Saints Row: Chronicle of a Death Foretold

2023.06.02 16:34 Da_reason_Macron_won Saints Row: Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Saints Row has probably one of the most bizarre evolutions of any game series, going from “we have GTA at home” to a cartoonish tale of punching aliens in the Matrix. Now that the dust is settled over the ReBoot’s grave and the series is more or least death for the foreseeable future I think it would be good to give a look at why it died and why this was (in my opinion) more or less an inevitability.

It’s first death: Can’t go any further.

When Saints Row 4 came out and had the Boss becoming the president of the US and fight aliens in the Matrix, it became common to see people pointing that a series that had based itself in getting wackier with each new entry didn’t really had anywhere left to go. What do you do next? Kill aliens with two dildos instead of one?
This fear became materialized with Gat out of Hell, which was received with a resounding “Meh”. It turns out that going to hell and punching the devil wasn’t any wackier than punching aliens in space. As a result the novelty that had been fueling the series so far was no longer there.
Saints Row had to reinvent itself as its previous formula simply couldn’t be replicated indefinitely.

It’s second death: You are just not that popular.

A factor in Mario’s longevity over Sonic is that you can drop Mario anywhere. Karts, Tennis, weird bejeweled medical practice; it’s the character recognizability itself and not just the platforming that keeps bringing the audiences. Meanwhile Sonic is more intrinsically stuck to its gimmick of speed and feels out of place doing anything else.
Volition may had felt that their characters could undergo a travel similar to Mario’s. Just put Johnny Gat, Kinzie and a few others in the game, slap some purple and the Saint’s brand™ may be enough to sell the players into something completely new.
This something new was Agents of Mayhem, a single player hero shooter. I am probably this game’s only fan. I really felt like this was a good move, to place the characters that had cemented themselves as larger than life wacky übermensch into a colorful adventure out of a GI Joe cartoon.
But audiences didn’t give a fuck. There were certainly a few other factors, the game was buggy at launch and took some time to get fixed, and the marketing seems to have been a bit confused. But ultimately I think the problem is that these characters just were not relevant enough; Volition’s audience is clearly less enamored with Pierce than Nintendo’s is with Mario.
The lesson learned here is that the saints themselves were not a going to bring an audience. Also that single players hero shooters are not going to make it (I am going to die on the hill the this could totally work if you sell it correctly).
Moving forward simply didn’t work. Volition tried, nobody can fault them for lack of creativity. But when new ground is not fertile the solution that people seek is to go back home. The problem was that for Volition there was simply not home to go back to.

It’s third death: You can’t just go back.

Saints Row 2022 is a shitty game, there is no way around it. It’s outdated mechanically, it’s repetitive, and written as a Gen Xer desperately trying to get the Zoomers. But, I think that this was unavoidable.
When the old fans complain about the reboot the solution they offer is that they should have gone back to the way things were in Saints Row 2. A gritty tale about gangsters that took itself seriously even when the situations presented were completely absurd. And although I am sure such a thing would have produced a much better game, I don’t think it would have produced a more financially successful one. And the reason for that is that gangstas are not cool anymore.
The gangsta as a pop culture archetype entered the mainstream around the latte 80s, the popularity of gangsta rap and movies like Boyz n the Hood placed the archetype as a new folk antihero, similar to how its predecessor the gangster had been in prior decades. And here comes Saints Row in 2006 being the gangsta game, and followed in 2008 with a wackier version of it. But this was more or less at the same time as the gangsta started to die out.
Italian gangsters in media arguably ended their swan song in 2007 with the end of The Sopranos, and the gangstas more or less did the same in 2008 with The Wire. There are still crime dramas, but they don’t really follow the old archetype of a marginal son of the streets forging himself a fragile empire with just his guts and his gun. Walter White is many things but he is certainly not “gangsta”.
In that sense Saints Row’s move to its wackier tone makes a lot of sense in retrospect, the outdated archetype just couldn’t be carried into the 2010s. And now trying to go back to it in the 2020s would be an even worst exercise into irrelevance. Saints Row as a franchise simply doesn’t have anywhere left to go.

2023.06.02 16:30 Commitednaddicted97 Dark Side of the moon is underrated.

