There is a certain aura, a cultural meme, regarding the United Nations Armed Forces. A very particular version of events that is peddled across the galaxy, generally the result of an interstellar game of telephone. This aura is that of an unflinching, uncaring war machine. One that starts with the goal of total destruction of its opponents, and works towards that by any means necessary.
It is easy to see how this came about. Even putting aside the pre-Contact War conflicts, there is plenty of brutality to be found. The exploits of Spearhead Platoon during the Second Hekatian War, fighting it's way from the Susquehanna to the palace of the Hekatian Emperor, has particularly dominated the popular consciousness for many, and it is difficult to argue they did not experience some of the worst the war had to offer. A still frame of Corporal Heppell, gas mask concealing all but his eyes, half a second away from plunging his plasma-enhanced bayonet into a Hekatian platoon commander, has become one of the most reproduced images of the whole Battle of New York.
While plasma bayonets were only issued to a small portion of British units during the Second Hekatian War, melee fighting still occupied a disturbingly high proportion of the wars with the Hekatians a modern war. The Battle of London (both 2021 and 2025) saw civilians armed with little more than axes and clubs achieving at least some success against mechanised Hekatian forces in the tight urban confines of the city, with their contributions in the Second Hekatian War forming a part of the critical force that halted the Hekatian offensive. Less well commemorated, but by no means less brave, was the near-complete annihilation of the 8th Battalion Rajputana Rifles in the opening phases of the Battle of New Delhi. Caught out-of-position by the surprise landing of Hekatian forces, the soldiers rushed into battle against a far-superior Hekatian force. By the day's end, only 3 soldiers survived from the entire ordeal, but their counterattacks, waged with everything from rifles to chunks of rubble used as clubs, successfully held up the better part of a division for some critical hours. Doubtless similar stories exist across every front of the war.
Infantry fought with all manner of weapons, with KPA forces famously utilising shovels and large quantities of grenades while fighting from trench to trench on the slopes of Mt. Paektu. During the later stages of the Battle of New York, Gurkha units roamed the irradiated rubble of the city, wielding plasma-enhanced kukris: this was so extraordinarily effective that Hekatian units in the Brooklyn area had a bounty set on the weapons, on the basis that each collected meant another of the feared soldiers had been eliminated, and that soldiers would be more watchful in hopes of collecting said bounty. The actual effect was that the number of losses credited to Gurkha units went up, as their soldiers (now aware of just how effective they were) delved deeper and deeper into psychological warfare. Meanwhile, Hekatian soldiers became so jumpy that they often exposed themselves to Human forces by firing away at nonexistent targets, and were so nervous as to lose all composure when engaged. When the United Nations counterattack successfully trapped a large quantity of supply-starved Hekatians in the radioactive ruins of New York, an intimidation campaign of such ferocity was launched that even a century later headless Hekatians are occasionally located within the New York area.

There are, of course, other ways to be brutal than a bayonet or bullet.
The Second Hekatian War, for example, saw the mass deployment of nerve gas against Hekatian forces landing in Southern England, with this considered to be the single deadliest event in the history of warfare (excluding attacks targeted at civilian populations). True numbers on the death toll are hard to come by, but it is estimated these attacks alone killed roughly 100,000 Hekatians, unprepared for the gas as they were exiting their ships, with an unknown number severely wounded. This is at present the only confirmed deployment of chemical weapons in either war: rumours persist of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea having used significant quantities during the fighting across the Korean Peninsula, and into Northeastern China. To this day, neither the People’s Republic of China, nor the Korean Federal Republic have confirmed these rumours, and all files regarding the status of the DPRK’s chemical arsenal have been sealed away until 2155.
Chemical weapons were not the only weapons of mass destruction brought out in desperate defence of Earth. Biological weapons were deployed, albeit in significantly less flashy ways. Though continuously denied by the United Nations to this day, all evidence indicates that a modified form of Tularemia was deployed against Hekatian forces in the United States. By all accounts, this was extraordinarily effective in shattering Hekatian morale, along with generally degrading their ability to resist United Nations counterattacks. This disease, relatively minor as far as biological weapons go, was generally non-lethal, and thus believed acceptable to be used against the Hekatians without causing further escalation if discovered.
Currently, there is significant reason to believe the Hekatians may have deployed biological weapons of their own, which may later have morphed into the infamous Cincinnati Flu, though this is highly controversial amongst war historians, and is believed to have occurred independently of the use of Tularemia. It is also worth noting that declassified British documents speak openly of a large stockpile of anthrax being distributed across the island at the start of the Second Hekatian War, with the intent being to release it en masse as a form of vengeance should Britain fall. Still uncertain is why, even a century after the war and the collapse of the Hekatian Stellar Imperium, several Hekatian-majority worlds (including, most infamously, Kulabaddos) semi-routinely see severe outbreaks of a disease worryingly similar to H1N1.
The most destructive WMDs in pure terms were the InterStellar Faster-than-light Missiles. Effectively the old idea of the Relativistic Kill Vehicle, except with a hyperdrive strapped to them, they saw very little use across the war, except for a few carefully calculated deployments by United Nations forces. Using stolen missiles, the Muaytrov and Hualkinov anchorages were utterly destroyed, followed by the military staging post of Traxio.
But these are not the weapons of mass destruction thought of when the Second Hekatian War springs to mind.
In the course of the Second Hekatian War, nukes were tossed around in large numbers. City after city across the United States of America fell victim to Hekatian nukes, while American strikes (generally tactical in nature, directed at concentrations of Hekatian forces and key command and control sites) usually invited yet more retaliation. Historians are unable to come to much of a conclusion on the effectiveness of this strategy by the American military, in no small part due to the difficulties of credibly predicting what would have happened without it. It is arguable that these attacks were responsible for the collapse of Hekatian morale and eventual widespread mutinies: this can also be attributed to any of hundreds of factors. It must be noted, though, that the Hekatians began the nuclear game with the destruction of Washington DC, and that ultimately all responsibility lies with them.
After the war, there was much debate on the morality of this action, rather than just the efficacy. It was declared by some that Humanity, now no longer in an existential fight for it's liberty and potentially survival, was in a "post-nuclear" age, where it could step away from these insanely destructive weapons. While this did hold for biological and chemical weapons, it simply could not for nuclear weapons, as the reality of maintaining an effective military on the interstellar scale quickly caught up. Nukes are fielded in what could be described as a liberal amount: fashioned into Nuclear Explosively Formed Projectiles or Casaba-Howitzers, they form the backbone of the Stellar Navy’s anti-ship missile arsenal. Special forces units have routinely made use of sub-kiloton devices in the Rigel Campaign, and conventional forces maintain large stockpiles for tactical usage. Even the famous SIM-94, defender of the skies, is more commonly than not fielded with a nuclear warhead of some sort.
These are carefully calculated tactical uses, yes. A Casaba-Howitzer melting a warship is a far different thing than the nuclear bombardment of Los Angeles, both in scale and morality. But most commanders do still hesitate when they order a nuclear strike in an exercise. Failsafes abound for all devices intended for anti-ship purposes to prevent their usage in other ways, while devices for use as bombs are subject to hyper-strict command-and-control procedures. ISFMs are subject to even stricter control, since their misuse could devastate an unshielded planet.

The cumulative effects of such a war have continued to be felt for decades afterwards. The Second Hekatian War is believed to be the war with the single highest rate of PTSD amongst veterans. Post-war advances in medical technology helped to at least lessen the effects of physical wounds, and the general improvement in living standards that followed the wars has significantly helped many veterans, but some things can't be solved by getting to take a holiday to space on the cheap. This is of course not to mention the refugee populations of the former United States, many of them surviving by flukes while losing their entire family. It is a horror no one seeks to experience again.
Yes, the plasma bayonet is still technically fielded by both the Territorial and Stellar Army (though, notably, not the Orbital Infantry, who solely fight in the cramped confines of space stations). But it has not been used in combat in decades, and is widely agreed to only exist because of tradition, and also as a somewhat risky means of cooking food. To the average soldier, the idea of a bayonet charge is unthinkable, not least because it means a lot has gone wrong.
When the Hekatians were at the gates in 2025, it was necessary to project a certain image. The unflinching warrior, remorseless and unplagued by questions of morality. Even at the time, this had serious problems. Now, in 2150, things are different. That image is back in the box as far as the United Nations is concerned, even as the myth continues to spread. But the thing about boxes is that you can always open them up again. The only hope is it never will be.

