2023.03.29 07:49 Amazing_Analysis7310 Responding to a waitlisted email

First generation graduate (with Master's) on first PhD cycle. Have had 7 rejections so far. Today brought the first positive news of this cycle. I've been waitlisted on the eighth and final school. Hold little hope about making it off the waitlist, but I don't want to screw any chances I may have with this school by ignorance. What is the process of being waitlisted? Is there something one is supposed to do during this period? How do I respond to their email? I know these questions may sound like I'm not fit for Grad school, but I am not as dense as I sound. Just very anxious and worried about what my future holds if I don't get into Grad school this fall. And nervous about making any mistakes. Thanks for hearing me.

2023.03.29 07:44 GrandDuck I’ve deprived myself of love so much that I’ve become obsessed with the little I can grab

I can’t help overthinking (help me)
Hello everybody. I decided to come on here to share something I am struggling heavily with right now. So I’m going to begin with a backstory. Around a year and a half ago I feel for a girl who was older than me (senior in hs, I was a junior) after seeing her at a couple of parties. We saw each other like 3-4 times at parties and would always kiss and stuff like that. We would text constantly, and i wanted to go on a date with her, but she was reluctant. Eventually I convinced her and the date went great. But after that her text started getting colder, and on her last day of school (seniors end early) there was this party to celebrate, and I went, she was there. We talked for a bit like a nice couple and it was great. But then she left for the bathroom for long, and when I went to the bathroom (I, myself had to pee). I saw her there, and we basically ended up fighting heavily, but it kind of resolved the next day. Then at the graduation party we fought for some reason and I don’t remember probably because of alcohol. All I remember is seeing her making out with another guy. The next day I left some flowers and a note at her house. But that was the end of that relationship. I felt HORRIBLE for almost a month and a half after that (most of that period was so bad that I don’t remember anything). I couldn’t understand how it hurt so much if I only saw her a couple of times, and it felt like I was breaking up with a fiancé or something. I think this points at obsession, I might well be an obsessive person.
Anyways for the next year and a half to two years I never really felt anything for other people. I made out with a couple girls and even had a one night stand once. But never had feelings. It’s like I was completely closed off.
Fast forward to now, I study in the States but live abroad, and I came home for spring break. On Friday I went to a party with a group of friends and then we went to a night club. I started vibing with this girl who is currently a senior (she was my friend prior to this), and eventually after dancing and talking for a long while we kissed. Here is where I don’t remember much because I was so drunk. But I know I spent the rest of the time with her, because her driver brought me and a friend back to my friends house. I just remember her telling me that I should text her because I kept saying I wanted to see her again. And I texted her on Monday that which she said she was available tomorrow. Side note, we snapped the entire time up to today. And I texted her last night about what time I should pick her up, no response (still snapping tho). And some hours ago she opened my last snap and left me on opened.
This is where I am now, for the past couple hours I’ve been stressed about her not snapping me back (at first I thought nothing of it but now her snap score keeps rising). I don’t know what to do, should I text her about the date? Should I not worry and just try to confirm tomorrow? Wait it out?
It’s just I haven’t felt for anyone like his in r really long time. I know it kind of sounds obsessive but I guess it’s just who I am. I feel horrible and all I can think about is her.
Please help. Thank you