The album is good and it’s got a handful of good songs. Most of the songs are southern rap style and also eerie sound seems to be the theme in a couple of the songs. Paper bag mask, Cherry P.I.E., Praisethedevil(Boards of Canada), AMPM, Marlboros and White Widow(GERM) Golden Calf (EddieFat Nick) Grayscale(JGRXXN, Ramirez, Black Smurf) My bad for the lame post just making an observation. I relate to $crim when he was still using talking about xans and insomnia but I’m so happy that he remains sober. Shit is g asf my bad It’s a fire album from 2016 Thanks to all the fans and the friends and family on this journey. G59 for life!!!

2023.06.02 16:28 dotcho0111 Is the harp (i guess it was a harp) at the end of Maleficus Geminus a morse code?

Around 11:58, we can hear a stringed instrument-sounding... well. Sound. It sounds a lot like a morse code, and since the last album's finale also ended with one, this one might as well. If it is, has someone decoded it? It sounds a lot like it.

2023.06.02 16:24 Electrical_Ad5686 Favorite Guitar Tone?

When it comes to music in general, I steer away from picking “favorite” anything. However in ZZ Top’s song “Rythymeen”, the Reverend Bill F. Gibbons created what I cannot help but feel is my favorite guitar sound of all time. Jesus it is absolutely perfect. The immaculate solos help as well I guess.

This is my car (OC). Is it too easy to spot the song?
You can't see it in the picture but the first time I heard the song I made the reference to I was serving in the Navy as an electrician onboard a nuclear submarine... So I guess this is a Boat of Car too

2023.06.02 16:20 Reverend_Lazerface She doesn't like me singing

This is more of a vent than an advice request, I know the only real advice is to suck it up and wait it out. I love singing and I have it on good authority, from adults at least, that I'm very good at singing. From 0 to about 1.5 years old, I sang my girl to sleep every single day multiple times a day. Eventually she started to say "no singing" and that switched to a playlist, then to bedtime stories.
She's 2.5yo now and I'm still not allowed to sing to her at bedtime, or most other times either. Not while Im driving, not while Im playing an instrument, she just doesn't like it and if I start she runs over and says "No dada no singing! Please don't sing." I can get away woth it sometimes if its a song from Frozen (which tbf I don't mind because that soundtrack slaps), but otherwise it's a no go.
I know I'm gonna have to get used to her not sharing my interests eventually, but I didn't think it'd be something as natural or ubiquitous as singing. It's an important part of my family, my parents were musical theater actors, my mom does choir and teaches vocal theory, I sang acapella in college and write music. To make things even more frustrating, she's a pretty damned good singer for a todler herself. I know I'm doomcasting but the thought of her growing up to be a fantastic singer with active disinterest in singing together with me sucks.
And now, literally as I wrote that last sentence, I got hit by another wave of emotion realizing that I basically did the same thing to my parents as a kid. Oh boysie. I guess that's as good a place to end a vent as any

2023.06.02 16:14 kairilovr I support Crytek

I understand some are upset but this hate hype on the recent Blond Bond changes is really killing me and I want to get this off my chest.
Some facts:
Hunt: Showdown released in 2018 for 40 dollars.
Devs have updated the systems, UI (for better or worse), added quality of life updates, and innumerable balancing updates.
Added dozens of new weapons, variants, and ammo types.
Brand new map
A new boss, with another incoming.
Tried different things at consumer requests, wildfire and rain map variants, reducing water density and other map updates, etc.
Added countless skins and new hunters, some of them free through events and battle passes.
My argument:
Very fucking few developers support their games this far out from launch and even less do it under free updates.
Crytek isn’t the biggest team and they definitely do not have triple A, Fortnite funding. We, as Hunt enjoyers, cannot expect Crytek to continue updating the game for free without a possibility for some revenue generation.
I support them in the BB update. Blond bonds are a premium currency, the fact that we got some for free at all we should be thankful for. Added hunters and weapon skins are not required to enjoy the game.
Fellow hunters, don’t let your fear of FOMO turn into misplaced hate against a good developer.
For those of you “imagine putting microtransactions in a 40 dollar game” you obviously don’t understand basic economics. The devs have overheard costs and running costs in order to continue working on the game. Crytek is a business and they can’t work for free or else they will go out of business.
And guess what, if they go out of business then the game dies and no longer will we be able to hunt in the bayou after the servers eventually shut down.
Therefore, they need a revenue stream. This is your BB and cosmetic packs, which I will remind you were not part of the base game and were not included in the original 40 dollars you spent on the game.
It seems that some have forgotten that there was a time when games came out, you paid 60 bucks, and that was it. No new skins, maps, updates, bug fixes, etc.
Then we had a time where DLCs were PAID and were the only added content to games.
Now we have reached a wonderful point where good devs continually support their games for free, five years outside of release. Let’s not discourage Crytek from continuing to support their game and player base by bitching over losing free premium currency.
I saw a comment in another post regarding the BB update. homie said: “these prices are ridiculous not even call of duty charges this much for skins”
Well guess what my friend, a new COD releases annually, so that skin you paid ten dollars for, will be obsolete the following november when the entire player base moves on to the next best thing.
The redshirt skin I bought four years ago is still available to me today.
Say what you will and vote with your wallet.
I vote to support this awesome dev. I will be buying BB again and again, because I love this team and I want this game to continue on. This game is 40 dollars very well spent.
See you in the bayou.