Authors Notes

Some points: the Korean Federal Republic is supposed to be the unified state that now comprises the Korean peninsula. The Rigel Campaign thing is something I have been meaning to expand on for a while now, and has been mentioned before, though not by that name. Fingers crossed I can sort out the relevant stories for that some time soon.
Some may notice that there has been a slight retconning of ISFMs here. Originally they were intended to hit their target at FTL speeds: I have spent at least a year bothered by my earlier concepts of FTL. Firstly, the problem of where they got the energy to go FTL: this was covered by a "no one knows", which was eventually meant to be "no one knows but it's being siphoned from other dead universes and for some reason can't be harnessed by other uses", which was a cop-out to be honest. The second issue was that obviously any shield to protect against this would be absurdly powerful, so absurdly powerful as to render any planet basically invulnerable to everything. Thirdly, they had an interesting effect on space battles, in that they forced them to be more conducted in orbits of planets where collateral damage would prevent the usage of ISFMs. I really like this as a concept, especially since I think it's a kinda nice inversion of how anti-ship missiles work in reality (which force ships to get further and further away), but I realised that ISFMs were basically just too good at this. So I have decided to change it slightly, so that it's closer to a "slipspace" style. ISFMs are now just RKVs with the ability to go faster than light, then they drop out slightly before hitting the target. Still very powerful but less nakedly reality breaking. The point about forcing battles to be more in orbit still stands, but now those ships could better defend themselves or evade. Basically the difference between how hypersonic weapons are portrayed against modern carriers, and their current reality: still capable but not perfect. The same change applies broadly to regular hyperdrives, but they're not really that affected.
Anyway, if you enjoy my work, please consider buying me a coffee, it helps a ton, and allows me to keep writing this sort of stuff. Alternatively, you can just read more of it.

2023.03.29 07:54 Aggravating_Paper_65 Another Inbound PS questions

  1. When is it appropriate to use Fcskuflip? Sometimes I’ll ask my PA to flip an item to the right one since the person recieved the item wrong, ex in hand (physically) I had a XL large sweater but virtually it was attached to a XXL so instead of rereceiving (since I have no receive permissions) I asked her to flip but I’m wondering if that’s ok to do.
  2. And is it ok that I used add items to add back a deleted pallet instead of re receiving it? This person used delete items app to delete the whole pallet so I used the add items using the bin number (P-1-P101A101) as source container and then virtually putting the items in an empty cage and used build a pallet app and I scanned it into the original pax sticker. Just wondering if that’s ok to do then having to receive the whole thing. Thank you

Total Percent Dead: 93.14%
Estimated Bots: ~42*
Pool Value Per Person: ~$145.73**
*Estimated Bots is a rough count determined by all "safe" logins within the first 30 seconds of a new day. This number is far from accurate, as there are surely some humans caught up in it, but for now, it is the best number we can get without having a bigger universe. Eventually, we will have a more accurate method to get this number.
**This number does not account for the credit fees, etc, removed from the total pool amount. At the end of the game the total pool will likely be closer to ~$67k after credit card processing fees are deducted by MSCHF. This number also does not account for your potential local and federal taxes which would be owed on the winnings.

2023.03.29 05:16 autotldr Dubai Police arrest 25 beggars during the first 5 days of Ramadan

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 37%. (I'm a bot)
In collaboration with the Dubai Police stations, the General Department of Criminal Investigations has arrested 25 beggars as part of its successful anti-begging campaign, launched under the slogan "Begging is a Wrong Concept of Compassion."
Major General Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, stated that the anti-begging campaign has significantly reduced the number of beggars annually, thanks to the strict and decisive measures taken against those apprehended.
Al Jallaf added that begging threatens the security and safety of society, properties, and the country's image.
He reminded the public that begging is illegal and punishable under Federal Law No. 9 of 2018 concerning combating begging.
Colonel Ali Salem, Director of the Infiltration Control Department in the General Department of Criminal Investigation, urged the public not to respond to beggars' pleas, show pity or sympathy for their appearance, and assist the police by reporting any beggars immediately through the call centre, or the "Police Eye" service available on the Dubai Police smart app.
Colonel Ali Salem also warned the community against falling victim to fraudulent electronic messages from beggars through social media and email.

2023.03.29 04:55 stem_crusty What's the fastest way to beat in a disc?

Disclaimer up front because I know someone is going to say it
I don't play tournaments, I don't plan on playing tournaments, I'm not concerned with the letter of the PDGA law.
I do however like to chuck some plastic with my buddies, and in the interest of improving my game, I'd like to simplify what I bag a bit. I understand this is commonly done by carrying multiple examples of a single mold in various stages of wear, and I've certainly come to lean on a couple discs that have been in my bag for a number of years now.
That being said, is there any way to speed up this process? There are a couple of molds I've become very fond of since seeing some form improvements, but I do not have as many opportunities to play as I would like and beating them in is taking an age.
SO, any tips or tricks to help things along? Throwing them at a wall? Running over them with my car? Belt sander? Surf the used bin? Is it even a physical process, or is time and UV damage the secret sauce?
I do love the natural patina and don't expect that to be replicated, but I'll be damned if they aren't making these things out of way tougher stuff these days.
Give me your thoughts! I promise I won't tell your TD

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc. Always mention working safely.

Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books, you are a qualified applicant.

Explanation of MVO/TTO to save time:
MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.

USPS provides the training. (Maintenance jobs at least. TTO and management...GOOD LUCK)

You don't have to be crazy to work here. We'll train you. Everything but proper email usage.

2023.03.29 04:42 iMogal Supporting Your Right to Repair The Canadian Way

Just announced in the Canadian budget!
https://www.budget.canada.ca/2023/pdf/budget-gdql-egdqv-2023-en.pdf
Starting at page 37:
Supporting Your Right to Repair
When it comes to broken appliances or devices, high repair fees and a lack of
access to specific parts often mean Canadians are pushed to buy new products
rather than repairing the ones they have. This is expensive for people and
creates harmful waste.
Devices and appliances should be easy to repair, spare parts should be readily
accessible, and companies should not be able to prevent repairs with complex
programming or hard-to-obtain bespoke parts. By cutting down on the number
of devices and appliances that are thrown out, we will be able to make life more
affordable for Canadians and protect our environment.
38 Chapter 1
Budget 2023 announces that the government will work to implement
a right to repair, with the aim of introducing a targeted framework for
home appliances and electronics in 2024.
The government will launch consultations this summer, including on the right
to repair and the interoperability of farming equipment, and work closely with
provinces and territories to advance the implementation of a right to repair.
-----
Bella needs to fix her phone and goes to a repair booth at her local mall.
Despite it being a simple fix, copyright rules prevent third-party access to
the repair she needs. This forces Bella to fix her phone directly with the
phone manufacturer, which costs far more than it should. Once the federal
government introduces a right to repair, the simple repair could be done at
the mall for a much lower price.

