2023.03.29 07:54 RiceFarmersAU Keeping up with Sydney
Currently finishing up my Civil Engineering degree, and it's very disappointing seeing the general engineering grad salaries of about $60/70k in most roles, especially in this economy and with the situation of the current housing market. Benefit of the doubt I could say that some grads earn $80/90k in finance, but from what I've seen in those roles they're working a lot of overtime and generally works out the same if you're comparing hourly rate. Apart from these graduate salaries, I can't see most wages being all that good either. I can't really see salaries moving up quick over time either especially in construction where most companies are bidding as low as possible, trying to save money, with a fair few of them going bust recently.
Moving on, with these salaries you live to work, not work to live. Money's not everything.. but everything needs money. Low wages, and an increasing cost of living looks like a bad combination to me.
On top of the housing market/wage crisis, getting around Sydney is a disaster whether it be by car, bus, or train. I can't see the government/council doing anything about existing infrastructure, for example Victoria Road towards the City - they can't widen it and traffic is only going to get worse over time with a growing population. Rail infrastructure doesn't seem all that good as well with the recent incidents we've had.
Currently deciding to move out west and work in the mines as that's where the money is, and life out there isn't as bad as Sydney's current state.
I was working out in the Hunter Valley for a couple of months, and the lifestyle out there was certainly a lot better. A lot of my coworkers in their mid/late 20s already starting a family just as a comparison of life outside of Sydney - where I know most people in Sydney can't really afford to start a family, let a lone the extra things in life. Salaries in Sydney aren't keeping up with the cost of living and most of us are suffering. These coworkers also had decent houses, decent cars etc and constantly went out on weekends because they could afford to. Mining boom ("bubble") aside, living out there showed me how much greater living was with better wages, and lower cost of living.
I know increasing wages isn't as simple as well - and I don't really have a direct solution to the situation in Sydney. All I can really say now is that moving away from Sydney to say Perth or Queensland and working for better wages and a lower cost of living seems to be the best current solution - and I know most people aren't willing to do that as well everything aside. How I see it is that I've got to move for a better future with Sydney's current situation. Having immigrant parents who moved to a completely country not knowing the language/culture etc, I personally see moving states as something insignificant as a means to a better future for myself.
I can't see Sydney as a viable place to live in anymore in the long run currently.. /rant

2023.03.29 07:12 Independent-Key-8681 This team has never been more frustrating
That's all. Yes, we're not the Spurs or the Rockets, we still have a 0.500 record. But we have expectations, they didn't. We were number one in the West. Everything looked so good in December.
Then we make an absolutely historic collapse that is unprecedented in the NBA. No team has ever been number one in the West as late as we have and failed to make the playoffs. We have a top three toughest schedule in the league left while all our WC rivals below us have cake schedules. Zion is still 2 weeks away from being two weeks away.
But that's not the most frustrating thing. It's the stupid blown lead after blown lead, fake comeback after fake comeback. It's the most ridiculously predictable thing ever. Tonight we had a 20-point lead, a golden opportunity to put the league on notice and slide into the 6th seed. Then CJ makes a stupid flagrant foul that leads to a five-point play. Our offense goes completely non-existent in the fourth.
Oh and top it all off, the Refs and the Media are the same as ever. Draymond doesn't get even a technical for literally kicking another man's head, commentators are biased af toward the Warriors praising Draymond's "spicy" play. It's just hard to keep watching the same bs over and over again...

2023.03.29 06:16 CocaPepsiPepper [Tournament] The Legend of Whitebeard, Edward Newgate
| \"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” -Patrick Rothfuss The desire for freedom is powerful, but the desire to protect family is equally powerful. The order of the World Government is powerful, accepted by citizens and enforced by the Marines. To disagree with the Government is to disagree with the World that they establish. This can force good people to make a choice between freedom and family. But when a man can enforce his own order, establish his family and their freedom through his own power, even against the World's status quo, he will always be able to live with those two great necessities in harmony. The key to this is power. If an entity, whether an individual or a group, wants to be free, they must have the power to do so. The stronger you are, the freer you are. Your strength will scare off certain obstacles, power through others. So, what must you become to be the world's freest? The World's Strongest. The Life of Edward Newgate https://preview.redd.it/zv7y7g1fflqa1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=6c544e0ab48475f72aeba3fd5876825bc2cbc7f3 Edward Newgate was born on Sphinx Island 74 years ago. At a young age, the orphan Newgate found his island too impoverished to pay the Celestial Dragon's tax, the Heavenly Tribute, and thus were denied membership with the World Government. To support his village, Newgate set out to sea as a pirate and used the treasure he gathered to help out monetarily. However, with no one to look forward to coming home to, all Newgate ever desired as a pirate was to have a family. In his young life, Newgate joined the Rocks Pirates under captain Rocks D. Xebec. He stayed as one of the crew's members until Captain Rocks went after God Valley, an incident involving the Celestial Dragons. On God Valley, the Rocks Pirates were defeated by Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp and pirate Gol D. Roger, and the crew disbanded. Newgate went on to form his own pirate crew, the Whitebeard Pirates, with him as their eponymous captain. Among the crew's members during the era preceding the Great Pirate Era were Marco "the Phoenix," "Diamond" Jozu, "Flower Sword" Vista and, for a time, the great samurai of Wano, Kozuki Oden. This crew was known as the only rival to Roger Pirates under Gol D. Roger, and would fight with the crew for days at a time. Newgate and Roger were well known as the greatest pirates of their time, with Newgate having gathered the reputation of " The World's Strongest Man," and were on good enough terms for Roger to borrow Newgate's "brother," Oden, and share the secrets of the Will of D. with Newgate, even offering to tell him where Laugh Tale was. But Newgate refused, as he already had what he wanted from life in his crew: a family. When the Pirate King was executed, with "Golden Lion" Shiki's escape from Impel Down and disappearance, Newgate was the undisputed King of the Seas, the man closest to the One Piece. With the Great Pirate Era, the great pirate Whitebeard, alongside his former Rocks Pirates crew mates Charlotte "Big Mom" Linlin and "The World's Strongest Creature" Kaido, became known as an Emperor of the Sea, an unbeatable force in the New World. Eventually, "Red Hair" Shanks rose to their status as well, and the four pirates were renowned as the Yonko. Perhaps the most dangerous pirates to join the Whitebeard Pirates were the young "Fire Fist" Portgas D. Ace, the only son of the Pirate King, and Marshall D. Teach, the pirate who would one day be known as "Blackbeard." One day, the Whitebeard Pirates' 4th Divison Commander, Thatch, found the Yami Yami no Mi, a Logia Devil Fruit regarded as the most dangerous of all. Marshall D. Teach killed him in cold blood, ate the Devil Fruit and abandoned the ship to form his own pirate crew, the Blackbeard Pirates. Ace chased him down and was captured, then given over to the Marines. The Marines announced his execution. And thus began the Paramount War. The Whitebeard Pirates and their entire fleet invaded Marineford and fought in war against the Navy and the Seven Warlords of the Sea in a war that changed the world. With the additional support of "Straw Hat" Monkey D. Luffy, the Whitebeard Pirates freed Ace, but before he could escape the island, the Navy Admiral "Akainu" Sakazuki killed Ace. As Newgate's crew attempted to escape, the Blackbeard Pirates infiltrated Marineford and fought Newgate himself. At the age of 72, with an incurable illness, no scars from cowardice and a bounty from the World Government of 5,046,000,000 Berries, the great pirate Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate died standing at the hand of Marshall D. "Blackbeard" Teach in the War of the Best at Marineford. Whitebeard's death led to the rise of his former apprentice as the next Emperor of the Sea, the only man who ate two Devil Fruits and lived. All of his territories that he had protected were left to the hands of criminals. The home of the Marines was decimated and they moved their base closer to the New World. But it was the death of the man who stood in front of the throne of the Pirate King and his dying words that sparked a new light in the dying flame of the Great Pirate Era: https://i.redd.it/mxqswiz2flqa1.gif A Full Analysis of the Power of the World's Strongest Man \"It may well be us who will meet our end here today, for that man...