2023.06.02 16:09 FlameForeverr So there a genuine reason why carti didnt clear solo dolo pt4?

People came up with a bunch of "possible" reasons as to why carti didnt clear the verse. The most prominent ones were that he doesnt want to start his album rollout this early, or that he's moved on from this "sound" and doesn't want to use it anymore.
But the release of popular completely dismantles both of these points.
It really is a shame, carti has a much longer (and arguably better) verse on there, does he really have to choose one or the other? I guess giving us two songs in the span of a month is too much for him, cant give too much to the fans, right? I dont care if its his label or him, fuck them both.
I get that the weeknd is a much more recognised artist but it really is weak to not clear last minute on someone you supposedly "look up to", only to drop with someone a lot more popular.

2023.06.02 16:01 RandomHypnotica 00s Pop Punk Rate

Hello all-american rejects, mothers of Stacy and Hoobastankarinas! It is finally time to rate one of the subgenres of all time - pop punk! Welcome to the 00s Pop Punk Rate.

Introduction - What Is Pop Punk?

Pop punk is a genre that was invented by musical artist Machine Gun Kelly in the year 2020.
No but really, despite the sendup of it MGK contributed, the subgenre actually has a long and storied history dating back to the 1970s. One could argue bands such as The Ramones were essential foundations for the genre, if not themselves being a pop punk band. A reaction to the emergence of punk in the 70s, pop punk takes the energetic thrashings of punk music and overlays the sensibilities of pop song-crafting. Pop-punk saw an explosion of popularity in the late 90s with the rise of bands such as Blink-182, Green Day and The Offspring, and arguably hit its peak in the 00s with the creation of Van’s Warped Tour, a touring music festival that featured a lineup of some of the biggest pop-punk, post-punk and metal acts of the time. Alongside its rise, it would come to incorporate elements of ska, college rock, emo and post-punk.
Another element of pop-punk that differentiates it from punk is its lyrical focus. While punk’s focus tends to be heavily political and explicitly anti-authoritarian, pop-punk trades that topical focus for poppier subjects - love, lust, drunkenness, and how much the singers truly hate this town (worth mentioning that while this is in general true, especially of more mainstream pop punk acts, there are some notable exceptions).
In discussions of subgenres of punk, pop-punk tends to be largely ignored or snidely dismissed by both pop and punk communities but I think this is unfair. Yes, its lyrical subjects are often sophomoric and steeped in teen angst. Yes, the pop focus can cause the songs to feel derivative for some punk listeners. Yes, the culture surrounding pop punk has given us moments that are unintentionally hilarious. However, there is a reason this genre gained such attention - to borrow a phrase from pop, because it slaps. It takes pop music and thrashes it around. It fills the listener with nostalgic angst with power chord after power chord. It is an ode to the immaturity of youth. It is wildly influential; you can see pop-punk’s fingerprints in tons of modern genres - emo rap, hyperpop, and even Billboard-smashing pop songs.
Pop-punk is fun and raucous and a fantastic send-up to the teenage years many of us reminisce about. Today, it gets its due. Happy rating. - u/seanderlust