2023.03.29 04:40 scooterflaneuse 114th Precinct March Community Council Meeting Highlights: an army of pedestrian advocates and a couple of old guys complaining about those pesky kids jaywalking

The president of the community council, Ann Bruno, opened the meeting with what seems to be her usual rituals. She asked us all to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance, said it was nice to see people in person and not in Zoom windows, and said Deputy Inspector Kenneth Gorman (commander of the 114th precinct) was “the best.” Last time she opened the meeting in almost exactly the same way. Next up was the recognition of the “Cops of the Month” (yes, this is really the title of the award) for February: two partners who got the award, not for any one incident, but for a “plethora” of “police work” (Gorman’s words, which I think means nobody did anything exceptionally heroic this month).
Gorman gave his rundown of crime: crime is down 6% overall, according to him, and down in every crime category, except rape (up by 1 rape) and grand larcenies (up by 8). He said the grand larcenies were mostly scams (same as last month).
And….that was it! Almost. Gorman apparently asked if there were questions at this point, but people either didn’t hear or assumed that Gorman was only asking for questions about the grand larcenies, because no one raised their hand. Ann Bruno was about to wrap up the meeting when u/Miser realized what was going on and immediately jumped up with a question. Gorman trudged back to the podium after he’d believed he was home free.
u/Miser asked what Gorman thought the 114th Precinct had done over the past month to be a better “Vision Zero” partner. Gorman appeared unsure of what u/Miser meant. u/Miser sought to clarify that Gorman knew what he meant by “Vision Zero partner”, and Gorman said he absolutely did. u/Miser then rephrased and asked what specific things the precinct had done in the last month to keep pedestrians and others on the street safe. Gorman said that overall traffic injuries were down since last month by ten incidents, but that there was a slight increase in pedestrian injuries specifically. He also talked about enforcement and said that in the last month, the precinct had issued 450 parking summonses, almost 600 moving violations, and done an “operation” on illegal parking on 21st St yielding 50 parking tickets issued to commercial vehicles.
Once u/Miser asked that question, several other people took the ball and ran with it. The conversation was almost entirely dominated with pro-pedestrian safe-streets advocates. Some highlights:
· A woman in a blue shirt asked where she could report it if there was a particular intersection where drivers were constantly running red lights/stop signs, and asked for specific email addresses/portals. An officer provided an email address to report intersections: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
· A man in a burgundy shirt said he feels safe in Astoria except when crossing the street. He has 2 kids and almost gets hit once a week. He said focusing on specific hot spot intersections wasn’t enough and we had to change overall attitudes of drivers, perhaps through more enforcement. Gorman gave his usual spiel about how cops can’t be everywhere.
· u/Miser said that the whole point of deterrence was so that cops didn’t *have* to be everywhere, because drivers would fear consequences if they drove dangerously. Gorman had a pretty good rhetorical jiu-jitsu at this point: he said, correctly, that it wasn’t his job to instill fear. He also pointed to the number of summonses issued as proof of enforcement. u/Miser said he understood that but deterrence was part of the job, and it seemed obvious that drivers in Astoria feel they can drive as fast as they want, run red lights, and park wherever they want, with no consequences.
· A woman in a leather jacket spoke up to say she almost got killed recently while crossing the street with her dog. She asked the NYPD to point out problem intersections so we could all email DOT to ask for improvements. Gorman agreed, said we could start at the intersection of Hoyt and 31st, and said he would provide numbers.
· An elderly man, who later was revealed to be the president of the Italian-American Federation, declared that pedestrian injuries aren’t always the driver’s fault, because the other day a young kid jumped right in front of his car, and the kid’s mom just laughed. He said all this in THE most classic New York Italian-American accent—it was the best thing about his comment.
· A man in a Tommy Hilfiger jacket noted that he could find crime statistics online through the NYPD website, but moving violations seemed to disappear from month to month. He asked if there was a place he could look for previous months’ violations. He also noted that a large percentage of all the moving violations in February were for tinted windows, and asked why that was a priority. Gorman said he would have to “look into” providing this “historical” data. Gorman also claimed that the tinted windows were a pedestrian safety issue as well as an officer safety issue: he said it’s hard for the driver to see out of tinted windows and therefore won’t see pedestrians. Hilfiger also asked further pointed questions about data.
· A man in a gray jacket said he was a stay-at-home dad, echoed the concerns of Burgundy Shirt, and said the Hoyt/31st intersection was especially dangerous. He said he sees cars running the light there once a day, not just once a week. He asked the precinct to instill respect, if not fear, with enforcement, because this is a serious danger to kids. Gorman said he put officers near that intersection and could get a speed camera but only through DOT, and NYPD could ask for that, but so could citizens.
· A woman asked about enforcing the busway on 21st St. Gorman essentially blamed the redesign of 21st St because it took away a lane and added a busway. He claimed this increased traffic and was bad for cars and (somehow) for pedestrians (it’s not, I cross that street every day and the redesign makes it infinitely better).
· Finally, an elderly man asked where he could look up how many pedestrians got summonses for jaywalking. I think he thought this was a stinging rebuttal to everything everyone else had said.
Unlike last month, the tone of almost all the comments was pro-safe streets. Already, the collective advocacy and voice of everyone involved is having an impact on the culture of these meetings.

2023.03.29 04:02 ImaginationSea3679 Arxur Nursery Chapter 9

Here’s some observations of sex ed for you all. Warning for discussions of sexual content.
Also:
Note: I might have a slightly slower upload schedule for a week or two. Don’t worry, I’m just running a bit low on inspiration and motivation. If you want, you could write story/chapter ideas for any of my fanfics in the comments to give me some inspiration.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
————————————
Memory transcription subject: Oros, Arxur defector
Date[standardized human time]: December 7, 2136
Sex ed for the hatchlings was interesting.
For the most part, I tuned out the discussion. I was already perfectly aware of how various different species copulated.
That didn’t stop me from overhearing the more interesting parts of the discussion.
At one point Jurra asked “why are humans so pretty looking?”.
Olivia was confused for a second, before she answered with “Because thousands of years of sexual selection have turned us into interspecies sex icons, apparently.”
At first I thought that was a joke, regarding how quickly Baroz apparently got off on those magazines, but I was surprised to learn that it was, in fact, not a joke. Apparently there were several species of Earth animal, mostly large birds, that considered humans to be extremely attractive, and that they even went so far as to attack their own kin while pursuing a human’s affection.
The idea was very interesting to think about.
Yalga, a young but very large female, asked “Do your milkers have something to do with it?” Milkers being the hatchling word for breasts or mammaries.
Olivia, her entire body vividly red at this point, reluctantly answered with a short and simple “yes.”
I caught Sarep, a very young hatchling with a love for music, glancing at one of the female soldiers in a manner that the soldier found suspicious. He then proceeded to ask the worst question possible.
“Her milkuhs big. How big are your milkuhs?“
If looks could kill, then Olivia’s righteously furious glare would have been equivalent to a full powered planetary glassing beam aimed straight for Sarep’s face.
The female soldiers had similar expressions.
All of the other hatchlings and all male soldiers stared at him in shock, the same kind of look any Arxur would give to someone who just led the entire Federation Navy to their home.
Olivia left the room and returned a few moments later, a toy weapon in one of her hands.
“Children, this is the No-Horny Bat. We use it to bonk the horniness out of people’s minds.” She explained, gesturing to the toy.
She then turned to Sarep. “Questions like that are very rude and offensive. You don’t ask those questions. Period.” She turned back to the rest of the hatchlings. “Any more questions like that will result in a bonk on the head. This is your only warning.”
She then used a light bonk with the bat as her response to any more questions deemed “horny” or otherwise offensive.
At one point, Minuli asked a very interesting question.
“Are Arxur attractive?” She asked with a suspiciously sly tone and an intense stare straight into Olivia’s soul.
“I’m not interested in any Arxur, if that’s what you’re asking.” She replied neither confirming nor denying the question.
Minuli did not seem convinced, but she didn’t press further.
Eventually, an older hatchling named Sapat asked “Why is it so important that we not have those books?”
Olivia’s face actually brightened a bit.
She explained the dangers that porn might have for a developing mind, and the bad ideas that it could put in the heads of younger hatchlings. Additionally, she explained the threat of porn addictions, and the negative effects that they can have on the minds of people. Through this speech, she explained how these effects could change a person’s view on other people, and potentially how it could push people into some rather poor life decisions, potentially including a life of specific crimes.
Through this speech, she also consistently referenced Lefty as an example of a model gentleman, much to his delight as he munched on his fish cakes. She even went over and offered him the responsibility of being the owner of the No-Horny Bat, which he enthusiastically accepted.
From henceforth, he had earned the title “Captain Lefty.”
I overheard some soldiers proudly mutter about the “unbelievable based-ness of this manly lad”.
Eventually, after about an hour and a half, the discussion of sexual education was over, with varying levels of disgust, intrigue, and confusion on the faces of the hatchlings.
During this whole time, Baroz was tied up to a chair and locked in a prison cell with the label “horny jail” taped onto one of the bars.