\" -Fleet Admiral Sengoku The great enemy of sailors and pirates alike is the anger of the ocean that separates land from land, the sea that traps men wherever they are. Laws will not stop the wave from crashing into the city; battleships will not deter the whirlpool's twirl; the hunger of the Blue will not be satisfied by pleas for mercy. If one is to fight pirates, they may become a bounty hunter that hunts the greatest of pirates to become a rich man. If one wishes to bring down the World Government, they may join the Revolutionary Army under Monkey D. Dragon. But no armies, no Ancient Weapon, no physical prowess will win a war with the sea. You may win every battle, but defeat is inevitable. Even the great powers offered by the Devil Fruits are rendered most useless against the ocean, with those who eat them losing their strength in the sea's presence. In this sense, those with powers are even more vulnerable to the ocean than the average man. If a man held the power to command the waves, and ally himself with the power of the ocean, he would truly be seen as a monster among monsters, for he would possess the power of the world, and the power to destroy the world. That is the power of the Gura Gura no Mi. The Aqua Laguna that threatens the City of Water is a perfect example of this threat. Every action taken around retrieving Nico Robin and the blueprints for Pluton, both by CP9's superhumans and by the Straw Hats allied with Water 7, was based on the threat of the Aqua Laguna. In the end, CP9 had to leave ahead of the storm, and it took both Luffy and Zoro to successfully protect their sea train from crashing into the Aqua Laguna's waves. The dread of Aqua Laguna, at least until the invention of the sea train, was that the entirety of Water 7 would be destroyed, and it is exactly this that makes the ocean so terrifying. The unrelenting strength of the sea that gives life to all can take life on a scale unprecedented if given the inclination. An island with all its history and culture, countless families, unique flora and fauna, iconic landscape and powerful civilizations, can be totally wiped away and returned to sender if the wrath of Mother Nature is stirred in the wrong manner. The Gura Gura no Mi offers its user the weight of tectonic plates, the might of continental landmasses colliding. It can trigger quakes in the earth or surrounding sea with impossible speed and scale, or all the energy therein can be focused directly onto a target. All it takes is a simple punch to disturb the atmosphere on other landmasses horizons away, to threaten islands from across the seas. All it takes is the swing of your arms to leave everyone who's feet touches the same earth as yours at the mercy of the world. However, would this be enough to be seen by the world at large as the World's Strongest Man? The Emperor Blackbeard possesses exactly this cataclysmic potential in addition to a second Devil Fruit, an evil Fruit that cancels the Fruit abilities of all others upon touch, yet he does not enjoy such a reputation. What exactly is the apprentice lacking that the captain held? Whitebeard was born with the rare advantage of the Haki of the Supreme King, or Conqueror's Haki. While all who work toward it can utilize Observation Haki, for superior sensing, and Armament Haki, for invisible armor, Conqueror's Haki allows a man to vanquish armies by the tens of thousands without moving a muscle. Haki is all but essential for those who wish to pass through the first half of the Grand Line and make a name for themselves in the New World. If you possess incredible Haki, then even those with the greatest of Fruit powers would be beneath your boot unless they could match your Haki with their own. Roger took the world by storm with just the might of his Haki, and both his partner Silvers Rayleigh and his apprentice Shanks managed to gain incredible reputations of their own without any Fruit powers. The World's Strongest Swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, was also not in need of superpowers to gain his title. Whitebeard's Haki was advanced to its absolute limits, with there being direct proof of Whitebeard using the same advanced applications of Armament Haki (projecting the force of his attack outward, not needing to touch anything to damage it) and Conqueror's Haki (lacing his attack in the Haki, multiplying the strength of the attack) as Roger, both in style and strength. While it currently unproven that Whitebeard advanced his Observation Haki to the point of seeing the future, the same is true of Roger, and since it can reasonably be suspected that the Pirate King who conquered the world without a Devil Fruit is at least capable of basic Future Sight, the same should be suspected of his equal in Whitebeard who would not be able to properly match him with such a glaring disadvantage. The only Haki techniques that cannot be given to Whitebeard by benefit of the doubt are the internal destruction and Observation Killing techniques that have been demonstrated by only other elite Haki users. The final supplement to Whitebeard's arsenal is his weapon. The naginata, Murakumogiri, is one of only a dozen Supreme Grade Blades in the entire world, other notable examples being Roger's Ace and Mihawk's Yoru. It is as tall as a small building and thus has incredible weight to back up its sharp blade. The durability of the weapon lasted throughout the decades as Whitebeard used it in combat to supplement his tremendous threat to even greater heights, making him just as lethal an opponent as any swordsman. Even without the Gura Gura no Mi, Haki or Murakumogiri, Whitebeard is still an incredible force on account of his body alone. Standing 21'10, Whitebeard was stronger than the giants of War-Land Elbaf, proving such at the Paramount War against even the largest of Vice Admirals. Despite his size, Whitebeard could fight with impressive speed and leap incredible distances. But his toughness was of an unparalleled tier; in old age and sickness, Whitebeard fought through the entire Paramount War while taking hundreds of bullet wounds, stab wound, cannon wounds and even attacks from the Admirals that blew holes in his body and took half his head off, yet even after receiving enough battle scars to kill a small army, Whitebeard was only defeated once the Blackbeard Pirates entered the scene. He died with enough strength to stay standing. At his heyday, Whitebeard was known to hold fights for days without stopping and still be raring to go. From every angle, Whitebeard can only be viewed as an elite among elites. Few could beat him in a purely physical sense, few possessed weaponry that rivaled his, few trained their Haki to the heights that he did, and few ate Devil Fruits that are as powerful as his own. No other character can lay claim to having peaked in every single one of these aspects the way that Whitebeard did. All these things in tandem are what make Edward Newgate known as the World's Strongest Man. The Narrative Importance of Whitebeard https://preview.redd.it/d64gpwyrolqa1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=e1c107a2c6ec6a67a218ad7b3311d7d5acc73892 Alongside Marshall D. Teach and Thatch, Edward Newgate is one of the three characters (besides Edward Weevil, his supposed son) that Oda trusted with pieces of the name of Edward "Thatch" Teach, known popularly in the real world as Blackbeard the Pirate. While Whitebeard is a direct reference to that name, Edward quite literally is the notorious pirate's name. But Edward is not the only important aspect of his name. Newgate can be seen as a reference to the character's importance in the world, with his death opening a New Gate for pirates in the world, changing the world with his demise in the same way the Pirate King did upon his execution. Doflamingo makes clear the necessity of Whitebeard to the order of the Great Pirate Era and directly ties the chaos of the new, worse generation to his absence. Whitebeard has a direct narrative parallel with Shanks, as both Emperors (the only two introduced in the Great Pirate Era) were the mentor figures to the seed of the worst criminals in history, Roger's son Ace and Dragon's son