among a variety of stakeholders. This approach could enhance trust while maintaining the decentralized nature of blockchain technology.
Who is in control?
The question of who should have control over kill switches and pausing functionality raises concerns about trust and centralization. Three main options exist: single user control, multi-signature (multi-sig) control, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Each option has its own implications for trust and the speed at which the kill switch or pause can be executed.
Single user control: In this scenario, one individual or entity has the authority to activate the kill switch or pause functionality of the smart contract. While this option allows for the fastest response time in case of an emergency, it centralizes power and control, potentially raising concerns about trust and vulnerability to malicious actions/actors. Moreover, the single user may not have the necessary expertise to make the best decision in every situation, which could lead to suboptimal outcomes. There’s also the risk of loss of the private key attached to this single user, which could make executing the functions impossible in the future.
Multi-signature (multi-sig) control: Multi-sig control requires multiple users to authorize the activation of a kill switch or pause functionality, usually through a predefined threshold of signatures, such as a 3-of-5 or 4-of-7 scheme where a majority of participants must approve actions. This approach distributes decision-making power and reduces the risk of misuse or errors. Trust is enhanced as no single user can unilaterally control the system. However, the speed of execution may be slower compared to single user control, as the approval process involves multiple parties and potential delays in coordinating their actions. In case of one of the users losing their keys, it’s still possible to get to a predefined threshold or to swap out users if need be if their key is lost for example, providing a layer of redundancy.
Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs): DAOs involve a more decentralized approach to control, with decisions made by a collective of stakeholders who vote on proposals using predefined rules and governance mechanisms. This approach can enhance trust by distributing decision-making power among the community and/or companies, reducing the risk of centralization and malicious actions. However, the execution speed may be the slowest of the three options, as the voting process can be time-consuming and may require broad consensus before a decision is reached. DAOs are often unfamiliar to regulators, resulting in a gray area for liability and requiring education about their unique decentralized structure before decision-making processes can be effectively understood and managed. The US state of Wyoming is the first government body to recognize DAOs as legal entities.
Each option for controlling kill switches and pausing functionality in smart contracts has its own trade-offs in terms of trust and speed. Striking the right balance between these factors is crucial for ensuring that kill switches and pause functions can protect users without stifling innovation or compromising the benefits of decentralization.
Social consensus and its role in trust
Social consensus, a concept rooted in the idea of collective decision-making, involves the participation of various stakeholders in reaching an agreement on a specific issue. Social consensus can facilitate a democratic and transparent approach to managing key features such as the proposed kill switch and pause functionality, in favor of outsourcing it to a new bureaucratic entity with sweeping control over any deployed smart contract.
Social consensus can play a crucial role in building trust in systems with kill switches and pause functionality, particularly in the context of the Data Act and its goals. Distributing control over these features among various stakeholders can ensure that decisions are made in a more decentralized manner and transparently, fostering trust in both the regulatory benefits put forth by the Data Act and the decentralized nature of the blockchain ecosystem.
The Data Act aims to provide a framework that both safeguards users from potential data risks while ideally also preserving the innovative potential of smart contracts and other digital technologies. By incorporating social consensus into the decision-making process for kill switches and pause functionality, the EU can strike a balance between protecting users and preventing undue centralization of power that goes against the core ethos of the crypto community.
In a smart contract backed by a DAO/social consensus, the participants have a vested interest in ensuring the contract's integrity and security. Should the smart contract be hacked, contain a bug, or be used in a fraudulent way, the stakeholders can collectively decide to pause or activate the kill switch to protect their interests and prevent further damage. This approach aligns with the incentives of the participants, as they all share the responsibility of maintaining the contract's integrity and value.
Social consensus empowers the participants in a smart contract to act in their collective best interest, providing a robust safeguard against potential threats. It is an approach that would not compromise on the values espoused by the crypto community, while at the same time getting to the heart of the issue that the EU wants to solve with a kill switch and pause functionality. Good faith actors would choose to comply and create a vibrant and well informed community that can harbor the security of its own protocols.
Legal entities and liability
Involving legal entities in multi-sig or DAO arrangements can provide a layer of accountability and liability protection, helping to maintain trust in the system while still offering the benefits of decentralization. Within the context of the Data Act, companies can leverage the concept of a DAO or multi-sig to appoint the appropriate individuals within their organization, as well as external auditors, to oversee the kill switch or pause functionality of smart contracts.
For instance, a company could create a multi-sig arrangement where key personnel, such as executives or board members, along with external auditors or legal representatives, are designated as signatories with the authority to activate the kill switch or pause a smart contract. These individuals should be known and legally accountable for their actions, ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering trust in the system.
Another approach involves forming a DAO as a legal entity, making it liable for the functioning of a smart contract. This could be achieved by registering the DAO as a legal entity, such as a corporation or a limited liability company, subject to the jurisdiction and regulatory requirements where it operates. By doing so, the DAO would be held accountable for its actions, and the participants would be required to adhere to relevant regulations and legal obligations.
In either case, the involvement of legal entities in the governance of smart contracts under the Data Act can help strike a balance between the decentralized nature of blockchain technology and the need for regulatory compliance and accountability. By combining the benefits of decentralization with a framework of legal responsibility, companies can foster trust in their smart contract systems while ensuring adherence to the Data Act's requirements and protecting users from potential risks.
Implications for composability
Composability refers to the ability of smart contracts to seamlessly interact with one another, building upon each other's functionality to create more complex applications and systems. This property allows developers to create modular and reusable components that can be combined in various ways.
Introducing a kill switch or pausing function can pose risks to the composability of smart contracts, potentially leading to a cascading effect of affected contracts. When a smart contract is paused or terminated using a kill switch, it may disrupt the normal functioning of other contracts that depend on it, causing a chain reaction of disruptions throughout the interconnected system of smart contracts.
For example, consider a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform where multiple smart contracts are designed to work together, such as lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and stablecoins. If a critical smart contract within this ecosystem is paused or terminated, it could prevent other contracts from executing their functions, leading to a breakdown in the entire platform. Users may be unable to access their funds or execute transactions, resulting not only in a breach of trust but potentially also a loss of funds. Something the Data Act is supposed to prevent, not cause.
Understanding these risks and their potential impact on innovation is crucial for striking the right balance between security and flexibility. While the implementation of a kill switch or pausing function may provide valuable safeguards against hacks, fraud, and unforeseen consequences, it is essential to consider the potential disruptions and unintended consequences that these mechanisms might introduce to the composability of smart contracts.
In order to minimize the risks associated with kill switches and pausing functions, regulators and developers must explore alternative solutions or implement safeguards that minimize the potential cascading effects while still providing a level of protection and control that could meet the regulatory goals of the Data Act.
Mutability versus immutability in the Data Act
The Data Act's impact on mutability and immutability of data raises important questions about the extent to which smart contracts can be modified. Striking the right balance between adaptability and security is essential for future innovation.
In the context of smart contracts, the immutability of the code and the tamper-proofnature of the transaction history are key features that ensure trust and security within the blockchain ecosystem. The code of a smart contract cannot be changed after it has been deployed, and the transaction history remains unalterable. However, smart contracts do carry state, which can be mutable. This means that the current state of a smart contract can be updated or modified, but the history of those changes remains unchangeable.
Although the code of a smart contract is immutable, developers can design contracts with a certain degree of flexibility, allowing for upgrades or modifications to adapt to changing circumstances, add features, to fix potential bugs or vulnerabilities. This can be achieved through mechanisms such as upgradeable contract proxies or contract modules that can be replaced or updated without altering the core contract logic.
In the context of the Data Act, balancing the mutable state of smart contracts and the immutability of their code and transaction history becomes crucial, as the legislation seeks to protect user data and maintain a secure environment. On one hand, allowing for some level of flexibility in the contract state enables developers to respond to unforeseen issues or regulatory requirements, ensuring that smart contracts remain compliant and functional. On the other hand, preserving the immutability of the code and transaction history is essential to maintaining the trust and security that blockchain technology offers.
On-chain and off-chain data
Understanding the distinction between on-chain and off-chain data is vital for implementing the Data Act. This distinction has implications for how data is stored, accessed, and regulated within the blockchain ecosystem and how dApps handle state.
On-chain data refers to information that is stored directly on the blockchain. This includes transaction history, smart contract code, and any other data that is recorded and maintained within the distributed ledger. On-chain data is immutable and transparent, ensuring the security of the blockchain. A contract can change its state, but this state change is recorded as history and observable.
Off-chain data, on the other hand, refers to information that is stored outside of the blockchain. This can include databases, file storage systems like IPFS, or any other external data sources. Off-chain data can be mutable and the change of data can be done in an untraceable way. It allows for greater flexibility and adaptability, which comes with trade-offs in terms of trust and security, as off-chain data is not subject to the same transparency and traceability as on-chain data.
In the context of the Data Act, the distinction between on-chain and off-chain data is crucial, as it has implications for the storage and regulation of sensitive information such as trade secrets. While the Data Act may require certain data to be kept confidential, it is possible for developers to circumvent these requirements by storing sensitive information off-chain. This approach can offer greater control over access to the data and help maintain trade secret protection. However, it also raises questions about the transparency and regulatory compliance of such systems. User data can be tampered with unbeknownst to them and with no verifiable trace.
The role of Zero-Knowledge Proofs and RegDeFi
Zero-knowledge proof enabled and Regulated DeFi infrastructures like Dusk Network can make compliance with the Data Act easier by providing selective disclosure, privacy and visibility. This technology can ensure that off-chain modifications are legitimate while still protecting sensitive data, such as trade secrets.
Dusk Network leverages selective disclosure to minimize the exposure of sensitive information, allowing only authorized parties to access specific data within a smart contract. Through the use of zero-knowledge proofs, Dusk enables trade secrets to remain confidential while still providing the necessary transparency for regulatory compliance. This approach ensures that sensitive information is not unnecessarily exposed, thus reducing the risk of unauthorized access or misuse.
Additionally, Dusk Network's built-for-compliance smart contracts introduce cleaner roles for auditors and other stakeholders, enabling them to selectively view parts of a smart contract that others cannot access. These roles can be, and in Dusk’s XSC standard are, extended to include roles that allow the pausing of smart contract execution.
Furthermore, the use of zero-knowledge proofs and selective disclosure in Dusk Network can help reduce fraud risks associated with smart contracts. By allowing only authorized parties to view and modify specific data, the technology minimizes the potential for tampering, unauthorized access, or manipulation. This ensures the integrity of the smart contracts and enhances the overall security of the blockchain ecosystem.
In summary, Dusk Network can help address the challenges posed by the Data Act by providing selective privacy, visibility, verifiable computation and built-for-compliance smart contracts. These technologies offer a balanced approach to maintaining the confidentiality of trade secrets and enabling auditors to perform their roles effectively while reducing fraud risks and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