I, however, felt slightly uneasy.
Ever since I looked at the pages presented by Minuli and Jurra, I simply can’t look at humans the same way.
Captain Olivia was especially uncomfortable to be around.
I have concerns that maybe my lack of meaningful interaction with the opposite sex is starting to addle my mind.

Marco Rubio, a Rising Republican Political Star

In the recent U.S. midterm elections, Florida Republican contender Marco Rubio easily defeated his Democratic opponent, Val Demings, with 57 percent support, becoming the first Florida Republican to win three terms in the Senate. Rubio consistently led Demings by about 10 percent in the polls throughout the campaign, and an hour after the polls closed, Rubio took a landslide lead. The win gives Rubio another big step on the road to the Republican nomination in the race for the 2024 presidential election.
Rubio is undoubtedly a rising political star in the United States in recent years. He said in an interview that he is ready to become the first Hispanic president of the United States. As a Latino, Rubio has the natural ability to win the support of minorities, and Rubio's story of rapid growth from immigrant descendant to political star is enough to attract voters. His personal experience also includes the inspirational story of earning an $800,000 manuscript fee for his book "American Son", paying off $100,000 in student loans, and buying an $80,000 "luxury fishing boat" to improve his life and achieve the American dream. As a descendant of immigrants born in the United States, Rubio's growth story can be said to be a microcosm of the "American dream", which comes with an aura of personal history for his Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians and other voters won a high popularity, making him hot in the current Republican Party.
Youth is undoubtedly another important capital that Rubio is using to win the White House. CNN has said: "Young, with a competitive personal story and deep roots in Florida, a key "swing state," Rubio has the potential to win the presidential election." An active political star, Rubio has attacked his opponents as "yesterday's leaders" when America needs tomorrow. With pessimism surrounding the U.S. economy and the direction of the country at its highest level this year, the American public is looking for a young, bold leader to emerge and lead the country out of its current predicament, and Rubio has now made the economy a key issue in his campaign, with his current image and experience giving him the support of a large number of young American voters.
Although still young, Rubio has accumulated a considerable amount of political capital since he entered politics. As an influential senator, Rubio was one of the more relied upon allies in Congress during the Trump administration. According to the U.S. "New Republic" network reports, the two have close cooperation on Latin American issues, Rubio has become the "de facto Secretary of State" of the U.S. Latin American policy, and Trump even instructed the White House to "let Rubio satisfied" on Latin America policy. In the Senate, Rubio is a multi-tasker, chairing the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee and serving on the Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Commerce, Technology and Transportation Committees. Rubio is also co-chair of the Congressional and Executive Branch China Committees.
In addition, Rubio has been one of the most active proposers among U.S. senators since he formally took office as a Florida senator. Rubio has proposed 654 proposals and co-sponsored 1,802 proposals, with an average of nearly 300 proposals per year. The proposal involves issues such as federal firearms control, protection of women and children in Central America, counter-terrorism intelligence, and affordable housing crisis response. He tries to present a "modern Republican image" to the American people with "inclusive and sunny political propositions", and he also gain a wave of goodwill for himself. In the aftermath of the Florida school shooting, calls for gun control continue to rise. Rubio was opposed to this, but insisted on stating his views at the public meeting and was accepted. The Guardian newspaper called him a "genius politician" for this reason. "This man is very ambitious and will probably run for president again.”
As a senior senator from Florida, Rubio will become one of the most influential Republican lawmakers on foreign policy after his successful re-election. Rubio, who was once hailed as the "savior of the Republican Party" by Time magazine, will be able to "lead the Republican Party to defend the American dream", as he himself said, let's wait and see.

2023.03.29 03:39 InvictusEnigma Do you support an “assault weapon” ban or the pistol brace rule? (Long Post)

