There's a story about sanctity in Mount Athos; once St Paisios was asked if Saint monks existed there, he said they were 30 on the one coast and 20 on the other (eastern or western respectively?) I've been digging in to the history of the draft for the last few weeks, for fun, and I've come across really really interesting draft picks over the years! If people still keep reading, I want to make one of these a day, each day, until the draft. This is day number 3, so it's time to talk about the Baltimore Ravens.
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens are… tougher… to mock up in these. Not only do they have a shorter history than most teams, Ozzie has been the GM for most of it and he’s had way more hits than misses in the first round. His first two picks ever were Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis. He had 24 first round picks and 14 of them were Pro Bowlers and 3 have made the Hall of Fame already. Like seriously, Ozzie solely existed to make my job hard.
But there was one…. unusual… choice, probably driven by desperation more than anything else. The Ravens were tired of starting castoffs at quarterbacks (and won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer, so boo fucking hoo). So in 2003, after drafting Terrell Suggs, they traded a first and a second to New England to select their quarterback of the future.
And with the 19th pick, they selected someone who mostly played weak defenses, only completed 47.8% of his passes, and who posted 15 wins and 30 losses as a college starter.
How does a well run organization spend that much draft stock on someone who, on paper, just clearly doesn’t have the goods?
The story goes that Kyle Boller was a no-name until he threw the ball from the 50 yard line, through the uprights, on one knee and then his draft stock shot up. I can’t find anything credible that says the Ravens were massively influenced by that. Also, I’m not seeing much saying they weren’t. But at the combine he claimed he could, there was buzz for weeks, and he had a packed house when he did it at his Pro Day.. My guy Byron Leftwich then turned around, of course, and claimed he could do it from 55, with a laugh.
Here’s the catch– against the vaunted Pac-10 defenses (lol no), Boller completed 47.8% of his passes. His accuracy was a major question. But the Ravens were desperate, and convinced themselves that it was because Cal didn’t have any good receivers. And Boller was physically gifted, running a 4.6 40, at 235 pounds, and beat almost every WR in the shuttle and vertical leap. The Ravens become more and more enamored with his physical ability. This man sounds like Thor. That year, the other top two quarterbacks were Carson Palmer and Byron Leftwich. And he had the leadership abilities and charisma that Palmer didn’t. And he absolutely had the pocket mobility that Byron didn’t have– hell, convert him to running back if it doesn’t work! The man looked like a prototypical quarterback in every way— except for when he was under center.
So, the Ravens traded up with New England, giving up the 41st pick that round, and their first next year, which turned into Vince Wilfork.
In 9 years in the NFL, Boller notched 20 wins and 27 losses as a starter, completed 56.7% of his passes, and threw 48 touchdowns to 54 picks. In 2008, the Ravens brass were fed up by the sub-par play they thought they were leaving behind with a 1st round QB selection, and drafted the Elite Dragon himself. Boller went on to St Louis where he went 19-0 on track to be the Super Bowl MVP, in my dreams.
Boller remains a classic example of chasing super awesome measurables from guys who just don’t look or play like they’re quarterbacks. Sometimes risks work, and sometimes they don’t.
Meanwhile, Baltimore got to play against Vince Wilfork three times in the postseason.
Honorable mention– Breshad Perriman had done basically nothing to make anyone think of drafting him high, with the sole exception of one unofficially-timed 40, where he clocked in at 4.19. The Ravens took him at 26th, In two years in Baltimore, he got 576 receiving yards.

Been running leagues since they started. I'm a mid spender, always bought the SP ,and with big events (Toty/Tots for example) I might spend £100-150 depending on my pack luck. I've been champion in both Vsa and h2h every season,I don't consider myself amazing at the game, just liked the grind. This game has gone seriously backwards this season,in every single way. Seeing it's UCL next has forced me finally to quit playing,this repetitive cut/paste bs is too much on top of everything else,the list is so long at this point..but here's just a few of them. The timer glitch in LvL, balancing algorithm glitch, scripting,pack percentages, shop pricing issues, market, impossible to make competitive theme squads, abusable game mechanics, cheating, Toty Cancelo's dynamic image, changing stamina on players, Antwans attitude on live streams,every event being either exactly the same or shit or both.... I could go on and on. The fact that EA have lost the FIFA license means it's a dead game soon,to be replaced by EAFootballMobile and I say tf for that. This season definitely isn't the swansong I thought it would be. I'm giving the account to my nephew for his 15th birthday on Saturday. I've got him a stacked bench and will buy him the SP and some FPs to get him started. I'm taking a break from any football game now till something new comes out. Laters.... |

Four regions—the San Juan Basin; Permian Basin; Albuquerque, Bernalillo, and Sandoval Counties; and Las Cruces and Dona Aña County—were identified as areas with clusters of large stationary sources.
Finally, the report finds that current state policies are not adequate to achieve climate pollution reductions from these sources in keeping with the state’s climate goals but identifies ways that climate pollution policies could be designed to both reduce climate pollution and maximize public health benefits for communities where these sources are located. UNM’s Just Transition Grand Challenge initiative and the nonprofit organization PSE Healthy Energy hosted the report. The report was funded by the Environmental Defense Fund.