2023.03.29 06:04 Learn_the_Lore Crimes Against VRAM Usage - Technical Blind-Spots and What the Game Maker Profiler Doesn't Tell You

Note: Adapted from a devlog posted to itch.io. Edited for clarity, specificity, and usefulness.
Hello again, gamemaker. As part of the ongoing development efforts for my project, Reality Layer Zero, I've been tinkering around with optimization and profiling recently. I wanted to share some of my personal discoveries here, on the off-chance they're remotely useful to anyone other than me.
To preface matters, this post will largely be talking about diagnostic techniques. When you know you've got a problem and you don't know what it is, you might employ some of these steps to figure things out. The appropriate optimizations to apply, once appropriate diagnosis has occurred, tends to be a somewhat obvious thing, so that side of development is of lesser interest to us for the duration of this write-up. We'll still talk about it a little bit, in-brief, but not to any satisfactory degree if you're not yet totally comfortable with common optimization techniques and why they work. Just a little bit of optimization talk, as a treat.
I should also mention that, while much of this post will be spent discussing very "3D graphics"-related topics, the techniques outlined here should be fairly universal across all Game Maker projects (2D and 3D) and, indeed, game development in general. The only difference will be what numbers you think are acceptable, depending on what your target platforms are and how your game "ought" to run.
So, about two weeks ago, a friend of mine tried to run my game on a 10-year-old laptop with a 2GB VRAM discrete graphics card. This was the result:
Hey... That's not the usual crash message box...
After doing a real quick Google, I found that this error is (usually) caused by the DirectX application-- in this case, my game-- allocating more texture memory than is available on the host device.
To be honest, at the time, I dismissed this as being not a very critical issue-- after all, the hardware was old, probably not representative of a typical modern system, and could have had untold other problems of its own that caused the crash.
However, something kept bugging me about it and, after about 2 weeks of sitting on it, I decided to properly investigate.
As it turns out, this wasn't exactly the first sign that not all was well with the game's VRAM usage. The first time happened almost a month prior when a different friend recorded this clip of the game running on a GTX1050. There's a stutter in the framerate that occurs once every three seconds or so, and, curiously, only in "exterior" scenes. The GTX1050, for reference, has 4GB of VRAM.
On first brush with this footage, I couldn't even hazard a guess as to what was going on-- after all, the profiler said the game was running fine! The framerate was comfortably in the middle-hundreds, and memory usage was reported at around... 900MB. Well, okay, I guess that sounds a little bit high, but it's a 3D game with real-time lighting and shadows! Besides that, RAM is cheap! It... it is 900 MB of RAM, isn't it?
So, the only answer I can give is... Maybe? The documentation is somewhat vague on this point. I'm actually still not sure whether the memory usage displayed in the debugger graph is RAM, VRAM, or a lump sum of both.
After applying the optimizations I'll talk about in a moment, the profiler reports memory usage as being <= 500 MB (or 300 MB less than the control) under the same conditions. I'm not sure if this was a product of the optimizations to VRAM usage or of a separate, unrelated effort wherein I applied compression to some of the internal audio files (thus reducing their memory footprint when loaded by the game). I'm leaning toward the latter as the explanation, which would indicate that the debugger graph only shows RAM usage. This... Seems like, possibly, not the best thing in the world for video game diagnostic purposes. However, I'm unwilling to say that I've confirmed this to be the case definitively.
My favorite corner of the screen.
In a similar information deficit, the more in-depth profiler view only shows call count and execution time. This is great for figuring out certain performance bottlenecks-- stuff that isn't executing as efficiently as it could be-- but not so good for figuring out when you've, say, allocated an unreasonable amount of texture memory for a shadow map that, in truth, just doesn't need to be that nice in the first place. Not to spoil the punch-line or anything.
First place is good, right?
So, VRAM, right? There's something going on with the VRAM, according to the DirectX error in the first image. Furthermore, it might have something to do with exterior scenes, judging by the video clip. However, the Game Maker debugger isn't doing a very good job of telling me how much VRAM the game is using-- I can't, using the built-in tools, watch the game and see how the memory reacts to figure out what's going on (at least, I don't think I can-- would love to be proven wrong, though).
To give me a little bit more insight, I enlisted the help of a 3rd party profiling tool-- GPU-Z, in case you're interested. Then, I cracked open my IDE and started tweaking areas of the code that seemed memory-inefficient.
At first, I thought the overuse of VRAM was related to the way I'm rendering text-- I'm actually using multiple surfaces at 1080p to render nice outlines and drop-shadows underneath the letters in a reasonably-fast manner at runtime (and then simply downsampling to lower resolutions, which results in some pretty nice-looking words, I think). However, whenever I reduced the size of these text surfaces, I noticed that GPU-Z was only reporting a very slight reduction in VRAM usage-- like, between 30-50MB. That's not nothing, but it's not really "make-or-break" numbers for a GPU, either. So, what gives? What's the real problem?
To borrow the words of Tetsuya Nomura, it was the darkness.
... Or more specifically, the shadows.
Angry duck noises.
The effect pictured above is accomplished using fairly traditional texture mapping as described in this excellent thread. The summary explanation of how it works is that, to figure out what parts of the scene should be "shaded" and what parts should be "lit", we basically snap a photograph from the perspective of the light that's casting a shadow, and anything that shows up in that photograph gets lit up-- everything else remains tinted by only the "ambient" color of the scene, which determines the darkness (and color) of the shadows that remain.
In order to accomplish this, though, you need paper to print the photograph onto-- virtual paper, of course, for virtual photos. In Game Maker, this is accomplished by rendering the snapshot to a surface and then converting that surface to a texture. There are simpler ways to do this in more recent versions of GMS2-- surface formats-- but I'm still running version 2.3.0.529, so I can't use 'em!
The smaller the shadow map surface, the worse the "quality" of the shadows. If you don't know what I mean by "quality", take a look at this:

Chunky pixel shadows!
See how the shadows become kind of boxy and deformed? That's the "quality" I'm talking about.
Now, the above image, admittedly, looks kind of cool, in a stylized sort of way-- but, low-quality shadows can introduce some weird-looking visual artifacts due to, I think, rounding errors-- one of the main offenders being "shadow acne" that jitters around and is, overall, not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the shadows in the above image.
So, you don't want to go too low-- avoid the artifacts. However, you also don't want to go too high. Every time you create a texture, you need somewhere to put it, after all. Further, since it's a texture we're talking about, the only place for it is in texture memory. What happens if the texture you create is just way way way too big to fit into the available texture memory on the host device? May I refer you back to the image at the top of this post?
So, yeah, basically the problem was that the shadow map quality in the exterior scenes was turned up absurdly high, resulting in absurdly large textures that 2GB graphics cards (and below) simply couldn't deal with. I figured this out when I, by total chance, entered an exterior scene and noticed GPU-Z reading-out these numbers:
<_>
Your eyes might go cross-eyed looking at this image at first, but the important row is the one labelled "Memory Used". It's reading out 3481 megabytes! That's over 3 gigabytes of texture memory! That's not just eye-crossing, that's eye-popping!
Mind, it's not 3 gigabytes from the game alone. My GPU (yours, too, probably) allocates what I'm gonna call "ambient memory" for basic system tasks, other open applications, and all of those Google Chrome tabs you're keeping open for whatever reason. For my development PC, this ambient usage is usually between 500 MB to 1 GB, and at the time this number was recorded, was close to 1GB.
In other words, the shadow map for this exterior scene required around 2 gigabytes to store in memory. That's, put simply, excessive!!
This was caused entirely by turning the quality of the shadow map up too high, which resulted in a texture that was unnecessarily large being generated and subsequently taking up far too much space on the GPU. I cut the quality of the shadow map in half, which bought back about 1.5 GB of texture memory without resulting in... really, any noticeable visual difference. Huh. Well how about that.
I should mention here that this isn't something unique to shadows or my implementation of them. Any time you create a surface, that surface is stored in texture memory. Create one that's too large, and you'll quickly exceed the limits of many GPU's. This is something important to keep in mind, both because it might not be intuitively obvious and because Game Maker (and your own development hardware) might not do a good job of warning you when you've done something unreasonable.
While I was testing all of this, I noticed that VRAM would also creep up turn-by-turn in the debate mode until the debate ended (at which point, the allocated memory would be freed)-- a kind of "localized" memory leak, so-to-speak. This, too, was related to shadow maps-- or, specifically, to the class which manages all of the shadow maps. Turns out, it wasn't cleaning up the maps associated with the temporary spotlights created by card effects in the debate mode. In effect, that means you'd play a card, and then the pretty lighting effect would flash, and then the shadow map that the light generated would just hang out in memory for the rest of the debate, taking up valuable space! Fixing this problem was simple, but I wouldn't have ever noticed it if I wasn't looking. Since this could potentially result in progressively terrible performance or even a hard crash if a debate goes on long enough on a small-enough GPU, I'm rather glad I managed to catch this problem when I did. Even if it was a, uh, a month after the first public release...
In the interest of not doing anything halfway, I added a graphics option in the options menu to allow the player to further reduce the shadow map quality if desired (all the option does is modify a scalar "shadow quality" global). This can save a respectable amount of VRAM as well, although the majority of the performance gains here came from the reduction on my end.
- To Wrap Up -
At this time of writing, I can confirm that the fix I applied here did fix the crash that kicked off this post. The 10-year-old laptop in question is now able to run Reality Layer Zero largely without complaint... At between, usually, 30 and 50 FPS on the lowest settings. So... It's not perfect, but it's a fair measure better than it used to be! I wonder if it'll run on a 1GB card...
In conclusion, test early, test often, and make sure you profile your VRAM usage in addition to your RAM. And, perhaps most importantly... Remember to play Reality Layer Zero on Steam or Itch, since it's both a really cool demonstration of what you can do with GM and, if I'm allowed to say so, a pretty cool game in its own right!

Tower-type Event Tips

  • For the vast majority of quests, you will be using your own party with no support pick. The minimum number of party members you can bring is 3, and you can bring up to 6 servants to each encounter.
  • If you want to speed through the event as quickly as possible, bring 3 servant parties. If you want to maximize bond gain, bring as many servants and event CEs as possible. I personally recommend doing the latter, as there is basically no better bond yield than what this event has to offer. With two weeks to complete the event, there is no need to rush and you are incentivized to take your time with the event CE.
  • The difficulty of the shopping quests will increase as you do more of them. You can expect a boss encounter at every 10th quest. The amount of bond gained for completing quests will also gradually increase.
  • Fatigue: Servants will go on a six-hour cooldown after you complete a quest with them. Withdrawing or failing a quest will not trigger the cooldown. You may place your servants in a Resting Place to bring them off cooldown in three hours. Servants will also have different affinities towards different resting places; putting them in one that they like will bring them off cooldown in two hours.
    • Taking Advantage of Resting Places: Using the resting places strategically can make a big difference. For instance, you can place Berserkers, Support Casters, and/or your strongest AoE NP servants there knowing that they'll be useful for most scenarios. Alternatively, you can put your favorite servants there. Assuming that you are diligent with playing the game every two hours to make full use of the reduced cooldown, this lets you field them exclusively for much of the event, thereby giving them all the bond points gained from those quests as well.