BONUS

Okay, so.
The 00s pop punk era of course coincided with the rise of a number of other genres. Seeing an opportunity for a genre overlap in the interest of gaining fans from other genres, indie punk and metal label Fearless Records put out a series of compilation albums over the 00s and 10s. These CDs contained tracks of punk bands doing covers of pop, metal, and various other genres. They referred to it under the umbrella term Punk Goes… and featured such titles as Punk Goes Metal, Punk Goes 80s, and Punk Goes Crunk.
The most popular though, and the one that garnered the most subsequent albums was Punk Goes Pop. In this series, punk bands covered various pop songs that were popular at the time in punkier stylings. Think of it as Now That’s What I Call Music, but if all the songs were sung by Mayday Parade. It was an interesting idea and gained the involved punk bands attention outside of their core fanbase. I mean come on - pop?! AND punk??!! What is this, a crossover episode?
For our bonus rate, we will be rating a sample of tracks that were recorded for the Punk Goes… series. Some of these are quite good! Some of these are certainly pieces of music that musicians decided to record! But which is the best? That is for you, dear popheads, to decide.
  1. Yellowcard - Everywhere
  2. All Time Low - Umbrella
  3. Mayday Parade - When I Grow Up
  4. The Cab - Disturbia
  5. Artist Vs Poet - Bad Romance
  6. The Ready Set - Airplanes
  7. Go Radio - Rolling In The Deep
  8. The Downtown Fiction - Super Bass
  9. Seaway - Closer
To be clear: Rating these songs is optional. You can give a score to one of them, two of them, all nine, or any number in between. You cannot use your 0 or 11 on any of them.

Rules & Instructions

PLEASE READ THESE THOROUGHLY TO AVOID HAVING TO DEAL WITH ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR BALLOT LATER.