SUPPORTING THE 2ND AMENDMENT
There’s a consensus amongst gun control advocates that banning or restricting “assault weapons” or devices that “convert” normal weapons into “assault weapons” (brace) will decrease gun related deaths and mass shootings. Is there any truth to this?
Let’s first start with definitions:
The terms Assault Weapon and Assault Rifle are used interchangeably by the media and certain gun control and political groups. The term “weapon” includes machine guns, rifles, and shotguns, while a “rifle” is specifically a weapon designed, made, and intended to be fired from the shoulder, which fires only a single projectile for each trigger pull (reduced definition). - https://www.atf.gov/firearms/firearms-guides-importation-verification-firearms-gun-control-act-definition-rifle
  1. Encyclopedia Britannica defines an assault rifle as a “military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire.” - https://www.britannica.com/technology/assault-rifle
  2. Assault Rifle is defined by the U.S. Army and NRA as a selective-fire rifle chambered for a cartridge of intermediate power. - https://www.nraila.org/for-the-press/glossary/#:~:text=Assault%20Rifle,Assault%20Weapon
  3. Assault Rifle is defined by gun control advocates (Every Town) as assault weapons that are generally high-powered semiautomatic firearms where each round has up to four times the muzzle velocity of a handgun round. - https://www.everytown.org/what-is-an-assault-weapon/
  4. Assault Weapon Ban Definition (1994): Generally defined as copies or duplicates of firearms used by the military, weapons with an ability to accept detachable magazines, flash suppressor, grenade launcher and silencers, amongst other attachments. The entire definition is linked here - https://giffords.org/lawcente1994-aw-ban-definition/
The first two definitions (1,2) generally define an assault rifle as a rifle with the capacity to fire various rates of fire (single, burst, full auto), while the other two definitions (3,4) encompass any rifle that resembles to be a copy of the assault rifles used in the military, regardless of the ability or lack thereof to fire various rates of fire. Assault rifles as defined by the U.S. Military are already regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA). Assault rifles as defined by gun control advocates are simply weapons that have higher muzzle velocity than a handgun, while the assault weapon ban definition was meant to encompass almost all modern rifles. Although is it factually correct that the muzzle velocity of a round is increased by a longer barrel, other factors pay a role in the overall effectiveness. Also, if a rifle is more dangerous based on the muzzle velocity, why are 16” barrel rifles and longer more easily accessible to law abiding citizens, meanwhile short barrel rifles (SBR) with less muzzle velocity, and therefore less effective, are considered more dangerous and regulated under the NFA. Although SBR’s are generally shorter and easier to conceal than longer rifles, they will never be shorter and easier to conceal than handguns, which are also as easily accessible as rifles.
Well, who cares about muzzle velocity, concealability, and overall effectiveness. Isn’t it clear those assault rifles are dangerous and need to be banned so we can effectively lower and prevent mass shootings and gun related deaths?
What does the data say about this? “In God we Trust, all others must bring data.” – W. Edwards Deming
Homicides:
The FBI reports that there was a yearly average of 14,556 murder victims with weapons from 2015-2019. Out of the yearly average of 14,556 murders with weapons, approximately 70% (10,252) were murders with firearms. Out of those 10,252 murders with firearms, only an average of 3% (315) were with rifles. To provide contrast into how low that is, the average murder with knifes or cutting instruments was 11% (1,544), blunt objects was 3% (446) and personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, pushing) was 5% (669). If you were to rank these from the highest to lowest, murders with rifles would actually rank lower than knives, blunt objects, and personal weapons. - https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8.xls
Suicides:
But how come gun control advocates always have data with significantly higher numbers than what the FBI reports? This is because gun control advocates present data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who actually tracks firearm related deaths and not murder victims. What’s the difference? The difference is that firearm related deaths include suicides, which actually makes up around 54% of the firearm related deaths in the United States in 2020, thus effectively doubling the numbers. The CDC reported that there were 45,222 firearm related deaths in the US and 24,292 were suicides. - https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db433-tables.pdf#5
Comparing suicide and homicide trends with firearms:
Only CDC data on firearm suicides from 2018 – 2021 was available. Since the percentage of firearms suicides from all suicides remained consistent (51-55%) at an average of 52%, we will calculate firearm suicides from 2015 -2019 as an average. In 2015 there were 22,980 firearm suicides and 13,847 homicides with firearms. Using 2015 numbers as our base numbers, 2016 – 2019 data was compared and noticed the following: Firearm suicides consistently increased to the highest in 2018 at 25,138 (8.9% increase) and then decreasing to 24,705 (7.5%) in 2019. Meanwhile, homicides with firearms increased to the highest in 2017 at 11,014 (20.4% increase) and then decreasing to 10,258 (12.1%) in 2019. In 2018 the decrease in homicides with firearms was overshadowed by the increasing number of suicides. The U.S. ranks #25 out of 179 countries that have reported suicides rates. - https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/suicide-rate-by-country
Comparing homicides in the U.S. with other countries:
So, is the US the homicidal country of the world? Well, not according to data compiled by World Population Review out of California. Keep in mind that there’s no consistent definition and reporting of this data around the world, so we make do with what is available. Based on this data, the US ranks #76 out of 196, with El Salvador and Jamaica having the most homicides per 100,000 residents. It reports the US had 16,214 homicides in 2018, which is higher than the number reported by the FBI. The US seems to be the third largest country in the world. Despite this fact, it still had significantly less homicides than smaller countries like Nigeria (64,201), Brazil (57,358), and our next-door neighbor Mexico (36,685). These countries with smaller population and higher homicides have something else in common…. their citizens are generally disarmed due extremely limited or nonexistent legal access to firearms and crime is rampant as they are unable to defend themselves. - https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/murder-rate-by-country
Now, with all this data in mind, could we reasonably presume that current battles being fought in our political system to restrict access to “assault rifles” (modern rifles in common use) and turn braced pistols into SBR’s could curtail gun deaths in our country? We could ban rifles tomorrow and it would only impact 3% of homicides in the US while simultaneously limiting access to millions of law-abiding citizens. We can classify pistols with braces as SBR’s, which might shift homicides from one classification to another but will not prevent any homicides as there are legal venues for people to avoid turning a pistol in their possession into an SBR. Meanwhile, millions of law-abiding citizens are classified as felons by the pistol brace rule and traffickers can continue to purchase these pistols without braces and purchase the braces or stocks separately, completely circumventing NFA requirements and violating federal law, which they already do by trafficking firearms. Let’s say hypothetically that the US stopped all homicides with guns for a whole year….the number is 0. We would still have over 20,000 firearm related deaths (suicides) per year and continued calls to restrict or ban firearms as a result.
Manufacturing of firearms:
And interestingly enough, data shows that the manufacturing of pistols in the U.S. is actually higher than the manufacturing of rifles or shotguns. This was consistent prior to the enactment of the assault weapons ban. Once the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban passed, production of pistols significantly dropped by almost half, while rifle production remained consistent throughout the ban until it’s sunsetting in 2004. Production of both rifles and pistols consistently increased after the ban expiration, peaking in 2016, with pistols consistently being produced at higher numbers than rifles. The total numbers of firearms produced in 1993 were roughly around 3 million, while in 2016 the total was slightly over 10 million. Even when firearm production more than tripled in 2016 compared to 1993 and homicides and suicides increased from 2012 to 2020, they still remain at lower levels than it’s peak in 1968 and more consistent with homicide and suicide rates found in 1980. There doesn’t seem to be a correlation between the manufacturing of firearms and the overall deaths by firearms. I use gun manufacturing instead of gun ownership as gun ownership numbers are obtained via survey and could produce inaccurate results based on false answers, particularly in states where the government is openly against gun ownership. Meanwhile, firearms manufacturing is greatly driven by demand and the numbers exclude production for the U.S. military.
Mass shootings:
Everyone would expect to see a correlation between mass shootings and increase in homicides in the U.S., but this is not the case. While mass shootings were a rare occurrence, averaging 1 mass shooting per year in the 1980’s, 2.3 in the 1990’s, 2 in the 2000, and an average of 6.6 in 2010’s. The highest single year of mass shootings was 2018 with 12 mass shootings. It would seem that homicides not involving a mass shooting were decreasing, while mass shooting events are increasing, and overall homicides were on a decline from 2016-2019.
Suggestions:
1). To adopt and standardize definitions for assault rifles and mass shooting events that is accurate and report on and analyze suicides, homicides, and mass shooting trends separately.
2) Implement gun safety education nationally to decrease the possibility of children handling and accidently discharging a firearm.
3) Divert resources to focus on prosecuting criminals and investigating crimes rather than targeting all firearms, which will have a minimal impact on preventing homicides, trigger constitutional scrutiny and diverts prosecutorial resources to fight 2nd amendment rights.

2023.03.29 03:30 CatherineTLP Unable to see clearly in dream

A little info on me which might help: I (f17) am a very anxious, stressed, and paranoid person, so much so that it has affected me physically. I also am a bit scared of and uncomfortable with the dark do to a genetic eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa (you can google it if you want, but basically I am completely blind in the slightest bit of dark and am slowly loosing all of my peripheral vison until I go completely blind. The type mutation i have is fast acting and as of now, has no cure or treatment)
I have been having different dreams the past month or so all including some sort of hazy or blurry vision. The harder I try to focus, the more blurred it gets.
Last night, I had a dream where I was driving out of my old childhood neighborhood (VERY bad memories attached) and as I was driving, the car started driving faster even though I wasn't pressing the petal down. when I tried to break, it wouldn't work. At this point in the dream, the number 2 or 20 was important, though I don't remember why. I called my mom for help and kept focusing on steering to keep the car on the road (I don't really remember the call, just that I was asking for help). the scenery gradually changed to a one lane road deep in the woods with an autumn like feeling. The tree line became denser as I drove, and the leaves became orange and yellow (everything felt very orange and yellow). Then the sky started to darken and I was still on the phone with someone (im unsure if it was still my mom or someone else), and was panicking that it will be night soon and I can't drive at night due to me eyes. At this point everything had an orange hue, and then it all went completely dark, the only thing visible was the separation of a very dark navy blue as the sky, and the pitch black of the top of the trees above. Everything below was completely black. I was already starting to panic due to being very afraid of being in the middle of the wilderness at night and became even more so when my vision started to become very blurry and hazy. I curled up into a ball (and maybe was crying? I don't really remember) and was desperately waiting for whoever was on the phone with me previously to come find me and save me from being in the woods alone in the darkness. I know my eyes were open, but it felt like they were closed, I couldn't see anything at all and no matter how hard I tried to see, I just couldn't. I had a very hopless, sinking feeling, almost like I was sinking into a pit of tar. In the dream, it seemed like I was starting to drift to sleep and then I woke up.
Anyone have any idea as to what any of this would represent?

Speaker of Parliament meets Bundestag President in Germany, calls for sanctions against Azerbaijan

Speaker Simonyan said that Armenia attaches great importance to the implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and appreciates Germany’s support in this matter.
Speaking about the post-war situation and the need for urgent solutions to regional security issues, Speaker Simonyan said that the no less destructive developments happening in South Caucasus – around Armenia and the Armenian-populated Nagorno Karabakh – are overlooked by many.
At the request of Bas, Simonyan presented details on the crisis in Lachin Corridor, the danger facing the blockaded 120,000 Armenians of Artsakh and the multi-layered humanitarian problems.
Simonyan warned that Azerbaijan is seeking to forcefully displace the Armenian population before the eyes of the whole world by continuing its policy of ethnic cleansing and creating unbearable living conditions.
The Speaker of Parliament reminded that the United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – issued a binding ruling on February 22, ordering Azerbaijan to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.
“We expect our German colleagues to take practical steps to ensure the immediate implementation of the court’s decision by Azerbaijan through the application of sanctions against Azerbaijan,” Simonyan said.