New features to this event

  • There are story quests every 10 levels. The first few will have fixed parties, but later on you are able to field your own party along with a friend support. As such, it is recommended that you put Chaldea Teatime on your event support lists.
  • Reverse Akiba Quests
    • Every 5th level, a special quest (10 AP) will open with restrictions on who you can put on your party. For example, the first special quest at Store 5 only allows you to field Male servants. Servants you use for these quests will go on cooldown. You do not have to complete these quests to continue climbing the tower. It is recommended that you look up the gimmicks for the ones that come later on, as they can be challenging if you go in blind.

2023.03.29 05:14 yaboivinmii I've noticed some stuff about myself recently that aligns pretty well with autism/neurodivergency, and I made a list of everything I noticed, with autism in mind. Do you think I could be ND?

The rules say self-dx is allowed sooooo
Also this was written originally with a doctor or psychologist who would already know who I am reading it in mind, so if there's any missing context I'd be happy to provide!
Different topics are marked with dashes
I tend to fidget with random objects and like to have at least one thing to mess around with in my pocket (ex. a yoyo, some legos, a rubber band, my phone's popsocket). I also used to (until 6th or 7th grade I think?) keep a bag of random stuff I collected that I like. Stuff ranging from bunch of erasers (some in interesting shapes), a bookmark I drew on to look like a ninja, some origami ninja stars, coins. Some of these objects are several years old, but I kept carrying them around just because. I would also play with them as toys to fidget around with or create stories with.
---------------
There are some things I do or used to do that seem like they could be stims
Possible stims:
Making and popping a bubble using my saliva/mouth
Pushing saliva out of my mouth (did this as a kid)
Beatboxing, I do this like all the time for absolutely no reason
Hitting things to make a beat as if they were drums
Making pop sounds with my mouth, often melodic
Wiggling my toes (I do this a lot since it's easy to hide)
Whistling (maybe????)
I sometimes do these dances when I'm alone and often when I'm excited, and I've just now realized that that's 100% a stim
I stim pretty much all the time, now that I'm thinking about it. Sometimes to at once lmao. Way more than a lot of other people in school.
‐--------------
I do "raptor arms" sometimes. It also feels more comfortable and natural to have my arms bent like that than to have them straight. If this is because of autism, then I often mask the behavior by putting my hands in my pockets or behind me.
---------------
Certain feelings I dislike:
Dry hands on paper
Sharp fingernails getting caught on clothes
Sand in certain places
Smell and maybe taste of bubblegum (gives me a headache, haven't tasted in a while though)
Certain types of soft fabric, especially when the part of the body it's on is dry
Cold liquids, I hate having water with ice in it and usually won't put ice in other drinks if I have a choice, unless they're warm and and need ice
---------------
I'm often the last person to understand a joke, or sometimes I won't realize until I hear it another time (like in movies and games)
---------------
Entirely speculation, but I feel like my mind works differently the others. I have nothing to compare to, but something just feels different in the way I think.
Like, example: the way I write a lot of these things is in a very strange way, almost like talking about myself in 3rd person, or as if im talking about another person. Like, when I think and talk about my feelings, its in a very analytical and logical way, as if im talking about the way someone else is feeling. Is that a normal way people think?
---------------
Eye contact is difficult most of the time
---------------
Writing/typing to people is often easier that talking (which is why I'm writing all this instead of saying it). Kinda like selective mutism.
---------------
I get overwhelmed sometimes and need to take a break in a cool, quiet place (so if I'm feeling overwhelmed on the main floor of my house and the tv is on, I'll go up to my room or the basement where it's usually quieter and a colder temp. Or sometimes during a party, I'll hang out in a more quiet room or the bathroom for a bit to have a break.
I remember one time I was at my cousin's house and all the adults were arguing about politics (as they do), and I went off and sobbed in another room because I was probably overwhelmed. And this happened relatively recently, so it's not like I was a kid who didn't know what was happening and just cried because I was scared. This sounds kinda like a meltdown?
---------------
I have trouble determining intentions or obvious things and other stuff like that. Most easily seen when I watch movies. For example, I was watching a movie with my friends one time, and figured out something interesting. I pointed it out to my friends, but they said something like "well yeah obviously". Happens a lot, I don't realize something that, in hindsight, was obvious.
---------------
Possible special interests? (That's a thing with autism right?)
A mobile game called My Singing Monsters that I usually play daily and first found as a child. I know everything there is to know about this game, so if I'm on the spectrum it's def an interest
Minecraft (or at least I used to?)
Legos (though I lost this one recently. It was a bad feeling.)
Storytelling (if an interest can be as broad as that)
A game called deltarune (my favorite game and idk why lmao)
Music
---------------
There's a few things I do that make no sense at my age.
I always want a parent to come up to my room and "tuck me in" at night. I can go without it but I do like it, even though it's very childish.
I put break oreo cookies apart and put them in a glass of milk, let them soak for a min, then fish them out and eat them with a spoon. Weird but it tastes great lol
As I (might) have mentioned already, I played with toys regularly up until some time last school year, which was 9th grade. I stopped playing with them around the same time I lost my interest in legos.
I still sit in the back seats of cars most of the time. I'm not sure why, but I just prefer them for some reason even though I should prefer the passenger seat. It's not even like a "I feel safer in the back seat" either, I just enjoy it for some reason. My mom often asks me why I still sit in back seats and I have no answer other than "I like it for some reason".
Similar to the car seat thing, I usually prefer to sit in one of two seats at the dinner table and feel kinda weird when I have to sit somewhere else
---------------
I've always been a late bloomer. Most recent example is that until relatively recently, i just did not understand romance or kissing. I understand it now, but it took a few years longer than my classmates. Same with other stuff like that, and I still can't say curse words. It's like my body will not let me utter a curse word, even though im a teen and its acceptable, and i want to. Idk why I can't. Really annoys me
---------------
I do this thing sometimes where I see a face or maybe a sound someone makes and I copy it for some reason. I really don't know why, I just do it. It happens sometimes when I read an expression a character makes in a book as well. I also steal most of my humor and jokes from others, which would be another form of this copying.
---------------
I think I have a usual constant emotion. Usually I feel like 📷 or just kinda content. I might be faking a smile a lot, but im not sure at the moment (Figuring it out rn). I can feel emotions though. Usually happiness/thinking something is funny, sometimes sadness but less so than the others, anxious a lot in a bunch of situations. I also have this one memory as a kid where I realized I was similar to a character from some show who almost always had the 📷 face. Take that with a grain of salt however, because I barely remember it so chances are i got something wrong
---------------
I've already mentioned the bag of stuff I used to carry around but there's a few other things I was and still am unreasonably attached to
A plushie of a minecraft enemy, I think I used to bring it places too sometimes?
My og pair of drum sticks. Had them since 4th grade and I get super upset when I leave them somewhere, I worry a lot that they will get stolen or something. I care about a pair of drumsticks like that. It's not reasonable lol
My phone, but I might be attached to it just because I'm a teenager and it's a phone lol
---------------
Feeling empathy for inanimate objects. I don't have any examples at the moment of writing but maybe I'll come up with something.
---------------
Other quirks and weird things I do that could be related:
I lay weirdly in bed sometimes, it's hard to describe. It's like I'm doing a plank, but putting a ton of pressure
I used to lay on my belly with my legs up when i was going to bed, sometimes swinging them around. I don't do this anymore.
---------------
I get hyperfixations a LOT. Basically if I like something I might latch on to that something for a few weeks or months till I eventually am not interested. I also intensely hyperfixate when I do some activities. I'll be doing a hobby and either not realize or keep putting off that I need to do something, like pee or eat or drink.
---‐------------
Social problems
I have a few social problems and difficulties.
It's weird; I can hold a conversation with a friend, family member, or some teachers (but not lead it) pretty easily, but with tons of other people I get anxiety or selective mutism or both. Basically I'm better when it's someone I know
While I can converse with people I know better than those I don't, no matter what there's a bit of awkwardness and sometimes confusion, at least on my end. Like I said, I can't really lead a conversation and when the other person runs out of things to say I often don't have anything to say and we just sit in silence for a few seconds.
I can barely do small talk. Best I can to is a somewhat humorous "so the weather, huh" in most cases.
I have trouble understanding sarcasm sometimes and differentiating between sarcasm and serious stuff. Not all the time, but enough to be annoying. It's even more difficult on text.
I have a very odd sense of empathy. I often don't feel it that greatly or.sometimws not at all, like I have to consciously think about it, but sometimes something just gets me in the right way. A good example is the recent earthquake in Turkey(?), which made me really sad when I saw it.
I do something I heard that might be a sign of autism, called parallel play. It's basically when you and another person hang out together but do different things. I do this with cousins or friends sometimes and I enjoy it! Idk why, maybe the idea of being with someone even if we're doing different things is comforting.
----------------
I know that autistic people often have trouble making friends but I have plenty of friends rn. I met most of them through others however. Those original friends, I don't really remember how I got them. And in terms of childhood friends, like elementary school, I did have them but I don't remember how we met and I can't ask them because either they've moved away or I've drifted away from them.
----------------
So, if I am on the spectrum, I must either be pretty low needs or I'm really good at masking my symptoms. I seem to be able to function pretty well with life, relative to others with autism. I just have some weird quirks about me. I do have a history of trying to find something wrong with me, I'll latch on to mental illnesses or disabilities sometimes and try to figure out if I have them. The only I've had a real possibility of having so far is some kind of anxiety disorder (but im not here to talk about that) and now autism or another neurodivergency.
Also worth noting, my parents, especially my dad, work with kids with learning disabilities and stuff like that daily (mom is a reading teacher, dad is a speech teacher and i think he used to work with kids with disabilities privately as a second job when my mom didnt work) so I feel they they'd know if I was on spectrum? Unless a) I'm low needs enough that they never realized or b) they're biased because I'm their child so they wouldn't think I'm on the spectrum at all, and would never test me or anything.
I'd mainly be getting this diagnosis for myself as I doubt I really need any help or something. I struggle with imposter syndrome and it's really drains me, so knowing a yes or know about something like this would make me feel a whole lot better (I hope). Maybe give me a bit more confidence. It would also help me understand myself a bit better because then I'd know that I'm not just a weirdo because I'm a weirdo, but that I'm a weirdo because of a disorder.
Thank you for reading!