Luffy, respectively. Both were the only Emperors to show up to Marineford, and the only moral ones anyway. While they aren't perfect reflections of each other, there are definite similarities. And besides Ace, Whitebeard was also the "mentor," or predecessor, of Blackbeard. Two of the most important pirates in the entire story, both under the banner of Whitebeard. As far as the Yonko system itself goes, Whitebeard was the one who gave them their initial hype. When Garp introduces the concept of the Yonko system to the audience, he uses Whitebeard's name to establish just how impressive Shanks' membership in the system was. We are able to see this because being a Yonko isn't even the penultimate of Whitebeard's statuses; it is directly overshadowed by his reputation as the World's Strongest Man, which itself was only established well because he was Roger's equal. More simply, the hierarchy of Whitebeard's titles goes The Pirate King's Rival > The World's Strongest Man/Pirate > An Emperor of the Sea The only other rival to Roger was Garp, who himself was introduced in practically the same way as Whitebeard; other notable names include Shiki and Sengoku, but both were definitively overshadowed by Newgate and Garp. This puts Whitebeard among an exclusive duo: Edward Newgate and Monkey D. Garp. The only other people to possess a World's Strongest title are Kaido, the World's Strongest Creature, and Mihawk, the World's Strongest Swordsman. This puts Whitebeard among an exclusive trio: Edward Newgate, Kaido and Dracule Mihawk. And of course, the Four Emperors were a quintet: Edward Newgate, Kaido, Charlotte Linlin and Shanks (later "Blackbeard" Teach, Joy Boy and Buggy as a joke through Mihawk), with Whitebeard singled out as the senior and most notable of them all. On top of these titles, he was seen as the man closest to One Piece, the de-facto Pirate King essentially. No other character has enjoyed the quantity and quality of prestigious reputation that Edward Newgate did, and it is Whitebeard's elderly, sick power that offered the audience a true introduction to the Emperor's power. https://i.redd.it/3v2nspb9rlqa1.gif The introduction, of course, was the War at Marineford. To beat Whitebeard in a war was of such importance, was such a monumental task, that Sengoku had Warlords imprisoned merely for refusing to fight for them and gathered the largest force seen before or since just to hold off the Whitebeard Pirates, despite no pirate besides Newgate himself being remotely strong enough to defeat even a single Navy Admiral. Whitebeard fighting the Marines was the cause for worldwide panic and prayers, no doubt due to the god-like scale of his earthquakes. Whitebeard was not allowed by the story to enter the War until he had already been stabbed, and throughout he suffered heart attacks due to his disease. Everything done by Oda was to show that Whitebeard was no longer the same Pirate King's rival, the true monster he used to be. And Sengoku knew this. Yet he still put every single resource available, powers that could otherwise be used to protect the Celestial Dragons in the Holy Land, on Marineford, knowing the threat they faced better than perhaps anyone else in the Marines. The strongest Admiral, Sakazuki, learned this threat the hard way when he felt the wrath of a half-dead Whitebeard, effected more by just two of his island-devastating punches than the pirate was by his own head being melted away. Conclusion GURARARARARA! Edward Newgate, the great pirate Whitebeard, possessed might that is rarer than generations. Inhuman physical prowess, world-class weapon, primed Haki and cataclysmic Devil Fruit co-existed in one man's body, the body of the pirate regarded as the strongest of them all. The Pirate King could not defeat him in combat; islands and their societies could not withstand his wrath. The world is his weapon as much as his naginata. This unmatched danger culminated in a bounty worth half a kingdom, annulled upon his world-changing demise. It was this power that allowed Whitebeard to be free. It was this power that allowed Whitebeard to have a family. And it was his wise love for his family, their freedom, that allowed him to keep his strength. This is the legend of the World's Strongest Pirate. His name: https://preview.redd.it/lk10afd2tlqa1.png?width=758&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd4ce4e015c1921b0ff4619232d75e1780a4a2ff submitted by CocaPepsiPepper to OnePiecePowerScaling [link] [comments] |
2023.03.29 05:58 LadyAntiope Completed Bingo card with reviews: Re-tellings theme
This is my second year of bingo, so naturally I had to extra challenge myself and do a themed card this time. I set out to do strictly re-tellings, but I ended up broadening the category to include strongly inspired by or incorporating folk tales or mythology. It’s a category I read a lot in anyway, and I love that the genre is exploding to include cultures world-wide. And yet somehow I only ended up with 13 authors of color (out of 40 - counting all the short stories). But this year was about 90% women (with 3 non-binary and one man), so huzzah for feminist re-tellings! And all but four of the authors were new to me. I didn’t quite hit all hard mode, but the theme was my hard mode, really.
I tried to cover a variety of inspiration texts (myths, folk tales, “classic literature,” film) as well as stories from around the world, but I’m missing any representation from Australia and the Pacific Islands as well as South America. The origins of a lot of the stories are Western European, but some have been re-told in settings elsewhere in the world. East Asia also ended up well represented.
I did end up substituting a square this year. Instead of “weird ecology,” I opted for 2018’s “a god is a character” square. There were a couple books that had some weird landscaping in them, but none of them quite fit the spirit of the square. Things like a magical forest in an otherwise standard-issue earthly landscape rather than a fundamentally different ecosystem overall. If anyone has any recs for re-tellings set on far-flung planets, let me know! I tend not to do deep researching – mostly I read somewhat mindfully, hoping for the best, and panic in January.
Here’s the visual card:

Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (LGBTQIA list)
The Iliad from Patroclus’ perspective, but starting with his childhood and teenage years in which he and Achilles grow up together and fall in love. If you remember the Iliad or just the general arc of the story of the Trojan war, then you will go into this knowing it’s going to be a tragedy. That doesn’t make the pain any less exquisite. The time we spend growing up with Patroclus moves from lonely and neglected to beautiful, golden, idyllic. The voice of Patroclus – pacifist and healer – is expertly written and his relationship with god-like Achilles is full of moments that make the heart ache. This is still on the best-seller list for a reason.
Lore Olympus: Volume One by Rachel Smythe (Substitute square: god character, HM)
Olympus is a contemporary city, albeit still only inhabited by gods, and Hades and Persephone might be falling for each other. Graphic novel. The limited color palettes in this volume are excellent, emphasizing mood and character. It’s beautiful to read. The Greek gods are notorious for having very human flaws, and this telling feels very rooted in human emotions. Olympus feels a bit like a college campus in this telling. There’s a lot of loneliness, and trying to figure out how to fit in. It also gets a big content warning for rape.
Hag: Forgotten Folk Tales Retold by Imogen Hermes Gowar, Naomi Booth, Emma Glass, Irenosen Okojie, Daisy Johnson, Natasha Carthew, Eimear McBride, Liv Little, Mahsuda Snaith, Kirsty Logan (2+ authors, HM)
Strange folk tales from every corner of the U.K. are re-imagined – often in contemporary settings – giving women voices they may have been denied in the originals. It took me a long time to read all these short stories because almost every one deals with death or brutality towards women. That’s not to say they all have unhappy endings – indeed, some have joyously vengeful endings – but there’s quiet tragedy and outright violence woven throughout. Powerful stories, strong narrator voices, and often poetic prose, but read when in a strong mental state.
A Clash of Steel: A Treasure Island Remix by C.B. Lee (Historical, HM)
Treasure Island set in 1826 in the South China Sea with a pirate crew of queer misfits sailing for treasure and a better life – plus actual historical Pirate Queen Zheng Yi Sao as Captain Flint. With contemporary prose and an updated cast, this still feels true to the source material with the adventurous quest deciphering maps and clues. Long John Silver doesn’t have an exact analogue, but his surprisingly complex parental feelings come through with found-family bonds as well as a wild ride of birth-family feelings, and a fraught lesbian love interest.