The Daily Spin. ZK-Wednesday Edition. Zero. Knowledge. Proofs. Yesterday, three – I repeat, 3 – ZK Protocols raced to become the first to launch a ZK-based mainnet. Matter Labs won, successfully launching ZKSync’s “Era” mainnet for public use, followed by Polygon’s ZK-EVM rollup which also went live on mainnet; and Starkware, launched Ethereum-tested ZK-proofs on the Bitcoin blockchain. How coincidentally does such a big step forward for the entire industry happen all in one day? One thing’s for sure: this new narrative is taking center stage, right now.
Binance’s CZ responds to CFTC charges, and while it still remains as a civil lawsuit there are elements of a potential criminal lawsuit ahead. The same play was made on Arthur Hayes, who ended up serving jail time in house arrest – coincidentally, right before the bull run of 2021. Does history repeat itself?? Let’s find out! Major bad news hitting the press, and BNB takes a measly 5% hit. BTC held firm at $26,800. DEXs vs CEXs volume ratio has reached its ATH. And more Bitcoin has been leaving exchanges than since December ‘22. If it smells like a bull…
In other headlines, US Renewable Energy production surpasses Coal production, marking a significant milestone in ESG. The ECB president warns that central banks could “losing control” without CBDCs. Metamask warns of a fake token launch campaign, Kokomo pulls the rug for $4m, and Safemoon gets compromised. Telegram launches u/wallet bot to enable USDT transfers for users. XRP is up in the double-digits in anticipation of a favorable SEC court ruling. OKex becomes the latest exchange to apply for a Hong Kong VASP license. Sui raises $300m at $2B valuation. Circle’s USDC launches on Cosmos. And in today’s TL section, we have Gains Network, a podcast on Gnosis, stealth addresses, and Lighthouse from Metaverse Fashion Week (MVFW)… here is our round-up of curated news and opinions (surely biased) from the world of Blockchain, keeping you informed into the market news with the most trending, in-the-know, and controversial topics. Need helpful criticism/opinions!!
I haven’t written in forever. Tonight i was having a particular bad night panic attack wise and decided to bust out my writing prompt book.. here is what i came up with.. any feedback (please be gentle but honest) is so very welcomed. Thank you❤️
“When he tried to express himself with words, he could never get it right. But with his hands, he could shape things, mold things, make things. He had discovered that gift as a young boy when he” was placed in, or should I say thrown into art therapy. After being diagnosed with Autism his father saw it as a terminal diagnosis, while his aunt, and the only living tie left to his mother saw it as a fresh and new unconquered challenge. See, his Aunt Marci was unable to save her sister, Cray’s mother, from dying of lung cancer. The real kicker of the diagnosis was that his mother never smoked a day in her life. The only comical thing to come out of his mother’s diagnosis was that his aunt, who never worked out a day in her life, just as his mother had never smoked, decided it was time for them to start exercising regularly. The day after her diagnosis his aunt arrived at their house at 6 am dressed head to toe in what could only be described as an 80’s exercise video get up and had two slime green protein shakes in hand. Cray was only 5 years old when his mother died, but certain images still stuck with him, and who could forget seeing their round aunt clad in neon pink with leg warmers in the middle of January? He saw his aunt every day for the remaining 6 months he had with his mother. He will never be able to forget the change of neon pink to jet black his aunt had to make when her mission to save his mother ultimately failed.
When Clay was 8 his father finally caved and brought him in to a specialist to receive the proper diagnosis of Autism. His father heard whispers about his son’s outbursts in public for years and had distinct memories of the principal telling him that there is something that needs to be figured out with his son. But Marcus refused to believe that his life would be plagued by more trauma than he had asked for. Eventually Marci wore him down with her eyes so much like his late wife’s and convinced him to bring Cray to her friend and behavioral specialist, Shawna.
It didn't take long for Shawna to be able to diagnose Clay with Autism and PTSD. Marcus had a hard time swallowing both of those diagnoses. Autism was a death sentence in his mind and PTSD was too hard to grasp. Clay was just 5 years old when his mother died, how could he possibly recall anything from that age he often thought to himself. Marci on the other hand was ecstatic when she heard the news. She told Marcus she knew all along that something was there and swore up and down her plump body that they were going to cure Cray of this. Her words sounded as promising as when she said them about his mother, but we all know how that ended.
It was the first day of art therapy with Aunt Marci’s friend Shawna. This woman was petite, she had snow white skin and eyes as brown as a late October tree. Cray walked into the session and saw he was joined by 4 other children and to this he shuddered. Cray never enjoyed being surrounded by strangers but felt this even more intently when he only had two people left in his life that he actually knew. Cray took a seat furthest away from the child that was stuck in a robotic manner breaking pencils over his head over and over again. “Our medium today is going to be acrylics. For those of you that don’t know what that is, it is a specific type of paint” Shawna announced to the class. She continued on telling the class that today’s topic would be something they are proud of and to make that image come to life on the paper. Cray cocked his head to the side for a brief moment and wondered what he had to be proud of. He thought about his dad, who was not very good at hiding his embarrassment for his son and his Aunt Marci who failed to keep his mother alive like she promised she would. Cray dipped his paintbrush in the water and swirled it around thinking, sending water droplets the shape of tears onto his paper. It was at that moment he knew what he was proud of and got to work.
“We have reached our time limit students, I will now be coming around to see what we have created today” Shawna had announced. Cray sat there watching the pencil breaker now shoving crayons up his nose while Shawna looped around the class, her paint ridden smock flowing with her. “Okay Cray let me see what it is you are proud of” Shawna said as she held up his once white paper. “Cray. I need to speak to your father after class.” Cray just looked up at her with his fleeting green eyes, the same ones the woman on the paper had that were looking straight back at him.