2023.03.29 05:05 Fantastic_Beans Sometimes I wonder how I survived childhood

I grew up towards the end of the free range child era and with that comes a lot of stupid close calls stories. I just found this sub and it brought some of those memories back, so I thought I'd share!
Story #1
My parents bought a house at the very edge of a developing subdivision. Backing right up to our backyard was a cow field full of black angus steers. I assume those boys have long since been bought off the shelf at the meat section of a grocery store. Anyways, from time to time, a cow would figure out it could slip between the barbed wire and end roaming our neighborhood. A favorite past time of mine was to play cowboy and "herd" these thousand pound animals back into the pasture. I was probably 9 or 10 at the time. It's a wonder I never got my ass trampled.
Story #2
Well after a few years, the cows were moved and the pasture was opened up for further development. This meant that there were multiple construction sites wide open for us kids to explore with reckless abandon. My brother and I loved to play in the "quicksand" that formed after a heavy rain.
Let me explain. These construction sites were incredibly muddy due to the leveling that had to be done prior to houses being built. After a heavy rain, the mixture of mud and sand and water would form, well, quicksand. And I mean the real deal. If you stood in this stuff, you would sink. I recall one particular time where I managed to sink in as far as my waist and was having an absolute blast while my brother played rescue hero pulling me out. I remember the mud was like a suction cup once it had you. You couldn't pull someone straight out, you had to pull yourself horizontal and let someone else drag you out with a rope. We thought it was so cool, just like on TV! Yeah, it's a miracle, I tell you.
Story #3
As the development on the neighborhood continued, so did the placement of vital infrastructure. Namely sewer pipes. Yeah, you know where this is going. Miles of massive concrete pipes stretching underground in total darkness? "Sign me up!" Said kid me.
My brother and I would wander that sewage system on the days the workers had off. We were smart enough to leave a trail so we could find our way out again...just not smart enough to not crawl around in a sewer in the first place.
Story #4
On one of the few occasions I stayed in my own backyard, I happened upon this bush with nice, pink flowers that my mom had planted. My lil ADHD ass loved to pick leaves and crumble them up in my hand. Don't know why. My eyes set on my newest victim and I plucked one of the long, pointy leaves to crumble. It produced a clear, sticky sap that wouldn't come off my hands, so I did the most logical thing and licked it to clean it off. Yeah, kids are gross.
Well, to my horror and amazement, this sap was the most blood curdlingly bitter taste that my little taste buds ever did taste. So what did I do? I immediately found my brother and we competed to see who could lick the most bitter sap. What was the plant, you ask? Why, it was oleander, of course.
Story #5
I loved catching creepy crawlies in the garden. As a young kid, you could catch me tearing up the weed guard in mom's garden to see if there was anything cool living underneath. On one such occasion, I remember seeing, out of the corner of my eye, a little, white, wiggling worm.
I turned to stare at my latest find. I'd never seen anything like it. The way this worm danced in and out of the mulch, the way it's two heads flickered. I reached for it, wanting a closer look. Suddenly, there was a flash of white and then it came into focus. It wasn't a white worm. It was the flickering tongue of a cottonmouth viper. Fun fact: they're called cottonmouths because the inside of their mouths are white! They open their mouths and reveal the white inside when they feel threatened.
Story #6
Somehow surviving my adolescence, I ventured down to the beach for vacation one year. It was the evening, my parents were chilling in the spot they'd claimed, and I was screwing around by the tide. About 13 or 14 now, I considered myself quite the photographer. I picked up just about any critter I found to snap a selfy with. Crabs, sea urchins (yeah as if those weren't bad enough), and of course...shells.
I was amazed when I found this perfectly intact, cone shaped shell. It was so pretty, just like the ones sold in the gift shops! Oh, and there was a funny little snail guy inside! I peered at my new friend and took absolute delight in the little leg he prodded my hand with before I eventually tossed him back into the sea.
I found out years later. Yeah, cone snails don't have legs.
So that's all I got for now. I survived to adulthood, somehow, and now I'm a homebody with anxiety. Who woulda thought!