  • You must listen to and score every song in the main rate. Ballots with missing scores will not be accepted.
  • Your scores must be on a scale from 1 to 10 and can include one decimal place but no more. So 7.3 is fine, but 7.31 is not.
  • You may give one song in the whole rate a score of 11 and one other a score of 0, so if you want to award these scores, save them for your favourite and least favourite songs in the rate, respectively. You must leave a comment on the songs you give an 11 or a 0, and they must be songs from the main rate, not the bonus.
  • We encourage you to leave comments of your general thoughts or reasoning behind your scores on any songs you wish. If you choose to do so however, they must be in this format, simply leaving one space after your score:
```
One Of THOSE Nights: 3 They wanna be Juicy J feat. The Weeknd soooooo bad ```
Any other formats will get your ballot rejected. WRONG EXAMPLES:
```
I Woke Up In A Car: Yeah but did you wake up in a new Bugatti? (8) (WRONG!)
The Curse Of Curves: 7: me getting a D+ on my trigonometry homework (WRONG!)
```
  • Your ballot must be formatted exactly like the template in the message link, so make sure you use it, or the template in the backup pastebin, for your scores to be accepted.
  • Your scores are not confidential. They will be revealed, along with any comments, with your username attached.
  • DO NOT SABOTAGE the rate by giving outrageously low/high scores for the sole purpose of skewing the results, we reserve the right to exclude any ballot we suspect of this. If you're worried your scores could be mistakenly perceived as such, all you need to do is leave comments explaining the reasoning behind them.
  • If you want to change any of your scores or comments after you've already submitted your ballot, feel free to message myself or my cohost u/seanderlust before the submission deadline to sort it.
Finally, here are the links you'll need to start rating:
2023.06.02 16:01 Awkward_King 2022 Alt Club Rate (Sudan Archives/Kilo Kish/Shygirl)
Hello popheads, or at least the 80 of you who actively do rates, and welcome to the Alt Club Girls Rate. Now you may be wondering "King, what is alt club?" and my answer to you is: I don't know. Alt Club is kind of just a genre I made up!! But club and dance music obviously has an extensive history and it covers a whole range of sounds, and these albums all solidly fit under that umbrella. One thing (for me) that unites these albums, other than being three of my favourites from 2022, is their maximalism: Sudan, Kilo and Shygirl are all mixed media artists who have a clear creative vision for their work and these albums and eras are what they created when they were free of any societal or genre confinement.
Another thing the three of them having common is being black artists in alternative spaces, and how that reflects itself in their music. I think highlighting that they are black does a lot for representation and allowing people to see themselves in these genres, but on the flipside seeing someone only as a 'black artist' can be limiting, and these projects expertly break free of those labels and restrictions. These albums dance from genre to genre like they're going through themed rooms in a nightclub, and I'm so excited for everyone who loves them to get a chance to talk about them, and everyone who is unfamiliar to fall in love with them!
In case you don't know what the fuck is going on, we conveniently have a very helpful introduction to and explanation of what rates are and how they work, and we have a very active and lovely community in the rates discord channel in the popheads discord server who are willing to help any newcomers!! And ofc if you're already a regular here and know exactly what you're doing:
Sudan Archives - Natural Brown Prom Queen
Spotify Apple Music YouTube Tidal
If I cut my hair, hope I grow it long Back long, back time like way before If I wear it straight will they like me more? Like those girls on front covers
- Selfish Soul
One of the primary themes of Natural Brown Prom Queen is homecoming; Sudan (who now lives in LA) is originally from Cincinatti, Ohio (area code #513), and spends a lot of the album tackling the idea of feeling at home or belonging and the restlessness of feeling in between two places. On the albums lead single Home Maker she sings about how she makes her apartment and home studio feel more homely, and compares it to feeling at home with someone you love. In fact, this album was entirely crafted in that home studio over lockdown, with Sudan self producing almost the whole thing. The project is much more electronic than her previous album (the earthy Athena) but is still rooted very firmly in the same sentiments and style, and of course the same brilliant violin work that Sudan is known for woven throughout.
Another thread across the album is Sudan saying things that people are afraid to say, or doing things she might not be supposed to. Milk Me gets outrageously horny, with Sudan singing "your finger up my pussy like a honey stick" over such ethereal production that the subject matter might slip right by you. Sudan tackles her identity as a black women throughout, writing about the colorism she faces being darkskin, or about how her hair ties into her self-worth and other's perception of her on Selfish Soul. Ultimately this album is a lot about her reinventing her image and putting her blackness at the forefront.
"The highest version of myself is a ghetto fabulous girl. I can’t run away from that. It’s time to show these motherfuckers who I am. I’m from Cincinnati, baby.”
Kilo Kish - AMERICAN GURL
Spotify Apple music YouTube Tidal
It's so hard to come to grips like this If I wanted truth this life is it If I wanted you there goes my end
- ATTENTION POLITICIAN