2023.03.29 07:23 Dependent-Pay-8132 Androgen deficiency on BC fixed with DHEA?

Please skip to the TLDR if the first half is too abstract for the non-medical-professional. Thanks!
Hey im a straight male who is very interested in sex hormone endocrinology. I have done a lot of consultations with other men on black market anabolic, androgenic steroid usage (roided up gym douchebags, yes I know).
My question today is if anyone was able to correct androgen (primarily testosterone and DHT) deficiency that is induced by hpoa/hpaa down-regulation from the exogenous ethyl estradiol and progestin used in combined oral birth control? Has anyone ever taken blood labs for total/free testosterone, DHEA, DHT, and SHBG before and after starting “the pill?” If my understanding is correct, all of those measurements should decrease after starting BC (which is in fact steroids by the way) except for the sex hormone binding globulin increasing, all (generally speaking) being very bad news for the patient. If you started BC and developed low sex drive, depressed mood, lack of motivation, and/or decreased physical performance in the gym, then you are likely inducing an androgen deficiency by taking outside steroids (once again BC is just two 17-carbon, 4-ringed steroid molecules just like testosterone). I will repeat this: IF YOU STARTED BC AND DEVELOPED LOW SEX DRIVE, DEPRESSED MOOD, LACK OF MOTIVATION, AND/OR DECREASED PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE IN THE GYM, THEN YOU ARE LIKELY SELF-INDUCING AN ANDROGEN DEFICIENCY.
My solution is to add in DHEA since it is the most upstream androgen and should convert to testosterone and therefore testosterone metabolites as well, even with the hpoa and hpaa suppression mentioned earlier. The reason DHEA would be the solution is because the body can take the right amount and turn it into testosterone/testosterone-metabolites, BUT (VERY BIG BUT HERE) the body wont allow too much to convert to testosterone and wont cause virilizing (manly) side effects because the body will sulfonate the excess and excrete it on a longer timeline since the sulfonated form has maybe 20-30x the half life, if i remember correctly.
TLDR: there are 3 types of sex hormones - progestogens (pregnenolone, progesterone, synthetic progestins in BC…), estrogens (estrone, estriol, regular and ethyl estradiol…), and androgens (DHEA, testosterone, DHT…) - and they are carried by SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin). Combined oral birth control shuts down the body’s production of all three of these but only replaces two of them, all while raising SHBG (which lowers the proportion of “free” hormone out of “total” hormone). Has anyone added DHEA to their combined oral birth control to fix this problem ??? Im not an expert on female sex hormone endocrinology, but this seems to be a lot safer to do at home since you shouldnt be taking too much androgen, and DHEA, by itself, is such a weak androgen that it is only the metabolites we care about in the body outside of the brain. Once again, the body usually knows how to metabolize it into the correct ratios of downstream androgenic hormones since it is a bio-identical hormone, unlike ethyl estradiol and synthetic progestins needed for birth control to prevent pregnancy. I think the safety of this therapy is shown through the fact that Testosterone is a schedule III narcotic in the USA, but DHEA is available over-the-counter for 9 year olds to buy (please dont give a 9 year old access to any of these medications).
My final point is that if you want to try this out relatively safely, i would highly suggest starting out by only using a very low dose of DHEA - maybe 5mg per day or less. For reference, the usual male replacement dose is between 25-50mg per day, but i have technically seen cisgender women on doses higher than that. However, normal female replacement dosages are maybe somewhere closer to 15mg per day. My recommendations for OTC brands are pure encapsulations or life extensions.
Please consult a physician before doing any of this. I highly doubt this is likely, but there is a realm-of-possibility chance that my method will make your combined oral BC less effective. Your doc will likely give the green light for trying this if you are interested (until you tell them that you heard this from a roided-up douche on the internet lol). Legally speaking, this is general medical information, not specific medical advice! Any thoughts from anyone will be much appreciated.