2023.03.29 05:00 CalicoIda GuP conversational drama: Brook

Well since we're on the topic of someone's birthday coming up (Brook's on April 1st) I might as well make a post regarding her having a conversation with some of the Pravda students: Based on this Drama CD also if the characters have [] as part of the dialogue, it's the english translation as there will be some language that Katyusha couldn't understand. Well onto the conversation.
"Brook, I've seen you for some time now and you seem to be getting along with us in the school but there isn't much I know about you. Kay saying you were raised in the deep south according to the paperwork seemed to be falsified. You don't sound like a southerner." Katyusha began speaking as she wanted to get to know Brook a bit more to see where she was truly from.
"Конечно, для таких, как ты, Катюша. Мудрость и любознательность человека может быть такой же глубокой, как само Каспийское море." Brook replied to Katyusha's conversation. Katyusha was feeling uneasy as she wasn't familiar with the language that Brook decided to speak in. [Of course for lady Katyusha such as you. One's wisdom and curiosity could be as deep as the Caspian Sea itself.]
"Uhhh... you aren't sounding like you speak Japanese. Nonna interpret." Katyusha gave the order for Nonna to figure out what Brook was saying.
"Yes." Nonna replied to Katyusha's wording. She turned to Brook and began speaking to her. "Я как никто другой знаю о славе Катюши, которая глубже Байкала и выше Кавказских гор." Nonna would tell Brook. [I know more than anyone else of Katyusha's glory, which is deeper than Lake Baikal, and stands taller than the Caucasus Mountains.]
"Гора Эльбрус на западном Кавказе? Это самая высокая гора, если предположить, что слава Катюши так же высока, как эта гора." Brook would ask if that was true that Katyusha's glory was the tallest mountain in that range. [Mount Elbrus in the west Caucasus? That's the tallest mountain assuming Katyusha's glory is as high as that mountain.]
"Да. Я впечатлен тем, что вы смогли назвать гору. Итак, Брук, откуда вы родом или, чтобы быть более точным, где вы родились?" Nonna would ask Brook where she was from or more specifically, where she was born at. [Yes. I am impressed that you were able to name the mountain. So anyway Brook, where are you from or to be more specific with you, where were you born?]
"Я родился на улице Святого Николая в Одессе. Это столица страны и город, в котором жило больше всего людей. Я родился в Петровском дворце на острове недалеко от главного города. Я младшая из четырех детей." Brook would explain where exactly she was born. Nonna seemed to nod but Katyusha was confused. [I was born at St. Nikolai, Odessa. It's the capital city of the country and one where the most people lived in. I was born in the Pyotrov Palace on an island just outside of the main city. I'm the youngest of four.]
"Nonna, how come I haven't heard of this place? Is it somewhere on the map?" Katyusha would ask as if she was confused about what Brook was talking about.
"Maybe, you can pull out a map and ask for Brook to point to where it is." Nonna told Katyusha that a flat map of the world would be more accurate to gauge where Brook's home town would be in. Katyusha nodded before pulling out a map to see where Brook was from. Nonna turned back to Brook. "Катюша достала для вас карту, она актуальна, так как мы не хотим, чтобы в ней были неточности относительно того, откуда вы родом. Вы можете указать на карте место вашего рождения." Nonna would instruct Brook on where she was regarding the map and where the palace would be located. [Katyusha has pulled out a map for you, it's up to date as we don't want anything inaccurate regarding where you are from. You can point at the map to see if you could give the location of your birth place.]
"Хорошо, я укажу вам место, где я родился." Brook replied to Nonna's request. She began scanning the map for where the palace would be, she finally found the spot of where the palace would be located at almost if she had it stored away in her mind. "Здесь, немного правее на длинной тонкой полоске земли." [Okay, I'll give you a location of where I was born. (One) Here, a little to the right on the long thin strip of land. (Two)]
"Вы родились за пределами самого Нью-Йорка. Я думаю, что вы сами не столько южанин, сколько городской житель. Кажется, теперь я понял, почему вы не говорите так, будто родились по документам, которые дал вам Сандерс." Nonna would finally figure out what Brook was saying regarding she was born. Katyusha nodded as if she was curious. Katyusha was curious about what Nonna and Brook were talking about. [You were born outside of New York City itself. I think you wouldn't come as much of a southerner than a city person yourself. I think I figured out now why you don't sound like you were born from the paperwork Saunders had given you.]
"Nonna where do you know Brook was born?" Katyusha asked if she didn't understand where Brook was from.
"Brook is from New York, maybe Long Island itself. I don't know which part but that is something I will ask her another day." Nonna told Katyusha where Brook was originally from.
"Brook why did you come to Pravda, were you not happy in Saunders?" Katyusha asked Brook directly if she would have found happiness in her school than the one she was previously in.
"Брук, почему вы пришли в "Правду"? Было ли в Сандерсе что-то не так, чем вы были недовольны, что привело к вашей нестабильности и тому, что вам трудно передвигаться?" Nonna asked as if she was one to look at Brook's injuries she had, it wasn't limited to a broken right wrist or a fractured right leg. Maybe there was something wrong with her that wasn't her physical injuries. [Brook, why did you come to Pravda? Was there something wrong in Saunders something you weren't happy about that has driven about your instability and the fact that you have trouble moving around?]
"Всегда Кей был причиной того, что я доводил себя до такого безумия. Я обращался к выпивке всякий раз, когда это становилось слишком тяжело, или бродил по лесу, чтобы посмотреть, смогу ли я провести ночь с парой друзей внутри какого-нибудь убежища, которое мы сделали из дерева и земли." Brook described what was going on and why she acted like this. Nonna couldn't help but feel pity for the person she was trying to help. [It's always Kay that is the reason why I drove myself to insanity like this. I turned to drinking whenever it became too much or wandering around the woods to see if I could spend the night out with a couple of friends inside of some shelter that we have made out of wood and earth.]
"Я думаю, что пить в таком возрасте нехорошо, я также слышал, что вы спрыгнули с борта корабля, когда вас отправляли обратно в США. Это действительно лучший вариант для вас? Я думаю, вы могли бы сделать это лучше." Nonna stated that behavior like this wasn't the best action one person could do. [I think drinking at this age isn't good, I also heard you jumped off the side of the ship when you were being sent back to the US. Is it the really the best option for you to do? I think you could have done better than that.]
Brook sighed while saying this. Nonna could feel a bit of her pain and wanted to try her best to help. [I just wanted to be forgotten about and not leave a trace behind. I was kind of happy in Japan but I don't think I was going to get out from Saunders. Kay isn't a very helpful person either, she says the only way to succeed and live life is with an expensive car, a large house and lots of men and cash. I spoke to some of the people whom I tried to befriend and said I wanted none of those things. I just wanted a place in the middle of nowhere with one man whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I don't know if I would want anything that would seem to be detrimental to one's life?]
"Вы рождены для всего и ничего не хотите в итоге. Все люди разные, Кей - это тот, кто хочет всего, а вы хотите ничего, чтобы уйти от всего. Исходя из того, что вы рассказали мне о своем пребывании в предыдущей школе, Брук, вы, похоже, страдаете от депрессии." Nonna explained to Brook that her feelings why she seemed to be going against the Saunders grain was the fact that she was feeling unhappy and wasn't going to improve. [You were born into everything and want nothing in the end. Everybody is different, Kay is someone who wants everything and you want nothing to get away from everything. Based on what you've told me regarding your time in your previous school, Brook you seem to be suffering from Depression.]
"Думаешь, ты сможешь меня вылечить? Ну, ты не можешь меня исправить." Brook told Nonna that if she was going to make any attempts at fixing her to make her the person whom Kay wanted to make and failed in the process, she was going to be racked with sadness. Nonna looked at Brook as she walked closer to her. [Do you think you can fix me? Well, you can't fix me.]
"Дело не в том, что я пытаюсь тебя исправить. Я просто хочу помочь вам почувствовать себя менее несчастным. Я хочу сделать все возможное, чтобы ты чувствовал себя лучше." Nonna explained to Brook that she only wanted to help her and try to make her feel better and not letting her emotions blindside her. Nonna wrapped her arms around Brook in a hug. "Не нужно прятать свои чувства за маской, которая все время улыбается, и думать, что все хорошо, не нужно убегать от своих чувств. Тебе нужно поговорить со мной, и я смогу понять, что я могу для тебя сделать. Может быть, я смогу выяснить, что тебе нравится, ведь на корабле много лесистых мест, где ты можешь побродить." [It's not that I'm trying to fix you. I just want to help you feel less miserable. I want to do everything I can to make you feel better. (One) You don't have to hide your feelings behind a mask that smiles all the time and thinks everything is okay, you don't have to run away from your feelings. You need to talk to me, and I can figure out what I can do for you. Maybe I can find out what you like, because there are lots of wooded places on the ship where you can wander. (Two)]
"Nonna, is something wrong with Brook?" Katyusha asked Nonna if something seemed to be bothering her friend and what she was saying in her attempt at helping.
"Brook is suffering from emotional distress. Neither Kay nor Saunders have a good track record for helping students with disabilities and emotional issues. Telling them to pull themselves up by the bootstraps when they are facing problems isn't the best way to solving the issue." Nonna explained to Katyusha that their friend was having problems. "We will have to work with her if she is to get over her problems." Nonna continued to run her hand through Brook's soft yet kind of fluffy short brown hair. "Also even though I'm willing to help you out, I am obligated to help others who are suffering from issues."
"Okay." Katyusha told Nonna. She then decided to press a button as if she was calling for someone. "Nina, can you come here for a second?" Even though Katyusha was calling for someone to come down. Nonna needed to ask Brook another question. She released Brook from her arms sensing the latter had calmed down a bit.
"Итак, Брук, почему тебе так нравится "Катюша"?" Nonna asked Brook if there was some reason if she liked Katyusha. Katyusha was listening with curiosity. [So Brook, why do you like Katyusha so much?]
"Мне нравится Катюша, потому что она бесстрашный лидер. Кей просто заботится о вечеринках, в жизни есть что-то большее, чем пляжи и вечеринки. А как же победа, спрашиваю я, и она отвечает "нет". Катюша - лучший лидер, особенно когда я сидела на плечах Наоми и думала, что Катюша выше всех." Brook explained to Nonna why she seemed to look up to Katyusha as one that she wanted to be like. [I like Katyusha as she is a fearless leader. Kay just cares about parties which there is more to life than beaches and cookouts. What about winning I might ask and she says no to winning. Katyusha is the better leader especially when I was riding on Naomi's shoulders thinking Katyusha was above everyone else.]
"Вы восхищаетесь Катюшей?" Nonna asked Brook. Brook nodded yes as her response. Nonna gave a small smile and continued to speak. "Я уважаю то, что ты хочешь быть нашим лидером, даже если сейчас ты слишком высок. Может, ты станешь достаточно высоким, чтобы носить Катюшу на руках, как я." Nonna replied. Then the door opened. Nina wheeled herself into the room with a wheelchair she was sitting in. Her legs looked like they had been bandaged up. She was carrying a second hat on her lap. [You admire Katyusha huh? (One) I respect that you want to be our leader even if you are too tall at this point. Maybe you can be tall enough to carry Katyusha around like me. (Two)]
"Comrade Nina reporting for duty. I had to bring myself all the way here as Alina wasn't available." Nina reported as she wheeled over to Brook. "Katyusha will welcome everyone who is willing to befriend her and I think everyone in this school is willing to help you out. We take a lot of students in and try to help them out the best way we can. It's the reason why so many students are coming to Pravda as they feel more at home here." Nina explained in a chirpy voice. She wanted to try to help out those she could despite her own temporary limitations. Nonna turned to Nina.
"Nina, do you promise that you and Alina will help take care of this girl? I don't want to be take care of Brook and Katyusha at the same time." Nonna asked if she was fine if she could be lended a hand. Nina looked at her as if she was given a special task.
"Of course Nonna, that's what we are here for." Nina replied. She turned to Brook almost if she wanted to give her some advice. "Don't be upset for the past mistakes and what you have done. We're always here to talk to. We've all made mistakes and ended up paying for them but take one day at a time is what Nonna tells us." Nina lifted the ushanka from her lap as this was a special one. It was the color of Nina's hat but it was fitted with a red cross to tell who needed to be watched over like a patient for a doctor.
"Thanks Nina." Brook told Nina before lowering herself down for Nina to put the hat on her. Nina placed the ushanka onto her head. Brook was feeling a little better about herself, maybe these people were here to help her and they were going to welcome her into the family. Brook stood up as Nonna gave her one last hug.
"Welcome to the family of Pravda." Nonna told Brook. Katyusha and Nina were smiling as if they had welcomed a new person to live with them. The road of recovery was going to be a long one but every day counted going forward.
Well how was the story I will post? I wanted to make something regarding one of my Oc's plus with her birthday coming up this weekend, I might as well make some more Brook posts. I also tried my best to make the conversation similar to the Klara one though Klara isn't mentioned in this. On top of that Brook for much of her first year of Pravda (Second year overall) she isn't seen with her trademark twintails as she pretty much lets her hair be fluffy and run down to her shoulders. She regains the trademark from her third year onward.
Don't know how I wrote Nonna, I wanted her to at least be a comforting figure to Brook while being Katyusha's caretaker and one to help others if they fall onto hard times. Let me know if you want more of these?

2023.03.29 04:42 Hakdaghost My DPS EM Candace

My DPS EM Candace
Ok so I recently built Candace (fav character) and gave her her weapon..but my build was 4 piece Glad and the passive for her weapon was wasted. I run her in many teams and decided to make her a vape nuke (still in the process)
Here I will try to explain what her weapon does and if I get something wrong feel free to chip in :)
  1. Her Build (00.00-00.30) time stamp I decided to go 2 piece Gilded and 2 piece Glad to give her EM and 18% more Atk. The only thing I plan to fix as of now is her sans because there’s no Crit damage and she can easily be at 200+ crit damage (yes it makes a big difference) As of now her stats are: 69.3% Crit rate/ 181.4% Crit Damage/ 243 EM/ 115.5% E 46.6 Hydro Damage Bonus. I’m not worried about ER because I’m focused on her E and in other teams I have batteries for her.
  2. Staff of Scarlet Sands passive 1 (00.31-01.09) Her base atk is 1,374 when she’s not in the party, and when added (in my case) it’s increased to 1,500 because 52% of her EM gets converted into Bonus ATK.
3A. Staff of Scarlet Sands passive 2 (01.27-02.41) When her elemental skill or E hits an opponent 28% of her EM will be added on to her ATK (building on top of the first passive). She has this increased damage for 10 seconds and it can stack up to 3 times.
3B. First E hit her ATK increased from 1500 to 1568 Second E hit her Atk increased from 1568 to 1636 Third E hit her ATK increased from 1636 to 1704 Fourth E hit her ATK remained at 1704 because it only stacks 3 times
  1. At the end I FINALLY did a high crit and it went for 19,300 (vape hit I think). Her HP increased becomes she is c2.
I will upload another showing her charged ATK and I’m building a EM yanfei to help vape stay tuned.
The team I’m planning to run is kazuha xiangling yanfei (for pyro resonance it increases ATK) and Candace. Again if I missed anything or even misinterpreted something lmk. Also tell me your personal builds if you found one better :)

2023.03.29 04:40 Rainbow6SiegeCreator What If Legends and Canon Merged? Part 8: A Bolstered Hope