Azerbaijani troops breached line of contact and advance into Nagorno Karabakh

In violation of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement, the Azerbaijani forces breached the line of contact in the Shushi-Lisagor section on March 25 and secured some “positional advance”, the official Information Center of Nagorno Karabakh reported.
The Nagorno Karabakh authorities immediately notified the Russian peacekeepers on this yet another violation by Azerbaijan.
“The authorities expect the peacekeeping contingent to take practical steps for eliminating the consequences of this violation and preventing new violations,” the Information Center said in a statement.
“Azerbaijan’s false claim on the alleged use of the Stepanakert-Ghaybalishen-Lisagor mountain road for arms shipments is simply a pretext for their own renewed aggressive and destructive actions. They ambushed and killed three on-duty police officers and injured another on March 5 under this same pretext. The government of Artsakh has numerously said that in conditions of the ongoing blockade since December 12, the given mountain road is used for civilian, urgent connection between Stepanakert and four communities in Shushi region, which is carried out with [high-clearance] large vehicles, given the highly complex and hazardous terrain.
And the existence and normal functioning of the Defense Army doesn’t pose any danger for anyone, because it is envisaged exclusively for self-defense, taking into account the real and direct dangers and threats against the physical existence and safety of the people of Artsakh,” it added.

Azerbaijan’s attempt to advance further into Artsakh territory foiled

On March 27, at around 9:00 am, units of the Azerbaijani armed forces tried to advance towards one of the heights adjacent to the Stepanakert-Lisagor road, Artsakh’s Defense Ministry informs.
The attempted advancement of the was prevented thanks to the actions of the soldiers of the Artsakh army on combat duty,
The incident was reported to the command of the peacekeeping troops of the Russian Federation.

Nagorno Karabakh reacts to Azerbaijani meeting offer

Below is the full statement issued by the foreign ministry of Nagorno Karabakh.
In connection with another proposal made by the Azerbaijani President's Office to hold a meeting between representatives of Azerbaijan and Artsakh in Baku in early April, we consider it necessary to reiterate the principled position of the authorities of the Republic of Artsakh regarding possible discussions with Azerbaijan, their modalities and objectives. The Republic of Artsakh has always advocated and continues to advocate for dialogue and a peaceful, negotiated solution to all existing problems. We have never refused contacts with the Azerbaijani side, which is evidenced by the meetings held between the representatives of Artsakh and Azerbaijan with the mediation of the command of the Russian peacekeeping forces deployed in Artsakh. The conditions proposed by the Azerbaijani side regarding the place and agenda of the meeting, as well as the context in which the proposal was made, indicate that the goal of the Azerbaijani authorities is not to have genuine discussion on existing problems, but to disrupt a possible dialogue or to impose their own political agenda through coercion, blockade, creating unbearable living conditions and the use of military force. In this regard, we consider it necessary to recall that three days ago, on 26 March, the Azerbaijani armed forces, in flagrant violation of the trilateral ceasefire statement of 9 November 2020, crossed the line of contact and moved further into the territory of the Republic of Artsakh, in the direction of the unpaved road Stepanakert-Lisagor. Moreover, on 27 March, the Azerbaijani armed forces made another attempt to take control of the mentioned road, which is the only possibility of emergency communication between the communities of Shushi region and other settlements of the republic under the conditions of blockade. We reaffirm our readiness, in line with the established practice of previous meetings, to meet with the representatives of Azerbaijan with the mediation and at the deployment site of the command of the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent in Artsakh to discuss issues of ensuring the normal life activity of the people of Artsakh and the proper implementation by the parties of their obligations, in particular, those related to the unimpeded functioning of the Lachin Corridor. In this context, we consider the reopening of the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia through the Lachin Corridor and addressing the humanitarian, infrastructural and other urgent issues caused by the blockade to be a priority The authorities of Artsakh are also open to discussing other issues, which would not be aimed at imposing ready-made solutions on the part of Azerbaijan, but the search of mutually acceptable solutions to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation of tension. We emphasize once again that the continued blocking of the Lachin Corridor and aggravation of the humanitarian crisis in Artsakh are unacceptable and in no way contribute to creating an environment conducive to dialogue. We are convinced that only proper implementation by Azerbaijan of its international obligations, both under the Trilateral Statement of 9 November 2020 and the order of the International Court of Justice of 22 February 2023, may testify to Azerbaijan's willingness and interest to address issues through dialogue and negotiations without resorting to coercion and the use of force. We reiterate the inadmissibility of politicisation of dialogue on technical and humanitarian issues and emphasise that the political issues of the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict settlement must be discussed in an agreed and internationally established negotiation format, based on the equal rights of the parties and the existence of solid international guarantees for the implementation by the parties of their obligations.”

Charles Michel conducts separate telephone calls with Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders

On 25 March, European Council President Charles Michel had separate bilateral telephone conversations with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan.
Following his last meetings with both leaders in Munich on 16-17 February 2023, President Michel raised with them various topics discussed in the Brussels process between their first trilateral meeting on 14 December 2021 and their fourth meeting on 31 August 2022.
Michel reaffirmed the EU’s strong commitment to helping the sides reach a long-awaited normalisation and sustainable peace and expressed concerns about the continuous crisis around the Lachin corridor, the recent casualties and sharp increase in tensions on the ground as well as accompanying negative rhetoric.
The EU top official urged his counterparts to look for compromise solutions and to refrain from any actions that could lead to risks of escalation.
In both calls, the leaders agreed to stay in close contact.

Armenia’s Constitutional Court greenlights ratification of Rome Statute

The High Court ruled today that the Stature corresponds to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.
The decision paves the way for Armenia to join the International Criminal Court.
Although Armenia signed the Rome Statute in 1999, in 2004, the Armenian Constitutional Court ruled that the Statute was partially incompatible with the Armenian constitution and could not be ratified.
The ICC is the world’s first permanent international court to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Central to the Court’s mandate is the principle of complementarity, which holds that the Court will only intervene if national legal systems are unwilling or unable to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The Armenian Government greenlighted the ratification of the Statue at a sitting of December 29, 2022.

Opposition nominates candidate for Ombudsman

The two opposition caucuses in the Armenian parliament have nominated their candidate for Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman), a position that has been vacant since the resignation of Kristinne Grigoryan in January.
The opposition’s candidate is Edgar Ghazaryan, a former Armenian Ambassador to Poland and former Chief of Staff of the Constitutional Court, the chair of the human rights and public affairs committee Taguhi Tovmasyan said in a statement.
Ghazaryan is a vocal critic of the incumbent government.
The ruling Civil Contract faction earlier announced that its candidate for the position is Anahit Manasyan, the Deputy Prosecutor General of Armenia. Manasyan hasn’t been officially nominated yet.
Candidates must pass a confirmation vote in parliament to be installed as Ombudsman.

United States expresses concern over Azerbaijani ‘military movements’

“Assistant Secretary Karen Donfried spoke with Foreign Minister Bayramov this morning and expressed concern over Azerbaijani military movements,” State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said when asked to give updates from the situation on the ground regarding Armenia-Azerbaijan.
“She emphasized the U.S.’s commitment to Armenia-Azerbaijan peace negotiations. As the Secretary has also spoken about this quite repeatedly, direct dialogue is key to resolving this issue and reaching a lasting peace. There is not a military solution to this conflict. We’ll continue to facilitate discussions between Armenia and Azerbaijan bilaterally as well as with partners, and as well as throughout multilateral organizations as well,” Patel added.