Once & Future by Cory McCarthy, A.R. Capetta (Set in Space, HM)
This time, King Arthur is a queer teenage girl on the run from the big bad capitalist Mercer Corporation – in space! In this re-telling, the characters are aware of the King Arthur story as a myth from Old Earth, but when they find themselves re-incarnating the well-worn pattern, they don’t seem to recognize it beyond the magic sword and Ari’s renewed determination to be a hero. Merlin has lived through every iteration, and has his own interests at play. Our heroes spend a fair bit of time in their space ship or on planet-sized space-stations, though it may be pushing the rule to say it’s 50% actually in space. This is a YA book and it definitely reads that way, but it’s fun. I thought the “Renaissance Faire Planet” was a bit of a stretch and the big bad was almost a caricature of every evil empire, but if you can look past a bit of cheesiness, there’s plenty of sci-fi action, a quick pace, and some intrigue under the surface.
The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid (Standalone, HM)
Hungarian and Jewish folklore plus the early spread of Christianity weave together to create a world where magic manifests differently depending on your religious tradition, the Christians are ardent new converts in charge of a poor besieged country, and persecution abounds. The first person perspective came with a lot of (justified) rage and some pretty violent moments, but I found Évike’s voice to be frustratingly naïve at times. The pacing was uneven, and with a lot of elements in play the story was lacking cohesion. I felt okay on the enemies-to-lovers trope in this one. Overall, this book was redeemed for me by the imagined folk stories woven in, and the heart-warming moments spent in the Jewish community. (I forget the actual names of the religions in the book, but they’re pretty obvious stand-ins.)
These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (Anti-hero, HM)
This time, Romeo and Juliet are in rival gangs in 1926 Shanghai, but their teenage romance is already dead from betrayal at the start of the book and a strange madness is devastating the city they struggle to rule. I usually read-read, but this one I listened to and I loved the narrator! I had a few hang-ups on Juliet as a character (though perfect anti-hero material). Which was tough since she got of lot of screen time, but thankfully we also got Roma and some absolutely wonderful side characters, including a trans woman and a refuses-to-admit-it gay couple. There were some moments of lovely prose, plenty of action, and all the jostling factions in the city were well-balanced in the narrative. First of a series, I definitely want to pick up the second one soon.
All the Murmuring Bones by A.G. Slatter (Book Club, HM)
Drawing primarily on Irish folklore, this is the story of a girl who wants to escape her family obligations - ones that come with generational trauma and greed. It’s a little hard to talk about this one without spoilers since there are basically three distinct sections and each could almost stand as a story on its own, but each depends on the earlier one. Another angry woman in this one, taking matters into her own hands and trying to break spells, break open dark family secrets, and get free of men who are trying very hard to be in charge. I liked the gothic atmosphere, the prose, and probably the middle journey section with fairy-tale creature encounters was my favorite. The family history is also told in mini fairy-tales throughout. The ending fell a bit flat, and I didn’t really connect to the main character, but neither of those were deal-breakers for me.
Spear by Nicola Griffith (Cool Weapon, HM)
From the King Arthur mythos, the story of Percival and the quest for the holy grail, but Percival is a supernatural queer woman who lives in sixth century Wales when the pagan gods still have power. Novella. The story opens slowly and with some very poetic prose to start Peretur’s early life in the wilderness with her mother – a mythic feeling that I fell hard for right off the bat. And yet it also felt very much a story from history – the details of the setting showed the research Griffith put in. I wish it were just a touch longer to give some more room to the relationship developments that get packed into the back half of the book. But the interweaving of historical details, tidbits from myth and story, and imagination was so flawless that this re-telling feels like it could be the "true" history of the story-figure. Even including the gender flip - a skillfully handled "woman dresses as a man to be a knight" trope that works even better when the woman is queer.
Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny (Revolution/Rebellion, HM)
On a distant planet in the far future, the original colonizing crew have set themselves up as gods, specifically taking on the roles of the Hindu pantheon. One member heartily disagrees with how the rest are running things. The prose in this one was a little tough and I’m pretty sure the style is a deliberate choice to make this book feel more akin to reading a religious text. And as a play off of Hesse’s 1922
Siddhartha, since they share the same main character. But some of it may also simply be because it was written in 1967. Still, the content is intriguing. The struggle is between the immortal gods who like being the ones with all the advanced tech (including re-incarnation to transfer themselves into new bodies), and the one who thinks this is some kinda bullshit, why make the inhabitants here go through the dark ages when they could have medicine and electricity now. The premise and watching it play out is the interest here, not so much any emotional investment in the characters.
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White (Name in the Title, HM)
Still asking, “who is the monster?” and giving the same answer even more definitively than the original, this is a re-telling of Frankenstein from Elizabeth’s POV with some distinctive twists. In 2022 I did the Dracula read-along and then promptly decided it was finally time to do Frankenstein as well. Which meant I could now read re-tellings of these classics. Elizabeth, when you get to hear her side, turns out not only to be independent-minded, but also a remarkable anti-hero character trying desperately to maintain the only stability she’s ever known. Though there are a lot of grim happenings and emotional abuse, this version has more hope for humanity than the original (which, imo, has almost none). Also, unlike narrator Viktor, Elizabeth doesn’t make you hate her guts regularly; she’s just trying to survive. The prose was the weak point in this one, especially coming off Mary Shelley, but not detrimentally so.
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher (Author Uses Initials, HM)
Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” leaves plenty of room for embellishing and this novella does so perfectly with nightmare fungus, more rounded-out characters (including a non-binary protagonist), and horrifyingly possessed creatures. Alex is a rational narrator, the best kind for encountering increasingly creepy phenomena. Even with the addition of a no-nonsense mycologist and a competent American doctor, the atmosphere of oppressive, inevitable horror from the original short story suffuses this novella. There certainly are rational lines of thoughts to follow to unravel the mystery of the Ushers’ illnesses, but that doesn’t stop each revelation from setting everyone on edge and fearing madness of themselves. Gothic. Horror. Perfection.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan (Published in 2022, HM)
The Chinese story of Chang’e is the basis for this re-telling, but this focuses on her daughter and starts after the original stories end. Xingyin’s quest is to obtain freedom and forgiveness for her mother’s actions that gained her goddess status, but exiled her to the moon. The world building of the Celestial Kingdom was a highlight of this one for me since I’m not super familiar with the Chinese pantheon. The story itself relied on some classic YA tropes (including a love triangle, one of my least favorites) and I found the narrator’s voice somewhat simplistic. She’s also a very emotional character, which at times was endearing and at others frustrating. Wise, peaceful dragons do make an appearance, though, and there’s some good political intrigue and a few unforeseen twists. An entertaining read overall, and there’s set-up for the second book, but this one wrapped up nicely enough and I’m not feeling pressed to read the second one right away.
The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo (Urban Fantasy, HM)
The Great Gatsby, but from Jordan Baker’s perspective and she’s a bi Vietnamese adoptee in a New York where magic makes all the parties more dazzling. It’s hard to like any of the characters in the Gatsby story, but Jordan Baker as narrator certainly gets more sympathy from me in this go-round. Raised in a rich white family, she carries internalized racism with her, and yet struggles against it every day in a country that is trying to enact a law that will force her to leave. Where the original story condemns classism and unbridled ambition, this story expands its criticism to America’s long history of excluding people of color and the LGBTQ+ community. The prose is gorgeous, and where it overlaps with original scenes it dovetails perfectly. The magic adds an extra shimmer to this story, but doesn’t outshine the character work. I hope this one gets added to curriculums to pair with the original.
Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen (Set in Africa, HM)
Inspired by West African mythology with the Little Mermaid for some plot points. Simi was a human who became a Mami Wata and is struggling to fit into her role bringing home the souls of those who died at sea. One decision endangers all the Mami Wata and sends her on a quest with a boy that will entangle her with the gods and other legendary creatures. This story is chock full of magical beings, young adults attempting to navigate dangerous situations as well as their relationships, and quests of mythic proportions. The dark underbelly of the story is the destruction of West African communities as colonizers take their people into slave ships. Though tragedy runs alongside the story, our heroes mostly manage to stay one step ahead of the worst outcomes. The quest did some meandering, and characterizations were a bit uneven, but I think it really came together in the latter half. The main plot wraps up well, but makes set-up for the next book clear and I do intend to get to it eventually.
A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger (Non-human protagonist, HM)
With roots in Lipan Apache storytelling traditions, this is the story of a cottonmouth snake and a human girl whose worlds run in parallel, but become entangled as they try to save friends and family from existential threats. This technically has two protagonists, but the snake is the one whose chapters are in first person and the human’s are in third person. This also would have been great for the hard mode BIPOC author square since the author is Lipan Apache. I absolutely loved everyone in this story. Nina is an intrepid modern girl and a loner, but with strong family ties; and Ollie is a homebody snake setting out to make his way in the wide world. The friends Ollie makes help him to discover his own bravery, and they are a delightfully colorful bunch of creatures! Nina is trying to help her grandmother and unravel the mysteries of their family’s past and possible connections to the animal people. Read this story to be filled with the love of friendship and family, and hope in the face of climate change and social media ills.
Fractured Fables: A Spindle Splintered & A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow (Timey Wimey, HM)
Zinnia Gray’s illness means she likely won’t live past 21, but when she falls into a Sleeping Beauty parallel universe, she might be able to at least save someone else from that fate. In book two, she’s dealing poorly with life in the “real” world, but busting out into a new fairy tale multi-verse (Snow White’s), and finding even more complications in the re-tellings there. I read both novellas currently out in this series, and our hero does a fair bit of jumping around the fairy tale multiverse which makes it clear that time doesn’t run evenly across it all. It’s not really the focus, but it’s there, and it does affect a couple plot points. I think Alix Harrow read the same book I did about disability in fairy tales (Disfigured by Amanda Leduc) and took it to heart to create her hero in this contemporary fairy tale take. Zinnia’s chronic illness is both from an industrial accident and an embodiment of a fairy tale curse. These books don’t take themselves too seriously, but do handle disability and the emotional impacts that come with it pretty well, I think. Disney’s re-telling style features in book one, and book two gets some darker, more horror-esque takes.
Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones (Mental Health)
The re-telling of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth you didn’t know you needed with extra depth from Germanic folk roots and a little Hades-Persephone flavor. Set in early 19th century Bavaria, protagonist Liesl is a composer stuck helping run her family’s inn; in the woods, Der Erlkönig (the Goblin King), may be a relic of a pagan past, but that doesn’t stop him from meddling with her heart and her family members. Liesl is bipolar and her brother (prodigy violinist) has anxiety and (in book 2) severe depression. Her father is an alcoholic. The family member who gets stolen and must be retrieved is her beautiful sister, the life of the family. Liesl’s wild up and down swings are on full display when she enters the realm of the Goblin King and is trying to navigate her relationship with him, her relationship with her music, and her love for her family. This is an emotional book and you will be angry at almost every character at some point. But it’s also heartbreakingly beautiful. The romance sizzles; it’s unhealthy and you want them to fix it. It’s probably not a book for everyone, but I spent a fevered day and a half devouring it. For extra doses of struggling with mental health, sobbing, and musical composing, read book two – Shadowsong.
In the Shadows of Giants by Lazette Gifford (Self-published, HM)
In the far future, the Norse pantheon ends up pitted against the Chinese pantheon and an elder god in a potential new Ragnarok with Loki trying to avoid the mishaps of the last one – in space! Loki gets some good character work in this book, but other characters are a little light on depth. Though Loki is the main focus, I liked that we got some chapters in the Chinese pantheon as well, getting some insight into the politics of the situation from their perspective – and not everyone in their pantheon is on board with the way things are going. Loki is also not really convinced of teaming up with the rest of his own pantheon again either, but he still has a few good ties there and room to mends some relationships. This wasn’t a stand-out novel for me, but neither do I have any strong complaints. It’s a solid sci-fi-fantasy mix, good prose, and well-paced plotting.
Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste (Runner-up, HM)
It’s 1967 in San Francisco and Lucy (from Dracula) and Bertha (from Jane Eyre) are the titular reluctant immortals trying to keep their tormentors from destroying more lives. This seems like it could be an action-packed super-powered immortal battle, but instead it’s the mundanity of simply surviving as an undead being, escalating slowly into a horrifying body count. Obviously I had to read this after finishing the Dracula read-along. The tone is such a contrast! Where Dracula’s heroes struggle nobly against the darkness, this version is full of quiet desperation and bleakness more fitting as the successor to Jane Eyre. As the action ramps up in the last third, it plays out more like a contemporary horror film, including a strange liminal space in the afterlife and scenes of a modern mansion filled with the decay that the undead bring. The drug haze of California in the 60’s suffuses the story. I’m not entirely convinced this was a re-telling we needed, but I’m also not mad about it.
Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel (BIPOC author)
Kaikeyi is only briefly in the Hindu epic The Ramayana, but her “wicked stepmother” action sets the plot of it in motion. In this novel, she is given a voice and a backstory and a complex world she must navigate as a woman who wants more independence not only for herself, but for all the women of her country. The relationship building in the latter half is one of the highlights of this book. It’s helped by some magic, but Kaikeyi puts in the work to build bonds of love and mutual respect in the royal household where she is youngest of three wives. Rama (her step-son) is the main character in the original epic (a god incarnated to vanquish evil forces), and so the reader is clued in early that disaster will befall the family because of a conflict between Kaikeyi and her husband and Rama; the threat of that tragedy seeps into even the happy parts of the story. Kaikeyi is a champion of early feminism in this telling, but she’s still human with plenty of flaws and struggles and imperfect vision. I found this book to be a bit of a slow build to connect with characters, but by the end I was absolutely tearing up. A powerful telling.
Malice by Heather Walter (Shapeshifters, HM)
In this Sleeping Beauty re-telling (perhaps prequel), the villain is not yet the villain – though society certainly treats her as an outcast – and a forbidden love is blooming. This is a coming of age story for an already young adult character. Alice wants to be accepted (and loved), proving she’s not the evil pariah society thinks she is, but she also wants to escape the role she’s forced into. The build-up of tension between her warring desires is well done. As she discovers her true powers (spoilers since I used it for the shapeshifting square!) she’s put even more at odds with the establishment, and yet her growing love for Princess Aurora gives her hope for a more idyllic outcome than the escape she’s trying to plan. This was another enjoyable but not necessarily a stand-out read for me. Excellent character work for the protagonist and a slower pacing, but never felt like it was dragging. I will definitely read book 2 since this one ends with a bang.
Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust (No Ifs, Ands, or Buts, HM)
This book mushes up elements from Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, and probably others, and spins a whole new story with Persian flair. A poisonous princess is kept hidden away, but when knowledge of her curse comes from a demon, her decisions will have far-reaching consequences for her whole family and the question of who to trust becomes thorny. This was another one where the protagonist is striving to be a good person, caring for her family, and yet she understandably wants to escape her curse and is maybe willing to do some questionable things to make it happen. It’s hard to keep being good when, even though you are loved, you can’t touch anyone and have to live in a gilded cage. This story took a lot of twists and turns, including betrayals of all kinds. The romance elements were laced with emotional tension, but kept sexual feelings to a bare minimum. I felt this could have used a bit of plot streamlining, but I liked the Persian-inspired world, the overall arc of the story, and I felt it wrapped up well for a complex stand-alone.