On the barren desert world of Tatooine, we see two sapphire sabers clashing with 4 soldiers surrounding them. After the younger of the two jedi was knocked to the ground, he began to notice a firefight in the orbit above.
Luke: Master, look up in orbit!
Obi-Wan: An Imperial Star destroyer? Here? There hasn’t been one around here in years.
In the battle above, Vader had commanded that the ship be neutralized for capture. Many rebels aboard the now captured ship took defensive positions the Empire prepared to breach the door. As the door was being sliced open, the explosion had sent fragments and smoke throughout the hall, giving the stormtroopers ample time to fire upon their targets. With the rebels on the backpedal, two inconspicuous droids made their way to Princess Leia so she could move the plans away from the ship.
When the captain of the security forces was surrounded, Raymus Antilles became the first target of interrogation by Lord Vader.
Vader: Search the servers for the plans.
Stormtrooper: Yes, my lord.
As a squad of stormtroopers cleared the server room. They began searching through the many files before sending one trooper back to report their lack of files.
Stormtrooper: The plans are not in the primary computer.
Vader: Where are those plans you've transmitted?
Raymus: We have received no such transmissions. This is a consular ship, we're on a diplomatic mission.
Vader: If this is a consular ship where is the ambassador?
Before Captain Antilles could answer, he had succumbed to the choke hold Vader had him in, and when Vader realized this, he had literally tossed him aside.
Vader: Commander, tear this ship apart until you found those plans, and bring me the passengers. I want them alive!!!
As Vader's forces swept through the ship, officers aboard the destroyer had seen an escape pod.
Officer 1: Sir, one of the escape pods has been jettisoned.
Officer 2: Hold your fire. There's no life forms aboard.
Officer 1: We need to report this to Lord Vader.
In one of the darker sections of the ship, 3 stormtroopers came across a woman in a white dress and cloak.
Stormtrooper 1: There's one. Set for stun.
After a brief exchange and 1 stormtrooper is killed, Leia then collapses after getting stunned and the pair of stormtroopers are about to bring her to Vader.
Stormtrooper 1: Inform Lord Vader we found our ambassador.
As Vader had intensely debated the Princess, Obi-wan, Luke, and the Bad Batch had found the escape pod with two droids that Kenobi could definitely recognize, despite not seeing them in almost 20 years.
3PO: Thank the Maker! I'm so glad that you came to rescue us. We came from a ship that rudely sent us away.
Kenobi: C-3PO? R2-D2?
3PO: Yes, I am C-3PO, human/cyborg relations, and this is my counterpart, R2-D2, who has been saying repeatedly to find an Obi-wan Kenobi.
Luke: Then you found him. Master, how do you know these droids?
Kenobi: That is a story for when we return back home.
When the pair of Jedi and clones returned to Kenobi's hut, R2 went to Kenobi and gave him the button input and Leia's message began to play for all of them to see.
Leia: General Kenobi. Years ago. You had served my father in the clone wars, from what he had told me prior to your rescuing me from Daiyu, you were a capable leader of men, and able to win battles for the Republic. Now, the Alliance is in its darkest hour. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.
Obi-Wan had remembered rescuing her on Daiyu almost a decade ago, and knew that this would be a good test for Luke to face Vader. When the Bad Batch were curious to know what the plan was, Obi-wan had begun formulating a rescue attempt.
Kenobi: We need to head to Alderaan and meet with Bail once again. If we can meet with another spy within the network, we can use their ship to slip past the Imperial patrols.
Tech: If we do get caught, I can create some fake chain codes and get us past if we get stopped.
Luke: What do I need to do when we get to Alderaan, Master?
Kenobi: You will stay at my side in case Vader makes a surprise visit.
Luke: Vader? I'm not sure I'm ready for this.
Kenobi: Don't give into fear. It leads to the Dark side.
Luke: Yes, Master.
Aboard the Death Star, Leia is brought to the cell block and Vader begins the interrogation. A black, spherical droid with a syringe containing a truth serum floated into the cell approaching the Princess after a path was cleared.
After the serum entered Leia's system, Vader began to assist the hallucination, and slipped in a little bit of the truth unbeknownst to both parties.
VadeBail: Princess, this is your father. I've been cut off from my royal guard and need to retreat from Imperial Forces. Where is a rebel base I can evacuate to?
Despite Vader's efforts, Leia had resisted the urge to tell the truth, at the cost of immense pain and suffering. When the serum wore off Vader took the droid and reported to Tarkin on the observation deck.
Vader: Her resistance to the mind probe is astonishing, but she will break soon.
Tarkin: I understand, Lord Vader. We have to meet with the rest of the Moffs on level 81C.
As the many officers and Moffs have a heated discussion about the very station they are residing in, Tarkin and Vader come in and their mere presence had stopped the bickering, if only for a small moment.
Moff: The Rebellion, who's too well equipped, mind you, will continue to garner support in the Imperial Senate…
Tarkin: The Imperial Senate is no longer a concern to us. We had just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away for good.
Moff: This cannot be! How will we maintain control without the bureaucracy?
Tarkin: Regional governors, General Tagge. They will keep the systems in line through fear and maintain control over these territories.
Tagge: Again, what of the Rebels? If the plans remain in their hands, they may find a weakness and exploit it.
Vader: The plans in question will return to Imperial custody.
Motti: Any revolt made against this station by the rebels will be a futile gesture, no matter how much data they obtained. We are now standing inside the ultimate power in the universe. My suggestion is that we use it!
Vader: The power you boast about this technological terror, has inflamed and bloated your pride. The ability and decision to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.
As the Moff began to insecurity salvage his pride in the station to Lord Vader of all people, Vader had grown tired of this Moff's rambling and discrediting of the Force, and raised his hand to hold his tongue for the officer, or rather his throat.
Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Tarkin had noticed one of the moffs struggling and realized that Vader's physical domineering would further divide the conference and dely any decisions the Empire had to make.
Tarkin: Enough of this pointless bickering! Vader, release him!
Vader: As you wish.
Motti then began to regain his breathing and a newfound level of fear for the Dark lord.
Tarkin: Vader will extract the location of the Rebel Fortress and crush the Rebellion in one swift stroke by the time this station is operational.
Tarkin then adjourned the meeting and when the officers left, he sent a communication to the cell block.
Tarkin: Bring the princess to the observation deck. Her interrogation is far from over.
Station Trooper: Yes, Sir.
Tarkin: Observation deck, set course of Alderaan.
Officer: Yes, Sir.
When Vader and Tarkin arrived at the observation deck, they were greeted by the troopers escorting Princess Leia. The leader of the Imperial Moffs then mocked a courteous greeting to the rebellious princess and began his own methods of interrogation.
Tarkin: Princess Leia, how lovely to see you again.
Leia: Governor Tarkin, I knew I smelled a certain familiar stench when I was brought on board, as well as who held the leash of this mechanical monster.
Tarkin: Charming to the last. Before I sign the order of your execution, allow yourself to be my guest in unveiling the full power of this station, assuring that no one will be able to oppose the Emperor.
Leia: The tighter you make your grip, Governor, the more star systems will slip right through your fingers.
Tarkin: Not after this little ceremony, my dear. Since this is a special occasion, I will let you choose which planet will be destroyed first. Depending on your choice, I may disregard your execution.
Leia: The fact you have the guts to end my life surprises me. I never took you for someone to do such a thing.
Tarkin: Since you have proven yourself reluctant to give us the location of your rebel base, this station's inaugural target shall be your home planet of Alderaan.
Leia: No. Alderaan is peaceful! We have no arms to use and would never…
Tarkin: Then you would prefer another target? A military target? Then name the system!!!
Leia couldn't maintain her professional facade any longer and knew she had to pick a system to appease the Imperials' demands.
Vader had told Tarkin prior to bringing her to the observation deck that if she was to choose Dantooine, the place had been cleared out by Imperial Forces when they rescued him.
Tarkin: This will be the final time I ask you. Where is the rebel base, child?
Leia: Dantooine. They're… They're on Dantooine.
Tarkin then began to feel satisfied with the answer and continued with his operation to destroy Alderaan and continue to psychologically torment the young princess.
Tarkin: There. You see, Lord Vader? This one is capable of reason. Continue the operation and you may fire when ready.
Leia: What?!
Tarkin: You're far too trusting. Dantooine has been clear of any significant rebel activity for quite some time now and is unworthy of a proper demonstration. I will credit you for giving me some true information, but it was not the information I needed. No need to worry, Your Highness. Your rebel friends will be dealt with soon enough.
As the main superlaser eye of the Death Star began to charge, the people of Alderaan had no idea of their imminent demise from not only galactic records, but off the galactic map entirely. One such fighter, who had been punished years ago for insubordination was about to reenter the fight when the Empire cut his freedom to operate short.
Saw: I understand that my actions on Geonosis years ago were wrong, and that I had made a tactically unsound move against the Empire. I thank the ones that had rescued us and I apologize for the men I abandoned in pursuit of a goal that consumed me and made me act without honor.
Bail: You have served your sentence and we need your ability to lead now more than ever. Are you willing to keep yourself under control when being handed the responsibility of leadership once again?
A captain of the Alderaan protection detail had warned Bail Organa of the Empire's presence in the system with a large moon-like object appearing in their skies.
Saw looked up and saw it from his seat and whispered what would be his final words.
Saw: No… So this is how it ends. I'm ready. I'm coming, Steela.
As the eight small beams of light focused into a single beam of energy, every citizen of Alderaan sought cover, but the energy blast was too much for everything to withstand. When the blast reached the palace, Bail, Breha, Saw and every citizen, structure, and ship, as well of the planet itself, became nothing but debris, asteroids, and a symbol of the Empire's new capability of destruction.
Moments before the destruction of the planet, The Bad Batch had looked around for any sign of Luke's uncle and aunt. When Luke found the group near a destroyed homestead with Owen and Beru shot and beaten to death by Tusken raiders, Luke began to examine the bodies of the closest family he had for a little over half his life. Obi-Wan found the group and saw his apprentice begin shedding tears over who had been his guardians and family, something Kenobi knew his father had, but in Luke's case it was a more stable family than Anakin's. Luke remembered his Uncle showing him the unmarked stones near the homestead belonging to his biological grandmother and his step grandfather, and began carrying them to the burial plots near the two graves made over 2 decades ago. As the Bad Batch helped Luke bury them, Obi-Wan had some words of advice for the young Skywalker that he had regrettably neglected to give Anakin.
Kenobi: I never told your father this because I was too focused on my mission before the Clone Wars. Even though they had no belief in it like we do, they too are now one with the Force. If you need time to think about your path from this point forward, whatever you choose, I will completely understand.
Luke: It's alright, Master Kenobi. I want to continue my path as a Jedi, like my father before me. I understand why they showed me the graves of my grandparents and why they kept the truth about my father from me. When I chose to go with you, when I was a kid, I dedicated myself to the memory of who my father was. I still do so today. I will not let the memories of my father, my uncle, my aunt, nor even my mother be squandered in my path to be a Jedi.