https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/march-27-2023
Seven people died today in a school shooting in Nashville. Three of them were nine-year-olds. Three were staffers. One was the shooter. In the aftermath of the shooting, President Joe Biden once again urged Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons, to which today’s Republican lawmakers will never agree because gun ownership has become a key element of social identity for their supporters, who resent the idea that the legal system could regulate their ownership of firearms.
In the wake of the shooting, Representative Andrew Ogles (R-TN), who represents Nashville thanks to redistricting by the Republican legislature that cut up a Democratic district, said he was “utterly heartbroken” by the shooting and offered “thoughts and prayers to the families of those lost.”
In 2021, Ogles, his wife, and two of his three children held guns as they posed for a Christmas card with a caption that read: “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference—they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.”
Meanwhile, protests continue in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attempt to hamstring his country’s Supreme Court and put the legislature in charge of judicial review has sparked fierce opposition.
Netanyahu regained power last November while he was facing criminal charges of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery. His far-right coalition put together a government and elevated two critics of the Israeli judiciary, who promptly put forward a plan of “legal reforms.”
According to Amichai Cohen and Yuval Shany in Lawfare, supporters of those changes claim that unelected judges who are part of a “liberal deep state” have too much power, often using it to pursue criminal proceedings against senior politicians, prohibit Israeli settlements on Palestinian land in the West Bank, or to refuse religious exemptions from military service for ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students.
On January 4, 2023, Netanyahu’s minister of justice Yariv Levin proposed an overhaul of the judicial system that would put Netanyahu’s slim majority—just 64 seats in the 120-member Knesset—in complete control of the country’s laws, enabling the far-right majority to avoid any checks on its power (as well as enabling Netanyahu to evade the criminal trials he faces).
But Netanyahu did not campaign on remaking the judiciary; it is the far-right members of his coalition who have made it their signature issue. Protests against the measures began almost immediately as alarmed Israelis realized the move would destroy their democracy.
The protests continued until this Saturday, when Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant warned that the massive backlash against the judicial overhaul, including more and more military members who are boycotting their training missions, threatened the nation’s military readiness. He called for a halt to the attempt to force through the changes. Two members of the coalition backed Gallant and one appeared to be wavering, thus threatening Netanyahu’s majority. The next day, Netanyahu fired Gallant.
The firing sparked massive demonstrations and widespread strikes. At first, the far-right members of Netanyahu’s coalition refused to stop their plans to overhaul the judiciary and called for their supporters to turn out to oppose the protesters, but Netanyahu apparently cut a deal with them. He has announced that the judicial reforms will be postponed while the two sides look for a compromise, and that he has agreed to the formation of a civil “national guard” the right will control. While Bethan McKernan of The Guardian called this move an empty gesture, Zach Beauchamp of Vox noted that the new paramilitary unit will be under the control of the extremist minister of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who in 2008 was convicted of supporting a terrorist organization and who used to keep a photograph of a mass murderer in his living room.
Still, as Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo notes, the halt is “pretty transparently a stalling tactic,” launched in the hope that the protests will die down and the package can go forward later, although, as Marshall points out, polls show that the so-called reforms are very unpopular.
The crisis in Israel threatens the country’s relationship with the United States. During the Trump administration, Netanyahu cozied up to Trump and his Republican allies, and Israel’s continued rightward shift has alarmed foreign observers. In early March, Israel’s finance minister Bezalel Smotrich called for the state to “erase” a Palestinian town, and he has called himself a “proud homophobe” and a “fascist.” In Israel, Netanyahu’s son tweeted that the U.S. State Department is behind the protests, hoping to overthrow Netanyahu, a sentiment to which Netanyahu himself has nodded.
When Smotrich visited Washington, D.C., earlier this month, White House officials declined to meet with him, and more than ninety Democratic lawmakers wrote to Biden asking him to use “all diplomatic tools available to prevent Israel’s current government from further damaging the nation’s democratic institutions and undermining the potential for two states for two peoples.” According to Josh Lederman of NBC News, more than 300 rabbis last year said that members of Netanyahu’s coalition were not welcome to speak at their synagogues.
The threats to the Israeli judiciary threaten the nation’s economy, as billionaire and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg pointed out in a New York Times op-ed earlier this month. “Companies and investors place enormous value on strong and independent judicial systems because courts help protect them — not only against crime and corruption but also government overreach. Just as important, they protect what their employees value most: individual rights and freedoms,” he wrote.
In case anyone missed the obvious comparison between what is happening in Israel and what might transpire in the U.S., Bloomberg continued: “In the United States, our founding fathers’ insistence on checks and balances to control the tyrannical tendencies of majorities was part of their genius. Our Constitution is not perfect—no law is—but its many checks and balances have been essential to protecting and advancing fundamental rights and maintaining national stability. It was only through those safeguards that the United States has managed to withstand extreme shocks to our democracy in recent years—including a disgraceful attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power—without a catastrophic fracturing.”