For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten (Family Matters)
I thought this would be primarily Little Red Riding Hood, but it’s got a huge helping of Beauty and the Beast and a dose of fairy tale sisters tropes as well. Red is the sister that will be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wilderwood in hopes of the gods’ return. Turns out, that whole Wolf and Wilderwood thing is really complicated. This has a lot of elements that I tend to look favorably on – a broody love interest, a magical forest, sibling bonds – but it didn’t quite pull together for me in this book. Both characters in the romance got good development and their choices did make sense for who they were, but it was a very frustrating one to read and caused a lot of drag in the middle. The sibling relationship was much better and the sister who gets to become queen has a wonderfully tragic arc in the name of saving her lost sister. The forest itself and the religion/magic that goes with it don’t get a ton of satisfying explanation, but that’s partly due to everyone actually struggling to figure out how it works. It gets an A+ for creepy atmosphere, though! Imagery from Grimm’s more grim tales abounds and I appreciated the slight edge of horror that creeps in. Not super likely to pick up book 2.
I’ve done a terrible job being concise here, so I’ll try to do a really quick run-down on the short stories. I just listed the first collection on my official bingo turn-in to make it easy, but I like being able to fill in all the slots in my spreadsheet, so there are five things here. Hopefully someone has made it this far down – if so, thank you for reading!
The Bloody Chamber & Other Stories by Angela Carter (collection)
The titular story is one of the better ones – a re-telling of Bluebeard. Covering the classics of western European fairy tales, this collection features a lot of liberated sex with a 70s feminist lean (publication date: 1979). Girls and beasts are the big theme. There were a few excellent ones and several that left me going “but why?”
The Bride of the Blue Wind by Victoria Goddard
Closer to a novelette, but that gave this story room to get some solid world-building in. Bluebeard again, but with Bluebeard being a djinn sort of character. I loved the trader communities and desert setting and the family dynamic with the wife’s sisters.
Tales of Old Gods & New by Kate MacLeod (collection)
This collection had two specific re-tellings: another “Norse gods in the far future” re-telling which was also a sci-fi survival story, and an African inspired goddess trying to escape the cycle of her story. These were two solid ones, some of the other in the collection I felt were unfinished scribbling thoughts for novel-sized stories.
Hunting Monsters series by S.L. Huang (2 short stories, one novella)
This collection mashed up eastern and western settings and stories, including Red Riding Hood, Beauty & the Beast, the Legend of the White Snake, and Hou Yi the Archer. The main characters of the novella are middle-aged women long past the prime in which their original stories took place and I liked that take a lot. The short stories focus on a daughter and deal with culture clashes and parent-child tensions.
A Cathedral of Myth & Bone by Kat Howard (collection)
The feature in this collection is a novelette of the King Arthur story set on a college campus with grad students who are themselves studying the mythos of King Arthur. Most of the other stories in the collection take inspiration from saints’ lives or myth and folk tale tropes (or the concept of storytelling itself) and play with them in new settings. I found a lot more hits than misses in this collection.

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc.
Always mention working safely.
Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books,
you are a qualified applicant.
Explanation of MVO/TTO to save time:
MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.
USPS provides the training. (Maintenance jobs at least. TTO and management...GOOD LUCK)
You don't have to be crazy to work here. We'll train you. Everything but proper email usage. submitted by

| Not sure if the app is acting up, but this is the second day in a row that Santa Rosa is not busy at all. My friend says she’s getting orders and staying busy through this. Not too sure what to think of it. Any other drivers out here in Sonoma county getting orders?? submitted by apal9181 to doordash_drivers [link] [comments] |

2023.03.28 21:42 AbleAd3932 A Sheep In Wolf’s Clothing
I am dyslexic so I pre apologies for the grammar and spelling in this story.
Come on Jixy, I had it made just for you, at least try it on.” “Not gona happen” Jixet said as he wondered what Rebeca could have been thinking when she had this made ‘just for him’ Rebeca looked at him with ‘the face’ anyone who has spent time with humans knows the one. It is the on with the big eyes. “Why is this so important for you?” ask Jixet. Rebeca thought about her answer for a few seconds. “I think this will be good for you, wearing a mask is a sort of magic.” Jixet interrupted “Rebeca I know Vinlil’s size confuses humans, but I am not a child, and I do not believe in magic.” Rebeca gave Jixet another one of those ‘looks’ this one said shut up and let me talk. “I am serous there is science behind it.” Jixet thought about asking how magic can have science behind it but did not want another ‘look’. “It has been proven that people who are engaged in things they think they might be judged for like battles, stage performances and even sex acts show more confidence and willingness to commit to what they are doing is increased by wearing a mask.”
Jixet mulled over what his friend had said. “So, a weird quirk of human psychology is why you want me wearing a mask to try plant-based meat replacement?” “Well sort of but also it is Halloween and wearing a costume is traditional.” Rebeca held up a child sized wolf costume as she said it. To Jixet’s credit he only grumbled a little as she helped him into the elaborate mascot mask that had a moving jaw to allow him to eat without taking it off. The mask had been expensive, so Rebeca had to go a bit cheap on the rest of the outfit. It consisted of a fuzzy gray onesie, some oversized slippers that were likely supposed to be a pun for the term bear feet, those had taken some work to get to fit Jixet, and gray children’s gloves with plastic claws glued on. “Just try to get into the mind set of being a predator. It will be fun I promise.”
This was not fun! Jixet clung to Rebeca’s arm for dear life. All around him things with claws and big teeth, blood, bones, and things jumping out at him. Halloween was the worst thing ever. The plastic claws on Jixet’s costume dug into Rebeca’s arm in a way that was surprisingly painful. “Jixy, buddy ease up a bit it is just decorations people in costumes, none of it is real.” “I know that” Jixet snaped. Wait did Jixet actually just snap at her aggressively do to fear? Rebeca smirked to herself; this plan just might work. “Don’t worry hun we will be at the restaurant soon.” “Why do you insist we walk” Jixet whimpered. “Well, a few reasons, first it is only a short walk and part of the fun of Halloween is showing off your costumes and looking at everyone else’s. Also, with all the people walking around driving would be a pain. Not all the costumes are scarry, look at those kids.” Some young children dressed as either Vinlil or maybe sheep walked by. “No some are just uncanny valley.” Jixet was rather pleased with himself for remembering that human term. “Ok grumpy we are here anyway.”
The restaurant they were meeting Rebeca’s friends at is called the happy cow. Its smiling cow mascot made Jixet uncomfortable for reasons he doesn’t completely understand. “Hay Jixet, Rebeca over here. You guys’ costumes look grate.” It took Jexit a moment to understand the green thing calling them from across the restaurant was Jack. Jack had on nothing but ripped purple pants and green body paint. Lily, the other person at the table was dressed just as strangely. She had on a short black dress and a tall pointed black hat. Lily grinned at both of us “yo Jixet I would not have known it was you if you were not with Rachel.” Jixet was not certain that was a good thing, but Lily seemed to think it was. Not that he thought about it Rachel was dressed oddly as well, she had on a fluffy blue dress and a red clock with a hood. After the two new arrivals sat down Jack told Rachel “I already ordered for you guys I got you the mock chicken salad and Jixet the mushroom burger we talked about.
Rachel had explained to Jixet that humans like mushrooms a lot do to the fact they taste more like meat than any other plant. Jixet whimpered and tells the humans “I don’t know if I am up for this.” Rebeca gave him a stern look “You promised you would try.” Jixet whimpered more. Lily pulled a small mirror out of her purse. “I want you to look into this. See the forwarded facing eyes, the teeth and claws? Tonight, you are a fierce predator, you have to believe that for the mask to work. I have seen Vinlil plays your people are good actors, so act like a wolf.” ‘Act like a wolf’ Jixet fumed to himself suddenly more disgruntled then disgusted. ‘He would show her!’ He would eat the fake meat and like it! It did smell good, rich and earthy like the tubers from Vinlil prime that human had taken to calling space potatoes. Speaking of potatoes this meal came with a side of the tasty golden frys that Jixet had come to love in his time on earth.