Kenobi: I am so proud of you, Luke. Your father would be too.
Hunter: I understand the loss of a home, Luke. We all do.
Tech: Yes. Change is inevitable and if we take advantage of it, it'll be for the better.
Luke: Thank you all. Master, I have an idea. You and I will take the landspeeder and head into Mos Eisley and we'll find someone to take us to Alderaan and rescue the Princess.
Tech: What about the Marauder? We can take you there just fine.
Kenobi: You will be hunting the Tuskens that destroyed the homestead and killed the Lars family. Wrecker, you will pose as a wanderer and wizard sent to bring oblivion to the Tuskens.
Wrecker: Do I still get to blow stuff up?
Hunter: Yes, Wrecker. You're "commanding" explosions.
Wrecker: Oooooooooohhhhh!!!!!! I LIKE the sound of THAT!
As Wrecker and the Bad Batch tormented the tuskens, Luke and Obi-Wan went into town to find a member of their spy network and sneak them to Alderaan. When they pulled up to the cantina, the bartender gave them notice about the droids needing to stay outside. When a large hairy creature greeted the master, Obi-Wan understood him and beckoned Luke to follow him to the table where the Wookiee sat.
Han: My copilot, Chewbacca, tells me that you and a few others need a ride to Alderaan.
Kenobi: Yes, and you are.
Han: I'm Han Solo. Captain of the Millennium Falcon. What’s the cargo?
Kenobi: Let’s see, about six passengers, two droids, and no questions asked.
Han You are asking me to transport a lot of people. Given that amount, I have to take a certain fee for any extra passengers. I’d say that would get you about… let’s say… 24,000 credits.
Luke: Master, we can get a pretty decent and comfortable ship with that price.
Chewie then “nudged’ Han, although harder than a human is used to, to drop the price because of who they were.
Han: Alright, Chewie. Fine. I’ll drop the price. If we don’t get a real profit from these guys Jabba will leaving more than a slime trail wherever he goes. Alright, gentlemen, I’m willing to drop the price by 30%...
Chewie roared in a slight protest.
Han: Ok, 45%, because he likes your kind of people. Given that discount, you’ll owe me about 13,200 credits.
Kenobi: Sounds reasonable enough, if it’s a fast ship.
Han: Fast ship? You’ve never heard of the Millenium Falcon?! It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs. Name me one other ship that has done that or even anything close to it!
Kenobi: Alright. We’ll pay you 5,040 now, plus 17,400 when we reach Alderaan.
Han: 22? Hmm. Alright, old man, you got yourself a deal. Meet us in Hangar bay 77 when you’re ready.
When the Jedi left the cantina, Chewbacca went to get the repairs underway and prepared for a fight with anyone trying to stop them. Luke then contacted the spies they had assisted and told them to link with the bad batch. When the Clones dropped the ship in one of the other hangar bays, Tech used the forged chain code and met the group. After a confirmational exchange of ships, The Bad Batch received communications about the deal their Jedi commanders had struck with another deep cover spy.
Just as Han was about to leave the cantina himself, he was stopped by a Rodian with a blaster to his chest. When the pair sat back down, Han explained his tightness for credits to the Rodian messenger of Jabba the Hutt, to no avail. After a few more exchanges of quips and empty promises, both fired their blasters at the same time, but Han’s was the shot that landed in the Rodian’s chest, while the Rodian’s landed on the floor, startling the next customer that walked in. After shots were fired, Han paid the bartender for any damages that were caused by the short firefight.
When the Bad batch got to the hangar bay, they decided to wait by the door and split up walking around to blend in and waited on the Jedi as well as the pilot of their transport. As an Imperial squad came up to the pair near the landspeeder, the squad asked for their identification, but the Jedi have been practicing.
Stormtrooper: Let me see your ID’s please.
Obi-Wan: You don’t need to see our identifications.
Stormtrooper: ‘We don’t need to see your identifications.’
Luke: You will apologize for interrupting our business.
Stormtrooper: ‘We apologize for interrupting your business.’
Kenobi: Move along.
Stormtrooper: Move along. Move along.
As Jabba found Solo, who had snuck up behind him and Han made his case personally. After convincing the large slug-like crime lord to give him more time to pay the debt he owed, Boba had a strange suspicion that that turn of events was not going to transpire.
A black hooded figure with a comlink had found the Millenium Falcon and notified the Imperial Garrison to meet him near the hangar bays. The squad commander had asked for directions and the black-hooded spy pointed through the doorway to Bay 77. As the Bad Batch boarded the YT-1300 freighter, Luke and Obi-wan were right behind them and as Han and Chewbacca were about to board and get it up and running, the squad of stormtroopers had rushed into the hangar bay and Han landed a few well-placed shots, before Chewie fired up the engines and escaped the clutches of the sand troopers on Tatooine.
On the other side of the spaceport, another rebel spy group took the Marauder back to Yavin 4 to take the heat off of the Falcon.
When the coast was clear, the group came out of the hidden compartments in the floor of the ship Han used to smuggle spice. Han and Obi-Wan were coming up with a plan that involved disabling the tractor beam, rescuing the princess, and leaving the station. Tech, Han, Luke and Hunter were the only ones that could fit the Stormtrooper armor so they were going to don the disguises. Echo and Kenobi were going to disable the tractor beam, and Wrecker was going to stay with the droids and update the team regarding the ship.
Han had called out for some assistance with a lot of "cargo" to offload and Echo and Tech blasted the four that came up and stripped them of their armor and weapons. Luke then donned his armor and Obi-Wan held onto his apprentice's blade as the pair split up to perform their parts of the plan.
Wrecker stayed in the Falcon and kept a watch on the two droids while the rest of them went along with the plan. When the group made it to the observation post above the hangar, they decided to get their nerves out in the air.
Tech: I can concur with Rex. These Stormtrooper helmets are really difficult to see out of.
Hunter: Can't say I agree. I'm not having any problems seeing out of this.
Echo: Because Tarkin probably saw your helmet design and mass produced it for the stormtrooper design.
Han: Cut it out! I need to think!
Obi-Wan: Echo, you're with me.
Han: Where are you two going?
Kenobi: Disabling the tractor beam like we planned.
Han: Alright, old man. At least someone remembers the plan.
Kenobi: You know your position, Luke. May the Force be with you all.
After the Negotiator and Clone snuck their way to the tractor beam control room, Han and the rest of the "stormtroopers" began "escorting" their wookiee prisoner to the cell block to get the princess from her cell. Whenever the group was alone, they'd have their own conversations about the past, opinions about those they just met, and put them aside when they regrouped.
After X1 had finished his Force-assisted torture, Leia was visibly shaking from the nightmares X1 put into her mind. In her mind, she kept the image of the Jedi who rescued her and the hope that the rebellion remained safe. The lightsaber wielding commander then felt a disturbance in the force and decided to inform his master.
X1: The princess has been interrogated, but I saw in her mind a forest with ruins, it was dark inside what looked like a temple, but the images flashed at a blazing speed. Also, I feel a disturbance in the Force.
Vader: Excellent work, my apprentice. I have felt it too, but it seems familiar to me.
X1: The one that I have felt is someone far younger. Could it possibly be an apprentice? As Vader and X1 continued to identify who they found in the Force, Vader figured it out and ordered X1 to follow him. They were to update Tarkin about who they found.
Back with the Cell block, the officers and other stormtroopers were killed and another officer had tried to check on the cell block from the comms.
Officer: We heard blaster fire coming from your cell block. What’s wrong?
Han: Uh, uh, my apologies. There was a slight weapons malfunction. We’re alright now. Thank you.
Officer. We’ll send a medical team immediately to your location.
Han: NO, no! One of the stray shots triggered a reactor leak and it’s a rather large one. I repeat, large leak, very dangerous.
Officer: Who is this? What’s your Identification number?
Han had no idea what to tell the officer next and in his stress, fired at the comms and sped up the rescue plan. Luke opened the cell to see Leia get up from her cell’s bed/seat and comment about his height.
Luke: Huh? Oh, yeah. I’m Luke Skywalker, we’re here to rescue you. My master is Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The mention of Obi-Wan sparked the Princess to join in the escape and Chewie, Tech, Hunter, and Han were holding back the incoming waves of Stormtroopers trying to find a way out. When Luke found a grate, he told Han to cover him, but Leia took the blaster and covered him while he used the Force to remove the grate. When the wookiee, clones, smuggler, princess, and jedi padawan jumped into the grate, Luke sealed the grate shut with the Force and they found out that they were in the trash compactor.
Back with the elder Jedi and the clone, they found the tractor beam terminals but Echo did his best to act like a droid doing maintenance. What moved the troopers away from the clone was the Jedi making an imaginary stone appear and knock on the walls, forcing the troopers to check it out. When the tractor beam generators were deactivated, the Jedi and Clone went their separate ways back to the Falcon. When Vader and X1 approached Tarkin they gave him their confirmed identities of the jedi.
Vader: He is here.
Tarkin: Obi-Wan Kenobi?
X1: He also has an apprentice with him. We will put an end to these Jedi and grind the rebel’s efforts to a halt.
Tarkin then recieved a communication from another officer about the Princess escaping her cell with some help. Vader then ordered a new squad of troopers to report to the hangar where the Falcon was kept and capture any others who are aboard or nearby.
As the stormtroopers scrambled to find the Princess and her rescue party, the droids stopped the trash compactor from crushing the group, and when they got the uncomfortable plastoid armor off, Luke departed from the group to get his saber back. As the clones, smuggler, and wookiee saw the Falcon in the hangar bay they had to plan how to get past the stormtroopers.
Leia: You came in that thing? You’re much braver than I thought.
Han: See, fuzzball, I told you she would be interested.
Leia: Keep it in check, flyboy.
In the hangar bay, Wrecker began to get a bit nervous and saw the dorids moving the mechanism before hearing stormtroopers secure the hangar, and lots of them. Before X1 joined his master, he planted a tracking beacon on the Falcon so they could escape and lead them to the rebel base. Just as Echo reunited with the group, Obi-wan had begun hearing a breathing along with two sets of footsteps. Vader and Obi-wan activated their blades with Luke’s gaze fixed on Vader, while X1 had his eyes focused on Luke.
Vader: I’ve been waiting for you, Kenobi. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner, now I am the master.
Kenobi: Only a master of evil, Sith.
As the two blades clashed, X1 had begun charging at Luke with his saber ignited. Luke snapped out of the stare of awe and focussed on his first test. He activated his blade before X1’s sapphire blade could cut off the young padawn’s head with a reverse gripped slash.
X1: It’s been a very long while since I clashed blades with a Jedi. Didn't your so-called master teach you about underestimating your opponents?
Luke: You’d be surprised.
As the two continued clashing blades, X1 continued to use his own version of Dun Moc to excite himself and add more fury to his strikes. During one clash, Luke mentioned that he talked too much and broke the saber clash, landed a kick to his gut and pushed him into the adjacent wall knocking him out. Luke then made his way to confront Vader with Obi-Wan. Luke activated his blade and the duo managed to put Vader on the backpedal. When a blast door closed separating Luke and Obi-wan, Obi-wan was alone in facing Vader.
Vader: Your powers are weak, old man. Your apprentice is strong, but not strong enough.
Kenobi: He may have much to learn, but if you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine. You know you can’t win this, Sith.