2023.03.29 07:14 Fuck-you-2020 To whoever needs to hear this: A warning about incoming fascism in the United States

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it needs to be said regardless.
I have been studying the news and social media trends a lot lately. Recently, backlash against trans people has grown extremely. Today, I was scared shitless. I saw talk of putting LGBTQ+ people into concentration camps. Those discussing it were acting as if it would save lives.
Now, you can put lions and zebras in zoos for all I care. You can be all for putting a horse down or caging it or shipping it overseas, it’s whatever. But you cannot ever, ever be in favor of forcefully relocating a group of people by force. There is nothing more Nazi than advocating for the first step of genocide: isolating an undesired population. If you ever hear people saying that camps should be used to contain LGBTQ+ people, or any group of people, shut them the fuck down.
These are dark times. We are just a few short years of a rapidly approaching fascist regime, and if we do nothing and let lawmakers make the changes they want to, millions of innocent people are going to die.
I shouldn’t have to know as much as I do about the current state of the world. I shouldn’t have to fear for my life at 17. I shouldn’t have to worry about my own safety more than an adult does. I hate that anyone can know hate the way I do.
My name is Max. I am 17. I am Non-binary. I’ve not slept in 3 days. I just want to be left alone and allowed to write symphonies. Please stop making my life miserable.

2023.03.29 07:09 ifuckedyourdaddytoo OCA passive-aggressive about Ukraine

The latest ecclesial dross from the Orthodox Church which is in America but never quite of it:
https://www.oca.org/news/headline-news/his-beatitude-metropolitan-tikhon-issues-statement-on-kiev-caves-lavra
We continue to pray for the people of Ukraine and condemn all violent aggression, including the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine’s sovereign territory.
... the other "violent aggression" we are expected to infer to be that committed by people merely defending their homeland. I have the impression they're petulantly thinking "do we really have to say Russia is the invader," especially in light of their ambiguous first statement on Ukraine, after which they were shamed into issuing a more forceful second.
Still, it's noteworthy that today they are forced to be more abstract about sympathizing with the aggressor. In response to Charlottesville in 2017, they were more forthcoming about how they felt:
https://www.oca.org/holy-synod/statements/holy-synod/holy-synod-of-bishops-issues-statement-on-recent-tragic-events-in-charlotte
At the same time, we also reject the climate of condemnation of the individuals carrying out these heinous activities.
But white supremacists should be condemned.