Most of the burger was things Jixet has tried before on earth. Fluffy sweet bread, a salty brown liquid made from fermented beans, crisp lettuce and a juicy tomato. But the mushroom itself an oversized flat cap of fungus, was almost imposable to describe, savory, salty, sweet, dry, and wet all at once. It was the single best thing he had ever put in his mouth. Was this what meat test like, is this why predators so crave the forbidden food? The entire universe seemed to come into a wonderful focus. In that moment Jixet understood everything. Why did everything suddenly look so sparkly? It doesn’t matter I am a scary predator.
Jixet bolted down the rest of his food like a starving animal, as his human friands looked on in confusion. “Wow, so mushrooms are a hit” Jack said as he handed Jixet a cup of coconut milk “Drink this and chill while the rest of us finish our meal. Then we will all go out and join the fun.” Jixet’s tail swished with excitement for the fun. He could finally understand why the humans liked this Holladay so much, it was scarry but also fun, and he wanted to be part of it. When the meal was done, and they all headed back out Jixet bounced back and forth between the humans. Sometimes running ahead and sometimes falling behind. Every so often a decoration or costume would scare him, and he hid between the humans’ legs. “I am so proud of you Jixet, you have really gotten into the spirit of things.” Lily praised him. “a good job buddy” Jack joined in.
Jixet barely heard them. Lily’s earlier words echoed in his head ‘tonight you are a predator, act like a wolf’ The world just kept getting more sparkly. He is a well feed wolf surrounded by his pack and that was all that mattered. “Rowrs!” Jixet exclaimed loudly. The humans smile, they are so happy, that makes him happy. He doesn’t know where they are going but he doesn’t care. “We are almost there Jixy you aren’t scared, are you?” Rebeca asks, “I am a wolf” Jixet yelled. Rebeca looked at him a little concerned. But decided that her plan to pull Jixy out of his shell with a bit of play acting must have worked.
The zombie and skeleton decorations gave way to cartoon ghost and black cats as they retched the street fair. They were soon surrounded by children in costumes that ranged from unbearably cute to seriously scarry. One Rebeca found a bit upsetting was a blood covered teddy bear with sharp teeth and a meat clever. But Jixet just responded to it by shouting “look another wolf” Then running off to look at carved pumpkins. After playing a ring toss game and losing badly Jixet took up residency in a nearby bush. He seemed to be having a wonderful time. Jumping out and scaring older children. The bush game ended when Rebeca had to scold him for scaring some little kids. After that Lily had to chase him around the trick or treat stands to prevent Jixet from eating something with animal products in it, and he still managed to eat so much candy he would likely be sick soon. The sugar rush that followed was the stuff of legend. He ran from both to both playing fair games, poking at decorations, and happily squeaking with children. Also, a lot of yelling “I am a wolf aaaaWhoo!”
Jixet was having so much fun. He hunted the little humans in costumes roaring vary fiercely at them. He could not understand why his pack of big humans laughed at his ‘squeaking’ He also got to throw things like balls and rings and bean bags. Eating sweet colorful things was nice to. “Hay that plant has a face!” he pointed at the large orange vegetable. “I am a big bad wolf!” Jixet happily giggled to himself “I’m a wolf!”
Am old lady walked up to Rebeca “Your little boy is such a cute kid” “my boy, what? Oh no he is not” Rebeca tried to say but she was already gone. Rebeca looked at her best friands “do you think we should rain Jixy in? He seems a little out of control.” “This is the most fun I have ever seen him have, let him be a little out of control.” Jack answered. Jixet only lasted about another hour before the sugar crash hit.
Timmy had liked that kid dressed like a wolf, he was fun to play with. But he had fallen into the classic Halloween trap, to much candy all at once. “amacher” Timmy scoffed. He knew you got spread the candy out after all he is 12 that that kid seemed a lot younger maybe only 10. But he was still fun to play with.
Jack settled Jixet into a more comfortable position in his arms, as the group walked back to Rebeca’s house. “Poor guy the sugar crash hit him hard” Rebeca was pretty proud of herself her idea about building Jixet’s confidence up by dressing him up in a costume and taking him to the kiddy fair so nothing would be to stressful, had worked well. “Um guys” Lily said braking into Rebeca’s thoughts “Jessica sent me a text” “so?” Rebeca asks her. “Umm. Let me just read it to you.” ‘Jack told me you guys are planning to take Jixet to that new vegan place. Just don’t give him anything with portabella mush rooms, those things make Vinlil high as kites.’ “Oh Shit!” James said “He is never going to forgive us” Rebeca groaned. As they debated how to tell him what they had done, Jixet shifted in his sleep and happily muttered “I am a wolf Aaawoo.”

2023.03.28 21:37 Glopuss Supermarket (Coles & Woolworths) specials March 29 - April 4
A selection of items “on special” this week in Coles and Woolworths that may be of interest to keto followers. Many are processed so not really suitable for “clean keto”. Victorian data, some may not be available interstate.
Consider house brands may be cheaper than ‘specials’ Alcohol (except no carb beer) excluded. Drink prices exclude recycling deposits. Fruit & Veg probably vary by state, so excluded.
If you are doing an online order, I suggest you also look at the stores' ONLINE ONLY specials as I don't always include all of these, many are multibuys.
‘Locked prices’ might now be considered specials as unlocked prices have increased, but same every week til April so not included as ‘specials’. COLES

2023.03.28 21:10 i_MiLK Flight to the Final Four (Part 1/4) - One Key to San Diego State's Appearance in Houston
So, last year I made a few posts covering all of the Final Four games in a complete, overall, and
long manner. I...............................have no desire to do things like that this year whatsoever. They're long to read and even longer to make, so I feel like I need to change things up for both out sakes. Instead, I'm just going to highlight a key factor that contributed to that certain team's success up to and in the Final Four. These things may be obvious or minute, it'll just depend on how things play out but I want to discuss them anyways.
To start, I wanted to put the San Diego State Aztecs into the spotlight. The South Region representatives have been relying on a top 10 defense to obtain victory once again under head coach Brian Dutcher, and it has led them to the Final Four appearance they seemed destined to make three years ago. There are many things SDSU does to stifle offenses, but the one thing that has propelled the Aztecs on this run has been their
rim protection.
SDSU has been one of the better rim protecting teams in the country over the course of the regular season. They sported an above average 57.5% FG% on close 2s with a defensive close 2 rate of 34.8%. Those are certainly good spots to be at, but teams like Arizona State, USC, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Oklahoma State, UCLA, and
Florida Atlantic had raw numbers that were better. In the tournament, however, the Aztecs' defense at the rim has kicked into overdrive. Over their 4 tournament matches, Aztec opponents are shooting 49.5% at the rim. That would be tied with Arizona State for the 2nd best mark in the country over the whole 2022-23 season, 1.4% higher than Utah Valley's nation-leading mark. SDSU is the only one of the remaining participants in the 2023 NCAA Tournament to have held opponents to under 50% shooting at the rim through their 4 tournament games.