If I were to sum Kilo up as an artist in one word it would be chameleon. Each body of work Kilo's put out, whether it be music, fashion or art, has been an evolution, but not along one linear path. AMERICAN GURL isn't her finale, it's just a representation of where she is at now. The album is the embodiement of a candy store or an arcade, where the album's narrative takes place, sickeningly sweet synthy chaos with deceptively dark lyrical themes of consumerism and tackling what it means to be American looming underneath. On the albums' title track she sings "In a locked box, in a locked draw, will I find me an American Girl", immediately jumping into the idea that as a black artist she doesn't identify with the idea of an 'american girl' that is presented to us, instead that her own american girl is locked up inside of her. On my personal favourite bonus track Star Power, Kilo tackles fame and trying to make it in LA, and how endless that feels. Kilo ponders the idea that in such a capatlist world we consume so many different things, when you strip that all away, what of that actually is you?
The album couldn't be more of a 180 from her debut album six years prior, Reflections in Real Time, an alternative r&b and indie album that is equal parts manifesto and intimate diary. Where in her previous work she opted for minimalism, now is the time for all out maximalism. The use of bright, campy consumerism and Americanism allows Kilo to reflect on fears that are both unanimous and extremely personal: Am I pretty enough? Am I good enough? Why can't I do what somebody else is doing?
"That's the theme of American Gurl — exploring that I am a product of my environment and these are the things that have been put on me in this time so far."
  1. AMERICAN GURL
  2. DEATH FANTASY
  3. DISTRACTIONS III: SPOILED ROTTEN
  7. ATTENTION POLITICIAN
  9. TV BABY V.2 (LATCH KEY MARCH)
  10. ON THE OUTSIDE (JUSTIN'S SONG)
  11. SUPER KO LOVE
  13. GOOD MONEY?
  14. NOT YOUR ACCESSORY
  15. STAR POWER: LA NIGHTMARES
Shygirl - Nymph
Spotify Apple music YouTube Tidal
Yeah it's you that I'm thinking of when I'm feelin' hot Your voice dripping like honey straight from the honey pot Don't stop running on my mind, I can't get enough Is it so bad to just like to be touched?
- Shlut
Nymph is actually a very different debut from Shygirl than what we could've got - she more or less made a record over lockdown, in a similar vein to her fan favourite ep ALIAS, but felt like it was too easy. "If I don't give myself that space to myself, no one is! No one's gonna expect me to do anything else." and thank god she did give herself that challenge, because Nymph is the perfect evolution of Shygirl's character and sound. Taking strong influence from 00's garage and r&b, tracks like the lead Firefly bring the sound into the 2020's with added hyperpop flourishes. Much like Sudan and Kilo, Shygirl is very much a sole visionary, but she has a star studded team of producers behind her to help bring her vision to life consisting of Bloodpop, Danny L Harle, Mura Masa and longtime collaborator and friend Sega Bodega. Album opener Woe is a haunting telling of fame and expectations, with Shygirl singing "When will you see it from my side?". I actually saw Shygirl at the tail end of last year at Printworks in London, which if you're unfamiliar, was a sweaty, gay warehouse used for all kinds of raves and gigs, and I truly can't imagine a setting where Shygirl's music is better suited.
Shygirl also is on a mission to reclaim her own body from everyday misogyny, with Coochie (a bedtime story) being a playful, nursery rhyme esque track about women's bodies and battling the idea that they are weird or undesirable. But of course the overarching theme and imagery of the album is that of a woodland nymph, inspired by romanticism work like Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Nymph as a record is not an attempt to rebrand Shygirl's image, but add depth to it - she can be a provocative, industrial rapper just as well as she can be an ethereal, sensitive artist, and there's no need to limit herself to one or the other.
“When I think of a nymph, I feel an affinity to the ethos of that character – I have felt beguiling, fascinating, mysterious, supernatural and also part of nature. You don’t see people like me in these stories, and I have as much right as anyone else.”
  1. Woe
  2. Come For Me
  3. Shlut / Shlut (feat. Sevdaliza)
  4. Little Bit
  5. Firefly
  6. Coochie (a bedtime story)
  7. Heaven / Heaven (feat. Tinashe)
  8. Nike / Nike (feat. Deto Black)
  9. Poison
  10. Honey
  11. Missin u
  12. Wildfire
  13. Crush (feat. Erika de Casier)
  14. Playboy / Positions
  15. Cleo
Shygirl dropped Nymph_O this year, a side/deluxe album with additional tracks, features & remixes. For the tracks with added features that didn't necessarily remix the song (Shlut, Heaven and Nike) I have added the more popular version on the ballot/playlist (originals for both Shlut and Nike, Tinashe remix for Heaven) but feel free to score whichever version you'd rather
Rules
Most of you know all of this, but if you don’t, please read this!! And if you then still have any questions about the rate process or the formatting of your ballot or anything, feel free to ask away :D
  • You must listen to and submit a score for every song, ballots with missing scores will not be accepted and you will be asked to submit a score
  • Each song must be scored between a 1 and a 10 (with exception of an optional 0 and 11). Scores are allowed to one decimal point but no further, meaning you are allowed to score something a 5.5 or a 9.7, but a 5.42 or 9.75 will make the rate machine act all goofy so please don’t. Also please make sure to use periods and not commas for any decimal places
  • Your 11 and 0 are reserved for one song each in the whole rate. You aren’t obligated to use either of them at all, but they are fun to use
  • Please please use the message format linked in this post, and if that doesn’t work, just use this backup pastebin ballot and send it to me with that.
  • If you want to change any of your scores after you submit them, message me on reddit or discord (king!#2326). So long as it is before the final due date that should be okay :)
  • Your scores are not considered confidential, you are free to talk about them once you have submitted them (you are also free to keep it all to yourself til your reveal) meaning I am also allowed to publicly drag the bad ballots I get
  • Including comments in your ballot is not mandatory, however if you do include any they must be formatted like this:
FLUE: 10 me when i sneeze ✅
Any other formats will simply be rejected, such as:
Ciara: 4, does anyone think capitalism is a good thing? i love ciara i think she's a really interesting artist ❌
ATTENTION POLITICIAN: (9.5) what is joe biden's plan to fix this ❌
Nike: 0 - he told me Nike just tank it (please don't tank Nike) ❌
  • You can also leave album comments, but if you do, make sure you put a colon at the end of the album title, for example:
Album: Nymph: for a shy girl she doesn't seem to be very shy
  • Finally, and this one should be obvious, do not sabotage/tank an album for petty reasons. If you just prefer one album to the others that is completely okay! As long as your ballot seems fair and like you've genuinely given them a chance and justified your possibly controversial scores in your comments. I may ask you to provide further comments/raise your average if I think you are sabotaging, but that is only in dire circumstances.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!! Rate is *tentatively* due on FRIDAY 21ST JULY
2023.06.02 15:47 Eloweasel [TOMT] [music] "say you love me"
Heard it on the radio today at the gym, but my google fu is failing me.
Sounded indie-pop kind of genre. Male singing voice. Tempo is upbeat and fairly fast paced. Not rap, not hiphop, not a slow love ballad.
Chorus went what I thought was something like:
"One of these days won't you say you love me, say you love me, say you love me". The say you love me part repeated a few times at the end of each (or every other) line in the chorus.
I can't think of who it sounds like as a good comparison, this is keeping me awake!
It's none of the top results on Google and doesn't sound anything like them either. I must have heard the lyrics incorrectly, this is probably a "this is the Reebok or the Nike" moment.
Not the Fleetwood Mac song, not Jessie Ware.
2023.06.02 15:34 _SmoothCriminal The ballad of a fallen DPS during progging
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and disgusting websites that I explored,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my basement door,
"'Tis some scrub," I muttered, "tapping at my basement door,
Only this and nothing more."
Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak of December;
And my dying gaming chair wrought its ghost upon the floor,
Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow,
From my smartphones surcease of sorrow, sorrow for the lost score,
For the rare and radiant parse whom Yoshi-P wanted more,
Purple parse here, forevermore.
And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each blackout curtain,
Thrilled me-filled me with fantastic terrors I never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,
"'Tis some scrub entreating entrance at my basement door,
Some scrub entreating entrance at my basement door;
This it is and nothing more."
Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
"Mother," said I, "or Father, truly your nuggies I implore;
But the fact is that I was progging, and you gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my basement door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you." Here I opened wide the door;
Darkness there and nothing more.
Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken and the stillness gave no token,
And the only words spoken was the whispered phrase, “Purple parse score?”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back, “Parse score!”
Merely this and nothing more.
Back into the basement turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
“Surely,” said I, “surely there is something at my windowsill;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore,
Let my chins be still for a moment and this mystery ignored;
’Tis a scrub and nothing more!”
Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flitter and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my basement door,
Perched upon a bust of Sokken just above my basement door,
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.
Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
“Though thy DPS be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Fanfest encore,
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Mogstation store!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
Much I marveled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning—little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living, sweaty neckbeard,
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his basement door,
Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his basement door,
With such a name as “Nevermore.”
But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing farther then he uttered—not a feather then he fluttered,
Till I scarcely more than muttered “Other PFs have flown before,
On the morrow he will leave me, as other PFs have flown before.”
Then the bird said “Nevermore.”
Startled at the stillness broken by a reply so aptly spoken,
“Doubtless,” said I, “what it utters is only spam and nothing more,
Caught from some unhappy master, released to an unmerciful disaster,
Just like the bluebird whom the stars she explored,
Followed fast and followed faster 'till her songs did burden bore,
Of ‘Never—never, more’.”
But the Raven still beguiling all my fancy into smiling,
Straight, I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, bust and door;
Then, upon the waifu figurines and used stockings, I betook myself to thinking,
As if he embodied the despair from wipes in his very core,
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore,
Meant in croaking “Nevermore.”
This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing,
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease, reclining
On the pillow's crusty lining that the lamp-light gloated o’er,
But whose crusty-smelly lining with the lamp-light gloating o’er,
He shall press, ah, nevermore!
Then, methought, the air growing denser, perfumed from an unseen censer,
Swung by cat girls whose footfalls tinkled on the tufted floor.
“Scrub,” I cried, “thy God, Yoshi-P, hath lent thee—by these cat girls he hath sent thee,
Respite—respite and despair from thy memories of the grey parse score;