“I share the concerns of Armenian Canadians and Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh. We continue to call on the Azerbaijani authorities to reopen the Lachin Corridor. We need to prevent the worsening of the humanitarian crisis. Canada supports the 2020 ceasefire agreement, including the return of Armenian prisoners of war. It is important that the ceasefire – which is supported by the EU monitoring group – be respected,” Mélanie Joly said in response to MP Jean Yip, who noted that it’s already been over 100 days that the Lachin Corridor is blocked and that many Armenians in Canada are worried over the tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan and that the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh could soon escalate. Armenian patriarchate calls on Israeli authorities to take serious measures following attack on St. Mary's Church

Below is the full communiqué released by the chancellery.
“The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem strongly condemns the attack on the St. Mary’s Church of Gethsemane, which according to the Status Quo of the Holy Places is under the joint control of the Armenian and Greek Orthodox Churches.
Though it was the first attack on St. Mary since the beginning of this year, the Christian Holy Shrines have been in constant state of both physical and emotional duress by rogue attackers. Had these previous attacks on the Christian Holy Places been swiftly condemned by the local authorities leading to the perpetrators’ punishment to the full extent of the law, there would not be an influx of new attacks on the churches and monasteries of these Christian communities.
Religious intolerance and hate crimes in all their forms and perpetrations will never allow the conditions of peaceful co-existence to manifest. In fact, their presence – especially when gone unchecked by prevailing authorities – will encourage other hateful crimes and intolerances to take place. These actions and their lack of condemnation lead to unsafe conditions for these communities and establishes a lack of trust between worshipers, tourists, and residents with the local authorities.
Therefore, we call upon the Israeli Government and the Police to take serious measures to prevent such attacks and to protect both the Christian Holy sites and their daily worshipers from further vandalism and suchlike attacks.”

As a result of the Lernakert excavations, burials attributed to the phase of transition from the middle bronze to the late bronze were discovered.

Burials attributed to the phase of transition from the Middle Bronze to the Late Bronze Age (2nd half of the 16th century - 1st half of the 15th century BC) were opened, in which both the Middle Bronze Age Red Berd and the Late Bronze Age objects were found. These tombs of the transitional phase (Middle Bronze to Late Bronze) have a retaining wall-cromlech with a diameter of 5-15 meters. The cells are underground, oriented north-south. In the burials attributed to different phases of the Late Bronze Age, the remains were placed in the ways of burial and reburial. Accompanying possessions in these tombs are shells, rarely beads. The tombs belonging to the early Iron Age have retaining wall-cromlechs (8-20 m square), low mounds made of small stones and east-west facing slab cells. Group burials were documented in the Lower Iron Age tombs. It was discovered
On the eastern slope of the hill of the Iron Age fortress Vari Berd, a "wheel-shaped" structure consisting of other adjacent circular structures was confirmed by aerial photography. "Wheel" structures are famous in Armenia in the foothills of Aragats, where they are found in the context of monuments called "desert kites". Remains of the "Spinal" structure were also documented in the highest ancient site of Aragats Mountain, Karmir Sar, where excavations revealed a collection of dragon stone carvings in their original environment. The example of Lernakert is special in that it is documented for the first time in the context of the castle. However, the latter's function is not yet clear.
The Lernakert excavations are important in terms of the study of the Early Bronze Age society. In particular, the research of the ancient DNA of Lernakert has received a wide response, which shows that the skeletons discovered in burials made at the same time, but in different tomb groups, had no family ties. It proves that different superstitions lived in the communities.
The study of the dynamics of changes in the early Bronze Age landscape of Lernakert makes it possible to follow the formation and construction processes of the defense system with the data of two fortresses in one complex. Due to the combination of data from Lernakert burial site with data from Artik, Harichi, Horom, Mastara, Talin and Lchashen, the processes of formation of complex societies in the Late Bronze Age can be outlined. Groups of privileged people, soldiers, religious servants and merchants are noted in castles and burial grounds.
Articles on the results of the excavations were published in Armenian and foreign periodicals, reported both at local and foreign scientific conferences.
The Lernakert archaeological expedition was co-financed by the Shirak Armenological Research Center of the NAS of RA, the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the NAS of RA, the State Committee of Science and the National Association for Armenological Research and Studies (NAASR) within the framework of the theme "Trends of the Bronze Age landscape transformation of the northwestern slopes of Aragats Mountain".

Dr Sophie Scamps raises Artsakh blockade in Australian Federal Parliament

Dr Scamps said, “A couple of weeks ago, I was treated to a surprise visit in my electorate office by students of the AGBU Alexander Primary School in Duffys Forest in my electorate of Mackellar. AGBU is an independent, co-educational, bilingual English and Armenian Christian school. While I’m absolutely delighted to have received a visit from these year 5 and 6 students, they came with a very serious message. The students presented me with a letter they had written, asking me to address the Australian parliament on a very important matter: the ongoing blockade of the Lachin corridor in Artsakh since 12 December 2022, as part of the ongoing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”
“The Lachin corridor is a road that connects the Republic of Artsakh to the Republic of Armenia. The letter went on to explain how the supply of food and medicine is running dangerously low as a result of the blockade, and gas supply between Armenia and Artsakh has been cut off.”
“There is a vibrant Armenian community in my electorate of Mackellar, and I’ve had many representations from those people in addition to the schoolchildren. On their behalf, I have made representations to Foreign Minister Wong’s office about this ongoing crisis and met with foreign department specialists to discuss the matter. The crisis affecting the people of Artsakh must not be forgotten or overlooked while the world is distracted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”
ANC-AU Executive Director Michael Kolokossian welcomed the advocacy efforts undertaken by the Year 5 and Year 6 students of AGBU Alexander Primary School.
“During this difficult time, every Armenian-Australian must be advocating for an end to this illegal blockade. It is heartening to see the youngest members of our community play a key role in standing up for their homeland.”
“We thank Dr Scamps for engaging with the Armenian-Australian community and bringing this issue to the floor of parliament. Her principled stance is greatly appreciated as we work to end this blockade,” added Kolokossian.

Sarsang water levels dropping at alarming rate amid blockade, Artsakh authorities say

Since January 9 Azerbaijan has been barring Nagorno Karabakh authorities from accessing and repairing the damaged power transmission line which supplies Nagorno Karabakh with electricity from Armenia.
“The only source of electricity we have now is the Sarsang Reservoir,” Ararat Khachatryan, the acting chairman of the Water Committee of Artsakh said.
“The water levels are over eight meters lower compared to the same period last year. Today the inflow is 4 cumecs, which is a very low indicator. The Tartar flow can reach up to thirty, forty or fifty cumecs. The consumption is a lot higher now. When water levels are high, less water is actually consumed for obtaining electricity, but when the water levels drop, pressure also drops and it takes more water to get the same amount of electricity,” Khachatryan explained.
“Since January 9, Azerbaijan has been impeding and barring us from carrying out repair works in the territory under its control where the high-voltage electricity transmission line supplying Artsakh from Armenia passes. Before the blockade, especially in winters, when the electricity supplied from Armenia was insufficient, we were using the Sarsang Reservoir. After the war we are left with only five small HPPs in Artsakh, which work only under 20% capacity,” Khachatryan said, warning that if the power line doesn’t get fixed soon there will be insufficient water levels in Sarsang.
Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan earlier warned that the significant decrease of water resources in Sarsang Reservoir (which had a capacity of 600,000,000 cubic meters) will lead to a serious crisis in spring and summer first of all for the Azerbaijani farmers themselves because the water resources won’t be sufficient enough for irrigating the 96,000 hectares in Azerbaijan’s Tartar, Aghdam, Bardi, Goranboy, Yevlakh and Akhjabad regions. The Artsakh authorities said that the residents of these regions should be aware that they won’t have irrigation water and will subsequently lose income and harvest thanks to their own authorities and the self-proclaimed “eco-activists”.