So, why has the Aztecs' rim protection been so dominant in the tourney? Well, back-to-back Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year Nathan Mensah is a significant reason why. I mean, the 6'10 230 center has the 3rd most career blocks in the MWC for a reason. I don't think anyone in this tournament has had a larger defensive impact on a per-minute basis than the Ghanaian big man. Mensah is swatting away 3 shots a game in the tournament while only averaging 19.5 minutes a contest. That's
6.2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! blocks per 40 minutes in this tournament. The only reason he isn't playing a lot more is because SDSU's frontcourt is so deep between him, Keshad Johnson, Jaedon Ledee, and Aguek Arop that Coach Dutcher has to constantly juggle minutes to get the right mix of defensive presence and interior scoring throughout a full game. Mensah is a long, rangy
defensive anchor with expert timing on when to jump and when to rotate in order to affect shots around the rim without fouling.
Here, he does a great job of waiting until Quinerly is already in the air and using the closest hand to the ball to time up the rejection and keep it a 2-possession game with 20 seconds left. Mensah doesn't even need to actually block the shot to affect attempts around the rim. He had a couple of
clutch contests around the rim late in the Creighton game where his size and length bothered potential game-tying baskets into misses. Nathan's rim protection actually helps the Aztecs' offense too. San Diego St is a low-pace low-possession team most of the time, but Nathan's blocks have allowed SDSU to run out in transition and get some clean looks on the break. Their halfcourt offense isn't really, well, efficient in their process, so getting the opportunity to run off steals or blocks is vital for this team to score some easy points. The fact that Mensah doesn't really need help in the paint means the rest of the Aztec players can be closer to their own 3pt line, which allows them to get out on the run quicker and further up the court after Mensah blocks a shot for
threes or
layups. He's not just a shot blocker either, he's very good at moving in space whether in PnR or on a switch. I was extremely impressed with how he handled Brandon Miller in space. I know the Tide's presumptive top 3 pick was dealing with a groin issue, but Mensah did an excellent job of moving with him on the perimeter and helped hold Miller to a 3/19 Sweet 16.
Nathan Mensah isn't the only guy who defends the rim on this squad. It's a total team effort to keep teams from getting clean looks around the basket. San Diego St is filled to the brim with smart, athletic, and physically strong players that all rotate on a string and keep the paint protected. There are so many stout body types in this rotation that it's hard for opposing players to get good looks off unless they have elite size, skill, and/or bounce. Even in the rare instances one of their defenders gets beat, there's always
another Aztec on the back line rotating and challenging at the rim without fouling. SDSU held both Alabama and Creighton to FT rates under 22%. Just look how quickly Jaedon Ledee springs into action on this Alabama
transition possession after Keshad Johnson runs the Crimson Tide player off the 3pt line. I mean, Ledee came from the arc to the rim in an instant to pin that shot on the backboard. Look at where the other SDSU defenders are standing too. One can react to a jumpstop and pivot if the ball tries to work to the strongside wing, there's another guarding a spot up shooter at the top of the arc, and another defender splitting the difference on the weakside (even if they should probably be a bit further from the key to make the closeout easier). That's how quickly SDSU can get in a shell and set up their rim protection and rotations
on a transition possession. No wonder why their defense in the paint is so good.
Rim protection has been one of the primary reasons San Diego St has arrived in the Final Four, but can it lead them to a national championship? Well, duh, of course it can. You'll always have a chance when you make it this hard for teams to get layups or get to the FT line. However, there is still room for healthy skepticism. Alabama shot 3/27 from deep and Creighton was only 2/17 from downtown as well. FAU, UConn, and Miami are all high-upside 3pt shooting teams in their own right as well. Quite frankly, I don't see SDSU getting that much defensive 3pt shooting luck against 4 highly capable shooting teams in a row. Combine that with the Aztecs' own issues generating quality looks in their halfcourt offense and things could get ugly in a hurry if FAU or Miami/UConn are cashing in their looks from deep. At the same time, Brian Dutcher's crew can completely overwhelm anyone in the country with their offensive rebounding, ball pressure, and rim protection. We'll see if the San Diego State Aztecs are the ones cutting down the nets in Houston. If so, look for their rim protection to be a crucial reason why.

2023.03.28 20:50 Pure_Trainer_5605 A Great Clash of Brigantine Crews
A while ago, two friends and myself were enjoying a long session playing as reapers on my brigantine, Raven’s Rose. We had leveled up our flag to V and snuck a few crews, both pirate and skeleton, and we were congratulating ourselves as we sold to the Servant at Reaper’s. Once we finished selling, my friend called out that she saw another brigantine approaching, and fast.
Adrenaline pumping, we prepared the ship to launch from the dock but waited; we wanted to keep any advantage we could, including surprise. As they got closer they turned away, preferring to pass Reaper’s towards New Golden Sands; however, we spotted a level IV GH flag on their mast. Being the bloodthirsty reapers we are, we launched in pursuit, quickly closing the distance, thirsty for a fight.
My crew is pretty good at naval; my helmsman is one of the best I’ve seen, and myself and my other friend are both decent shots and not to keen on the hill holding water. What we’re not good at, tho, is PvP. So when we got within canon range of the other ship and opened fire, and they sent over an extremely deadly pirate, we were no match. He killed two of us and lowered our anchor before being sent to the ferry, but in that time their ship had made quite the distance from the Rose.
With a chip on our shoulder we gave chase, again closing the distance, this time at the southernmost point of the Sea of Thieves, waved off the Red Sea almost splashing the hulls of both ships. Luckily, I was able to board with a lucky shot and lower their anchor just before they reached the Blood Sea, allowing us to riddle them with holes as they were pinched between the Red Sea and the Rose.
But they knew our weakness now, and they knew how to repair just as well as we did. They boarded us again and halted all progress, stalling our efforts just enough to slip away again.
After this my crew decided to sink the two nearby skelly ships; we knew a winning fight and we knew a losing fight, but this was just a stalemate. Our crews were almost exactly equal in skill and synergy, and we didn’t want to find out who would find the winning piece.
That was, until I was bored.
As a reaper V, we used our ability to find other emissaries to seek our adversaries, and it was clear that they were headed to the north-west side of Mermaid’s Hideaway. Now tell me, why would a high-level Gold Hoarder emissary be headed to the north-east side of Mermaid’s? We all know why, so it should go without saying that we beelined to their position.
We made it within the shores of the island before they saw us and orbited Mermaid’s to run south. We intercepted them and exchanged a few shots before the two ships were in a chance yet again. It wasn’t soon after, though, that the water around both ships turned an inky black.
Immediately throwing the Rose into a hard right, my crew made to escape the kraken’s clutches, hitting chainshots on our enemies to immobilize them within the beasts’s maw. We orbited the ink, taking pot shots and occasionally boarding, but they knew what they were doing.
They somehow escaped in one piece, turning west and heading for the Red Sea again. This time, though, they turned at the last minute and ran northeast, with us in tow. As they sailed, a skeleton Galleon arose beside them and began to fire. We on the Rose laughed at their poor luck, but that was before we were faced with the giant teeth of a megalodon as well as an skeleton Galleon of our own. We evaded the megalodon by sailing close to Mermaid’s which we’d circled back to by now, and now it was a battle of four ships: two skeleton galleons, the Rose, and our enemies.
We called over to them to offer a truce, an alliance. It had been enough, we’d said, and commended them for their skill and perseverance. It was a gesture of good faith, and a sign of our fatigue.
That was a mistake.
As our call ended, a boarder jumped onto the deck and killed all 3 of us, lowering our anchor and stopping us between the two skeleton ships. By the time my crew returned from the ferry, their ship was behind us, hammering the waterlogged coffin that was the Rose. Both crews said GG, and I congratulated them on their victory and the well-deserved spoils we had on deck. We went our separate ways, with this battle being the most epic one I had ever experienced in my time on the Sea of Thieves.