Quaff, oh quaff these wipes and forget this grey parse score!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
“Role-player!” said I, “thing of evil—prophet still, if bird or devil!,
Whether WoW sent thee, or whether venue tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted,
On this home by Horror haunted—tell me truly, I implore,
Is there—is there balm in the Quicksands? Tell me—tell me, I implore!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
“Role-player!” said I, “thing of evil—prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us—by Yoshi-P we both adore,
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, as a poor and edgy Eorzean,
It shall clasp a sainted DPS number whom the devs name the purple parse score,
Clasp a rare and radiant DPS number whom the devs name purple parse score.”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
“Be those words our sign of parting, troll!” I shrieked, upstarting,
“Get thee back to twitter and tiktok, I implore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! Quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting,
On the pallid bust of Sokken just above my basement door;
And his eyes like the all-seeing Zuckerberg that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor,
Shall be lifted—nevermore!
2023.06.02 15:31 SlyBeanx 84 K10 idles but won’t run under load
My K10 with a 5.3/NV4500 is dying under any load. Can idle just fine. Gen3 DBC with a BTR NS cam, all new sensors (so one could be bad out of the box). Has PSI tune and harness.
Unplugged the MAF/TPS but neither changes anything. Seems like a fuel issue, so I’m going to measure fuel pressure at the rail next. Is there anything else that would cause this?
Probably not VATs as it can idle, has a new pump and fuel pressure regulator but I guess they could be bad out of the box. It had a code for a coil but I swapped coils and it’s gone away for now.
I did a regasket on the engine so if there’s anything internal I could have messed up to cause this I probably did.
Im thinking it’s either some sensor or fuel pump and I need to diagnose it, but wanted to verify I wasn’t missing anything
2023.06.02 15:25 SilentCardiologist51 If you want Sex, make Sex wala Profile.
You gotta signal your sexual nature to women.
By doing this you'll avoid timewaste women who are into relationship and get interest of only top tier variety of hookup girls.
Remember all girls who are into hookups, want a) free alcohol b) drugs c) rapper
Put 3 bottles on the table and now take a photo of your face looking at these bottles
Put talcum powder on table, take photo and act like you are high. This way people who are into drinking, drugs will think you've got solid source of drugs and will see you like a real thug.
Finally, take some cash out from atm and spread it on table, this signals you've always cash available, so you can easily pay her panwala, panipuri wala, drug dealer, birth control dealer.
Women like dreaming, so give them something to dream about. Nothing is better for hookup girls than sleeping for 3 days, friday sat sun (loaded with drugs, alcohol and sex)
Steal some rap songs from less known artists, change a few words, and call them your own. Tell everyone you made it and rap on calls to girls.
Atleast put, one photo where you are shaving your face, this signals that your balls and stick are shaved as well.
2023.06.02 15:25 GroovyTony- I wish there was a setting for both menu music AND battle music. The music during fights are okay, but the cringe rap song during character select is already getting old.
Hopeful CAPCOM will add this setting later. If not, oh well, I’ll use a Spotify playlist.
2023.06.02 15:24 TangentOfPiOver2 STM32F103 CRC32 match with PC-calculated CRC32: Solution and algorithm. CRC32/MPEG-2.
A day before I asked about CRC32 in STM, because that part seems pretty underdocumented (if you ask me), and, with the help of community and half the brain cells lost, I can say I have finally cracked it.
The goal was to, obviously, calculate a checksum on MCU and then calculate the same checksum on PC/Server, and it had to be hardware accelerated on MCU.
STM has a custom implementation of CRC32 accelerator, which is CRC32/MPEG-2, which is conveniently mentioned nowhere at all (Stackoverflow doesn’t count as documentation).
Since I figured I want a hw accelerated checksum, I don’t really care if it’s CRC32 or CRC32/MPEG-2, because if 64MHz MCU can calculate that, the PC or Server will probably handle it as well. I tried to get vanilla CRC32, but it involves some bit shifts and complex loops of some sort, I never made it work. Oh well, I will stick to CRC32/MPEG-2, no big deal. Even less work for MCU.
The solution was inspired by discussion in the comments, and was also found partially by accident. Warning: my algo works on data made of full 32-bit chunks. I don’t handle stray leftover bytes. Obviously, it should be only a minor adjustment to my code.
Algo:
Loop through data: 1) Take i-th 32-Bit chunk of data 2) Reverse its byte order (using assembly REV instruction like me or with C/C++) 3) Write the result of 2) to CRC->DR. End of loop. Return CRC->DR
This gives CRC32/MPEG-2 checksum, verifiable with PC or online calculators.
Discovered that it works with REV completely by accident (well, I thought of endianness of things and figured it was worth a try, educated guess)
MCU code:
uint32_t CRC_Control::CRC32MPEG2(uint32_t *input, uint32_t word32length) {
for (uint32_t index = 0; index < word32length; index++) { CRC->DR = CoreMath::ReverseBytes(input[index]); }
return (CRC->DR); }
The code contains my classes and functions, but it’s clear what I do here. I have a naked function with REV instruction to reverse bytes.
The Python CRC32/MPEG-2 function is taken from stackoverflow as is. Here is how I use it:
string = "hello world!"
bytified_string = bytes(string, 'utf-8')
print(hex(crc32mpeg2(bytified_string)))
Function code: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/69332500/how-can-calculate-mpeg2-crc32-in-python
These yield identical results, and they match the online calculators. I have tested it with a few other sets of data as well.