2023.03.29 07:09 Sylphael ACA/Medicaid gap options

I live in Alabama, and as of today I am covered by Medicaid. In a few days I will no longer be, although my 1 year old son should retain his eligibility. My husband has never been covered under Medicaid. I have several health problems and it's a big priority for us to make sure I stay insured. Neither of us are offered insurance through a workplace, and our combined income is under poverty level.
I read something online about estimating your income higher than actual if you fall into the coverage gap in order to be able to access subsidize coverage. I would love to have health insurance, especially for my husband as well who has been going without it, but I worry about causing issues with being able to retain coverage for my son, which is most important to me. Are there any minutiae of this that I need to be aware of that I'm missing? It seems too simple to just... estimate at the bare minimum for coverage?

https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/march-24-2023
A follow-up to last night’s examination of the confusion among the Republicans about their budget plans: today when a reporter said to House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that the chair of the House Budget Committee, Jodey Arrington (R-TX), had said that he and McCarthy were finalizing a list of proposals to give to President Biden about spending cuts, McCarthy answered: “I don’t know what he’s talking about.”
Noise also continues from former president Donald Trump, who early this morning posted on social media that his indictment could lead to “potential death & destruction”; hours later, Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg received a death threat in an envelope with white powder in it. For three days this week, Russian accounts have emailed bomb threats to the court buildings where the grand jury is meeting.
Tomorrow, Trump will hold a rally in Waco, Texas, where a 1993 government siege to extricate the leader of a religious cult who witnesses said was stockpiling weapons led to a gun battle and a fire that left seventy-six people dead.
Although a Republican investigation cited “overwhelming evidence” that exonerated the government of wrongdoing, right-wing talk radio hosts jumped on the events at Waco to attack the administration of Democratic president Bill Clinton. Rush Limbaugh stoked his listeners’ anger with talk of the government’s “murder” of citizens, and Alex Jones dropped out of community college to start a talk show on which he warned that the government had “murdered” the people at Waco and was about to impose martial law.
After the Waco siege the modern militia movement took off, and Trump is clearly using the anniversary to tap into domestic violence against the government to defend him in advance of possible indictments.
But will it work? His supporters turned out on January 6, 2021, when he was president and had the power—they thought—to command the army to back him. In the end, that didn’t happen. Since then, Trump’s foot soldiers have been going to prison while he dines at Mar-a-Lago and rails about how unfairly he has been treated.
Trump is also in more trouble today, as Judge Beryl Howell ruled last week that Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, former director of national intelligence John Ratcliffe, former top Department of Homeland Security official Ken Cuccinelli, former national security advisor Robert O'Brien, former top aide Stephen Miller, former deputy chief of staff and social media director Dan Scavino, and former Trump aides Nick Luna and John McEntee all have to testify before the federal grand jury investigating Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Special counsel Jack Smith had subpoenaed these members of the Trump administration, and Trump had tried to stop their testimony by claiming it was covered by executive privilege. Howell rejected that claim. In the past, she rejected a similar claim by arguing that only the current president has the right to claim executive privilege and Biden had declined to do so. Meadows is the key witness to Trump’s involvement in the events of January 6.
Also today, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a repeal of so-called right-to-work legislation passed in 2012 by a Republican-controlled legislature, whose members pushed it through in a lame-duck session without hearings.
That legislation had a long history. U.S. employers had opposed workers’ unions since the organization of the National Labor Union in 1866, but the rise of international communism in the early twentieth century provoked a new level of violence against organized workers. In 1935, as part of the New Deal, Democrats passed the National Labor Relations Act, popularly known as the Wagner Act, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed it into law.
The Wagner Act confirmed workers’ right to organize and to bargain with employers collectively (although to appease southern Democrats, it exempted domestic and agricultural workers, who in the South were mostly Black). It also defined unfair labor practices and established a new National Labor Relations Board that could issue cease and desist orders if workers testified that employers were engaging in them.