Japanese sakura flowers will blossom in Yerevan (for some reason)

The Japanese Embassy in Armenia on Tuesday approved the funding program for the renovation of a building where the “Khikari” Armenian-Japanese Cultural Center will function. The $120,000 grant program is called “Khikari Center Improvement Project.”

2023.03.29 03:15 Wild_Extra_Dip 6 Ramadan 1444AH

Ibn Umar may Allaah be pleased with him reported that Allaah's messenger peace and blessings be upon him, at iftaar, would say: "ذهب الظمأ، و ابتلت العروق، و ثبت الأجر إن شاء الله" "Thirst has gone, vessels are wetted, and the reward has been assured, by Allaah's will" (Thahab ath-thamaa' wa ibtallat al urooq wa thabot al ajr in shaa Allaah" [Abu Dawud with an authentic chain of transmission]

Duaa of Today: "Subhaan Allaah wa bihamdih, adada khalqih, wa rida nafsih, wa zinat aarshih, wa midaad kalimaatih"
Allaah's messenger peace and blessings be upon him left the mother of the believers Juwairiyya may Allaah be pleased with her and returned a while later, during which she had been in the place where she prayed, and she was making a duaa to Allaah, which Allaah's messenger peace and blessings be upon him told her: "Since leaving you I have said three times four phrases which, if weighed against all that you have said (during this period), would prove to be heavier: Glory be to Allah, and I begin with praise of Him to the number of His creatures, in accordance with His good pleasure, to the weight of His throne and to the ink (extent) of His words" [Abu Dawud] and it is most preferable to say it thrice, as proven that Allaah's messenger peace and blessings be upon him would make duaa thrice, and istighfar thrice, and repeating it throughout the day would be much too pleasant for the believer in the end.

Moral of Today: Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him saying: 'The human does not fill any container that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath." [Tirmithi]

2023.03.29 02:30 VehicleRepairInfo The Average US Car is 12.1 Years old and has 135k miles

Assumptions from the data:
The current average age of a car on the road is 12.1 years. This is provided to us via the BTS report "Average Age of Automobiles and Trucks in Operation in the United States" which can be found here.
So how do we extrapolate that to mileage? The roughest number would be to just see the current average miles traveled, then assume the past 12.1 years are roughly the same then we would get:
(avg. miles/year) * (avg. lifespan in years) = (avg. total miles)
To get that number we can use the FHWA's reports. First we need to know the total traveled vehicle miles, which we can get from the report "Annual Vehicle-Miles of Travel" the table is in millions, so for 2021 that gives:
3,140,088 * 1,000,000 = 3,140,088,000,000 vehicle-miles
Roughly 3.14 trillion vehicle-miles.
Then to get an average car's mileage we need to know how many vehicles were on the road, which we can get from the report "State Motor-Vehicle Registrations." Nationally, we had 282,366,285 registered vehicles on the road.
So, using these rough estimates we can see that the average car in 2021 accounts for:
3140088000000/282366285 = 11120.62
Roughly 11121 miles
So using our original formula we can say very roughly the average car has:
11121 * 12.1 = 134,564.1
Roughly 135k miles.
This method has at least two suspected major flaws:

I would like to extrapolate this to how long a car lasts, but since the average age of a car on the road doesn't give any information at which age the cars are dying we can only say that the average car lasts more than 135k miles.

2023.03.29 02:01 DraftPuzzleheaded677 9 months later, don’t think I’ll ever recover from my ex who has destroyed me emotionally and financially. Advice sought.

Would like some advice on steps to take to heal. I have posted here before but would like more advice as I have no idea how to heal from all of this trauma. I feel so alone. Besides my son I have no family or support system.
So my 8 year relationship/marriage has been destroyed and sent to hell with my soon to be ex wife. I filed for divorce. I didn’t post 1/4th of all of the horrible things she has put me through throughout the entire relationship, but I’ll list more here:
-Got me arrested for domestic violence 7 years ago (lie) which got dropped, but antiquated state board laws had me kicked out of my graduate program and not allowed to continue due to the arrest alone (current student loan which I shouldn’t Islamically had to begin with is currently sitting at $250,000 all federal).
Took my son away from me several times due to her narcissistic mother’s influence. Since there was no court orders, she could hide him for months and I could do nothing but beg as she began cheating on me whilst I stupidly tried saving my relationship/marriage.
Years ago she gave me 2 STD’s. Blamed me for cheating and getting them myself after telling me I should get checked.
She sent my then newborn’s photos (2 months old) to 4 different guys, asking them (one of which just got out of prison) if he’s cute. Then she sent nudes of herself. Then told her ex boyfriend she doesn’t wanna destroy his relationship to which he responds : “you gave that goofy a baby, if you really love me give me one and prove it to me.”
Last year she dumped me after 8 years together with an argument she perpetuated. I spent the next 5 months blaming myself and finding reasons to feel bad about what I did wrong. Come to find out she had been cheating already at least 2-4 weeks prior to the “argument”. I found tangible evidence.
What happens next? Complete and utter ghosting. Not letting me see my son. Then says we can be friends. She cheated with 4-5 people AGAIN. She flew to Chicago, and NO we aren’t anywhere near Chicago with my money as she left our son here, went with her sister, yeah, my sister in law, and cheated on me with a random from Facebook for four days. She then tells me she wants a divorce and that I’ve hit her.
I went there to her mom’s house once and her narcissistic mother was yelling at me threatening to call the police and saying her daughter was divorcing me and almost put up her hand to hit me.
Then she used my money for a concert, acting like the trip and concert was for her and our son and I was feeling bad for them thinking they were hungry or bills there needed to be paid. It was all a lie.
I filed for divorce. Since she then went with a third guy and then ended it with him and went with a fourth. The guy found out about her and told me he didn’t even know about me and supposedly dumped her. I don’t know how true that is.
I have primary custody but I am still traumatized. She was on Facebook and Instagram acting like an IG model and showing her body and acting crazy for attention at the age of 31 years old. Since last July to now, zero conversations about us, our marriage, our relationship, NOTHING. Zero. Zilch.
And all her family were on Facebook congratulating her for finding her “peace” and “freedom.”
She blamed me for everything and made up so many lies about me. She claimed she didn’t like our house although she alone chose it. That she didn’t wanna be a housewife although I supported her throughout 3 career ventures of hers.
Suddenly I get my son a phone and she texts him all day asking what he is doing and where he is at.
She heard I didn’t have food one day and offered to send and told me not to be shy. I never responded. She is still on social media getting attention and buying fake likes like her mother and sister. Her sister ruined her 11 year relationship with her son’s father by cheating recently and now the three psychopaths are living under the same roof. Whilst my psychopath ex keeps going with these strange guys and having them call themselves a step dad.
Idk why recently she has been 1% nice by offering food to me and suddenly texts my son a lot more.
Tbh all these months I stupidly tried getting her back because there’s something obviously wrong with me. Today I woke up absolutely sick. Sick that I blamed myself. Sick that my wife went in the bed with so many people and showed zero remorse and posted all this crazy stuff last year on social media about tarot cards, energy, stones, twin flames, and all this magical thinking stuff. Back when I met her she was Catholic and eventually said she believed in Islam. Now she is back to being Catholic again I suppose.
She calls my son every night and asks him if he is going to the Mosque for Ramadan and to have fun and acts like none of this ever happened. And since last year to now she uses a fake TextNow number to talk to me and my son with. A week ago she told me “you have to understand not everybody is like you”.
I’m deleting my social media and all haram people out of my life. I want to disappear and just live for myself and my son and lose contact with a whole bunch of evil spirited people. She did ALL of this after my dad’s funeral last year. I’ve never been more humiliated in my life and have developed suicidal ideation from this. If any of you have more advice for me please let me know. I am not in a great frame of mind. I don’t trust her sudden good behavior and how easily she acted like I never existed after 8 years together. The good wife I once had? It’s like she never existed.