As Luke saw Vader and his master dueling, even the stormtroopers took an interest in something that hadn’t happened in a little over 3 years for some, but only 3 days for others. This gave the rebels and droids a chance to escape, but Wrecker was ready for a firefight, and almost raring for one. As Luke saw his amster for what would be the last time, Kenobi surrendered himself to the will of the Force. As Vader took a downward slash from Kenobi’s left shoulder across his chest, but to the surprise of both Vader and Luke, Kenobi disappeared into thin air. This was a lesson that Kenobi had learned while in exile and while training Luke. He became one with the force the instant upon death.
Luke: NO!!!
With that, the stormtroopers focussed their fire on the escaping rebels, and Wrecker was having a blast, figuratively and literally. Luke activated his blade and deflected blaster fire with every shot that came his way, and when one shot hit the blast door’s control panel, Vader began to see the battle for himself. Luke had continued to fight off the Imperial blaster fire despite all the others telling him to get on board. As the Blast doors closed, the only voice that got Luke to budge was that of Kenobi. Vader had heard this and slowly became unsettled.
Kenobi Ghost: Run, Luke! Run!!
Vader: Kenobi?
As Luke ran for the Falcon, the crew lifted off and Vader ordered a squad of TIEs to pursue the Falcon.
X1: No, Master. We have to let the ship go.
Vader: You dare disobey me?!
X1: No, Master. I slipped a tracking device into the ship so we can jump to where the base is.
Vader: I see. Your training has served you well.
When the crew escaped, Wrecker and Hunter manned the top and bottom guns to repel the TIE fighter squadron sent to take them down. Luke had secured Leia and allowed himself to break down and let out some of his emotions, although slowly. In that moment, the voices in his head soothing him were Obi-Wan, Yoda, and a Jedi he had met on Mandalore once.
As Han and Chewbacca began maneuvering in ways that the TIEs were missing most of their shots, Wrecker and Hunter had each tagged 2 as Luke stood in the middle of the guns and closed his eyes. He reached out with the Force and threw one fighter into the other to the surprise of the clones in the turrets. After the last of the TIEs were shot down, they began heading back to Yavin, with Luke passed out from exhaustion. Wrecker carried the unconscious padawan to the bunks and when Leia woke up Luke, the group exited the Falcon and Han and Chewie collected the payment and began to store it in the Falcon.
Luke was going into the briefing when he was stopped by a Togruta.
Ahsoka: Luke. Hey. Are you alright?
Luke: Ahsoka? I thought you'd be in a deep cover operation.
Ahsoka: Master Yoda told me to look after you. I know what happened to Master Kenobi.
Luke: I'll meet up with you later. I have to get to this briefing.
As Luke got into the meeting, he listened to how the battle station was going to be attacked. In the Hangar bay, Leia and Chewbacca had been talking to Han to convince him to stay with the rebellion.
Han: With this payment, I can get that slimo off my back and be done with this Empire nonsense.
Leia: If you do get whoever it is you owe out of your life, what will you do next, in case you didn't realize it, your best friend has been part of our Alliance for years.
Han: What?! Why didn't you tell me, scruffy?
Chewie then explained to Han about it and Han had started thinking about ending their friendship with Chewie right then and there.
After the Bad Batch reunited with their ship, they found a familiar Twi'lek and caught up on everything that went on between them. They even met a young Jacen Syndulla for a short while before hearing over the intercom that the Death Star had arrived in their orbit.
Leia: While the Empire may have found our location, we can still prevent them from wiping us out in both the surface and in orbit. Rex, you and Ahsoka prepare the ground forces for a ground assault and any reprisals after we destroy the station. Ahsoka, if Vader joins the ground assault, you take him down. X2, Grey Leader, you and your Squadron know your mission with Gold and Red squadrons.
As every pilot began boarding their fighters and bombers, Luke happened to run into an old friend.
Biggs: Luke?
Luke: Biggs!!!!
Biggs: What are you doing here? I thought you were still shooting womp rats on Tatooine!
Luke: I've actually been with Old Ben and learned some pretty cool skills.
Biggs: you got one of those laser sword things?
Luke: Yeah, but this was my father's.
Biggs: Still, a Jedi! Whaddaya know?!
Luke: It's a lifetime commitment, but we gotta get up there!
Biggs: Right! See you up there.
After the X-wings and Y-wings got up to orbit and every wing reported in.
X2: Grey Leader, Standing by.
Rebel Pilot 1: Gold Leader Standing by.
Rebel Pilot 2: Red 3, standing by.
Rebel Pilot 3: Gold 4, standing by.
Rebel Pilot 4: Red 2, standing by.
Rebel Pilot 5: Red Leader, standing by.
Biggs: Red 7, standing by.
Porkins: Red 6, standing by.
Grey 3: Grey 3, standing by.
Rebel Pilot 6: Gold 3, standing by.
Grey 2: Grey 2, standing by.
After many pilots fell in line, Luke was the last to finish it off before the rebels advanced on the station.
Luke: Red 5, standing by.
Back on the Ground, Wolffe had made himself known to the princess and offered to lead the ground assault when the battle above concluded. The princess granted his request due to his previous service in the Clone Wars.
Wolffe: Mech, get to the walker and take position near the left side of the temple! Massiff Squad, take your positions near the ruins and cover the walker as it comes by. Hunter, Tech, take a few soldiers and do some recon. Wrecker, stay near the AAC-2 tanks and tackle any additional heavy threats. And Rex…
Rex: I got my position, Wolffe, you gonna command the battle from the Walker?
Wolffe: Yes. What about the Commandos?
Rex: Boss, Fixer, cover the Recon team as they surveil the enemy.
Clones and Rebels: Yes, Sir!
As the battle began to rage above the surface of the battle station, Red Squadron handled the fighters, Grey Squadron targeted the turbolasers near the trench, and Gold Squadron was to deliver the ordinance into the exhaust port that was about two meters in diameter.
Inside the Death Star, Stormtroopers and pilots were scrambling to their fighters and X1 reconvened with his master as Vader began laying out the plan.
Vader: X1, You are to reboard your destroyer and take as many troops as you possibly can for a ground assault. You two pilots, with me.
X1: Master, I will lead the ground attack and catch the rebels off guard. After your role in the defense is done, reboard my destroyer. Let them think you are dead or at least out of commission.
Vader: Go to the other side of the planet before the assault begins.
X1: Yes, Master. All ground troops report to the hangar bays and board the Avarice.
When Vader and his TIE escorts joined the battle, the bombers began their attack through the trench. As the trio of TIEs pursued the bombers, many fighters were too occupied by the other fighters and turrets to divert their attention to Vader. In a few decisive moves by the Empire, all the Y-wings but Gold 2 were shot down, Red Leader, Red 6, and Red 9 were shot down.
Luke: Grey Leader, See if you can take off some of those TIEs, a couple of us are going into the trench.
X2: Copy, Red 5. Grey's 4, 3, and 5, go with Red Squadron and take down more of those fighters and turbolasers. Grey's 2 and 6, with me. We have to cover the trench.
Grey Squadron: Yes, Sir!
Gold 2: Red 3, This is Gold 2. Can you take a couple fighters and get the Imperials off me?!
Wedge: Copy, Gold 2.
Luke then switched on the targeting computer and had Red 7 and Red 2 covering him. Vader then made another attack run. Vader then took down the X-wing on the right and Luke realized that it was his best friend. After Luke was by himself, another voice spoke to him.
Kenobi Ghost: Use the Force, Luke.
With those words, Luke switched off his targeting computer and everyone monitoring Luke noticed.
Vader: The Force is strong with this one.
Rebel officer: Luke, you switched off your targeting computer. What's wrong?
Luke: Nothing. I'm alright.
When Vader had locked onto Luke's X-wing, a stray barrage of blaster bolts destroyed the TIE on Vader's right. This caught Luke and Vader by surprise, but Luke heard a familiar whoop from the smuggler who helped rescue the princess. When the TIE on Vader's left went Rogue and escaped the trench, Vader lost control of his fighter and flew out of the trench.
As Tarkin found a straight shot to the planet, Luke was speeding ever closer to the exhaust port.
Han: You're all clear, kid! Now let's blow this thing and go home!!!
As Luke took the shot, every rebel had their fingers crossed, and every Imperial Moff and officer that remained on the station had kept doing their duties and hoped that the rebels were quashed. As the proton torpedoes entered the port and Luke pulled up with every rebel ship, including the Falcon evacuated the battle station, one large explosion put an end to 2 decades of oppression on a large scale.
Han: Great shot, kid! That was one in a million!
After some more encouraging words from Obi-Wan's ghost. Luke came down from the adrenaline in his system and when the rebels landed, R2 had to go into the repair room and the rebels prepared a ceremony awarding Luke, Han, Chewbacca, Wedge, X2, and many others. Ahsoka and Rex were watching it and the togruta began to tear up because Luke's actions reflected that of her master.
Rex: I recognize that kind of flying anywhere in the galaxy.
Ahsoka: That's our Skyguy.
The following day, the rebels had prepared escape plans for the Empire's revenge. The AT-TE was positioned in a hidden side of the temple and covered in camouflage. The rebels and Clone specialists took their positions as Hunter led the Recon team of Tech, a few rebels, with Boss and Fixer covering their flanks.
Back at the base, Wolffe commanded the Vehicles from the AT-TE with Mech taking the pilot seat. As Rex and Ahsoka led the defense, X1 began leading the assault with Crosshair at his side once again.
With the clone recon team, Hunter found Crosshair with X1 and Hunter had to put aside his rage and report back to the Alliance command.
Hunter: Commander, We have a positive ID on the Imperial Assault. Crosshair is second in command.
Rex: I see. Massiff Squad, take your positions by the fountain.
Howzer: Right away, Sir! Boys, we need to hold the fountain. It's gonna be a clean path for the Empire if they don't make it through the ruins.
Tech: Wrecker, can you position yourself near the ruins and beat down any Imperial tanks?
Wrecker: Sure thing, Tech! I'm ready to blow some stuff up!!
When Leia had begun evacuating the transport ships, Luke, Han, Chewie and the princess had to find locations for a rebel base. As X1 began the charge he sent the walkers through the ruins and tanks through the hills. Crosshair stayed in cover moving with every shot he took.
As the Commandos saw X1 join the battle, they threw 2 thermal detonators at him, but X1 saw this coming and blocked it with the Force. As the two commandos fought the Imperial commander in hand to hand, X1 thought that these commandos would be easy pickings. After Fixer landed a mandalorian martial arts combo on the Imperial commander, the now bleeding commander thought that the fun was over. Boss drew his blaster and X1 drew his own and as the two began to fire, X1 threw Fixer towards the other commando. As the two commandos got up, they both charged the secret sith apprentice, but Boss was stabbed by the commander's sapphire blade. The blade had impaled his stomach, and X1 then slashed across the commando' chest. As the Commando collapsed on the ground, Fixer began firing his blaster at the commander, while X1 deflected every shot until the commando ditched the blaster and extended the wrist gauntlet blades and he lunged from above only to be suspended with the Force. After getting thrown, X1, twirled with the blade, cutting through his chest and decapitating the clone. X1 then pursued the rebels and joined his men.
As X2 had begun repairing the systems along with Echo, Shara had begun helping X2 take down the data spike and extracting the information before heading to the AA guns. When X2 had to reach a certain part on a high ledge, he tried jumping for it, but when he leaped high into the air, he grabbed the item and landed on his feet with some struggle. When X2 and Shara got the data extracted, Echo boarded the Marauder and went to pick up the rest of his squad.

In light of the recent posts sharing their stories and experiences, I wanted to create a list of resources for students and their loved ones to hopefully get connected and find support through whatever it is they are going through.
I am a volunteer advocate with PAVSA, so some of these resources may be physically located in Northern Minnesota, but I made sure to include local and remote resources as well.
Feel free to contact me with questions or to share some information and I will update this post if I find any other resources.