The Wagner Act gave workers a unified voice in American politics and leveled the playing field between them and employers. But while most Americans of both parties liked the Wagner Act, right-wing Republicans hated it because it put large sums of money into the hands of labor officials, who used the money to influence politics. And organized workers had backed Democrats since the 1860s.
So, in 1947, a Republican-led Congress pushed back against the Wagner Act. The previous year, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) had launched “Operation Dixie” to organize Black workers, which seemed a threat to segregation as well as white employers. Together, business Republicans and segregationist Democrats passed the Labor Management Relations Act of 1947, better known as the Taft-Hartley Act. Ohio Senator Robert Taft (who was the son of President William Howard Taft) claimed that the Taft-Hartley Act would simply equalize power between workers and employers after the “completely one-sided” Wagner Act gave all the power to labor leaders.
The Taft-Hartley Act limited the ways in which workers could organize; it also went after unions’ money. Although the Wagner Act had established that if a majority of a company’s workers voted to join a union, that union would represent all the workers in the company, it didn’t require all the workers to join that union. That presented a problem: if workers were going to get the benefits of union representation without joining, why should they bother to pay dues?
So labor leaders began to require that everyone employed in a unionized company must pay into the union to cover the cost of bargaining, whether or not they joined the union.
The Taft-Hartley Act undermined this workaround by permitting states to get rid of the requirement that employees who didn’t join a union that represented them must pay fees to the union.
Immediately, states began to pass so-called right-to-work laws. Their supporters argued that every man should have the right to bargain for his work on whatever terms he wanted, without oversight by a union. But lawmakers like Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), who pushed a right-to-work law in his own state, were clear that they were intent on breaking the power of organized workers. He was determined to destroy the political power of unions because, he said, their leaders were stealing American freedom. They were, he said, “more dangerous than Soviet Russia.”
Michigan had been known as a pro-union state, but in 2012, Republicans there pushed through two right-to-work laws over waves of protest. Repealing the laws has been a priority for Democrats, and now that they are in control of state government, they have made it happen.
Joey Cappelletti of the Associated Press notes that twenty-six states currently have right to work laws, and although Missouri voters overwhelmingly rejected a right-to-work law in 2017, it has been 58 years since a state repealed one. Indiana voters repealed theirs in 1965; Republicans put it back into place in 2012.
Republicans say that since the neighboring states of Indiana and Wisconsin have right-to-work laws—although there were huge protests when those laws went into place in 2012 and 2015—Michigan’s repeal of right to work will make that state less attractive to employers.
But after signing the law today, Governor Whitmer embraced a different vision for the state, saying: "Today, we are coming together to restore workers' rights, protect Michiganders on the job, and grow Michigan's middle class."

2023.03.29 07:03 Economy_Arugula4527 Anyone else work with LBGTQIA?

I’m apart of the LBGTQIA and work with those in my community. I love my job. Don’t want to work anywhere else. However the Nashville shooting has really shook me up.
Yesterday my dad tried to call me and was very out of breath on the phone. I had not paid attention to the shooting all day as I was at work. From news reports the shooter was transgender. My dad is worried that some right wing nut case is going to come to our agency and harm myself/others.
We got an email today on how to talk as staff, talk to clients that this is a gun problem combined with mental health issues.
We have lock down procedures and when guns are brought in the facility it’s run fight hide protocol. My office is open cubicle so no places to hide. My agency lease let the security go a few months ago. I did not tell my dad this as it would have only increased the worry.
I tried to tell him I could be shot at a grocery store but that didn’t work. He kept coming back to you are my only child and I don’t want to lose you. How do I maintain my love of advocacy and also maintain safety?
I have no children or spouse and single so I have never really considered how important my safety is to my parents. I’m usually the first line of defense at work because I’m good at diffusing difficult clients.
I have seriously considered moving out of the US so I don’t have that worry.
